Awaunek is still my big weakness, but at least this time I only used one continue. Managed to improve my time on certain levels too.

That's with a continue BTW. Need more practice...

3 deaths again (2 of which I see as incredibly stupid), take those away and I'm probably in the 35 range.  Some rough spots besides as well.  I'm wondering how low this can go.

Edit

0:36:12 - Breakdown - ALL

2 deaths this time (6-1 miniboss and the last boss due to a horrid start to the fight).  Otherwise, few mistakes here, few mistakes there and some bad luck in spots.  Not done yet, not by a long shot.

I think the update makes the double post okay.

0:35:02 - Breakdown - ALL

Still 2 deaths, but as far as deaths in this game go they cost about as little time as possible.  There's still a couple minutes that can realistically come off of this by my estimation.  Gonna keep plugging away at it.
0:47:58 - Tharandir - ALL

No continues this time... I think I died five times.
@_@
0:38:22 - batman9502 - ALL - NEW

Stupidly died once in a non-boss part, died against the final boss and made a couple large mistakes in other non-boss parts. This can definitely come down, but I'm just getting a decent time up there right now.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
47:30 - gia - ALL, fucking mad because this time died five times versus the penultimate boss for no reason whatsoever just kept hitting me Sad

I don't know how you're getting it that low Breakdown. I had no deaths and only a few small mistakes and you still beat me by almost a minute. Sad

Probably because I haven't done much (read: any) route researching. I just kind of take the stages as they go and try to keep moving right as much as possible.

And there seems to be a noticeable lack of participation this week, unless everyone's just holding out their times until Sunday.

I personally am still waiting for groobo to stop by and drop off a sub-30 time. Tongue
Never give up!

I'm done, end of discussion.  I can't stand this game any longer.  Yes, I may have once said I enjoyed it - I need to rephrase and say I only enjoyed watching it being played.  My runs of games in said genre notwithstanding, I am terrible at 2D platformers, as I have said before.

But considering what's on tap for SNES week I'm going to work on playing those now.  I know I'm probably never going to be able to compete as long as Breakdown is involved in these tourneys, but at least by getting a head start I have something resembling a remote chance.

(Speaking of which, Breakdown, what systems did you have again?  If you don't have an actual Sega Genesis but do have a PS2, I might be able to loan you my copy of the Sega Genesis Collection so you can do a run of Ristar for the site, if you want.)

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
You can check the tas. The levels are easy, about bosses:

snake: hit twice on first "square", follow it and do last hit before it leaves.

boss 3: on the falling sequences stay away and use diagonal grabs?, can grab when climbing back up too if you miss him

music robots: during the intro you can destroy one head, just mash the attack, for the other two heads you can stay below and mash up attack to hit twice in a round, you can destroy all three before the pause
boss 4: touch the stand's pole then turn away from it, that way you can hit upwards without leaving that area -> safe from attacks

boss 5: use good timing, if he uses ice breath grab a new food then release your directions (never move towards the cat or you'll fly towards its mouth) when you are close to it throw your food. If you are frozen too close to it try to grab its belly asap (don't hold direction remember).

alien squad: stay in the middle of the screen, facing left, then just attack upwards. Move a bit to the left before attacking when the squad uses the "fall as a circle in 3D" attack, and I have to wait when they use "attack one by one", maybe the tas shows how to handle that one quickly.
boss 6: just mash attack and jump so that the crane falls on the enemy

boss 7: mash attack but with some sort timing :S

final boss 1: move to a side at the same time the spheres attack and then attack them.
final boss 2: dont jump until he stops moving, then attack him, dont attack if he summoned the spheres, if he did, destroy some to get reserve hp (stand below and to the right to destroy the fitrs, move a bit to the left for the second then evade.
final boss 3: attack up while jumping to the side if hes on a corner then stop moving and mash diagonal right to get him when he uses the beam attack, you can attack if he goes for the black hole too

If you do it right, you should get all three hits in the first square.

Here is a video of a boss rush to give you some ideas for the end-level bosses. The guy has a crazy strategy for the first boss that I've never been able to replicate, but everything else is exactly what you need to do.

As far as the levels go, all I can really say is memorization helps a bunch. The TAS won't help you much with those, it abuses the shooting-star power of the lever to no end, making most of the routes it takes freakishly improbable to actually pull off.
I want off the ride....
well with those tips; i dropped my time a bit down..

45:48 thats better? I managed to pull the first hit on riho like he does in that boss thing. I found i did better. Like I forgot you could grapple on the moles claws, so that took me forever. and yeah. The stages are still giving me trouble (Looking at you damn song birds);

Sweet.  This time should put me in dead last.  This was basically my third play-through.  I died a few times, but I didn't have to use a continue like I did in my second play-through.

Still a couple rough patches (most notably a bad 3rd boss fight, lost 15-20 seconds), but pulled off a lot of good stuff as well (1 round 4-1 boss kill is probably the highlight).  This is probably it for me for the week as I likely won't have the time this weekend to keep at it.  I know this can still come down by at least a minute or two and I think I might pursue this further via the Sega Genesis Collection and try to get something actually on the site (I already have a copy, but appreciate the offer Frosty :)).

And for those curious, yes I do have a replay.  If a better vid doesn't surface by the end of the week I'll post it.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Nice Breakdown, that time is better than Serious Cacodemon's (guy who was going to submit a Ristar run). Also I agree with what you said about the TAS. The notes are more useful than the run itself.

One death on 4-2 trying to do the drum and spikes part too fast. This week was my finals week so I was really busy, so for SNES week I promise to post my first time faster (which is pretty much a guarantee since it can't be any slower than at the deadline).

As for some general comments on it, obvious mistakes are obvious.  Some not so obvious mistakes include:

1-1:  Nailing the perfect swing on the pole kept me from reseting after the early little mistakes (even though I proceded to botch the entrance to the boss area and drew the un-oneroundable pattern).

1-2:  With the pole I'm hoping to get over the tree and skip the whole "Hey, I just knocked over a tree" animation.  Something I want to test is that since I'm using the pole, the bottom route at the beginning might be faster (edit:  tested it, and yeah, it's faster).

1-3:  Check the vid batman9502 posted earlier for what I was going for here.

2-2:  Screwed up the first rising water part pretty bad, but a higher water level makes the second room easier, so it's not as bad as it could be.

3-1:  It's possible not to get hit by the rising lava, but the jump has to fall in a pretty tiny window.  Screwed up the pole a little bit too, ideally I land on top of the pole instead of right under it.

3-2:  Got half of what I was going for with the pole here, but it's possible to get to the next ledge and skip the first blob with a detonator part.  I actually recently discovered it's a lot easier to pull off if you're swinging the other way on the pole, which is pretty easy to rig up without losing much time at all by swinging from the top of the pole right before it.

3-3:  Let's never speak of this again.

4-1:  Overall pretty happy with this level.  Did screw up a bit with the second metronome as it's possible to throw it directly to the ledge past the first fan.  And like I mentioned earlier, one round kill on the boss is the pimp shit.

4-2:  Top path at the end is faster if you get up there cleanly.  I obviously did not get up there cleanly.

5-1:  Pause at the start is ugly.  Not sure why I bothered doing the full spin on the pole, as a quick one works just as well and take like 5 seconds or so less to do.  Bad snowball fight to boot.

5-2:  Outside of 3-3 this probably the level I'm least happy with.  Grabbed too many stars, swam poorly in general, and truly bungled the last swimming section.

5-3:  Missed the jump over the projectile with the last curry.  The timing for clearing it and being in position to make the throw to his mouth immediately afterwards is pretty tough.

6-1:  Bad run of the vertical shaft after the "swimming" part, and I can't believe I missed the early grab on the boss's "camp out at the top and throw my minions at you" phase.  Even watching the replay, it looks like I got him.  Ah well.

Couple tiny mistakes on the rest, but it went at least mostly according to plan.
