Wow that was terrible!  Shocked I know you have got to be severely under leveled to be getting owned like that.  It seems that the axe is too slow for it to be effective?  Can you get any more people on your squad to make the fight more manageable?  You are going to need some kind of miracle against Cross at this rate.
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
It's not so much the level, its that with five guys on two of us there's barely anything I can do.

And yes, Cross 2 does have pretty much the same problem, although it's possible I'll be able to recruit Gil by that point.  In all my practice work I ground up a lot in the Algandars' Castle part so that I'd be strong enough to get him, and I hadn't tried this before.  I figured it'd be possible, but...
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
Ok I was wrong and I think it is the level.  I just don't have any way to reasonably do enough damage to kill them.  soooooooooooooooooo I probably need to go back and redo Algandars.

新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
Molotov asked me if there was anything he could do to help.  I kind of suggested he could help me figure out where to grind (even though I thought it would be useless) but as it turns out he reminded me of something I wouldn't have ever thought of: dueling people.  It'll take some practice, but making a segment out of dueling people in the fort and town areas sounds pretty good to me, for two reasons mainly:

1) get exactly the encounters I want.  Duels are always the same, so I can work out who I need to fight exactly and practice those fights specifically, not worrying about random things like party members being fucking morons or extra enemies.

2) Can make it its own segment without a big time penalty, so I don't have to redo Algandars. >_>

Anyway I actually think I'm going to hash out time to finish this up; previous memory card panic was merely a result of my jPS2 not getting along with one of them, so the files are all safe, and the tapes should all be intact if I can find them.  If I just hash out a few hours a week I'm pretty sure I could finish by the end of the summer.  I know I've said that so many times, so I'm not going to pretend it suddenly means more, but...
Well, like I mentioned to you before, duel Zane if at all possible. He's by far the best choice for experience, but you probably wouldn't survive Shining Rain anyway. On the bright side, Zane seems pretty freaking stupid and is easy to trick into doing a worthless counterattack. Maybe if you got super lucky (or had awesome timing?), you could just keep making him counter instead of using his volty blast. Farfetched, I know. The payoff would be so worth it that you have to try though.

I guess the more likely thing is that you'll pick on Gil, Clarence, and Serva before going to sleep and repeating the process? Seems reasonable to me, though the whole sleep thing takes centuries. At least all of them are in the same area during the day (Clarence is a biotch to catch while walking).

If you have anything else for me to do, let me know. Smiley

trying to figure out how many random ?_? emoticons i can make i guess k_k

i just spent a few hours playing this and y_y i really am stuck

dueling takes forever j_j finding random humans to fight takes forever q_q you can poison those guys in that fight but i don't have anyone strong enough to take hits long enough to get more than 1 or 2 successes H_H and even if you do it takes forever, they only take 8 damage a tick which means you probably need like 50 ~_~ and they can call reinforcements and it's not like i can run in and hit them to stop it r_r and going through all those fucking cutscenes every time takes forever too c_c not that taking forever hasn't been a common theme in this run A_A but i just don't know n_n

do i go back a segment and try again T_T it's better than running this up in its own segment since i'm already out there i guess G_G but i just don't know if i can even tolerate this game anymore o_o  i needed to finish while i still liked it apparently O_O  i don't regret taking this up in the first place or anything, i'm just sorry i couldn't bring closure one way or another earlier n_n  i really thought this whole time i could make myself do it 7_7 but i'm not sure anymore z_z

also you're so totally wrong kevin, the battles in this game are horrible lol_lol

and yes i meant for this to be painful to read, it sure wasn't so fun to write 4_4
I was talking to Nitrodon about this stuff a little while ago, and I think there might be an idea or two for you to try. Relevant stuff:

Quote:
<Molotov> How many duels to 29?
<Nitrodon> 59800-2598=57202
<Nitrodon> 101500-57202=44298
<Nitrodon> Zane = 12805, so duel him 4 times

...

<Molotov> Unless Zane is Superman or something and just doesn't fall over to normal attacks?
<Molotov> Yeah, one-handed sword > others for that purpose.
<Molotov> Attack #5.

...

<Molotov> (Eagle Crest, in this case.)
<Nitrodon> he has 11706 dagols (after selling the steel sword)
<Molotov> 75 kills for that attack. :/
<Molotov> So +6 per duel day.
<Nitrodon> does Jack need to get the kills?
<Molotov> Though I suppose he could stomp even the weaklings in the place before sleeping. Tongue

...

<Molotov> Ha, stupid idea +1.
<Molotov> Book of Earth. Tongue
<Nitrodon> ?
<Nitrodon> which game is that is?
<Nitrodon> in*
<Molotov> Teaches Jack the command "Earthquake."
<Nitrodon> ah
<Molotov> Which, as you might expect, knocks dudes down...for 4 volty points.
<Molotov> Ignores parries too. Smiley
<Nitrodon> for Zane, or for that fight that pwned him in the failed segment?
<Molotov> But I don't know if Zane in duel form counts as a boss.
<Molotov> I didn't think of the latter, but that actually sounds really good.

...

* Nitrodon checks to see if Marco sells it
<Molotov> But the recovery time for commands might screw that up, right?
<Molotov> He does.
<Molotov> Seriously though, I have to wonder why something like that wouldn't be useful all run long.
<Nitrodon> does it deal any damage?
<Molotov> Doesn't seem to, from the description.
<Nitrodon> were there any previous battles in which that could have been useful?
<Molotov> Well, first I should ask: Can you inflict damage on a downed enemy?
<Molotov> I was assuming yes until just now, so I figure I should make sure.
<Nitrodon> Sky Splitter (2 CP, 90 Arc, 1.1 Power, 0.5 Knockback)
<Nitrodon>      -15 Kills Required
<Nitrodon>      -Jack leaps up into the air and then sinks downwards into his opponent,
<Nitrodon>      damaging him even should he be on the ground.
<Molotov> Smiley
<Nitrodon> probably other attacks (for other weapons) too
<Molotov> For a measly 4 volty points and 800 dagols though, I don't see why one wouldn't buy the thing. Even if it turned out to be useless.

This stuff is worth a shot at least. Though if you need kills for the knockdown attack, maybe it would be better to find a group of weaklings and just solo them. Dwarf land tunnels?
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
<Nitrodon> does Jack need to get the kills?
Yes, it only counts your personal kills.  Reason #800 running this game sucks.

<Molotov> But the recovery time for commands might screw that up, right?
Actually, commands get cast almost instantly and you can move out of danger after maybe a second.  You just have to not get hit for the next few seconds or they won't go off.

<Molotov> Well, first I should ask: Can you inflict damage on a downed enemy?
Normally, no (not counting the fact that enemies who are falling can take hits, for a window that's usually too small for the person who knocked them over to hit them again), but I didn't really know about that move, I guess I can try it on my clear game to see how it works =/
Quote from spineshark:

Hence the solo part I mentioned. Tongue

No, that's not what I meant. I meant the recovery time between commands (or recharge time, if you prefer). I don't remember how long it is, but it's probably long enough that you'd need to knock Zane down once or twice in between uses.

You mean Earthquake or the knockdown attack? (Because you'll likely need both, if this idea works.)

[Edit]: Or Sky Splitter? So many things that could have meant. Smiley
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
well fuck.

it works.

in fact, for the most part, it works really well.

it does damage.  and every enemy knocked down counts as you hitting them.  in other words, you get volty back.  in the battles where you start outnumbered, this means you can just spam it until things are down to a manageable number as long as you run away and throw heals on at least one other party member.  that fire mountain battle?  total joke.  cross 1?  also very easy.  it doesn't always knock him down, but it works well enough.  by the time the other guys are dead you don't have to hit him much.

cross 2?  uhhhhh...not as much.  you can take out all his guys safely, but it leaves him with a ton of health still and ganz and romaria can't take him face to face.  i'll need to practice a bit, unless he can be poisoned, in which case everything's pretty gravy after somebody eats his first volty (wailing on him with all the earthquakes lets him activate the first one and eventually you can't knock him over fast enough to block it)

i got to the second to last save in 4:33 and that was after forgetting where the last guy was that you need to talk to after the fort attack (the dwarf in marsha's room haha).  can definitely save 3-5 minutes when i take these four segments to recording in menu work (and there's a hell of a lot of it now, all the fights left except the final boss are basically hitting the same attack and healing over and over like some final fantasy game or something) and general movement (but i got really lucky on the way to fire mountain, dodged everyone iirc).  but the rest isn't so daunting anymore so maybe this will be finished after all.  potentially even this year, unbelievably enough.
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
Cross can be poisoned.  It's slow (he only takes 13-15 per tick) but it's not like anyone in my party is capable of fighting him anyway and it feels worse than it is (if not by much).

So I can definitely complete the game from my current position, without having to fight any regular encounters.  I'm withholding my estimate fro the final time though.  It'll be a surprise !_!

The real surprise is me finishing this though I guess.  Who saw that coming?
not me lol

Good answer!
Wow, this'll be great!  You rock, spineshark!

I remember destroying a radiator on the way to my graveyard shift job by hitting a deer in 1995 or '96, and I still had to go to work that night!  That's my Radiator Story.  I honestly didn't remember this game being about auto parts.

Ok, no actual progress update (I have a few important things coming up this week, and then I'll plan to knock out the rest of this run before flying out to Mike's), but I want to make the very happy announcement that I've gone through all my tapes and, so far as I can remember/see, every blessed segment is accounted for.

Except for one.  That would be Algandars' castle, which it seems I taped over with a run of ESPGaluda.  Oops.  (It was a pretty damn good one though!)  That's okay; it's annoying but I can totally do it again, and watching the first six-ish segments reminded me of all the horrible stuff I've already overcome.  It's inspiring.

However, if someone still has the crappy capture I made of that segment and uploaded on filefront and could upload it somewhere I could watch it again, I'd really appreciate it.
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
Okay, I have some Algandars tech worked out so I don't need to get as lucky as I thought.  That's not to say there's not a lot of fucking luck, because there is.  But I'm dodging everything but the guy on the stairs, the first guy in the tunnel, and the cat (if it appears) pretty consistently.

The cat's impossible though.  The good news is that it appears alone and so it isn't even really worth using a Flee Ball on-I think killing it instead if it comes to that will basically break even since the extra volty will be useful.

Three times I made it in perfectly tonight, and this was in less than an hour of attempts before I got too frustrated to keep trying at the moment.  Once I couldn't keep up the dodges on the way out (guess I should practice this more but it's like 100x more work), the other two I got ridiculously screwed over by the boss.  If I finish both objectives for this segment (algandars, buy earthquake) and still have a Flee Ball left, that would be ideal.  I'd like to have one for Fire Mountain if possible (and if I can save it past that, it'd be nice in City of White Nights too).  If not, there'll be a spontaneous decision about whether or not I'm buying 11 more =/
YEA RADIATOR STORIES WOOHOO
. . .
bump?
So is that bounty on radiata stories still around? I'm totally down for a all characters run for 300 dollars
Waiting hurts my soul...
Enhasa had the money and hasn't been around for a year or so now. Maybe Mike can still contact him or someone else. This would be a crazy run to attempt as a first run. I'm fairly sure you'd get burned out quickly.
If you are crazy enough to actually do that, the following information on Vancoor missions may be helpful.  It's not quite complete yet, because I'm kind of lazy.

Smilodon Fang <C>

actually believe it or not the challenges I run for myself are more annoying.  Perfect stat-maxing Xenosaga is way more burn out than this.
I just wanted to make sure that the bounty was still up before I bothered planning, and find out if I'm supposed to beat Aphelion twice or just quit when I get the last character.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Not really sure what goes into perfect stat-maxing, but unless it means failing at something over and over again it's not the same.

My guess would be beating Aphelion twice, but someone more familiar with the game could give better feedback on that.

In any case, I'd suggest posting videos of your progress so that people can comment on the strategies you're using and what areas you can speed up. Remember it's not just collect all the characters, it's doing it as quickly as possible.

Alright, so this has taken way longer than it at all needed to.

I finish the semester on Wednesday. Some time after that I'm going to go home, mark all my segments on my tapes, get a new memory card and mail everything to Molotov. This will be done by early June. Once he hammers out the last three segments (Cross attacks the fort, the final dungeon, the final boss) this damn thing will be done. This is me, officially putting this behind me.

Although in all honesty the thing that's made it so hard to keep going is the slow shift from "holy shit this is so random and annoying" to "is this even going to get accepted anymore?" I watched everything I'd done a year or so ago and some of it was really good and showed how hard I worked and some of it was godawful sloppy and showed how lazy I was. Honestly I think even most of the worst stuff was "acceptable" when I recorded it, but as the site's gotten better and my attitude has shifted it's...ugh. Really though, I just want to move onto something else. Preferably a game where running doesn't imply focusing on the most tedious and frustrating parts exclusively and not paying any attention to the good stuff.

ANYWAY

I (and Enhasa) have always taken it to mean two full clears, though obviously I don't have the final word site-wise or bounty-wise.

As for the other part, it's a nightmare. Hahaha. I'm pretty sure it's better to do Human path first since it's stronger in postgame (you have to beat Radian so you can recruit Valkyrie) and it's nice to have the extra money when you SfS but beyond that I never really figured anything out. Even figuring out the best way to recruit characters with no special requirements is a hell of a task.

This is also how I felt near the end of Vandal Hearts. Especially watching early segments and noticing how terrible they are when compared with later ones.
