Hey look, the first released divinity game (2002)!

I started playing this game again since Kickstarter for Divinity: Original Sin came up.

So classes in this game only has base stat modifiers (STR per Damage Point, CON per Health/Stamia Point, INT per MAGIC point), basic special skill, and starting skills different from one another. Warrior types are able to spin and deal damage to everything around them, Survivors can crouch to hide better? Looks awkward but this is somewhat useful for a glitch.. Mages can swap places with an enemy.

One of the main mechanics of the game is to use Ancient Pyramid which allows you to teleport from one pyramid to another as long as it is either on the floor or one is in your inventory. Though you'd think you can sequence break a lot of stuff by teleporting pass triggers but on occasion you'll softlock the game.. Another nice thing is if an NPC is annoying you, you can kill them straight up even if it's a main storyline NPC then softlock yourself.

There's a few glitches you can do in the game to speed it up for a run.

Such as duplicating items by 2 ways. Save, then grab an item -> Load, when the game has loaded you'll still have the item on your cursor. Another way is for any item with a quantity, drop it with an negative value and you'll underflow the item on the floor along with doubling the amount in your inventory. I believe it uses a unsigned short to hold item quantity values so 0-65535
Another is running faster by using a frog statue which polymorphs yourself to a frog. I think frog is the fastest polymorph, so if you use the Statue -> Crouch -> Use Statue again -> Stand you should be running a crapton faster. Though this only works on Survivors since they have crouch. I haven't done enough messing around for the other two archtypes or any other statues. Alternatively you can chase merchants out of their shops by polymorphing to a spider with the Spider Statue and running at them.

You can go OOBs with the teleporters in some areas but you cannot move afterwards, only to continue throwing the pyramids to get around. So if you want to teleport across a map that you haven't explored yet, you would want to use Wizard's Sight, open your inventory, pan the map somewhere then click on your inventory (if you click anywhere that's not part of the UI then the camera goes back to your character). While the area is shown, pick up a Pyramid and use the skill 'Use Pyramid' or a skill that you can't use directly such as 'Deadly Gift' to bring up a dialog box. Then pick a spot to drop the pyramid before the dialog closes and as long as there is Line of Sight to the dropped point to your character, then it should be tossed over. Similarly when you become the divine one, you get a Summon Eye skill to explore places, with this eye you can at least get an idea of how far you are by opening the Area map, then drop it wherever you want before the eye dies.

There's other glitches that used to be in the game until they were patched out, such as being able to socket limitless amounts of Charms into your gear, but since you don't really need anything but health to get fat for a run this isn't much of an issue. One thing they did do in the latest patch is allow any trap kills (Scorpions mainly) to give experience to the player so you can essentially gain levels to get fat. Though any NPC in the game doesn't update if you're not close enough to them.
Thread title:
Hi there!

just 2 months ago NecroxTheGamer has uploaded a speedrun for Divine Divinity, which he completes in about 86mins.
(Playlist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=juiy2FDIIXc&list=PLVjHgdcgNx_TQb4v7BMy3uYOb1B7ZIPQE&hd=1)

Since that I've been trying to do a speedrun myself and found that the game can be completed a lot faster, as not all the glitches mentioned above are used (the statue glitche saves a lot of time). So far my best time is at 65mins, although 55mins should be possible. In case anybody is interested in my routes, I have them documented with maps and descriptions (in german!). They're probably not perfet, but the best I could come up with.

I have also discovered a few things that can save even more time. While reading the rules, I haven't found anything forbidding the use of them, but I'm still not sure.

Skip a cutscene:
By Alt-Tabbing out of the game,  any film sequence gets canceled, which saves about 1min (there is only one).

Moving items between savegames:
This of course requires prepared savegames to get the items from.
Using the first duplication methode described by ogam, you can move items between 2 savegames. When you load the prepared savegame, grab an item and load your run-savegame, you will still have the item on your cursor. Using this glitch would save quite a bit of time, as you could get some quest relevant things.
Nice the cutscene skip is awesome, especially since that one ruins your ears since it's not affected by sound settings.
I wish you can stream this normally without using a D3D windower otherwise you'll get a lot of artifacting.

Last run I did was a while back http://www.twitch.tv/mrogam/c/3573148
1:15:xx or something. There's still a lot of routing to do left to do.

I wanted to find an optimal throwing positions for pyramids to do cross map pyramid throws but didn't get to it.
I have playing around a bit with the pyramids, but to me throwing them far doesn't seem to be too useful. Whenever I throw them too far, I can't use them anymore. For the distance I can throw them, walking is faster.
Maybe I am doing something wrong or it only works for unexplored areas in combination with Wizard's Sight, which I haven't tested yet.

As you have been playing the game since the Divinity: Original Sin kickstarter, I assume that you play the Steam-Version, which might be a little different.

For recording OBS works fine and afaik it can also be used for streaming, but I don't know anything about that.
I played the GOG version which had problems when using OBS, haven't tried since some updates on OBS. So I had to use D3D windower to even capture it without huge artifcating on the stream. Client side it was fine.

Yeah I used Wizard's sight to do long throws, mainly it was for fun. Only area which it might save some time is doing long throws from one of the bosses at the end of the game instead of back tracking from the beginning.
Also it might be quicker if you can just do a quick throw to get into the lair instead of using an eye or being a spectre since those move relatively slow.

As I said before, 55m could be possible. My last run, without the slightly better routes I realized, me failing to navigate through the forts, running out of potions and dying multiple times at the end was at 53:55. So I think 45-50min can bo done easily.

The run you have done appears to be quite different from mine, so I can't really tell if you are faster in some parts. But at the beginning going through the river to Rivertown seams a lot faster to me.

I have tried to use the pyramids to skip all the boss fights at the end, but the final bossfight doesn't trigger unless you have fought in all of the forts. As you said, going from fort to fort using the teleporters might save some time, so I'm going to try that.
Prepared savegames: you have to create the other save game DURING the speed run itself I believe for this to be okay. In which case it's a RTA with resets. Confirm this with someone though because this may only be true for TASes.

Otherwise, I didn't watch your runs so you're probably skipping this thing already but in case you didn't know there's an easy way to skip the boss who's responsible for the dwarven artifact disappearing who's required to be defeated before getting the dwarf to join the council. Just hit the portcullis lever and run through to the other room (in the dwarven mines).

Are you saying there's no way to save time with the pyramids if you just use them to backtrack? Or maybe you're already doing that. Is there any point in using the dupe glitch with the golden vase and the key or is that skipped too?
At the moment,my run is all about playing the game with all the quests, as they were intended. Those two skips you mentioned were completely new to me. I'm not sure which golden vase and key you are talking about, so it'd be nice if you could explain that one.

I already use the pyramids to save time by backtracking. What I meant was using them to teleport to unexplored areas. As far as I can tell teleporting along stright lines barely saves any time, but fot places like the forts at the end this would be usefull. Last time I played, I was trying to work out timings to know when and where to drop them in the unexplored area.

It's no surprise to me that you haven't seen any of my rubs, as I have neither streamed nor uploaded them yet, as I wanted to record a rgood run first. Although I might as well upload ny current best run and submit a finished version in the future.
The problem right now is that I am on vacation, so I don't always have internet access, let alone acces to my game or run.

Okay, well the golden jug thing is in the garden with the bees and wasps. This page has more info on it. The idea is opening it gives you enough xp to reach the next level (it's opened with a key you're supposed to receive from one of the monsters) but if you could dupe both it and the key many times it should give you its reward each time... I think I read about someone succeeding at this on some forum once.

http://www.gamebanshee.com/divinedivinity/locations/sphereofmagic.php (it's vase number 6 in the map)

There's also the wishing well. You know that one right? It gives you rewards like extra stats or an extra level if you give it sufficient money (I think the second highest amount is enough for the extra level and paying more doesn't give you two levels, but you CAN get up to 10 points in a chosen stat by being generous). It's a bit out of the way but I don't remember if it counts as a quest.

Is it easy to define "as they were intended" for the quests? Cause the possible categories that I can see for this game would be either any% (do what you like) any% no major skips (if there were any that completely transformed the run and cut down zounds of time), 100% (if you're doing all the quests that you can and whatever else goes into the definition). The last one is community defined, i.e. we could agree that all quests (or as many of them as you can do during a single playthrough) need to be completed but probably not max levels or anything like that if it induces a great amount of grinding. I get you're doing any% no major skips then?

If there's mutually exclusive quests you'd have to choose the fastest one I suppose.

Oh yeah and Moriendor (the guy I meant in the dwarven mines) can also be polymorphed but you don't get any xp for killing him anyway and skipping him in the way I described doesn't seem to break the game at all, it gives you the next cutscene as per usual when you enter the room with the altar and everything has been fine for me ever since. BTW I'm running the GOG version in case that affects this.

This is a massive strategy guide for the game in case you never found it:
http://www.gamerzines.com/guides/divine-divinity-strategy-guide.html

I didn't read much of it myself because I still haven't actually finished my first playthrough... You probably wanna look out for any more threads and FAQs etc. on the Internet. Who knows what people have discovered over the ages.

Lastly did you know you can access the gnome garden aread (bees and wasps) by tele stoning out of the big town whose name I've forgotten. It's somewhere to the south west to the city on the same map that contains it... But this might cause glitchyness and I don't think you can finish the game normally by doing that but you could maybe access the golden jug earlier? You'll have to experiment with this stuff.

You can surely use the tele stones to get across rivers and such faster can't you? Or doesn't it let you throw them across untraversable terrain?

EDIT: another interesting thread. http://steamcommunity.com/app/214170/discussions/0/648817377432211134/?insideModal=1

Note the mention of screen scrolling without moving... I doubt everyone realized this. I got stuck in this mode once and couldn't get out because I didn't know what had caused it.

EDIT EDIT: There's another very interesting thing in the thread above: you can manipulate bookshelves to give you spellbooks. Ofc this applies to anything else as well so a segmented run could look very different from SS.

Any% no mayor skips might be thecorrect definition. I basically do the whole mainquest storyline without any significant skips. Whenever I am offered to choose between two quests to progress, I of course take the shorter route.

I have looked through the links you posted and have found that they are not too terribly usefull. They focus on some things, I don't need:
Easy ways to get experience: There are only few skills I need in my playthrough, the most important one beeing Deadly Gift The fist boss I need this for is the Succubus. By the time I get there I'm already lvl 4, missibg only 20k exp. To level up, all I need to do is to kill 2 monsters.
Survival tipps: For surviving there is only one thing I need: Shadow Potions.
Killing methodes: The easiest way to kill anything are scorpion traps. Another advantage they have, is the fact that spawning them does not break invisibility. The only issue I have experienced is them not focusing not on what they are supposed to kill. I have read several other methodes which might be better, but as I said, I can't test them right now.

Screenscrolling in combination is already paet of my route. For example:
At the beginning of the game, I immedeatly throw my pyramide to Rivertown to gain early access to a statue. Doing this involves teleporting over  the river to the east of the village. This saved me about 30secs over my previous route.

I wasn't aware of any of the glitches you told me. When I started running the game, it was just a childhood memory for me and I didn't spend too much time playing it in the past.

Finaly I am glad to hear that there are other  people working on this game. Once I am back home I will upload my roures etc., maybe you can use them.

EDIT: Just in case you're wondering. The edits I do,  are usually corrections of mistakes I overlooked while writing. As English is not my first language snd writing on an E-Reader is a pain, there are always many to be found.

I don't run the game per say (I'm not a speedrunner really), I often just mess around and look for glitches and things and then share what I've found when someone starts the thread... That and I show up when it's time to verify.

PS Keep an eye out for more glitches! This game appears to be full of them.
Still, I'm glad to have someone experienced helping. As this is the first game I try to run, I might lack the experience to see where glitches can be found. (I did find one that was already known by accident)

Although this game has a lot of glitches to offer, I'm not aware of any that somehow take effect on the story or quests. Apart from that I can't think of anything that could speed up the run even more.

When it comes to submitting a run, I still have a few questiones, but I'll keep them for when it's time fr that.  I'll read u in the forums first and then then find somebody to ask.
Did you see the submission instructions? Might be worth reading them now just in case you'll need to submit some quality samples or something like that. Tech forum section is the best for all that.

Anyway good luck!

Did you consider using some kind of luck manipulation right at the start? Or is it really not useful? You could do the manipulation, then save for the purpose of practising the rest of the run after that, and then you're ready whenever you get the luck in an actual attempt.

Also maybe you could create an English version of the route using GT and just correct things here and there so it's understandable (it's mostly okay I think) because it's going to be tough in case non-German speakers want to participate at any point (or just review them later). I suggest using English in the future actually Smiley your decision of course.

PS: I started a strategy guide page for this game. It's fairly simple to edit. General trick and glitch information go into their subpage and notes for each category go into their own subpage as per the general guidelines. When you want to actually create one of the red link pages you just click on the link and it gives you the editing window. I think each class warrants a category of its own, wouldn't you agree? Or are the differences actually too small? The rogue is the only one that can use the crouch stamina refill, the mage has a blink style teleport right? The warrior just gets a whirlwind attack... Otherwise you can level up any skill you like... so maybe they're too similar in the end, not like Diablo/Diablo 2 where each class has all unique skills.

Do you agree? Also, what different categories would be acceptable generally? What would low% mean, what would 100% mean? It doesn't have to be resolved right now of course. Another question is what are the "major skips" that you're not doing? Someone said you can't skip story missions anyway? Maybe there is no "no major skips" category either then.

The only skills I use so far in my run are Meteorstrike and Deadly Gift.
Meteorstrike is used to quickly kill 2 monsters to get to lvl 6 for Deadly Gift. Deadly Gift of course is used to kill everything else.
Getting Meteorstrike as a spellbook wouldn't save any time, as I learn the skill while I have to wait for a cutscene.
The Deadly Gift spellbook would save me about 20secs, so I could use it. If I got one in an attempt, I would go for it, although I can not rely on it.
Looking whether there is a skillbook in the bookshelf doesn't cost me any time, as I have to open it anyways to duplicate an item.

You are probably right that I should translate the run explanation. In future, I will still create my documents in german, but once I upload, I will translate them and provide both versions

Whoops forgot to give you the link...

https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Divine_Divinity/

^ That's completely optional but it should be easy enough to at least list all the glitches and tricks there so they can all be found in the same place with sufficiently detailed explanations. Put the tricks in the subpage (I also started that one) and your route notes would belong here:
https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/index.php?title=Divine_Divinity/any_%25_SS&action=edit&redlink=1

To edit, you can basically use any other nice-looking strategy guide page for reference or even copy-paste and edit as appropriate.

EDIT: aren't you going to need commanding aura or whatever the skill is called that makes scorpions follow you around?
EDIT EDIT: could you manipulate the statue somewhere? would that be useful?

I'll take a look at it now, but I won't have the time to work on it today. This has to wait until tomorrow after school.

I always spawn 10 or so scorpions near the boss. As you can spawn them and stay invisible, this isn't a problem. While they kill the boss, I multiply the traps, if I'm running low on them.

If you are interested in playing around or experimenting I found something interesting:
Go to the Wastelands and move to the very south of the map, to the edge where there are no cliffs. Throw one pyramid some way across the edge of the map and then teleport there.
After doning this, I found myself in a nearly blank map, with a few interesting things. While exploring, I tried to create a makeshift map, with the most interesting things. You'll fine a dungeon, an axe and a NPC called "Conversation". Maybe I've missed something.
I'll provide the map and a savegame in the Wastelands, in case you want to explore it for yourself.

What do you mean with manipulating the statue?

EDIT: Is there a way to put the picture into a spoiler?

Just use the "hidden" tag to hide things.

Manipulating the frog statuette to appear in a shop or something I mean.

The area you found is apparently not the only OOB area in the game. Exiting the Verdistis map to the South, like I mentioned, should be possible.

Another cool-looking site I found. http://kiya.xanlosch.de/versuch.html
It has a lot of cool stuff written into the by-area texts. Like did you know you can steal stuff by dragging a barrel or chest into your inventory, putting whatever you want inside it and opening it later to retrieve them?

Apparently cat statues work just as well as frog statues (I haven't tried the spider one yet), so I don't have to bother hoping for a frog.

The site you linked is the one I got my maps from, although I did not read the text written underneath. I think I have read tricks like the poet thing, which I used until I discovered shadowpotions,  on other sites. The barrel trick is known to me, but like most other cool things, I have no need for them in my current route.

There is nothing in my post I can apply the tag to, as the picture is only attatched to my post. It shows up in the post for some reason.

EDIT: I've now tested the spider statue as well and it works too.
I have now added the english translation for the Route Explanation. I used a Google Translation of the original and then corrected most mistakes. It is by far not perfect and I will make some changes once I have the time to, but it should be intelligible as it is right now.

You have to upload the picture to somewhere first looks like. Then use the img tag inside the hidden tag.

Are you saying the frog isn't faster than the other two? I really thought it was but I'm remembering wrong then. I think the spider must be the strongest right?
Edit history:
Bantaris: 2014-09-26 02:39:57 pm
ok, I thought I could just attatch it to my post, but that leaves me unable to hide it.

The frog in the morphed status is faster than the other statues, but that's not what I'm using. As ogam described in the first post, you use the statue, crouch, use it again and uncrouch. In the attatched video you can see me crouching during the first morphing animation (the little stutter). The speed of the statue has no effect on the final speed.

EDIT: I have started work on the strategy guide. I used the one I posted earlier as a base and then rewrote it.

I was about to suggest you post the notes on the Any% page but you're already ahead of me there. I really have absolutely no comments on any of it Smiley I didn't even read the parts that come after the point where my playthrough (which I wanna finish during the Christmas break) is.

Oh and does the statuette glitch make you as fast as you would be in morphed form? I'll probably understand all of this when the first uploaded WIP video is out so don't bother answering really Tongue
