Cool.200th post.lol.
Please, don't think i've forgotten of this. I can record now that my video capture card is shipping, and in the meantime I can at least make practice videos with a camera I have with a TV in function.

And because this game is my absolute favorite of all time, I want this run to be as good as possible,

But don't expect me to finish anytime soon. I've been planning this for almost a year now and there's been a lot going on. But I can at least record every time I get the chance now and not get idscouraged.
100% runs=great to watch
No sweat man, knock it out as ya can.  The important thing is for you to feel good about your results, even if they take awhile.  Ya might even wind up with more time than ya think right now, so you might wind up even more content than otherwise.  Grin
about the previous run:

spinning then jumping on my game seems to be about 0.1 secs slower than constantly spinning

the fake 'trojan' bowser is horrible, taking longer than 2 minutes, whereas my best time was about a minute, and it only took me three or four attacks

hes really bad at avoiding enemies

and also he could have done the first few segments of the run a little better.

judging by your comments and tests, it seems like you could do about 4:40, but maybe not. good luck and keep trying.

Then you're jumping at the wrong time.  The idea is to jump just before Mario slows down to normal running speed.

Also, make sure that you tap A (not hold A) so that you only do a small jump.

Really, when you constantly spin, there is good half a second between spins where Mario is standing on the spot.  By jumping (and therefore moving forward) during this time, you will obviously cover ground faster.  Just don't jump too early.
I was trying that on the PAL version, though. Maybe it's harder to pick the time to jump, perhaps?
I will get this run done this year, I swear, but it probably won't be my first run.

But if it's any consolation I have no tolerance for mistakes and will defend this run as it is my favorite game of all time.

And I think maybe less than 4:40.

I hope.

I just want to make a very good run for this very good game.
Food goes in here
Sounds good man, best of luck to you. I really enjoyed this game also, it's a classic.

Do you have anything recorded so far?
Paper Mario is also MY favorite game of all time! The reason being it was the first rpg i've ever played, and how long it is(side quests included.)

Also, are single segments and segmanted goals seperate catagories? I'm wondering this because I have been thinking about trying out a SS Paper Mario run! (This would take atleast half a year to plan, and a few monthes to execute) I have intrest in trying this! This would'nt be done anytime soon due to school though.
100% runs=great to watch
Single segment and segmented are indeed categories.
I will officially start recording as soon as School's out.

Ive been planning a paper mario single segment run, that and wind waker are the reasons I really came here.
Im actually suprised that Wak hasn't been beaten yet.
I can get within 10-15 minutes of Waks run with no planning what so ever (Segmented).  Just basic speedrunning knowledge (I R TEH NOSTALGIA WHORE).
There aren't any segments that really need to be saved before.
I would expect a game like paper mario to have more attempts at this.
Shall me and jacob have a race?
Floogal is planning a segmented run that should the current run by 40 minutes? I forgot, but here is the thread. In his sig is the segmented route.

Well, the first thing I advise for any starting runner is to watch the current record to see what you may be able to pick. Also, bear in mind, that run was segmented, so ideally, your run will probably be around 20-30 minutes slower. Also, I believe there is a topic this game, I'd advise searching for it. Don't be afraid to bump an old thread. We prefer that over the creation of a new one.

the current single-segment record is 4:15:09 by 0xwas btw http://www40.atwiki.jp/niconamarta/pages/131.html (not sure when he starts timing though)

should talk to him about routing and stuff
Why shoot when we can jump on them
I'm a new speed runner who wants to run Paper Mario as well and I'm looking for any tips and tricks that anyone one would wanna share along with any tactic disscussions
Why shoot when we can jump on them
Currently working out a route based on the run currently being hosted by SDA and can still use all the help i can get
A short segment for an end of the game clip, saves a few minutes, the explantion is a bit lacking, but try it a few times yourself and you'll see how easy it is.

The sushi glitch is easy enough, just look for the position I'm in when Mario jumps on sushi, do it a few times yourself all it takes is correct positioning to get right. WARNING: You need to complete murder mystery and kill Jr. Troopa before you use this glitch, or you can kill Jr. Troopa with Sushi while in the glitch, the fight is scriped on screen though, so once Mario reaches a certain point (even off the path or off the "world" Jr. Troopa WILL stop you to fight.

P.S - Watch out for save/coin blocks with this glitch you cannot go under them, probably has something to do with the shadow messing up Sushi's surf, though I never tried diving under the shadow myself.

Other random tidbits:
-Watch 0xwas's stuff, I'm sure he has both the above glitch's and more, along with the best/most consistant route possible. He's a PM beast.

-Almost every quiz/Q&A has set answers in this game, just watch a video and figure out the order; like: Peach's Quiz for the minigame goes 2-1-3-1-3-1-2-2-1-1. Every time, so either memorize that or just spam 1's to win.

-Learn the Yoshi kid placement, missing one and then having to figure out which one and where could cost a lot of time.

- The first Life Shroom comes in DDD, if you want to attempt riskier fights I suggest grabbing this as a fail safe, it isn't far out of the way and if you get the super block at the oasis it is on the way.

- If your good at power bounces the firebar glitch makes getting down to 1 HP for the Lava Pirahna fight easy, mega rush and ice power means you could do the fight like the any%.
Why shoot when we can jump on them
thanks much for that
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay I cleaned up this thread a bit. Just something to mention.

PaperMarioRunner: Please wait instead of bumping threads pointlessly, people will (and have already) give you info on speedrunning the game eventually.
Why shoot when we can jump on them
ok I will sorry for that i'm a bit impatient today

I was really curious if anyone ever thought to look into the vc lag difference. iirc the game doesn't seem to lag anywhere but it could be something to look into. Also, would lag affect the ingame timer and are there any other version differences from vc to n64?
EDIT: does anyone have a link to a pastebin or something of the route 0xwas uses
I assume 0xwas does, although I'd prefer a link to the run, if possible, I seem to have misplaced the link to a WR *or something like that* that was given to me awhile ago.

As for the lag I haven't noticed a difference myself, but I'll also admit that the changeover I had between the two was several months, so I may be forgetting some lag somewhere.

Random extra note, have you been running this? I did a random fun-run awhile ago 100% in one sitting, and then decided to try an any% RTA, I got to the end of chapter 5 before dying (what I get for not planning anything) after chapter 4 (I chose save and continue for Peach) I was only 20 or so minutes behind the segmented run (give or take a few extra minutes). No clue how good/bad that is. I also have a new favorite badge because of the fun-run, chill-out, only costs 3 star pieces from the shop lady and you can have 5 by then, so picking out 3 was easy enough. Saves you from first strikes, useless in a speedrun but it saves the headache of losing HP when you screw up.

I have the route but Japanese.

I don't have translated route right now but you may be able to read with this

I'll translate my route later. Questions are welcome.
