Oh shit! don't leave us hanging man! I wanna know about that movement glitch.
One hand is enough.
Its not a glitch, just a few useful exploits. Sorry to get you over-hyped!

Basically, it turns out that continually dodge-rolling into and out of the assault rifle's melee attack is just as fast if not slightly faster than boosting, but uses absolutely no meter. This can be used to cover long distances quickly without having to let the meter recharge.

Also, doing the boost melee and rolling back into boost is a quick way to keep your meter up when the AR's melee is impractical. Have to be very careful about using this though as the hitbox on this is massive and even recoils you back when going uphill. Both of these are pretty much unusable with enemies very close, due to the auto-targeting... so it's a speed up for in-between sections.
One hand is enough.

Just got a 1:55:09 at final boss kill. I credit most of that time gained to the assault rifle melee dashing. First two acts were sloppy due to being unused to this form of movement and weapon loadout, and some bad luck didn't help either. (a sniper headshot me into AR on casual, seriously) Not uploading this one to youtube for the sloppy start.

This is overall a much more solid run, with 1:51:52 RTA at final boss kill. was less sloppy in the first few splits, and used a checkpoint reload exploit on grand hill to move up Burns and the demo team close to the door that needed to go boom. I think I should be able to get below 1:50:00, but it's going to be rough. *EDIT* first few missions were actually kinda bleh, but I kept going since I had great luck with upgrade drops.

I'm currently converting/exporting the raw video file of the game footage, and should have that up on youtube by tomorrow.
*EDIT*

There's the HD video of the run. Time to go beat it too soon to justify all that converting, uploading, and processing... heh.

1:51:12 RTA and 1:32:29 in-game time at final boss kill. This was a very solid run with a bad final boss. At least I have a run with visual proof that I was doing ALL of the controls with just my left hand; which is how I have been doing all of these runs.

sub 1:51 is very much in reach, but I don't know if I can realistically get sub 1:50 without new strats. Time to continue searching for possibilities I suppose.

*EDIT* Youtube upload of the stream if you so prefer
Oh wow, I just checked back today to see how things were going.

I might get back to running this game since my record was about 1:53:xx. I can probably figure something out. I'll read up and research.
One hand is enough.
The more people running this the better! Do you have the equipment to record/stream, Evil_Toaster? If so, I'd love to see a run of yours; I'm sure there is variance in our strategies and we could probably help each other out.

If you can stream in particular, I'd love to do a race sometime, especially since our PBs are so close.
Well the main difference is I don't have DLC weapons. I figured they wouldn't even be allowed. I'm watching your run now and I'm like damn these weapons are so fair.

I'll try to set something up so I can stream, but it wouldn't be a particularly good quality unless I get some new equipment.
One hand is enough.
I basically just consider using the DLC weapons a different category, but I have to say I'm very impressed that you could get a 1:53:xx without them. I'm definitely missing something.
Do note that 1:53:xx was the time given at the end of the game, not sure if that's different than any official methods of timing, but to my understanding any game that has an in game timer that is proven to be reliable (and I just assume this one is) then that is the official benchmark.

Also if you wanna talk about it you can send me a skype name, assuming you have it.
One hand is enough.
The in-game timer is NOT reliable. It does not count any time that enemies are not spawned. This is fine for ILs, but not for a full game run. Basically, you could clear an area, then sit there for an hour without that time counting against you. That definitely is not in the spirit of a speedrun; all progression should be optimized.

My final in-game time after the credits was 1:37:49, for reference.

Ah, okay then. In that case I'm probably far behind. But I also don't have those guns. I'll run it again sometime next week with a real timer and see how it goes. I'll have to research around for anything new too. I can already say you're method of boosting is nonoptimal. Boosting in a diagonal direction after initiating a boost in a forward direction makes you boost around 1.4x faster. e.g. boost forward, then start boosting forward-right.

The meterless boosting with the punches is cool though. Stealing that.
One hand is enough.
Well dang, I thought that might be faster but not that much faster. I'll definitely practice boosting diagonally.

Thanks! I'm rather proud of the melee dashing, it saves minutes over the course of the run.

1:49:51 RTA at final boss kill, with 1:31:38 in-game timer at that point.

So many things wrong with this run, particularly in act 1-3 and 5-3  but the inclusion of drifting (which is what I'm calling the diagonal-boosting Toaster mentioned) and a checkpoint reload in act 4 made a pretty large difference. I should be getting 1:48:xx or better soon.

1:48:17 RTA at final boss kill, 1:30:14 in-game time at that point. And now, the highlight description since it says pretty much everything I want to:

"Very, Very solid run other than missing the one cycle on the 2nd Argus in Act 2. Only highlighted through the final boss kill because twitch decided to not record all of the credits sequence. Final RTA time after credits was 1:53:53 with 1:35:34 in-game time at that point. I'll upload the HD recording to youtube for proof if I don't beat this soon. I should be able to get 1:47:xx though. (note: forgot to set the delay on my webcam to match the delay from the pvr until act 3)"

*EDIT*

Well, I don't have the time or energy to do attempts of this on the weekends, so here's an HD version of the 1:48:17.

1:46:58 RTA at final boss kill, 1:28:36 in-game time at that point. I was very surprised that I got a sub 1:47 already. 1:45:xx is definitely possible but dang it'll be hard unless some more strats are found.

EDIT: HD copy of the run

The Top of the Bottom
Awesome stuff! I can't wait to start running this game!

Best of luck getting started, MGSPhantom! Feel free to ask about whatever.

1:46:00 real time, 1:28:09 in-game time at that point. Honestly, it's so ridiculous to get that close to a 1:45:xx

As usual, I'll upload the HD recording of the gameplay if I don't get anything better this week.

Great times dude!

Do you always play with just your left hand? Is there an advantage to this? I'm sorry if it's a medical issue or something, but I have to know.
One hand is enough.
Thanks!

Yeah, I always play with just my left hand. I've had a condition called hemiparesis since birth, which lowers feeling, coordination, and strength in the right side of my body. I'm not very deformed from it (as you can probably tell from my right hand being in view), but I definitely play better one-handed when possible. I started playing with the grip you see in the video when I first got a PS2, so I've had about a dozen years of practice.

No worries about asking that question! If I were to expose something like this to the world and not be ready to answer inquiries about it that'd just be ridiculous.

Thanks for being so cool about it. That's pretty inspirational. The human body's ability to adapt is truly remarkable. Can't wait to see the 1:45!

Can someone explain the quick reload trick to me. I must have missed it somewhere.
One hand is enough.
I'm sorry, you don't get to see a 1:45...

http://www.twitch.tv/halfcoordinated/c/2800938

... because I just got a freaking 1:44:19! game time at final boss kill was 1:26:18. The big difference in this run, honestly, I think is that I played with the Italian voice track. Yes, I think the run went very well gameplay-wise, but I don't see how I saved that much time just through better play (and amazing upgrade luck). In any case, I'll probably have the HD recording up in a few days.

Caveberry, the quick reload trick is pretty simple. Just switch off of the weapon as soon as "reloading" appears in the ammo bar and immediately switch back.
trepidation
jeeze... I really wanted to see a 1:45...

J/K! This time is amazing. In your previous posts you made it sound like you had maxed things out. How much further do you think you can go? It might be worth the time to check all the languages to find out which is the fastest.

I'd like to see what you could do without the DLC though. The generic version will probably end up being the preferred version. A sub-category will probably not be good for the health of the game.
holy Half, I just remembered that I'm pretty sure my cousin has this game for xbox! Time to see if I can steal his copy and get to learning! Smiley
