Very faced paced third person shooter that is begging me to be speed ran.

After a couple runs without much pre planning, it seems like a straight forward game to run to me. There are a lot of segments you can just boost past and skip without missing anything. But there are also segments where all enemies have to be killed to continue. Figuring out which segments of the game are skippable by just running past it will be important. I am working on this as I write.

The only other major things to take into account are weapon choices and upgrades. On harder difficulties this will likely be more important. I've usually been sticking with fully upgrading the Heavy Machine Gun. It wrecks mini bosses (and normal bosses) pretty easy and one hit headshots everyone else. I also carry the Assault Rifle for long range shooting mostly, and the Rocket Launcher for getting rid of mini bosses quickly. I haven't experimented much with the other guns but this loadout seems solid to me.

On casual difficulty, my current record is around 2:38. Obviously it's easier to skip past enemies and kill bosses faster on casual mode. There's also much less one hit deaths, so as long as you watch out for physics kills it's hard to die.

As far as glitches or major skips go, I am aware of none. I tried looking but I don't think anyone has found anything interesting. The game seems pretty solid in that regard.

The only thing that I won't know how will work is timing the run. In game time seems reliable and does not slow down the timer when you activate slow motion, but there are parts in the game that I believe do not count towards the timer. Mostly in game cutscene segments before or after a mission. Using real time could work but there are many segments that are scripted or on rails, and I think a few of those segments end the mission (stopping the timer) once all enemies are clear, but the rest of the on rails segment continues. There's also the possibility of treating every single mission separately but that would be weird.

So yeah, I'm gonna keep researching and if anyone else has ideas, techniques, tips tricks or whatever, let's talk about it here. I might also be uploading some videos for certain segments eventually, and will edit this post (or make a new one) when I get more information.

I've got this game and love it. I can completely agree, this game is just begging to have a speedrun. But, I fear that the weapon system may not be that straight forward.

Platinum did a great job at giving each gun it's own strengths and weaknesses. Somehow, I don't think the "keep these three guns the whole game" approach is going to be the most optimal decision. Each gun has a different melee and this complicates things even more, because even though the gun might be useless at the time, its' melee may not be. The shotgun's you can charge up, making it potentially the strongest melee in the game. The disk launcher gives you infinite melee, and the assault rifle (I believe) let's you deflect projectiles back at enemies.

This is going to be a great game to run, but I don't think it will necessarily be that straightforward. The best way to get well acquainted with the weapons, IMO, is to play through god hard, where the game will basically force you to use the different weapons to proceed.
The challenge levels are where speedrunning gets very fun, and very impressive. You HAVE to kill everything to move on to the next round.
After some more experimentation, and taking Caveberry's ideas, the Disk Launcher is now probably required for this run. The infinite melee is extremely helpful, and the weapon itself is very powerful (and amazing to watch work.) And it's totally worth upgrading for the extra damage and ammo. I'm also wondering if there's a use for the LFE gun, but it's not really looking like there is.

Also, in my last run I broke two hours of in game time. (1:59:37) Again, on casual difficulty.

However, that time (and the time in the OP) was the time total displayed at the end, and I'm not sure if that records time for parts outside of missions and cutscenes. Real time, the run was probably around 2:30.
The LFE gun is incredibly useful for herding enemies together in order to group them so they all die to a single rocket/grenade. Easily lets you kill a group of Romanovs, or even the two Bias with rockets.

In particular, most of the challenge levels greatly benefit from the LFE gun.
Lots more runs and calculations later, I think an ideal run on casual difficulty could end up anywhere below 1:45:00. My personal best so far is about 1:48:00 ish but I wasn't counting the end credits sequence which after another final time is displayed. The credits take about 5:20 to beat if you do it fast, so my real time would have ended up about 1:53:00 or so.

The credits kinda sorta counts as a level and is counted towards the final time in the end of the game AFTER the credits. But I've been going by the final time after mission 5-3 (the last one). The FAQ says credits sequences like this count so I guess I'll have to add that, but yeah, it's just kinda anticlimactic after the amazing final boss battle and such. But whatever works.

But for now, I'd say 1:45:00 is the goal for a casual difficulty run. I might do some tests on normal later to see what won't work that does in casual, etc.

I'm also writing down a full strategy guide for this as well as some advanced techniques I discovered. When it's done I'll put it up here.

Some pro doing 1-3 in 4:17. He loads back to a checkpoint about 30 seconds in, which loads him back to the same spot but all the enemies behind him are automatically removed. I'm not sure if this is/should be legal or not.

Also the way he kills the second form of the boss is slightly luck based since the shockwaves from the core didn't hit him in the turret. I can't seem to get that to happen to me when I try.

I've seen runs of this part that were 3:50 ish, but this is definitely the right idea.
Reloading checkpoints to remove enemies is perfectly legal. This is done several times in RE4.
I'm actually working on running this myself, though I'm working on Hard mode with the DLC weapons (the handcannon is so useful against the larger enemies).
Sounds good. Got a time estimate on it yet?

I'll cover Casual difficulty. I would want to try a God Hard run but that would take too much practice and would be way too random. Maybe a segmented GH run would be more realistic. But I got Single Segment Casual difficulty covered. Current record is 1:41:43.
Is using dlc content considered a different category here?
I would assume it is. Especially since it would make many parts significantly easier.
I would hope so, and as for time estimate...I'm so far from that point in the planning that it wouldnt be even a remotely accurate one.  But I can already tell a general weapon make up would consist of the HC, Boost HMG, and a variable slot (depends on what the general enemy type is around).  Though that again, can change if I find out some diffrent pros/cons of several weapons.
I'm a thinker, I could break it down
Has any progress been made since February? I'm very interested in running this game.

I have been running this game for a bit now, though I haven't posted anything. I will shortly. I am curious if anyone who posted here a few months back is still into it, though.

So, a bit after that awesomely cryptic post, here I am practicing running this for the next January marathon!

Most of my work so far has gone into basic practice and routing. Before I started marathon practice, though, I had been doing it on Casual Auto, for two reasons. Firstly, I find that mode to be extremely fun with how fast-paced it is. Call me a wimp if you please, that's how I enjoy the game. I would play Hard Auto if it existed. Tongue Secondly, for speedrunning I almost always approach game modes and settings with the goal of "fastest possible, period," not "most manly/impressive."

Anyway, what that means is that my strategies were not only a lot more aggressive due to the Casual difficulty, but they also centered around getting a good angle to start chaining. My methods have to change now, and I'm basically starting over from scratch.

If Cody or anyone else who's posted here has any tips, strategies, or videos (anything at all!) I would really appreciate you sharing them. Once I have fairly solid strats for missions or videos of my own, I will do likewise. Thanks in advance!

One last note, I gave an initial estimate of 3h15m for the run, to factor in the Normal or Hard difficulty (haven't decided, will depend on if a significantly faster strat isn't feasible on Hard for a live run), shit happens, and any setup time. However, after a little more research and routing estimates, I think that might still be really freaking high. I will focus my efforts over the next 1-2 weeks on save-scumming test runs so that I can get a more accurate estimate.

I'm just as interested in this run as I was 6 months ago. I guess I just wish it were more popular, and that there were more people to devote the time and energy required to fully develop all the strategies necessary for a good run. It's no fun to do a run by yourself... That, and you probably won't find every time saver available without help. (I hope I'm not being offensive.)

Sorry, I'd help, but I have 2 kids and work a full time job, etc. etc.

Well, I've made it through all of Act 1 at a satisfactory speed, and now I'm just recording the missions individually to demo that. So far I've done 1-1 through 1-3. Please go to the YT page for each video to see further notes.

1-1 and 1-2:

1-3: (Will probably record new one eventually; again, see YT page)

Everybody's favorite monster
So i have started playing through Vanquish again today to see if i can manage something for the marathon. Probably will be on casual or casual auto just for speedrunning purpose. Will keep you posted.

Edit: Uyama has spoken. Normal it will be

You might find Casual notably easier than Casual Auto.  I suppose I would have to explain the way difficulties work to sell that one though.  Having the guide can be useful here and there.

I thought I saw a run of this title before.  Perhaps I misremember.  All the same, I just know a trick or so here and there.

I am interested to see what tricks you know. If you are willing to share please do so.

First the matter of difficulty differences.  I'll ask again if you wish to know them.  Also, did you intend to have the DLC weapons?  Do you intend to play straight on through (getting upgrades) or load up missions?  Exploit death/continues (from menu)?  Have you tested when the clock runs and does not run?

Obviously fleeing combat (when faster) would be advised where applicable.  What I'm most able to offer would be run notes from the past (lots of God Hard runwork and various focus runs).  One small trick (known by the guide too), would be to plant an explosive in 5-1, rush past the BIA and continue the mission (setting off the explosion to instant kill it without using ammo).  Another instant kill (whether it would be faster or not is up to you to test) *more of a combat trick for higher settings* would be in what I think was 2-5 or so.  The mission with the first BIA (2x on GH).  When the first G-units turn up, they come from a hangar that Frags and rockets can destroy.  Anything inside the hangar when destroyed will die instantly (you too).  One frag/rocket into it as it opens.  The leftside is where two G-units come from.  Destroying the first like this prevents the second spawn.  If you rush to the rightside hangar after that and regularly destroy it while occupying the ghangar (don't leave or it closes), you can then  bait the BIA (UQuad mode) inside, rush out and frag/rocket it too before proceeding.

There are lots of points where you can restart to skip certain fight waves and things like that.  I'd have to difffer to my notes for more, but the area just after said BIA has lots of that to exploit.  I just wonder if overpowered Casual settings would let you go faster the old fashioned way.  On you to test it.

If you're indeed interested, I can provide the values known and links to the GS/GFAQs coverage I've got then discuss it with you as needed (Ex: Thinks like pure boost melee stun locking a Buzzard without overheating).
Not sure if anyone is still doing anything with this game. Ive been giving it a go. Been trying out alot of things on it as well, but yeah - recording my tries using realtime, and after watching some of the material available, i think i might be able to shave off even more time Cheesy .
As for the time i got 2:33:38 on casual as my full time. No death run will hopefully be possible. I manage to die on the most random locations so hopefully ill find a solution to that. But does anyone have a full time so i might have something to try and aim for? Cheesy
Sadly, I got nothing but 100% support for speed running this game. I can't praise it enough. My erection upon hearing its name can destroy brick walls. <3
