Crisis Core update: Just pulled off a 6:28:17 at final boss (7:05:15 final save). I'm wanting to say 7 1/2 - 8 still for safety though, as I was definitely going strats that wouldn't be marathon safe on this run (well, mainly one strat). I'll start within the next few weeks to do some marathon route strats to see what I can do for time while adding in potential donation incentives.
I want off the ride....

Just an update, my FF4 practice is going well enough that I can safely say I'll have a good run by March. I'm fairly confident that it will be under 3:40 but hold off on changing my estimate for now. As for the charity, any charity you think is a worthy cause is fine for me, I'm not set in stone on wanting it to be one or another, though once we pick one I would like to do some research on it. I also agree that FF3DS would be very long and a little unfeasible.

*AHEM* i think you should really stick to real time estimates and NOT game time. As I told you the game doesn't count 20 minutes of playtime so thats a 4 hour estimate, unless you are saying you can tie my record at the marathon :P?

thats why i said dont change the estimate lol. and yeah i was talking in game time ofcourse

Rane makes a really good point, and it applies to everyone. When you give a time estimate, please take into account (a) I need real-time, not game-time estimates; (b) marathon luck; (c) bloody marathon luck; and, (d) donation incentives that you've thought of already.

Interestingly, since we're working on such large time scales (hours) for game estimates, we'll need some sort of plan for what to do in case there's an insanely lucky run and we get significantly ahead of schedule...
Ill have a better real time estimate once i do a bunch of RTAs, my main point was that 4:30 is probably going to be generous, but keep it at that for now. Sorry to be confusing!

Poxnor, you could always do an FFL JP 1.0 run as something to fill time, or as a donation incentive.

and (e) 'That's never happened before!'-luck, if that's not included in (b) or (c) Wink

To account for the mentioned problem of getting too far ahead of schedule, a kind of standard error (plus/minus) might be helpful.

Nah, trying to do any sort of statistics on game times buys us nothing. At the end of the day, we need to schedule for marathon luck, for every game.

I guess if we get ahead of the schedule, we could include endings; if we're on-time or running late, no watching the ending? I was on the fence about including endings anyway (either by default, or as a donation incentive) just because of the length (especially in later games)...

Another option mentioned was filler games, but I feel like that could go terribly wrong. I can't put my finger on why, but I just feel like something would get messed up on the technical side, or the quality would look sloppy and less-practiced. I'd rather stick to scheduled games that have been practiced.

I think including/not including the ending for each game would be the best way to keep us tuned to the schedule.

If people wanted, I could add a no-skips FFL/J1.0 to the schedule, but I thought the language barrier would make it a meh-watch. English FFL is so not suitable for a marathon, and FFL/J1.0 with skips would either look just like the SDA-accepted run (5% chance) or go terribly wrong (95% chance). I'd also need someone who can read the transition tables (e.g., Nitrodon) sitting there to yell out possible transition paths, hah.

What FFgamer said.

Also, while I do want to play one game (of course I want to participate in a marathon in my own house, lol), I don't want to dedicate myself to playing too much. I imagine I'll be running around doing a lot of things behind the scenes.

Edit: though, admittedly, I've been told FFL/J1.0 skips runs that go horribly wrong are still (more?) entertaining.
Everything's better with Magitek
If we need filler, we could always throw in some Theatrhythm. Wink

Great idea, Essentia. It's variable-length and entertaining.

...though, we will need a way to capture 3DS in that case. How do you even go about doing that (I know nothing about how to do this)?

I know there's a 3DS capture card but I haven't looked into it at all.

Doing direct DS/3DS video capture requires having a system that's been modded to add a USB video output.  loopy from our forum has been selling that service, though I think for a 3DS it costs a couple hundred dollars - unless someone coming to the marathon already has one or we're willing to use an emulator (which would be kind of weird due to needing to emulate the touchscreen controls), it'll be either shakycam or nothing. Sad

Darn. That was such a great contingency plan in case we got significantly ahead of schedule.  If anyone attending has one of those capturey 3Dses, please let me know. I doubt that getting one would be the best use for any money that gets set aside for equipment, unless there was some other need for DS/3DS capture (e.g., someone wants to run an FF DS game...that isn't 3).

I will personally show up and kill whomever volunteers FF4ds. I'm sorry to any and all attendees there, I promise it will be a clean kill and I will take care of the disposal myself...

Well, I think FF4/DS is the best version of FF4 that there is...but apparently, Rane will kill me if we air it.

So, I'd like to make my final goodbyes to all my friends...

Hey, I can kill Rane for you before he can kill you lol. He only lives like an hour from me, it aint a far drive lol.

Anyways, I smashed my PB on MQ Any% Last night and got 3:04.  The route is pretty easy to do now and Even bad troll doesnt slow me down too long.  I am pretty sure that funkdoc's 2:50 run may be in jeopardy soon if I stop getting greedy and dieing on easy bosses lol.  I say Donation incentive for File Name, and for Any% vs 100%.  Estimate on Any% 3:15 and 100% 4:15, Should easily be able to lower that to 4 hours since I can use the stuff I learned from Any% and imply that to 100%
I'm not modding a 3DS, so I can't help there, but if somebody has Dissidia, we could stream some random fighting among the participants, possibly with appropriate shame to the losers to entertain the audience.

I was going to actually suggest Crystal Chronicals as A) You have that in your collection Poxnor and B) you yourself said you've never played it. Neither have I, and I believe it's 4 plays no? Would be fun to have a game no one has tried as we flounder around on a game no one has played Cheesy much to the enjoyment of everyone watching!
Quote from the Crystal Chronicles wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Crystal_Chronicles): "In order to play Crystal Chronicles in multiplayer mode, each player must use a Game Boy Advance as a controller, connected to the GameCube by a Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance Cable. Each Game Boy Advance acts as its players "personal screen", with which they can control their character and access an individual menu without disrupting the flow of the game."  My old roommate had this game and we wanted to play multiplayer bad, but there was a decided lack of GBA's... Angry  It would be awesome if the devs made multiplayer possible via only one GC, which would have made too much sense, apparently.  Good try though.
1-Up!
Crystal Chronicles is a sad omisssion from this site because it's virtually impossible to record (due to having one screen and 4 gba screens with different info). Would be awesome to see a real run in a marathon.

Well, dondon151 is working on a single player segmented any% run (as far as I know, anyway... the last update is over a month old), so that's something.  That said, CC is one of the games that would benefit most from a 4 player run (as opposed to, say, New Super Mario Bros. Wii), so I have to agree that it is a very sad, if quite understandable, omission. Sad
