Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
Thanks Mike. It works now.
Let's fight to computer!
bsidwell - 1-4 (boss) - 500,100
This game has some strange quirks.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
IIRC Xexex is in Ganbare Goemon 2 (for SNES) in an amusement park arcade just like Gradius is in GG1 aka Legend of the Mystical Ninja. It does also have a PSP port though. Once again this is a great shmup choice for me. All three tourney games were at the bottom of my top25 list at shmups or kicked out at the last minute, i.e. 20-30. This is perfect range because I like them but I haven't played them to death already. I'm pretty sure this is my favorite Konami shmup too. I'm really surprised if bsidwell is saying he hasn't played it before, it's essential Konami.

I see the pattern though, Breakdown. You picked 3 Rob games. Shocked Dragon Blaze is Psikyo's best and the others have reviews. I remember cuz your description and it's downy soft.

Quote from Breakdown:
Other games I considered:  My initial thought for this week was to go with something from the Gradius or R-Type series, but passed them over as I didn't want to sift through all the different games, though probably any of them would've fit the bill just fine.  I did almost make a last minute switch to X-Multiply, but decided to stick with this one as it has a nicer look to it.  A part of me did really want to go with Gaiares for the Genesis, but wanted to avoid three consecutive Genesis games and there's also a "cheat" for a broken weapon that there's no real way to police.  I also considered going with something classic like Gaplus or Galaxian, but while they'd fit the bill pretty nicely they get dull in a hurry.

This is a better choice for a tourney than any of the Gradius or R-Types unless you're counting Parodius so you can go with say, Sexy. Well I guess if you're going survival over score then other stuff like R-Type Delta works, although people don't seem to like getting PS1 ISO's. I think Xexex is way better but I have a real soft spot for Gaiares and I'd probably rather play it actually. Rob (lol) made a countdown for 1983 and earlier shmups, you could get some good selections out of there, although I think most of the top ones are well-known like Robotron. There were some he missed and didn't include, my favorite of these is Nova 2001 (as I was reading the list, I kept wondering where it would fall and then it didn't fall anywhere at all heh). Pretty impressive game for 1983 with a hilarious system where you pick up enemy remains for points but they block your shots (!) until you pick them up and also OMG bullet hell in 1983 kinda.

Gradius, Gaiares, Gaplus, Galaxian, lots of shit starting with G. I've always said I wanted to pick Gekirindan for an SDA tourney because it's awesome and relatively easy (better for the nonshmuppers) even if the scoring spread would be pretty flat. Also I've been playing Granada again recently, it's too awesome and it would be even awesomer for a tourney, I'm putting it in my top10 next year for reals. (!)

Doesn't help that I've never played R-type... I have no skill in this game at all Correction, I have no skill playing on a keyboard... I can get to level 3, but can't even get past the first fucking checkpoint. Not the best 2d shooter I've ever played either.

Edit: Mickey_Mage - 3 - 293100

How many different games does this take from anyway? Also, level 7 is complete BS...

stage 3 sucks ass
Normand - 7 - 988,400

Really, really enjoyed this game, which is surprising considering I'm not fond of horizontal-scrolling shmups

Since the week is almost over and I probably won't post here after this - Awesome job Breakdown. That was my favorite SDA tourney so far. Flawless game selection, I had a blast playing all of them and I think they were all amazing for a weekly tournament. Except maybe Devil Crash MD, but I'm still happy you chose it since I wouldn't have bothered getting a decent score if I had discovered it in another context. Also, I definitely prefer no voting for games

ZenicReverie - 2 - doesn't matter... 125,000 or something.

I'm really not great at shmups.  I enjoy them for a while, but get bored when I'm not making any progress.  After about 2 hours of attempts and not getting past the second spinning circle enemy, I give up.

Breakdown - 5 - 668,300

Was hoping to get to at least stage 6, but I got bit by the Batrider bug a few days ago and stopped playing.

Normand:  Awesome job this week, the later stages don't play around and making it to 7 on one credit is no small feat.  Thanks for the praise too, appreciate it. Smiley

2 more hours people!
welcome to the machine

I kinda like this game and was hoping to play it more, but got sidetracked.  Sad

Week over!

And tourney over!  Thanks for playing everybody, hope you enjoyed it.

Things I learned:

1.  Game selection is trickier than it initially seems.  The line between too simple and too complex is a fine one to walk for a weekly, plus you have to watch out for things that are easy to abuse (like infinite milking in a score week).  Also you need to pick a game fun enough that it doesn't get completely stale by the end of the week.  A lot to consider.

2.  Voting sucks, especially for the guy running it because it makes all the work outlined above into a 4 or 5x affair.  Plus depending on how it's set up, for the players it means either a week of downtime or an added distraction from the actual game for that week.  If and when I do another one of these I'm just going to select single games again.

3.  Scaled scoring is good for rewarding participation, but a pain in the ass to implement.  Week 3 in particular was a big headache for me, and I was actually pretty thankful there weren't any new faces the last couple weeks just because it made things that much easier on me.

4.  Six weeks is probably a bit long for one of these things, I think 5 is the magic number.

5.  While running on of these is definitely far more work than just playing in them, it's still a lot of fun.  I'll probably do another one at some point down the line, maybe not another SSS, and definitely not anytime soon, but eventually.

So yeah, that's about it.  If any of you have any comments, crtiques, criticisms, questions, or what have you for me I'd love to hear them.  It could probably only help me or the next guy run a better tourney the next time around.  No need for a wall of text (though if you throw one up I'll read it), but a little feedback would be nice.

Again, thanks for playing everybody.  It's been fun for me, hope you can say the same.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I liked the tourney. I don't really have any criticisms. I even liked Devil's Crush, despite how random it was.

Oh yeah, sorry I never played Xexex. I just never got around to it.

Too bad I came in this tournament late. I really wanted to play the games I missed too. It was really fun, though, and I got to get pissed off at games I've never played before (jk haha). But yea, despite some being annoying, some random, they were all really enjoyable to play, as well as extremely challenging.
Great job Breakdown!

I hadn't played any of these games before and I thought they were all very good choices (except maybe Devil Crash MD but even that was enjoyable despite me being terrible at it :P). Dragon Blaze in particular is a game I certainly won't forget about and was probably my favourite, but they were all fun in their own ways.

Everything ran smoothly and I hope you do another one of these in future, I'll definitely participate.

Thanks for organising this Breakdown, like I said it was a job well done.

P.S vote-ban Normand from the next one please, he's too good at everything Tongue
Waiting hurts my soul...
Well, there's something to be said for playing each week... I mean how in the world did I get third?  Great games and tourney, I enjoyed it.  I noticed a decline in the amount of time I was putting aside for it around week 4, but I still managed some play time up until the end.  A week of voting would have been too much down time I think, so I'm glad for the blind selection.
fucking .gif....
this definitely introduced me to games I never even heard of.

this was fun.
