Never give up!
Of all the weeks THIS had to be the one where I was busy...

Sorry, but I don't think I'm going to be able to even put up a time this week.  A pity, because for a Game Gear game this actually looked kind of nice.
fucking .gif....
18:28-ALL

FUCK THIS SHIT

all of that and this was all I could produce, fucking lame.

man I'm so pissed.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Mikwuyma - 12:51 - ALL

I would have beat Enhasa's time if I didn't die three times in the fucking spikes water spout stage  Angry

mikwuiyma - 11:52 - ALL

I died once, but I was probably going to die anyways because I fucked up the spike room. I do see enough room for improvement to get 11:18ish, but I know I'm doing something wrong because I would have to play really really well to get that time. :-/

Week over!

Glad to see GG Shinobi went over so well, and the routes and strategies employed were about as diverse as I expected.  As promised my replay is attached below.  You'll need Dega v1.15 to watch as well as the (J) version of the rom (which you should have been using anyways).

Also, if anybody has fraps or some other decent screen capture software and wouldn't mind making an .avi of this for me I'd appreciate it, I'd like to put this on youtube.  I've tried some free ones and lets just say I got what I paid for.

Well, I was going to post my route, but as I've been beaten by five minutes I think most people don't care >_>

I went Y-B-G-P for the first four stages, not because I wanted to walk on water (though that did come in handy), but for the invincibility in the cave. It did mean taking a slightly longer path (I couldn't take Red's shortcut due to lack of arts) but not having to stop for anything felt fast to me.

Green was easy once I worked out where the arts on the side of the building were, meaning I didn't have to go inside at all. And of course skipping the vast majority of pink's building was a given.

I did take the slower and safer path through Neo City, which Zenic estimated as costing me about two minutes. Room 9 in Zenic's detailed comments is the room with the monk-type enemies and absolutely no margin for error - I avoided it like the plague, which in retrospect probably wasn't such a good idea. >_>

<Enhasa> you know, i was just thinking before i looked here, i bet it's dragon blaze
<Enhasa> good choice

Let's fight to computer!
Most of you probably figured this out by reading the game description, but the secret to scoring high in Dragon Blaze is to dragon-shot everything, always, all the time. Also to be better at shmups than me.
welcome to the machine
This score is INVINCIBLE

VorpalEdge - 148,700 - Ian - 1.2
Let's fight to computer!
Not as invincible as you think, my friend.
bsidwell - 273,300 - Quaid - 1-4

I can't decide which character I like best. Ian is nice and fast (though his bomb sucks), Sonia has neato lasers, and Quaid has an awesome bomb. Rob is terrible.
Waiting hurts my soul...
uhh... this is for last week, my replay, since I seemed to be the only one to go with the obvious, pink, yellow, blue, green:

ColonelFatso - 122,600 - Ian - 1-2

ColonelFatso - 211,100 - Ian - 1-3

ColonelFatso - 240,500 - Ian - 1-3

That'll do it for tonight, methinks

No, really, that'll do it for tonight

Is there a way to manipulate that flying jackpot thinger? Its appearance seems to be totally random to me

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out myself

I wish you could practice the stages individually.  I suck at getting those jackpots and I should have way more points by 1-4

also I can only nail the Town boss' core for the tech bonus...everyone else can gtfo.

also Quaid is like the most balanced (duh), only thing I don't like is his weak bomb and his magic use, but he fills up magic fast.  Ian...dammit, they had to gimp in somewhere otherwise he'd be my #1 choice.  his magic is awesome, but it fills up slow as hell.
I want off the ride....
So; i tried this game.. and I still suck at SHMUPS.

I read that a successful dragon "launch" (button 3) on a core gives you a Technical Bonus; you guys might wanna look into that (i did it ONLY once). If you kill units that drop silver coins with the dragon "launch" it drops gold. Which is 2x score. So... try to be close for those. Tap the button to avoid using magic, hold it to use the magic...

I didn't get a guide so I thought i'd give some small tips.... Staying alive is DEFINATELY hard.

Haters gonna hate
Breakdown - 627,000 - Quaid - 1-4

I didn't expect to be quite this rusty with this game (my previous best is close to a million), but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised at that as I haven't really put any serious time into a shmup in the last 6 months or so.

A few things I'll point out for you guys:

You get an extend at 600K, and that's the only one you'll get (and I truly squandered it on this particular credit [I can dodge tha-SHIT!]).

The "flying jackpot thingers" (which I shall henceforth refer to them as, that's too awesome) are triggered by hitting a particular enemy in each stage with your dragon shot.  Keep shooting it and it'll drop gold coins for a while.  They're worth some pretty big points, so it's definitely worth finding them.  With two exceptions the enemy you have to hit looks kind of out of place among the rest of what's flying around (not in terms of the sprite, but in terms of pattern).

Technical Bonuses are key to getting a good score.  You get an extra 20K points and do typically end the fight faster than you would otherwise (at least on the first loop).  You can generally just bomb for them, but it is to your advantage to actually learn how to work your way through the pattern and get it without.  That is one more bomb you'll have to save your ass later after all.

While on the subject of bombs:  USE YOUR BOMBS.  The only good reason not to is if you truly think you can max out your stock and get the bonus for extra ones (10k for each, but you can't really get it until stage 7 at the earliest) or if you're going for a big end of game bonus (which happens after the second loop, good luck with that in a week).  Now, if you don't have those aspirations, bombs bail you out of tricky spots and let you set yourself up in a good position for when they end.  Plus if you die you lose all the bombs you have and you don't get any of them back unless you drop one upon dying, and that's no good at all.  Sure you'll kill a bunch of stuff with it you could've dragon shot, but you'll still be alive which might get you to the next boss or flying jackpot thinger.

And as an aside we're only 7 hours into the week and have almost matched the participation from last week.  Go go dragons!

Oh, and updated.

Somehow people here have the idea that speedrunning = submitting to SDA, so they won't submit a time like 5:00 - Stage 2 but they will submit a score like 100,000 - Stage 2. Um, that plus some people only play shmups in these things.
Let's fight to computer!
Flying jackpot thingy locations. I should've kept this to myself so I'd have an unfair advantage.

This game is hard for non shmupsers indeed, I think I need to find a gamepad for this as a keyboard limits the simultaneous button presses needed for this game.

Will try some more and improve my last place score tomorrow Smiley

Some people like keyboard, some like pad, some like stick. If you're gonna use a pad, me and bsidwell like the SF4 fightpad. Somewhat ironically, it's a much better shmup pad than a fighter pad (diagonals are a bit hard to activate but for shmups you typically roll into diagonals and don't need to tap-dodge diagonally). Mike has it too but I don't know if he uses it on the PC. Of course, given that it's Mad Catz, I always get the feeling like it's about to break any day, but for now it works nicely.
welcome to the machine
Control scheme honestly isn't too important.  You're mostly better off using what you're used to.  I hated keyboarding for shmups at first but I'm ok with it now.

Of course, if you're running into the keyboard button press limit, yeah, I'd invest in something else.
