If you wanted genre variety, you should have played in the arcade tourney. Sad I handpicked the games so there was tons of variety.

It's too bad there aren't enough weeks for PC or whatever. Anyway these old systems are mostly platformers, you know (especially NES heh). Also with voting, it doesn't matter if I stick a platformer vs a puzzle vs a RPG vs a strategy vs a sports, the platformer will win anyway. I don't really think people would go for a Magical Drop week or whatever.
Back in the game!
Wait, wait, wait!

I have an idea!  We could totally do a REAL tourney.  Kinda.  Pick X game.  Everyone who wants to participate has to put in $Y.  Set a deadline, all submissions have to start torrenting or be postmarked by that date.  Do a 60/30/10 split for top 3 runs, and obviously the fastest one gets hosted to SDA.  If no one can get a run hosted for some unknown, retarded reason, players get their money back or something...

Well the nes snes and gen weeks are basically the exact same thing, so it's still not too late to change that.

Not to be a pain in the ass but not putting a platforimng game into one of the weeks doesn't seem like a grand sin to me. I mean IF the pc week works out since doing that for the consoles other than psx would be stupid I guess.

If someone were so inclined, he could use gamereproductions.com or nesreproductions.com to possibly have Yume Penguin Monogatari or Gimmick! put on an NES cartridge.  Would a run on such a cartridge be accepted by SDA?

Here's a quote from gamereproductions.com's FAQ:

"Q: There's a game that I want, but you do not have it listed, can you do custom games?
A: Sure can. Just send me the rom so that I can examine it to make sure it is one that can be reproduced."

Wow holy crap. Holy crap.

Wait, doesn't Gimmick! use a special FM chip for better sound? That might be annoying to 'reproduce'.
there should be a ps2 week damn it!

cmon enhasa how could you not wanna see some for-fun god hand KMS (kick me sign) running??  or a GC week for some killer7 running.

As much as I'd like to see something like it too, not everyone can afford/download and play the games that would be in the supposed PS2 tournament. It's a little absurd to get someone to buy a game online for a tournament. That, and an emulator would require too much as far as system resources go. We're looking for common ground =p

UltimateDarius, this is just an FYI from one man to another:

money for the pizza place which is going to franchise
money for being able to win the MM3 and MM6 bounties
money for the Blastoise from the speedrun on Ebay
money for people to put into a pot in addition to the
money it would take to buy the game itself

I feel for your situation, and I don't know how persuasive you think you are, but people don't just give away easy money. Sad

Yeah, no problem, I agree with you on variety. Next time will include PC, but since we only have 4 weeks and I actually have lists for exactly these 4, I'll just wait until next time. I kinda wanted to split into DOS and Windows too, but since we don't have any DOS runs yet and that's sort of dicey, hopefully by next time, someone will record a DOS run already finally.

Or someone could do their own PC running tourney, actually. There are certainly enough good games for 5 weeks.

vgmr: It's (you know) illegal but it's exactly the same thing as playing burned CD games. If you don't tell us, and we can't tell, I mean, what can we do?

Lag: It seems to me there's a strong correlation between having a special chip for better sound and quality of game.

alucard: Obviously I'm biased against the PS2, which is my favorite gaming system of all time. Duh, what Carc said. If like UD you want people to actually buy the games for the tourney, you're going to have a participation level of like 3 people. Many people (believe it or not) don't even have a PS2 or GC or whatever. Any game that could even hope to have a slight chance of being picked is going to be popular enough that it already has runs on SDA or at least a lot of exposure. And what's the point in getting people to play a game that is already being played?

"Q: Is This Legal?
A: Creating these cart's that were never released into the US market, are Legal. None of the developer's, programmers, or company's are losing money due to this. These are game's that were never released, and therfore not taking away from any of there profits."

PS2 week seems to slip away from the other weeks which have a more retro theme. I think i would rather see a N64, GB or NEO-GEO week.

It may not be morally reprehensible, but yes, it's illegal. It's exactly as if I opened up a site selling pirated PS1 CDs or something. That "nobody is losing money" answer is the exact same argument rom sites try to use. Show Nintendo this site (actually please don't) and they will bring the hammer down. The only way someone like this would still be in business right now is because they are small enough to fly under the radar. If Nintendo doesn't tolerate rom sites which don't even generate revenue, there's no way in hell they would approve of people actually trying to profit off of roms.

It's PS1, and the games will be more like the other weeks than an N64 week will be, because they will be 2D sprite games. There is no "retro" theme either. It's a matter of availability.

Our N64 coverage is killer, so there aren't even 5 decent N64 games without runs or publicity (e.g. Mischief Makers). The only types of games I could think of either already have runs somehow (Blast Corps), wouldn't work for a weekly competition (Wonder Project J2, Ogre Battle 64), or wouldn't work at all for SDA (Sin and Punishment). GB is an ok idea but i'm not really a fan of handhelds, and I'm sure you'd agree the same selection is far below the 4 systems we're using. Maybe next time we will go SMS, GB, GBA, DOS, Windows for massive groaning. Neo Geo should maybe be lumped with arcades, because even with the Neo fans we have here, I don't know anyone at this site who has a working Neo now. (The goal is to stir up possible running for SDA.)

First one, you just never know where you'll find things like this
2nd one, wtf?
3rd, again, you never know
4th fuck off.  I've organized and hosted a dozen Melee tournaments, so I don't see why this wouldn't be feasible.

One question about the penguin game, do we have to clear both loops? There isn't much difference between loops and the only difference between endings is whether you get credits or not as far as I can tell.

X:

N64 - Surprisingly well covered. It would be difficult to come up with 5 good games for speedrunning

GB - Lots of underrated games on GB, it's worth a shot someday.

Neo-Geo: I like the Neo, but I can't think of many good games for speedrunning :-/

No sarcasm at all, I would LOVE it if you proved me wrong on as many of those as possible. I'm just being real with you. I don't want you to take it badly.

Mike: I would say 1-loop. What does SDA do? I know SGNG was 2 loops, but I can't remember any other examples. Well even if SDA is 2 loops, or it depends because the runs were done during the Wild West era, we can still do 1-loop for this tourney since it's not for SDA.

PS if we have a GB week, Kwirk will never win. Sad We'll probably be forced to play Wendy: Every Witch Way or something. Sad

PPS Neo Geo: Blue's Journey, Magician Lord, Sengoku 3, Shock Troopers, Cyber-Lip. Don't even have to get into other genres like puzzle with Magical Drop 3.

Unfortunately, you came off like a REAL prick about it.

I know enough about the real world to realize at least the first 3.  The 4th one is what ticked me off.  You could make it something simple, like SMB 100%, and like a $5 buyin so that more people are willing to play, or something...

My smash tournies averaged 25-30 people,  with the low being 15 and the high being 40.  Just so you know.

Generally if the game has a proper ending after you clear the first loop (Low G Man, other shitty Taxan games), or infinitely loops (Kick Master), then just one loop is needed. In SGNG,  you don't see an ending after the first loop, so you have to go through it all again (also there is no final stage in the first loop).

So yeah, let's just stick with one-loop.

Blue's Journey: Astoundingly mediocre platformer, there's nothing I can really recommend about it. You were right when you said playing the game for score made it better.
Magician Lord: You must hate people if you think they would actually want to play this game
Sengoku 3: Yes
Shock Troopers: Yes Yes
Cyber-Lip: Never played it, but it looks kinda shitty

There are other games like Top Hunter that would also work, but I'd rather choose a list of good games for speedrunning, and those kinds of games are lacking on the Neo-Geo.

@UD: Well SSB is way more popular than any other game which doesn't have a run up on sda we'd be playing in a ps2 tourney, so I can tell less than 10 people would be participating. Prove me wrong.

Quote from Enhasa:

My Poker Experience tells a different story. There are people who put in extra effort JUST to give away easy money at every opportunity.

In any case, UltimateDarius, I think this is totally unfeasible for the single reason that it would be MUCH easier for me to scam you out of the money than it would be for YOU to verify all the entries. ESPECIALLY if we are NOT playing on a real console.

This tournament is supposed to run on a trust basis. Adding in money means that you can't rely on people being honest, which means that you need verification to be able to give out the prices. Things go downhill from there.

If you want to, feel free to host your own pay-to-play tournament for speedrunning, but I'm fairly certain that it won't work out well.
