Well sucking at something isn't fun, no matter how much you tell yourself it is it really isn't. Knowing that I suck at this game means I won't have fun, but... it's so colorful....must....keep....playing....

EDIT: Maybe what I meant to say in the verification board Quake 2 topic was that you're a robot from the future who came here to prevent us from voting for games you don't like Wink

More like prevent everyone from INCREDIBLE AMOUNTS OF PAIN. Also don't say nobody liked that penguin game, or ristar, and I hereby declare that I have the right to say "I told you so" once this week is over (probably won't happen after I experience the awesome and the colorful and the shiny this game has to offer, but still).

edit2: Silhouette Mirage looks best at first glance, but I'll have to play it to make sure. Fun fact: you can complete umihara kawase shun in less than 2 minutes, just like the snes version.

Say what you want about some of the peculiarities of the voting, but the lineup we've gotten (Yume, Ristar, Pocky) is great. Silhouette Mirage is a great game but it might be a bit long. We had a thread a couple years ago where Kari was running it but then MrMonkeyMan had a better time or something.

Since groobo and others are giving opinions, and I get the notion some people might not actually download all 5 iso's to test, I might as well give mine. The games I don't really want to play are Little Ralph and Panzer Bandit. I'd love to play Silhouette Mirage or Umihara Kawase Shun (btw, whoever voted it already is obviously a crazy dude who has my utmost respect).

But the game I want to win, which I figure will win, is Gunners Heaven. It's easy, it's fun, it's a run 'n gun. It's like Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug had a baby that resembles its mother. It's fast-paced and you have cool movement methods like dashing/sliding and GRAPPLE HOOK. If you don't vote for Gunners Heaven, you deserve to go to Gunners Hell. (That's a nasty place where people play pachinko games and turn-based RPGs all day, and nobody wants to end up there.)

That would be me (I voted before you made that post, but I hope more people have voted for it now). I've already started practicing in hopes that it will win the poll, since I'm not playing Pocky & Rocky this week.

I think "luck manipulation hell" is more appropriate.

I just got a time of 16.82 on the first level of Umihara Kawase Shun (using the in-game timer), but can anyone tell me how I'm supposed to record PSX games? The rerecording PCSX doesn't work at all, Fraps doesn't work at all, Camtasia makes the game lag, same with SnagIt. I've even tried DarkMan's GPU Recorder 2.0 plugin to make .rec files, but it doesn't record sound, and how do I convert a .rec to say, a .avi?

Edit: 16.65! Man, I wish I could have recorded that... =/

You need to open the .rec in GPU Player (a crappy program that DarkMan made, I think) and use something like P.E.O.P.S Soft GPU 1.17 to dump an .avi. It's quite a pain to do, because GPU Player is crash happy. I still have no idea how to get sound, because SPU Recorder doesn't seem to work and instead just slows things down.

I'm guessing you're supposed to run a stopwatch of some sort for Playstation stuff though, which would be a lot easier.

I know you're being sarcastic, but I still feel the need to gigafrown about this statement. Therefore: Sad
I have the GPU player and something called gpuPeopsSoft.dll, but it doesn't show up in the plugins list in the GPU player. Only P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.16 and Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.8 show up as available video plugins, even though I have many plugins in the folder. Will P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.16 work too? If so, what do I do?

BTW, I managed to use the replay feature in the game (kinda hard with Japanese menus) and got to record the replay of my 16.65 level 1 run as a .rec. At this point, I don't care if there's any sound or not, I just want to turn it into a useful video file.

I don't know for sure, but I bet that version will work too. Under the options section for the plugin, you'll see "key configuration" (for setting the start/stop recording hotkey, among other things) and recording options (for setting the resolution and so forth). Load the .rec in GPU Player with the P.E.Op.S. driver selected and press the hotkey you set. To be on the safe side, since GPU Player sucks, try to stop the recording before the actual video ends.

Hopefully I explained this in a way that makes sense. It does look like a mess...

That didn't work, but recording from the in-game replay worked. It lagged like hell (seriously, it moved like 1 frame per second), but the video came out fine... at least framerate-wise. It looks like crap, and there's no sound, but whatever. Tongue

Anyway, thanks for your help. Smiley

I'd be cool with either little ralph or gunners heaven. Dunno which is better for speedrunning but I guess it's the latter, though I would rather play the first one because it's so similar to pop'n which I wanted to play so bad this week and I still want to. Umihara kawase is ok and I'm all for short games, but sub two minutes feels like a huge overkill, not to mention that there's a pretty much flawless run up on youtube so you'd just copy everything from there. MMM did silhouette mirage in 49 minutes so we all can agree that it's a little bit long for a weekly competition. Panzer assmuncher is crap.

There is? Where?

BTW, here's my Field 0 video: [edit: video deleted]

Of course, in a full speedrun, you should probably go to the other door in Field 0. Here's a complete overview of all the possible paths: http://www.alles.or.jp/~akfy/

I think this is the run groobo is talking about.

edit: Darn you Mike!

Also I can't get gunners heaven and little ralph to work. The first one freezes after character selection and can't mount the second one with any cd emulator. Got both ISOs from snesorama.
Yeah, I've seen that video, but that's not a speedrun of the whole game, those are just speedruns of a few selected levels put together in one video. More specifically Fields 3, 9, 15, 35, 41, 45, 48 and 52. It might be true that the levels aren't TASed, but he probably had to do those levels many times each before he did them that perfectly, then he put his best results for each level together in one video.

I don't want to play Little Ralph since I like Pop'n a lot better and that would just upset me. I don't want to play Panzer Bandit since it's like Guardian Heroes only much shittier. Silhouette Mirage is a bit too long and Umihara Kawase Shun is somewhat inaccessible if you're a newb at the game and a bit too short otherwise, so overall I pretty much agree with groobo.

For all the games this week, I got the ISO from snesorama and used psx and it worked perfectly. I don't use PCSX, I think it's a POS. So if you're trying PCSX, I don't know what to do. If I really wanted to record for PS1 week, I would use Fraps OLOLOL

Tharandir: yeah, that UKS page rules... also that youtube vid is absolutely nuts, just like UKS

Boo! Should have been UKS. I've been practicing this game all week. Tongue

I think I'll just try to do a run for UKS instead of participating in the contest this week.

Also: My best Field 0 run

Edit: BTW, I'm going for the 0 - 11 - 23 - 14 - 15 - 35 - 24 - 29 - 30 path, I think that's the fastest one. I just had my first attempt at the entire game now (so far, I've just practiced individual levels), and I got to Field 35 in about 5:20 before getting a Game Over. You start with nine lives in this game, so that basically means I died a whole bunch of times in those five minutes. Fields 23 and 15 are the only really difficult ones, so I should have been able to make it when I got to Field 35, but I did a stupid mistake to squander the only life I had left...

Edit 2: First completion in 8:47. Nothing resembling a speedrun yet, but at least it's a completion. I only had one death in this playthrough, but I wasted a lot of time otherwise. My one death was in Field 11, which is really one of the simplest levels on this path.
Never give up!
I think it's about time I speak up.

I probably won't participate much this week - only enough to get on the scoreboard at all.  I'll be too busy researching games in the event I decide to run a speed tourney of my own starting sometime in March.

If I did run a tourney at that time, would we get more participation than the current tourney had?  (What I had in mind would run quite a bit longer, and work off genre splits rather than system splits, but rest assured it'd end before finals time.)

Speaking of said research, I might have missed this earlier in the thread, but what were the 2nd-place games for the weeks of this tourney again?
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I've already talked to Aqua about this, but I'm way more than cool with him hosting a tourney of his own. Less work for me, plus from a selfish standpoint, *I* would actually be getting to play new games, which hasn't happened in the last 3 multi-game tourneys I've participated in.

About participation, this is pretty much lowest possible, and I'm pretty sure it's almost completely to do with the time of year, so March will be better. SDA following and run submission and updating and everything is always amazingly much higher during the school year. You wouldn't believe how much run submission goes down during winter break and summer break.

Check first post for weekly voting results. I wouldn't go with the actual 2nd place results for a 2nd place week, if you were planning that. I would just go with Shatterhand, El Viento, Magical Pop'n, Umihara Kawase Shun as best runners up. You can ask me more if you want to discuss.
Never give up!
It's probably not going to be an actual 2nd place week, just because the 2nd-place games don't ALL fit into the same genre.  I actually looked through the list of games used in this tourney and a good number of the non-winners made it into my lists.

I actually have two full sets of games (and a few extra games in some genres) already, and need to whittle it down to one set (which will still be large enough for leeway, because voting will be involved) for the tourney by playing the games all the way through.  (Playing through the ones for the final tourney week is gonna be hell, I can say that - and I may play those only halfway through.)  Games that don't make it into the final list will be alternates in case a game gets an SDA run before tourney time.

I've tried to make sure at least a couple of games for each week in my initial groupings don't have a cartoon or anime/manga license attached (for the uninitiated, cartoon/anime/manga license games are my thing, kind of like how Taito games are Enhasa's thing), although I'm not sure how many of them are going to make it to the official tourney set (actually, looking at it, the only trouble week for those is the fifth one).  But license games cover a lot of genres and such, so there'll be variety even if the non-license games all get bumped.
