Not to beat this dead horse into the ground, but:

MM3/MM6 bounty:

- $0 buyin
- $300 payout
- no commitment
- yearlong deadline

2 participants to date

pot tourney:

- $5 buyin or more
- < $300 payout (also, it starts at $0 and needs initial investors to work its way up, and thus will never get off the ground)
- commitment plus nonzero money investment means you have to paypal or whatever
- week or perhaps month deadline

x participants?

10 is generous, I don't believe even 5 people would participate.
Reward bickering = facepalm, but a pot = double facepalm. What is this, a back-alley dice game?

Ok you sick bastards, Yume Penguin is the winner.

I like the game ok, but I like all the other games more and would rather be playing them. I didn't expect it to win, I just threw it in there. I figured Gimmick would win because it has the best graphics and music by a ton, but I guess at SDA, we don't fall for that sort of junk. We only fall for awesome premises like fat penguins. BTW I voted for Kabuki Quantum Fighter since I have the least experience with that game, so it would be the most interesting for me.

I'm busy atm but I'll make a thread.

Week 2 voting is up, for Genesis week.

I was going to include Twinkle Tale but axed it at the last moment to spare it the ignomony of losing this week.

Honestly, I thought beforehand this was going to be the most lopsided vote. If it turns out said game doesn't win, then I will know people are voting without playing, lol.

PS I wanted to pick 5 Wolf Team games for maximum bitching ever: Granada, Arcus Odyssey, Earnest Evans, El Viento, Dino Land.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Gimmick: I found the controls kinda screwy (couldn't turn right away), and staying on the star for long periods of time would get frustrating, fast.

Journey of Silius: Didn't like how the jumping controls worked, nor how many shots it took to take down enemies

Shatterhand: I liked this game a lot actually, the only reason why I chose Yume Penguin over it is because that game is easier, and I don't have a lot of free time this week.

Kabuki Fighter: I like this game too, I just didn't buy into the hair thing too much I guess.

Yume Penguin Monogatari: KARATE-KICKIN PENGUIN FUCK YEAH
I want off the ride....
i've been playing shatterhand a lot here and there, between some down times... if i get my NES to work and I find a cart, i might actually run that in the future... never heard of the game..

now I'll be damned if no one guesses what I voted for this week...
Never give up!
Last week I'd voted for Shatterhand, it turns out.

Anyway.  This week, for me it's a very tough choice because I recognized almost all of the games (all except Granada, in fact) instantly and actually enjoy them all.

I think Lost Vikings is probably better suited for team speedrunning than for an individual runner competition like this one.  Rocket Knight Adventures?  I'd have rather seen the Genesis version of Sparkster as a choice, although I can sort of see why this one was picked.  I feel that Ristar has the toughest game mechanics of the five, at least as far as speedrunning would be concerned - and I thought the game was being run at one point.

So from there it's between El Viento and Granada.  I'll have to get back to you on this one, frankly, although Granada might have a slight edge on account of it not being a platforming sidescroller.
hello there
It's going to be Granada or Ristar for me.

Lost Vikings is cool, but why would anyone want to speedrun it? >.>
Ristar.

Fuck. Yes.

I played the hell out of the Game Gear version of the game when I was 8.

My biggest hope is that vgmr or someone runs the games that didn't win, like Shatterhand and Kabuki. Also Journey to Silius and even Jackal. I also want to see the games that weren't released in the US, but I'm realistic so I'm less hopeful about those for now.

I think Lost Vikings (as well as 2) would make for an awesome run, but you would have to bust your ass off for a weekly comp. Very challenging to optimize (roughly the opposite of Yume Penguin, lol), but due to the puzzle platforming nature, extremely well-rounded and interesting and fun to watch and plan and execute. If anyone has any doubts, look at the TAS for LV1 (2 doesn't exist yet).

Edit: Serious Cacodemon completed a Ristar run, but he never submitted. I used to feel bad about that, but now I'm thinking it probably would have been rejected anyway, so that's why he wouldn't submit.

The most interesting part for me so far is definitely the voting. I've never ever seen any voting that is so unpredictable, and it rules. The game I expected to win last week got last place, and the game I expected to win this week (although it's early) is also in last place. Also it's funny to see what people say they like or are going to vote (hi Granada), and then the actual current results don't match at all. Sad Well hopefully it's because said people haven't voted yet, because they are responsible human beings. Cheesy

I call every choice this week CRAP for a week long competition, so we will be playing CRAP no matter what wins.

El Viento TAS is 9:40 and Granada is a fantastic weekly choice too so FU shut it.

I'd rather play MY ASS than el viento this week and granada isn't loli enough. All the others are both too long and too crap.
Cigar Man
All five of the NES games are great games, but I thought that Kabuki would be the best for speedrunning.  The character moves quickly and can simply jump over a lot of the enemies.  Also, you can switch weapons without entering a menu screen.  (I just ordered the cartridge.)

I like Journey to Silius a lot, but the jumping mechanics and weapon selecting would be annoying for a speedrun.

The only reason I didn't vote for Yume is because of the auto-scrolling sections.

Gimmick! is probably too hard to speedrun for a tournament that is only a week long.

Shatterhand is an awesome game but probably a bit slower than Kabuki.  I can't believe I had never played these two games before this tournament.

I've played Lost Vikings on SNES, but I've never played any of the other Genesis games that are listed, so I'll have a good time playing those for the first time.

Yeah, we're way bettter voters than shmups.com  8)

Still need to try out Granada, but I honestly like all of the games on this shortlist. I'd probably want to play Lost Vikings the least because it's not a good game for a week-long competition (like Enhasa said, too much planning and execution involved).

Argh voters, let's make it 2/2. Undecided

Ok if this week holds, I've figured it out. It's "greatest premise" like we were saying on AIM.
wise fwom yo gwave
I voted el viento... RKA just seems awful for a speedrun with all the autoscrollers and shit. The other games are meh.

I can't believe I'm hearing Ristar hate. Huh?

Ok I lied earlier too, the game I least want to play this week was in 2nd place earlier and has a long name.

Except I voted for Yume penguin cuz it's awesome and easy.

Can't belive lost cocksuckers are in the lead. Fuck this week if this ends up winning. Just for the fyi here are some tas times:

el viento - 9:40
granada - no tas because it's crap and pointless and I don't like it
lost vikings - 35:45
ristar - 26:44
rka - 27:18

I'll bribe the pc runners to vote for ristar because it's too awesome to not win. I also hope that the next week's games don't have any tas/run anywhere because figuring everything on your own instead of copying someone was FUN in yume.

I also like to play games in tourneys that don't have previous strategies (which I did about as well as I could for SDAAT and STGT used to do pretty well... until this year). But I don't focus on it because I'm not going to pick shitty games just because they're completely unknown, and I want this to be independent and not dictated by what tasvideos or nicovideo has or doesn't have. It's too much effort to search that down anyway.

Lucky for you though, while tasvideos nesvideos's NES coverage is naturally pretty good (and ours is too), their SNES coverage is shit. So NONE of the 5 shortlist choices for SNES have a TAS. And of course, NONE of the 5 PS1 shortlist choices have a TAS either.

I think it would be really funny if we got 4 sidescrollers for this tourney, but they were all different genres. Platformer/shmup, puzzle, beat em up, and run n gun. It's actually looking like this might happen. (I voted for the top-down this week and will next week though, tbh.)

Edit: Oh also I'm cool with Lost Vikings winning because it's a great game and I have lots of previous experience, but I had no clue it would even have a chance to win. Also I want to see hella bitching a la Garegga. Do people even know what they're getting into? Somehow I don't think so.

Double edit: groobo, if you wanted Ristar to win, you should have made a "Ristar is awesome" post early in the week like you did that singlehandedly made Yume win. Tongue Ristar is full of awesome shit people like that is better than anything Nintendo ever made, and if it was a Nintendo game everyone would be like OMG best game ever.
yes, america's most blunted
ristar is dank
granada is hardcore
I don't think I'll be competing next week if TLV ends up winning. I don't like platformers where jumping is considered a special ability, and switching between all the vikings all the time and getting all three vikings to the exit in all the levels instead of just one is just tedious as hell.

Maybe I'll try to run El Viento (my vote) instead.
