I can't find a genuine speedrun for Rush 'n Attack anywhere on the Internet; I can find only a TAS video.

Rush 'n Attack is one of my favorite NES games.  Is anyone interested in seeing a genuine speedrun for this game?  I'm good at this game, so I think I can do a run fairly quickly.

Yeah Rush Attack is very nice Nes game. I am complete that many times. But never trying speedrun.

There are no Rush attack video, but good luck with you. Hopefully you try speedrun that game.

a run for this game would be cool. Its not very often you have to stop in this game. just "rush", still I would like to see someone who can handle it. I never finished this game Tongue I were close the end when I was young though. This run is not very long. 6 stages  isn´t it?
one of my favorites. iive tried speedrunning this a bit. I can do the first 3-4 levels pretty well, and nearly perfect. It is very slow paced, but very enjoyable. I think I should speedrun this sometime, it wouldn't be a very good speedrun, but it would be fun for me.

I did the run without dying.  Hopefully, it will be on SDA soon.  If anyone wants to see it now, it's on YouTube.com.

After watcing part 1, it is clear you are quite good at the game, but you haven't really practiced speedrunning it.  In other words, it's obvious you're prioritizing survival over speed in many instances.

Some general tips:

You should jump and knife the yellow guys instead of taking time to knife them.  Yes, they occasionally pause to shoot you instead of walking by you (I have no idea what causes this), but this is a short game, you should retry as many times as you need.

You turn to the left and kill enemies too often, you would be surprised how many you can kill simply jumping to the right and slashing left.

When you're forced to do a standing or crouching slash, press right immediately to cancel the animation.  You can also press left, but I don't know why you would want to go backwards.

Stage 1:

Using the Bazooka to take care of guys on your left was completely unnecessary.  You can simply knife those guys while jumping.

You want to save at least one shot for the last string of guys. Why?  You can hit them off-screen, saving you a second or two (since the victory screen starts after you kill the last guy).

Stage 2:

Collecting the grenade was unnecessary.  It cost you a lot of time without any benefit.

Against the "boss", you should stay on the right first.  Sometimes a jetpack guy will immediately drop down.

Stage 3:

It is possible to get past the first four enemies without losing any speed.  When you get near the first one, jump and slash him, then when you're descending slash again so you hit the red guy.  Afterwards, do another jump to get over the fourth guy (it doesn't matter whether you stab him or not IIRC).

Collecting the gun was unnecessary.  It does make you a lot safer, but speedruns aren't about safety.

You should move closer to the sides after you hit each dog. It should speed up the process a little.

I'll comment more when I see part 2 (for some reason it's streaming very slowly).

Thanks for the tips.  They will definitely decrease the time.  But should I go ahead and submit this run as it is since there isn't a run for this game on SDA right now?
Hi! I'm andrewg!
You can I guess if you'd like, but if you can improve, Why not try a few more times? It is a pretty short game isn't it?

I cant seem to watch the youtube video, I've been having some problems lately. If you didn't die, then that's pretty good, I can never seem to play this too well without any deaths.  :-/

No, you should redo your run because the time can be improved significantly.  Also, andrewg has a good point.  Rush 'n Attack is a short game.

One more general tip, when you're descending, you don't need to wait for every single enemy to pass by.  You just have to make sure there is enough space between enemies.

BTW, I watched the rest of the stages.

I don't really have much to say about stage 4 other than look at the general tips I gave you.

I only have one big comment about stage 5... DON'T MISS THE GRENADES!  They save a lot of time against the the parachuters.  How?  When you first hear the alarm, go all the way to the right.  When you see the first bullet, move slightly to the left, then repeat for the second bullet.  If you did it correctly, you should be close enough to stab the first parachuter before he can land.  Immediately after you stab the first parachuter, walk to the left for about half a second, jump (while still holding left), and immediately turn right and throw a grenade.  If you did it correctly, the two remaining parachuters will be defeated.

Stage 6:

Your strategy is similar to mine (go up to the top and stay there until it ends), except I usually go up one ladder later. Honestly, I don't think it makes much difference.  However, there is something that will make a big difference.  Once you get up to the top, keep going right.  You will either defeat or outrun every single enemy.  You might not believe me on this, but it really works (also it's good practice for slashing backwards while jumping).

There is a much faster strategy you can use against the missile (thanks go to the TAS for giving me the idea).  Go all the way to the right.  When the first yellow enemy appears, wait about half a second, then stab him.  The moment you stab him, immediately jump up and to the left.  If you did this correctly, you will collect the bazooka while you're still in the air.  Now fire the bazooka as fast as possible.  When you see the red guy appear, wait about 1/4-1/2 second, then jump towards him and slash like a maniac.  If you did this correctly, you will not only slash the red guy, but the yellow guy too (and get the bazooka instantly).  Now fire off all of your bazooka shots as fast as possible and repeat the process one more time to win the game.

BTW, I can make .fcm movies of each stage if you want (only playable with the fceu emulator though).
Hi! I'm andrewg!
mikwuyma, why dont you do a run of the game, it seems like you'd make a pretty good run.

Man, this is the second game you could do a run of but don't have a console (super C). Are we going to have to get a fund going so you can destroy some more runs, or just send you my beloved consoles myself?

I do have enough money to buy one, but I want to buy a top-loading NES.  Last time I checked ebay they cost about 80 dollars.  I could still afford it, but 80 dollars is a lot.

IIRC, for speed running purposes you want a non-top loading one, as the top loading ones only support RF and not composite.

I can't get this to work.  The bazooka missile only hits guys who are on the screen.  Where should I be when I shoot the bazooka? Should I be as far right as possible, or should I be in the center of the screen?

Also, say I significantly improve my 11:17 time but I unintentionally die once during the run.  Would this one-death run be acceptable?  Or does the run have to be a no-death run?
bläää
great time. uhm.. If you improved your deathless run to a run including one death. The run included one death is better to send. though, that prove you can finish the game even faster. If you are not very tired on the game I recommend you to improve it even more. This will rock!

Also good support from Mikwuyma here! I hope you will get a NES and pul off some runs in the future. I realise I haven´t seen the last stage, haha. Will watch the runs later for sure.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
"I do have enough money to buy one, but I want to buy a top-loading NES."

This is what i use to speedrun, and it is a pain because I have to use the RF switch... It's easier to get games to work I think though.

I think I've only beaten rush'n attack like once. It's kind of hard.

I never really noticed this, but I'm very good at sidescrollers.
Talk to the Hand
Rush N Attack is a )*&^(*&^(*&^. Level 3 is the furthest I've gotten.

I stay in the middle of the screen, and shoot when I see the first guy appear.  Usually you'll hit all five guys.

About improving your time, a one-death run is acceptable, but I would obviously prefer no deaths.

andrewg:  I want a top-loading NES because they're more reliable (though nate will probably hate me using an rf switch).

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Yeah, they are. It's still decent quality.

Do you kill every enemy while jumping? This should be a priority if you are not. So you can avoid slowing down at all.
Cigar Man
I used Mike's suggestions and just did a one-death run in 10:16.  If I hadn't died once, my time might have been under 10:00.  But 10:16 is much better than my no-death run of 11:17.

Victory!  I just did a no-death run in 9:54, which is somewhat close to the TAS time (9:37).  I think it's ready to be submitted to SDA.

I'll probably post my run on YouTube.com later today.
