Which magic do you think is the strongest? Fire or lightning?

I realized that I never thought about this carefully. I guess I just assumed fire is because enryuu is the strongest sword. Just like wind is weakest and so is the magic.
King Wabasami
hm. I really don't know.
Maybe Lightning since it hits a lot of times aside from the once.

Hm. What was your route? Soul building, Boss fight, Enemies you killed etc

I can't remember the exact soul counts, but I remember generally what I did.

4 zombies at start. Critical hits and grabbed soul.  (Did this)
Osrik soul. During the fight he dropped some blue so I got in some extra magic attacks. (did this)
After Osrik with skull clouds, got about 5 bars and upgraded to lv2 fire and lightning. Saved. (Did this)
Bull and skull clouds above rope ladder. (did this 3 soul skulls though)

Ran to second floor keep and entered lv2 fire door to get the crest early. (did this)
Then to puzzle lv2 fire door. Saved here. Did the puzzles quickly.
(Did this minus the saving. The randomly generated Floor puzzle is annoying though. Water puzzle can be done in like 16 moves)

Marcellus fight went perfectly. Did fire magic when he was open and absorbed souls and got some blue. Then dodge and hit him with fire sword when he's open. Got soul.
(did this after the fight I had Fire orb almost lvl 3 and wind orb lvl 2. if I absorbed the souls in the room from the soul container thing I probably could've gotten lvl 3 fire orb here.)

Upgraded to lv2 wind and did not save here like I usually do. Did the part with the bell and that without a problem, except just before the bell a reynaldo got me with its underground tentacle, slowed me down for a sec. (this part went pretty perfect for me)

Did Kaede part without a problem. Saved before the gold and silver plate door. (did this minus the saving)

As Samonosuke, saved before the clone. Clone fight went really well. Got in the free lightning at the start while he's standing there. Really sped up the fight. He then launched fireballs like 3 times and ate fire magic each time. Got soul. (did this free lightning does help alot)

In  the next area I'm a little hazy. I know I had enough for lv3 fire, then saved before the red bull. I used the strategy of lining them up and hitting all of them with fire magic twice, killing the yellows, then used the rest on the red. Upgraded wind to lv3.
(did this but before hand I Issen'd one of the black armor zombies and just magic killed the second. (Tried to issen but it whiffed twice >:[ after absorbing those twos souls I killed the archers and absorbed their souls.

Also, after the red bulls I level'd wind orb to 3 and got 10 fire arrows with the rest.

Issen on 2 black zombies outside. They waited around doing nothing and I missed a deflect, blocked a little too late. I almost reset then but decided to keep the red bull save file in case my overall time sucked. (issen'd them aswell I think. Don't remember.

When I ran back to the keep entrance to use the decorated sword, I know I stopped to fight yellow bulls and skulls. Issened the bulls and the skull clouds to as they tried to escape. Made a huge amount here. (did this but I only issen'd one and then issen'd the 3 soul skulls. Left the second one alone)

I issened a black zombie by the waterfall bridge. And the 2 outside the tower. Inside issened the black by the lv3 wind door.
Inside I upgraded to lv3 thunder and got about 10 fire arrows. Saved here.
(Should've issen'd a black armor zombie before entering the tower where lvl 3 wind orb is required or inside so I could've gotten lvl 3 lightning orb (was barely off)

Kaede part went perfectly. (this)

Insect boss went very well. Lv3 wind to drop her then lightning. Did this a few times and got some blue. Then soul absorber and fire arrows. It didn't take many, less than the amount I upgraded.
(this didnt have to even use fire magic. I did have to use some normal arrows though. if I gotten lvl 3 lightning orb I probably wouldn't of had to.)

After cut-scene ran back to savepoint at keep entrance and saved. Had to listen to the DR guy. Not happy about that and the backtracking.
Refilled magic. (didn't do this. Since I didn't use fire magic on insect queen I had a full bar for marcellus 2 and he gave enough for wind and lightning magic after taking his shield.)

For Marcellus I used fire when he was open and he loses his shield in two shots. Then I cornered him with enryuu stabs until he broke out, then lightning magic. Got souls. (did this)

At final savepoint I upgraded enryuu to lv2 and saved. I've already posted about Fortinbras. ( I finished upgrading lightning orb to lvl 3 here. I had enryuu at lvl 2 before going on the boat to insect queen/great bow. I had 3 bars of souls left over.)
That's about it as I remember.

Posted what I did in what I quoted.
Aside from getting hit and screwing up some issens then getting hit ;-; or whiffing issens >_> I can see this maybe going to 1:08.
Awesome. So with less small mistakes 1:08 is definitely possible. Are you going to attempt it right away?

What does that reynaldo do for you? For me it's always using that underground tentacle just as I come around the corner. I've recently found if using the wind sword you can attack just before the tentacle pops up, and since the wind sword does 2 slashes it moves you forward. I slid right past it.
Either this or stop and wait, then run. Sometimes it doesn't even use this attack.

Nice. Since the enemies don't give blue if you have full magic, I didn't think about it. Did you get full bars back? Sounds like big time saved since I only run back to refill but if I don't have to that's awesome. I'd like to be able to save here especially after getting insect boss perfect, and I'm always scared of Marcellus.
King Wabasami
He gave me full or really close to full (I got 3 magic jewels though.)
in the underground the underground tentacle attacks just missed me. Not sure how.
You guys remember how I said I would work on runs of onimusha yesterday? Well I didn't I played oni 2 all day and beat it.

Man zero If you try a run at oni 2, good luck! I printed out 18 pages for trading just so I wouldn't get confused, and I still did! Lol!

I've been reading up on what you guys are doing (good Job by the way Josh!) and I think that it is very important to get the magic in the DR-room before Fortinbras. You might wast like 40sec but I still think you save time.
You can beat Marcellus 2 by using fire magic 4 times then run up and use your lighting magic until you run out, and after that hes in the corner and you use wind while he's stuck on the back wall. then he takes like 1-2 hits with the fire sword level 2 and hes dead.

I'm not giving this thread a rest or onimusha, i'm just going to be playing all the other one's for a while until I feel like I get the Issen down.

By the way zero does holding down the square button increase your chances of doing a Issen in oni 1? Because I know it does in oni 2.
Josh will you post a SS run soon for us?
King Wabasami
I'll probably record Saturday at the latest Wednesday at the earliest.

What are you trading? I know every character has one of each jewel, and an extra one of each can only be gained from friendship with Magoichi. I see the same deal as Oni 1, avoid power and only go for magic.

But in Oni 2 you can issen and chain issen a boss, which to my mind makes magic useless in most cases. You don't need technique scrolls or any equipment really. I imagine you'd want to avoid any friendship, and Oyu is the only compulsory part I think.

Shin's run of under an hour uses the black necklace which I think results from one of the characters friendship. I won't be using it even though it's faster because it just makes the game uninteresting.

If you guys run Oni 2 what mode? There's more options: normal, hard mode, and Issen only mode. We can even do runs of the mini-games.

Might be better to make a new topic so not to confuse the info.

Not sure what you mean. Can you explain in more detail? I've never held the square button down.
King Wabasami
For Oni 2 and 3 Issen mode would definitely be the most interesting.

Oni 3 can do Hard mode + Issen mode IIRC not sure if 2 can as well.
Because of the amount of time needed to practice chain issen, I'm not sure I can be bothered with it at this point.

And it's the only way to get a good time. Issen hits bosses now, so you need to be able to consistently pull off chains.
So will you keep trying for a better time? If not I'll be giving it a rest. I don't feel finished with this game knowing a lower time is possible though. I want to try beat that Ultimate mode time too.
King Wabasami
Yea, I'll definitely keep going until I get the lowest time possible.
57 minutes on Ultimate seems really odd. Maybe because those runs haven't been updated for years, but I find it really strange that our regular mode times are close to that.

I'm guessing that while the Bishamon sword is really strong, maybe it isn't as good as magic attacks. I haven't used it in so long I can't remember any details.
King Wabasami
Bishamon's magic attack kills orsik in 3 hits.
Wow. Though I guess the soul absorbing still needs to be done, but most bosses can be finished way faster. Now that I know the damage 57 does seem accurate and it saves 11 minutes.

I wonder what plan they used, and you get unlimited soul absorbers and arrows which definitely changes a lot.
Remember your mantra.
1:09?
Damn dude.

It'll be interesting to watch a video of this one to see where any kind of hiccups might occur. Ya'll have already shaved a solid 30 minutes off of what was being achived initally - anyone think sub-hour might be within grasp?
I believe sub-hour is very possible.

About the Issen
I can't remember where I read the information, but I read some where, that if you hold down the square button when the enemies attack, it increases your chance of pulling off a Issen.
I've done them both ways now.
I do feel like when I press and hold the button I have a higher rate of Issen's.
I could be one crack though, who know's?

About the different Thread
Yeah don't worry I won't talk about the other game's to much, plus I don't wan't to take away from you and Josh's runs.
Josh!
I'm very happy to hear about you recording a run!
I'm really looking forward to it!
I just realized something; what are the odds that there are version differences between the Japanese and American versions? While I'm skeptical you're anywhere close to the game's threshold, I can say that in pretty much every Capcom action/adventure game up to vanilla Devil May Cry 3, the Japanese versions have an easier difficulty scale.
Quote:

hmm, I think lower than 1:09 is possible, 1:06/7 maybe?, but I see nowhere that a whole 8 minutes could be saved. I know all the mistakes I made and they don't add up to that much time.

Getting grabbed by a reynaldo.
Waiting to issen two black armor zombies and they wouldn't attack.
Less saves, or no saves.
I feel Kaede's boss fight could have gone faster.
Insect boss could have gone faster depending on how much I need to chase her around.
Not going back to refil magic before Marcellus 2, but only if he gives enough blue soul like Joshkaz said.
Took a few random hits here and there.

That's the improvements I can think of. I won't rule out that lower than 1:09 is possible, but look at the Ultimate mode record of 57 minutes. That much time gets saved due to using the Bishamon Sword and wiping out the bosses in no time, and that's already just below an hour.

Unless you hold the button before the issen and it makes it easier, I don't see what you achieve by holding it. I just tap it at the right time. When do you start holding it?

That's not what I meant. I'm up for discussing/planning with you, I just think we should have a separate topic rather than confusing all Oni information, especially when people might only be interested in one of the games, and the same terms are used for all the games.

Excellent question. I'm always interested in these differences and know quite a few games that are easier in the JP version.

JP Oni 1 has an easy and normal mode. PAL version just has normal I think. I've never played the US version. PAL runs slower at 50hz, but other than that I haven't noticed any change in difficulty. All the strategies we've used are working out exactly on both versions even resulting in the same time that Joshkaz and I got.

I know for a fact Fortinbras goes down in the 9 magic shots to the head in PAL/JP version. And I believe others here have tested that on their versions.

The only real difference I know of is the insect woman cut-scene was removed from the PAL version.

I won't say anything for sure as I really don't know about US version.

My run ^ A lot of dumb little mistakes.

We don't know if it was done on ultimate mode or easy or normal. It could just be a segmented run, or they just had better strategies than us.

I thought it was Ultimate mode.

名人 EXRON 0時間57分 43体 18340魂

The kill and soul count looks too low. The only reason I can see for that is if the Bishamon Sword is being used.

I'm going to watch you run soon. Looking forward to it.
