it's magicka language I guess...
btw I'm still working on this run on bugged version, I will post it here but probably not submit it...

I log onto YouTube today to see this and it reminded me of this thread. Only the first five minutes are relevant.

I don't play Magicka often and I didn't read the thread so I don't know if it's already here. Using shield + arcane in order to send the Mind Duel mages flying for an instant kill on them may be helpful when facing multiple mages.

In a relatively recent patch, the game was modified so that mines now knock you back in single player mode. This allows you to skip many parts of the game including cut scenes in addition to being a very fast way to travel. I'm pretty sure that this version is faster than the old version that skips most of chapter 3. I recently completed a segmented run of the game in 30:55. You can see it here:

This is so close to 30 minutes that I would really like to see the 30:00 mark broken. The time can be brought down just with execution improvements, but I think some new routes/strategies/tricks will be needed to accomplish this.

I think most of what I do in the run is self-explanatory, but I will explain some parts. First, when you get knock-backed, your character will face back towards the mines. This means when you teleport in the air/while lying on ground, you will teleport in that direction. That is, you will teleport backwards. However, if you hit a wall while flying, you will turn towards that wall. Thus if the direction of the wall opposes the direction of flight, this means you will be able to teleport forwards instead of backwards. About two teleports can be done on the ground, so this can increase your speed considerably when possible. However, hitting the wall at the right angle is pretty hard in many cases.

Secondly, I will explain what I think is the fastest way to kill Grimnir, mainly because I failed to execute the trick. Most bosses I kill with qsr spam. The optimal rotation for dmg is qsrqsr(rclick), assume I calculated correctly =). That is, two qsr's per click. You can freeze Grimnir quickly by doing qsrq(click)srqsr(click) at the beginning of the fight. This increases dmg from the ice shards by 50%, so it is quite useful =). Most enemies take 0 dmg from shards while frozen, so as far as I know, this is only useful on Grimnir.

Oh wow, they really broke the game this time. Since this mine knockback is so large I foresee them patching it out again soon unfortunately. Since it's pretty easy to accidently trigger such an explosive blast it will most likely damage the casual singleplayer experience since people will keep getting thrown out of the map by mistake. I guess we will once again have to wait and see what we'll have left once their patching stabilizes.

Since you are doing a segmented, you should definitely go for the aristrocrat quick kill (unless they patched it out, haven't tried it for awhile). That alone will save you 45 seconds.

As for Assatur, getting him wet and thunderbolt spamming him for 10k each seems slightly faster than your method.

Wow, that mine knockback was just.. wow.
Game = borked. This is certainly the version that should be ran.

The problem is unfortunately that we can't choose this. We'll have to wait until they stop patching (or at least stabilized enough) before we can make a run for SDA. Since steam auto updates incrementally between any two versions, there's no way for others to retrieve this exact version later on when the next patch is out.
Take your pc offline? I'm not a steam user, so I can't say, but I bet people have found some fairly legal ways to prevent patching. Or is this a thing for SDA mostly?

this was the part you missed, flamingmage
Back it up? I suppose that others have thought of this, so I'll shut up Cheesy

They did this deliberately? They must really love speedrunners.

You can disable auto-patching in Steam but yeah thats not the point.
.
Disabling autopatching doesn't help future runners of the game though. There's no way for someone who bought the game after that particular patch version to compete without doing some things illegally.

i'm not sure if SKIDROW patches work with original version but this could be a solution... i'm not going to try it thou Cheesy
Considering that the mine knockback has always been in multiplayer, I don't actually think it will be removed again from single player. Hopefully the only change in the future will be that all cutscenes will be skippable.

Also, it seems I made a bad mistake in my run. Instead of (we) mines, I should have used (qqqwe) mines. Those mines go much farther and can go over all invisible walls. Basically you can bounce from the beginning of an area to the end of an area in one set of mines, always.
For an example, see this video.

Then it seems like the only units you have to kill are the bosses, Chap.2 shaman, Chap.4 town square battle, and the Chap.5 gate battle. I found a new way to kill the aristocrats that is probably as fast as fear, in addition to getting the staff. (To be honest, I never got the fear method to work). The main thing I want to figure out before making another practice run is how to kill Death in one phase. It seems theoretically possible but I can't manage it. The following video shows my current Aristocrats and Death strats, as well as some older tricks obsoleted by mines.
Those tricks are so cool. I know they're obsolete, but they make me warm and giggly regardless.

I hope they'll settle on something soon. At least they posted that 'if you didn't preorder get this' DLC thing so we can ignore that ruling too.

Nice tricks indeed.
Yeah that aristocrat fight was about equal time as the fear trick and much much more consistent pulling off. For the fear to work, you would have to be lucky so that he's running in a direction straight into the cave opening and not switching direction for almost the entire duration. That only happens like 1/20 so good thing you found something controllable.

edit: oh yeah, from the latest update:

Life based spell mines no longer knockbacks

What shard spell do you use in your run against most of the bosses?

Might've been an oversight, we'll see what happens the next few days.
Although I'd suspect we could still find a combo where we'll survive the blast even without a heal element in it.

He's using qsr, that is water+arcane+frost to create arcane infused ice shards.
Pure Evu!
qqqwe most propably is an oversight since qwe and qqwe also have no knockbacks now. But qqqse works also quite splendid and is 100% survivable if you shield yourself before (Which is btw also faster than healing yourself afterwards). The biggest problem would be getting a landing on that teleportspell at the beginning since the knockback of qqqse is huge.

Has anyone already experimented with spamming sdr? it seems a little more powerful and faster but it also kills you sometimes =/

for the one circle death fight, have you tried to mix into the dff to activate the mines some W? like dfwww or just AoE wwwww? Also a silly idea but does revive (wa) anything to him?

Btw, the newest patch adds Crash to Desktop to the campaign. I dont think it counts as DLC so it might come in handy.
And has anyone run the arena yet? i would love to see some sub 7min attempts :3

Arrowhead has been patching alot, so I won't do another run until it dies down. Unfortunately, the mine system is so random it makes speedrunning Magicka a real hassle. The best mining techique based is to do qqqse mines and detonate them with ed. Unfortunately, this puts you in the state where you cannot cast while flying, so you can get down only with a tp staff. This basically means getting the random tp staff in Chapter 2 is required. If you do qqqse and detonate with s aoe like I did previously, only ~3 of the mines will hit you (despite symmetry). Not only that, but which mines detonate seems almost random. Another way to do mines is to lay them in a line (weapon enchant) and run over them. This takes more setup time, but you can teleport down. All in all, the new mines are so annoying =(.

Now for the good news. Chapters 10-12 have all been somewhat destroyed, especially 11 and 12. The key used here is that you can queue up casts in certain circumstances before activating a cutscene to cast the spell right at the beginning of the scene. In Chapter 11, Death is cast while flying at Fafnir, so Death will kill the boss even before the initial cutscene. In Chapter 12, you cast Corporealize while frozen, then tp staff up to the Grimnir cutscene. This allows you to skip both Vlad and Grimnir.

And then there was the Vietnam mission which is also gonna have to be speedrun.
I haven't played this game too much since I bought it. However its free this weekend and only costs $2.50 (a great deal) on steam so anybody who is interested in it should definitely check it out. Hopefully the Magicka community will grow a bit, its a great game and I would love to see a speedrun of it.
