Never give up!
Wow.

I know the game was fairly unpopular, but I was hoping for at least some confidence-boosting.  Is the idea of SSing this game just that silly?

Anyway, I had some thoughts about this game, and I actually think I'm going to do this BEFORE I do the X-Men Legends runs, because those are going to be segmented and I want to do exactly two more long single-segment runs (this, plus a game I've done a segmented run of before) before I expect to lose the time to really work on them.  I'll still spend time on Golden Axe 3 intermittently, since that game's easier to find time to attempt.

Since it's been a while since I've played the game, I'm spending time familiarizing myself with required triggers for advancement and the timing for skipping cutscenes (personal notes, you must understand - I plan on putting the notes into an easy-to-follow format and printing them when I'm done with this, so I have a tactical reference during the run).  I'm also seeing if I can find any suspected tactical improvements over darkwasabi's run, because I am incredibly skeptical of this statement in his commentary:
Quote:
...because going flawless all the way up to the final save would probably not even save a minute...

My theory is that at minimum, two minutes of savings can be found.  And because I seriously doubt I'll beat the segmented run's time, if anyone's willing to try it, these can be applied to a new segmented run.  I don't know where I'll find it, I just suspect I'll find it as I test possibilities.

Here's what I've noted so far:

Chapter 1:

Triggers and Skip Points:
-First airship sequence: Talk to Brother, then go inside the Cabin area.
-Gagazet, cutscene before Leblanc fight: Can't skip this until Leblanc shows up.
-Gagazet, final scenes: Fast-forwarding the text here doesn't seem to affect the time at all.
-Celsius, after getting Black Mage: Can't skip it until Buddy says the word "Gullwings".

Tactical changes (pluses mean possible improvements, minuses mean I'll undoubtedly be slower here, question marks mean investigation is underway, equals means nothing changes, asterisk means merely a strat change):
+Gagazet, Leblanc fight: Forget about going all-out on Ormi and Logos early on - go after Leblanc first.  The idea here is that Ormi and Logos only have a chance (and apparently a slim one) of wasting time with their moves - Leblanc almost always wastes time with moves like Sonic Fan and Love Tap.  After this, I'd say go after Ormi (the more dangerous of the two lackeys at this stage) second, and save Logos for last.  I'm positive a good 20-30 seconds can be shaved on this fight just with this tactic change, and I suspect even more savings here is realistic.
-Gagazet, 'race to the top' sequence: Extra encounters won't be necessary - I can run from them (or fight them if I can win faster than I can run away, which might happen).  But I'll be snagging the Elixir and Yellow Ring here to make sure I can afford an extra accessory in Calm Lands.
=Gagazet, Boris fight: Sticking with three Warriors for this fight.  Critical hits are the only way I'll be faster than darkwasabi - the fight's sped up by a few seconds if I get just one - and I can't count on those happening.
?Celsius, post-Gagazet: I may take a trip to the Engine Room if I find that letting Yuna switch between an Amulet and a Wristband as necessary makes certain parts go faster, because Remedies sell for enough money to finance that.  I'd drop this before I dropped the Elixir if I find this isn't helpful enough, as I think this is slower than that.
?Calm Lands: Charm Bangle, two Amulets, and two Wristbands for sure.  If I determine Yuna could use more Magic before Paine gets the Gold Hairpin, I'll buy one more Amulet.
*Class change before Besaid: I've decided on my setup for this part.  Yuna and Paine as Black Mages, Rikku as a Thief.  Why Thief instead of Warrior?  This is the first fight where needing to heal is a very realistic possibility in an SS, and Thief is faster than Warrior for impromptu strategy changes.
-Besaid: I will need to check some of the ciphers, because I can't simply memorize the password ahead of time.  However, I will only check the ciphers for the first, third, and fourth parts of the code.  I believe it is faster to brute-force the second number, even if you use all ten possibilities, than to run over and find it out for sure.

More to follow as I do my refamiliarizing.  You also bet I'm going to work on my combo hit timing as I do this - it's decent but I feel it still needs a bit more work.

I have theories for some possible improvements but I think I'll test those some more before presenting them.  It mostly has to do with different classes and some different purchases, and I'm not entirely sure it'll all pan out the way I want it to.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I didn't see this intill just now you have my surport for the run i hope you do good man
/support.

But thats all I can do I am afraid.  Good luck and that.

If you need help, let me know. I've started to play this game again and am thinking of a single segment myself, mainly NG+. First need to beat it on 100% normally though.

Most of the time.  For now, such is all I can do SDA relevant save very rare situations.  Once my, LEGIT, Bounty stuff finally gets situated though---that'll be another matter entirely perhaps.

Plus I really do enjoy watching skillful speedruns---great times.  8)

Never give up!
Not having time to play the game over the past couple of delays necessitated some delay in response here.

Anyway, the way I'm going to practice this is do whole areas in one shot, saving after each.  (I'm holding down a save right before Gagazet right now.)  Then when that's done, run whole chapters and save after each.  I don't start the true single-segment attempt until I clear the 'whole chapters' part without trouble.  This ought to get me used to the strategies necessary.

Ironically, one of the areas I have trouble with is right in the beginning - dodging the goons between the initial fight and when you get the real Yuna.  The second wave of goons (the one that has Fem-Goons - I do NOT count the pair of Goons you MUST fight in my numbering here) is the bigger problem - my understanding is that the positioning has to be perfect to pull off that dodge.  (The first wave can be evaded just by going fast enough on that screen.)

While hitting both fights costs roughly a minute, I think I'll only worry about restarting in that part if I somehow botch the Logos/Ormi fight or the Leblanc fight.  One reason is the large downtime between a failed attempt and when the action starts in the next attempt.  (There's only so many times one can bear to watch the music video that is the opening cutscene.)  The other?  This is a single-segment run projected to be four and a half hours minimum, and my sanity is limited enough as it is.  Consider the chances of getting all the stuff before the Calm Lands visit perfectly - I won't get anywhere with this at all if I worry over the beginning.  There are more important parts to get right (for instance, making sure all characters get the most experience from the fights in the first two chapters, meaning revive characters before the end of combat and not after combat).

Edit: Some more notes have been made, check the second post for details.

Uhh, curious what you mean by that? The only time Cat Nip got nerfed was International + Last Mission version.

You get Cat Nip really early in the Japanese version.  I believe as early Chapter 2, but not sure on that.

Edit: Yeah.  From Gamefaqs, FFX-2 Accessory FAQ by tercess17

The Japanese version can get it somewhere in Chapter 2 (I believe it's the Tobli sequence, where you have to push some guys onto the elevator).  The North American version can't get it without going a little less than halfway through a late-game dungeon - a dungeon that is way too long to bother with in a speedrun.

Also, I'm doing this run from a first playthrough, meaning no stuff from a previous play.  Someone playing the North American version and doing a New Game + run could easily abuse the Cat Nip (Cat Nip + Gunner = maniacal boss-killer).

Alright.

More notes have been posted above about Chapter 1, but I'm going to bring up that set here to see if anyone has differing opinions.

For the last fight in the Chapter 1 visit to Gagazet I stick with three Warriors like darkwasabi had.  Only way I can be faster than him is if I get a critical hit somewhere.

In Calm Lands I'm buying at least two extra accessories, maybe three.  In addition to the Charm Bangle and two Amulets, I buy two Wristbands, and possibly one more Amulet depending on whether Yuna needs more Magic before I can free up one of Paine's amulets.

For Besaid, I sadly can't memorize the password ahead of time.  Instead, what I plan to do is find the first, third, and fourth parts of the code and brute-force the second one.  Because the second part is so far out of the way, I believe brute-forcing the second number of the code will be faster, even if I use all ten possibilities, than going and finding out for sure what it is.

For the Flame Dragon, my proposed party change is to have Yuna as a Black Mage and Rikku as a Thief.  Paine stays a Black Mage.  Rikku plays a support role and both Yuna and Paine simply cast Blizzard all day.  I'm not sure it's actually faster, but in my opinion this is safer than relying on one Black Mage.
Never give up!
Hm.

Well, looks like I'm on my own for strategy-hunting.  Oh well.  I'll put any further ideas into these new posts before moving them up.

Anyway, on to Zanarkand.  Rikku switches to Warrior for this one right off the bat.  Yuna and Paine both stay Black Mages.  I make sure to get Focus and MP Absorb in the forced battles.

I also ought to grab the Elixir and Ether in the room with treasure chests at least.

I've debated calling Isaaru out instead of giving a wrong answer.  If I do that, then I will have Rikku equip the Heart Reborn grid (putting Warrior, Gunner, and White Mage on it for now) just for the sake of having someone be able to heal.  My next chance to put a longtime healer in the party isn't until Chapter 2, but the reason this is a 'maybe' is because I have an awful lot of Potions and decent number of Phoenix Downs available to me at this time.

darkwasabi's strategy against this boss is using two Warriors and one Black Mage, layering on Power Break, and perfecting his timing for combos.  Since this guy has some resistance to Power Break (darkwasabi managed a very minimal number of those, and I just can't afford to wait very long to start my damage-dealing), I plan on using two Black Mages and one Warrior instead, and having the Warrior run healing duty, only occasionally doing a Power Break.  (I dare not risk a White Mage with a boss that hits this hard.)

Awaiting SOME sort of input from people who've played the game.

I'm a little surprised this isn't get much attention. I think getting this game done in 4~5 hours straight without saving game would be an amazing feat. I personally think it would be too hard, like you might get screwed over from fatal mistake like gameover from final bosses. If you still wanna do it, go for it.

Sorry I have no tips / tricks for single segment run. I haven't play FFX-2 for a long time.

Hello, I've been quietly working on FFX-2. I've been fooling around with Easycap DC60 usb recording device, then compare with darkwasabi's run, I saw some places I was wondering "what if I do this, will it be faster?" - mostly for battle part. It's already about 4 minutes faster at end of segment #6, I'm confidence that I can get it under 4 hour at final time (at "The End" part). So I'm turning it from playaround to real project.

For now - darkwasabi's route looks pretty solid, I'm just pretty much following it, but tweaking battle strategy a bit better. So um, if anyone got better route or better battle strategy, I'd like to hear it, even if it's within first 6 segment, I would gladly redo them.
Null
Just finished segment #7, it was huge headache, but 5 minutes faster in total atm. No interest in this run eh?
I survived MIKE-Fest 1
Oh I'm interested in it but I don't have anything useful to contribute .... wait maybe this:

GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR RUN  Grin
Now a hit show on the CW
Yeah, I'm definitely interested in seeing it, and I'm sure plenty of other people are. I don't have any advice to offer, but if you posted your segments on youtube, maybe people who know more about the game could give suggestions.

I just realized something, I may have to redo whole run on ps2 or abandon it. I was doing this on PS3 (because ps3 and hdtv is right next to PC, ps2 is in other room). PS3 is causing ps2 game looking darker, below is example:

PS2 picture

ps2 - from darkwasabi's run

PS3 picture

ps3 - on my run

I wonder what should I do..
Fucking Weeaboo
I wouldn't worry about it.  If this was something like Fatal Frame, then I would start over, since that game is naturally very dark.  This game...it's not that big of a difference.  Plus the luminance factor in a video can be adjusted when encoding, if you know what you're doing.
Null
Hey you're right, I could solve it by adding brightness/contract filter (5% brightness, 125% cont seem to fix it closest to original), but Anri-chan doesn't have this feature, right? Look like I would have to find out what did anri do to video (codec, setting, etc)
Fucking Weeaboo
Or you can just give it to nate and let him deal with it. Tongue

I haven't done any speedrun for days, it's driving me crazy on encode/video playback part.

I mean I examine my raw videos, suddenly I noticed VLC playing my raw segment appear like normal ps2 brightness, not darker anymore - I tried to take snapshot, they appeared DARK in snapshot (wtf?).. so I went check with VLC's setting, brightness/contract stuff like that are not enabled in VLC (what gives???)

Plus I noticed some of video seem like already deinterlaced (in specific area) then other video interlaced, then other didn't, etc.. - I didn't use ANY filter during capture, I promise...

I want to know whats wrong with my raw, or vdub, or vlc before I continue.
use Dscaler; it will change your life
Null
what about DScaler? DScaler shows same thing as VLC or WMP... as far as I can see, DScaler has nothing to do with any of problems I'm having, please elaborate.

I might call it quit, I might upload segment 1-9 (of course split into parts if longer than 11 minutes) to youtube if anyone interested.
