I found the list in Patbuns17's Character Lists FAQ on Game FAQs.  I'll just paste the important parts here for quick reference.

So, to answer my initial question, the battle sequence for the PNEOP after a game reset is Zombull/Troll, Giant, Zombull/Troll, Frost Wolf, Giant, etc.  The only time my advice would likely be practical is if you hit the PNEOP in the third battle of the sequence, so you could follow a Zombull/Troll fight with a Frost Wolf fight.

Again, I haven't looked at the G/EXP numbers for that fight, but I still think it's a possibility, and I don't understand your concerns about FIR2 spells when ideally you would only be using one per fight in a battle with either Zombulls or Frost Wolves.

After seeing how well this table turned out here, I decided to paste the rest of the relevant tables, but the last two tables didn't turn out quite as well.  I might go through and fix them later; however, they are still readable as they are.

This is very interesting and might have some use in this run.  I actually did use this same sort of premise when I was originally planning my run.  For example, when I am fighting the Kyzokus in the first few segments, I realized that if I turned the power off at the end of each segment, the first fight would always contain Kyzokus.  However, if I just hit reset, it would not always be Kyzokus and would continue with the cycle until it was set to encounter them again.

The same sort of thing applies to the Zombull/Troll combo in the PoP bits.  If I turn the power off, I will always get a Zombull fight in the first round because they are "group 1" which makes manipulating them much easier (getting only one in the beginning or getting 4 in the later parts).

But to answer your question, the reason I fight 4 Zombulls instead of a pack of Frost Wolves is because the Zombulls REATLY reduce the number of trips I need to take to the inn because tents and cabins do not restore the Fire 2 to my Red Mage.  The way it works is that the Red Mage gets 1 "Level 3" spell when he reaches level 6.  The first segments of the game are calculated so perfectly that defeating Astos gives me exactly enough experience to reach level 6 for my group.  At this point, I go to the PoP and use Fire 2 on the 1st set of Zombulls.  I then use a house and a tent to save it and get my Fire 2 back.  After defeating the 2nd set of Zombulls, my group gains just enough XP to get to level 7 at which point my Red Mage has 2 "Level 3" spells.  After returning to the inn to get the spells back, I then return to the PoP to fight a 3rd and then a 4th set of Zombulls using Fire 2 only once on each of them.  All together, I fight 4 sets of 4 Zombulls and get to level 8 with enough gold to buy the silver swords, iron armor, Fast, and the heals and pures I will need to defeat Lich and make it through the God-forsaken Ice Cave as quickly as I can.  With any less XP, I don't reach level 8 and with any less gold, I can't buy the equipment and items necessary to make the next part of the game reasonable.

The problem, then, is that fighting the Frost Wolves, does not give me the Gold and XP I need quickly enough.  They only give half the XP and a third of the Gold per fight that the Zombulls do.  So basically, I would need to fight more battles, and therefore take more trips to the inn to recharge my Fire 2's every two fights!  Each trip back to the inn from the PoP costs about 1 minute and 30 seconds which is far more than the time I might save by fighting the wolves... not to mention that I would need to fight 2-3 packs of Wolves for every set of Zombulls.

So in essence for a similar amount of Gold and XP:

Zombulls-4 total fights (1min 30sec each) using 1 house and 1 trip to the inn (1min 30sec each)... total time is about 8 minutes.  16800XP = Level 8 and 16800 Gold.

Frost Wolves-10 total fights (40-45sec each) using 1 house and 4 trips to the inn (1min 30sec each)... total time is about 13 minutes.  28140XP = Level 9 and 14000 Gold

Even if I only fought 6 packs of wolves which would get me the same amount of XP and would also take about 8 minutes, I would be so short on Gold that I wouldn't be able to buy Fast (which means an additional trip to Elftown late in the game) and the next several segments would be slower because I would have to cut back on equipment and items I get as well like iron armor and silver swords.

Throughout the game, I look at the most cost effective ways of leveling using XP and Gold received as a function of time in each of the 3 sections where I found power-leveling to be essential.  I came up with Zombulls and the EYE to be the best answers to this problem.

The only issue I had with your reasoning was that you only cited Fire 2 limitations as the reason why you couldn't fight Frost Wolves, which doesn't make sense considering either battle only takes one Fire 2 spell.  The fact that the Zombulls give much more Gold and EXP completely justifies this part of your route.
Gotcha.  I'm just trying to get the XP and Gold I need in as few fights as possible.  The same sort of reasoning works later with the leveling segment with the EYE.  It is easy to kill so long as you are protected with Pro-Rings and it gives tons of XP and Gold very quickly.  Plus, you can run into them every step so each fight does not require it's own segment.

On a side note, I picked up the game again the other day and realized that I had left off right before the Zombull bit on the PoP.  I checked my status and realized that I had 4011 gold so buying a silver sword to fight them is simply perfect and could easily cut 10-15 seconds off each fight!  Swett.  Also, have you (or anyone else) gotten a chance to look at the rest of the run for other suggestions?  I'm mostly just trying to find a way to push through the last few caves even faster (using Warp or other means) and I'm still a little up in the air about the Tail/Bahamut bit but I think Warp alone almost makes it worthwhile.

I will be looking at the rest of the route tonight hopefully.  Also feel free to come back with any issues you are having during playthroughs.  I'm looking forward to updates.
Quick update with a little more good news:

I've been working on another test run over the last few days and all of the improvements that we've talked about so far have saved a good three minutes so far in various segments.  The other good news is that I must have mistimed segment 19 because this time through, it only took 5.5-6 minutes rather than 8.  So all together, I'm about 5 minutes ahead of my last run through as of the start of segment 20 (beginning of the Earth Cave).  I never thought that I could optimize this part of the game more than I had already so thanks to everyone who has contributed.

I'm hoping to buy some good quality VHS tapes and try recording a little bit so see if the quality is good enough.  Does the quality/size of the TV make a difference on VHS (because my TV is kinda crappy)?

Also, I think I forgot to pose a question in my earlier posts about timing.  I remember reading that SDA begins timing when you gain control of the character, but what about the end of the segment?  I've been timing it based on when the game posts the message "Now Saving..." after a tent or inn visit because at that point the data is saved and it's safe to turn off the NES (as opposed to when I actually turn the power off).  I don't really care, but I just wanted to know for my own sake.

Sweet, finding out you mistimed too long is like finding $20 in your pocket. Tongue

Your TV makes absolutely no difference when it comes to recording quality. It's just what you as a person see. In fact, you could do things like turn your brightness up all the way and nobody could tell because it's the VCR that is doing the recording.

The only thing you should keep in mind for quality is to record with your VCR in SP mode. This makes the tapes last about 2 hours, which is fine especially because you're segmenting. The tradeoff is video quality vs tape length.

What you said is correct about timing, in where the start and stop points of segments would be. BUT, it's a moot point anyway due to your game. If a game has a working, visible timer (like FF1 and most RPGs), then the way it's timed is: the last occurrence that the timer is visible + manual timing until the end of the run. In this case, that would be the final hit on Chaos.

Good luck!
Nice, thanks Enhasa.  I've already admitted to being a technical noob, but that VCR stuff makes sense.  I double checked today and I'm pretty sure I can figure out the SP mode... and since VHS tapes are so cheap, I don't really have a problem if I go though 10 or 20 or them.  The advantage for me is that most of my segments are reset in a matter of seconds when I don't get an ideal fight so as long as I don't mess up and play for two hours without switching tapes or rewinding, I should be fine.

Actually, I don't think FF1 has a reliable in game timer which is why I asked about the timing of the segments.  In the startup screen, you are asked to Continue or begin a New Game and there is no indication of the current time of the saved game.  Also, even in the ingame menu, I don't believe the game displays the time anywhere that I could see.  Most other Final Fantasy games do, but I guess this one is the exception.  I'm pretty sure the PS1 remake does display time, but because I'm running on the NES version, all the segments will have to be manually timed.

God, you're right, I'm such a moron. Sad I haven't even played the PS1 remake either, so I have no excuse.

I guess they had no space left since they really needed to have the 4 orbs indicator at all times. :-/

Oh man, I haven't looked at this game in a while.

If you're going to segment the early game anyway, there's a lot of things you can be doing that invoke true speed.

4 Rapiers, 4 Chains, kill Garland, kill PIRATEs, sail to Coneria, save/poweroff.  When you resume, hit the ship, first encounter is always KYZOKU.  Kill them, go to Dwarf Cave, directly north of the stairs is two chests (575 and 480).  Go back to inn, save/poweroff.  Sail to Pravoka (you get another KYZOKU encounter here), get 4 Short Swords.  Now either hit POP or do more save/poweroff KYZOKU from Coneria (saves steps) until you're ready.

This allows you to essentially skip the early game, not waste any money (and time, and nerves) on TENTs, and be really fast.  It's about a million less steps too.

I'll post more as you get along.  Glad someone is working on this game again.

Please read the thread if you're going to contribute.
Sorry I've been slow with updates everyone.  I've been working on my final test run before I begin recording for real.  As of the beginning of the Ice Cave, I'm almost 7 minutes ahead of my original predicted time.  With a little more luck, perseverence, and maybe another breakthrough, I'm almost certain we can bring this run to under three hours which is pretty amazing for a game I first thought would take no less than 10.

GG, please read my route as posted on page 1 of this thread.  I do begin powerleveling at the PoP at level 3 with the short swords, but as it turns out, the dwarf cave is a waste of time that early in the game.  5 Kyzokus give you some much needed experience at that point as well as some big money.  I can't imagine it being worth it to travel all the way to the dwarf cave with all those encounters just to save two fights which only take 1:30 each (and lose out on the XP).

However, I'm glad to see the continuous support of my run.  It is still my goal to be done by the end of the summer and add FF1 to the ever-growing list of old school RPGs.

FF2 and 3 didn't have an in-game timer, either.  4 was the first one.

3FT and a RM should be the best group to use in the NES one, yeah.

Reading your route out, I can see why what I did wouldn't be helpful, they're quite different.

As I learned from a different run, what may be obvious knowledge to one may not be to another, so just in case you don't know, you can land the airship on top of the oasis when you buy the bottle.  Also, there are no fights on the top floor of the Undersea Shrine.

Are you getting the Dragon Sword at the Dwarf Cave? I didn't see it mentioned, but I'd imagine since you are buying 3 Silver Swords that you may pick up the Dragon Sword for your Red Mage?

Good luck with your run!
I love that someone is finally doning this. I have played this game forever but I have never tried anything like this. And I have been waiting for a FF1 speed run for a long time. Best of luck to you and please oh please keep us all posted on your progress. Even if your in a horrible slump I'll do my best to keep the spirits high Smiley

BTW I think speed runs for other parties should be made too. How fast coul you beat 4 black mages?  That would take some intense plannig I think. If everyone thinks its crap then maybe I'll do it. But then again I have a full college schedule with adv chem, adv bio, statistics math and physics Sad
the Watching Shadow
The beginning of 4 bm would be rather boring I suppose but if you manage to get enough money for all your spells and can manipulate your luck to get the spells off you need...yay for pwnage :P.

How's the run coming Warmech?
zzzzzzzzzz
I highly doubt there's a place on this site for runs using different parties, but feel free to make one for your own entertainment.  I'm going to look at the rest of the route now and see if I can come up with anything else that might be helpful.

1.  The Silver Armor would probably be good for your Red Mage.

2.  Likewise, and I believe I said this before, you should experiment with giving your Red Mage a Silver Sword or whatever is most convenient.  He's not a bad fighter.

3.  Clearly if you are short on gold at all in this area, those two chests in the Dwarf Cave are the first place to look.

4.  I think a good goal in the Earth Cave might be to avoid all Wizard fights if possible (since they can't be run from).  This would require knowing the encounter order fairly well for each trip.  On the third floor, we are trying to avoid 1CA, which is encounter #3 on the list.  It looks like battle #9 (and a few before it) and battle #33 will give you a Wizard battle, with none in between.  My thought is that if you are not consistently getting 9 battles in before you get to the third floor, you should make your last save point further from the Earth Cave, perhaps at Melmond, but maybe somewhere in between.

5.  On the second trip through the Earth Cave, Wizards are again the battle to avoid on the third floor.  They are also the only battle to avoid on the fourth floor, where they switch to a different encounter number.  On the final floor, you'd obviously want to avoid the battles with Earths.  Getting around all of these battles might be tricky but may be possible.  Let's take a closer look at the encounter list.

As in the first trip to the Earth Cave, you want to navigate through the third floor sometime between your 9th and 33rd encounters.  However, on the fourth floor the Wizard battle changes to battle #1.  The best spot in the encounter list for avoiding battle #1 looks like between the 16th and 25th encounters.  Once you get to the fifth floor, you'll want to avoid the Earth fights, which are fight #8 on that floor.  However, you won't reach fight #8 until the 129th encounter, so that's not really a concern.

In conclusion, on your second trip through the Earth Cave, you'll want to make sure that you've had at least 9 encounters before reaching the third floor and at least 16 encounters before reaching the fourth floor, but don't exceed 24 encounters before reaching the fifth floor.  I'm not sure about the exact pacing of the encounters, but I'm thinking a good bet will be saving either immediately after leaving the Earth Cave the first time or right after getting the Rod from Sarda.  Waiting until right before the second Earth Cave trip to save will probably leave you too early in the encounter list when you get to the third and fourth floors.

6.  I likely agree about skipping the Titan's Cave treasure, along with probably all of the stuff in the Earth Cave.  There's not much of interest there beyond gold.

7.  You probably want to keep all of your armor accessories for the trips through the Castle of Ordeals and Ice Cave, as those are not going to be pleasant.

8.  I'm considering looking through the Castle of Ordeals encounter list in a similar fashion to the Earth Cave above.  Zombulls can't be run from, but you'll probably have to fight some of them anyway, and most of the battles on that floor might give you some difficulty in running.  And I think we all know how frustrating Sorcerers can be; that might be who I'd want to avoid.  I think I'll wait for a response for you here before continuing to look at the route.

9.  One last thing that I think I should mention.  When you are outside and need to heal, always heal with a Tent over a Heal Potion, unless you need to heal only one warrior.  They renew the same amount of HP as a Tent for all warriors for only slightly more than the cost of a Heal Potion.  Of course later in the game if money is no object, you should only use Cabins or even Houses.
I'm only a few segments from finishing up my last test run before I begin recording!  A trip to Wal-Mart or the like should give me the VHS tapes I need if I decide that I can't afford a DVD recorder (probably the case).

Red_Scarlet - Yes, I did know about the glitch in the Oasis to get the bottle.  That was the one useful bit about the TAS from what I could see.  And even though there are no fights on that floor in the Undersea Shrine, I found that it wasn't worth the time to get the opal shield that's on that floor; I only get the SLAB and the other opal stuff that aren't as out of the way.  The Dragon Sword is key to this route too not as a weapon but as a great gold source for when I need all those Pro-Rings.  I give my Red Mage a Silver Sword when I pick up the Flame Sword in the Ice Cave.

PapaPondy and Ranti84 - Although I don't think we can make a separate category for each group, it would be interesting to see some creative solutions if possible.  They say that 4 white mages is the hardest group overall but I think 4 of any one type other than fighters and red mages could be tricky!

Snorlax - Thanks again for the info.

1. Yes, I give the Red Mage the silver armor to get me through the Castle of Ordeals and the Ice Cave.  After that though, I have to sell it to get enough money for the Pro-Rings but I am at an easy part of the game until I can get the Opal Bracelet for him in the Sea Shrine.

2. Like I was telling Red Scarlet, I give him a silver sword when I get the flame sword.  As it turns out, he doesn't do (m)any physical attacks until that point because of all the Fire 2's he uses against Lich and the Zombie Dragons.

3. The Dwarf Cave would be much better for a single segment run than for one like this becuase it is too far out of my way in the beginning of the game.  I'm actually OK on gold with my current route.

4-5. It's funny you should mention those wizards now because that was a problem I was examining in my most recent run.  Rather than fighting extra fights to get in the right part of the cycle, I reset the game after each failed segment without turning the power off.  If I turn the power off, it resets the cycle completely (which is sometimes useful) but if I reset only, it keeps the same part of the cycle that I was at when I reset.  I try to use this to avoid wizards as much as possible.  If I'm in the middle of an awesome segment and only encounter two of them, I might risk it if I can kill them very quickly and make up for the time in the rest of the segment.  I can create a sort of unrecorded"dummy segment" to get myself in the right spot of the cycle, reset it, then ACTUALLY play through the segment even faster!  I use this strategy in other parts of the run including the Castle of Ordeals, the Ice Cave, and the final Castle when a couple of "unrunnable" can ruin a segment.

6-7.  Yup!  In my very first runs, I picked up a lot of those treasures in the Earth and Titan caves but soon found that I could save a minute or two by just selling the silver armor along with all the supplies that aren't out of my way when I get to Gaia.  I do keep everything that I can until that point and give them to my Red Mage and lead Fighter to try to minimize as much damage as I can.  Ordeals and the Ice Cave are probably the two hardest segments other than maybe the very last one.  I need all the armor I can not to mention a lot of luck!

8.  In my most recent run through, I did indeed use the same kind of manipulation to try to save myself in Ordeals.  Zombulls are a pain, but I really can take it on the chin from the ManCats which use Fire 2, Medusa with Glance, and basically everything else.

9.  Good point.  I can think of a few places where I may need an extra tent or two or a couple of cabins to keep me up and running a little longer.  This is much faster than using all those heals but in the middle of a cave, I have no choice.

Thanks again everyone!  I'll keep you updated when I finish this test and start recording the next one.

One thing I will really really recommend is getting a DVD recorder. When you calculate the cost of shipping all those VHS tapes, the shittiness of VHS, Buying new tapes it will probably be around $25. For another $75-$100 you can get a dvd recorder, not have to worry about mailing things (you can use a computer to upload and send over the internet), plus they are very useful anyways (I.e. you can burn all kinds of old VHS you might have, DVD's that you don't want to get messed up, plus programs that you might want to record). Please please think about it, you don't want your run to be forever marred just because it used shitty VHS.
I'd like to find a DVD recorder that doesn't lag behind half a second. What would you recommend, Stanski? Otherwise, I just reuse VHS tapes and re-record them to DVD since it's a LOT easier than recording with a capture card.

I can't stand any lag at all (when you have stuff that has 1-3 frames of accuracy in sonic, you can't have any lag at all or else you will have no chance)., so I just use a splitter (i.e. my VCR has composite input and composite/RF output, so I output RF to T.V. and composite to DVD recorder).

Most VCR's have this. If you want to record in S-video though, you have to actually buy a powered splitter (which is like $20 unfortunately). Unless your s-video cable also includes composite output, in which case output composite to T.V. and s-video to dvd recorder.
moolah is no objection. Anything I can do to improve the quality of my runs =D
I dunno, the thought of using dummy segments to manipulate cycles sounds kind of sketchy. I'd personally run it by someone to check and see if it is OK first, but that's just my opinion.
