Welp, I'm gona continue my casual play though. I think I'm about halfway through beating the game and it's taken me about 2 hours so far. I could be completely off on that though. Since I am playing casually my digimon might die and then it would take me quite a bit more time to beat the game.

Anyway, stop by if you wana watch, hopefully my comentary is good. ^_^ http://twitch.tv/zylo003/new

EDIT: I've got a sweet new over-lay for the stream, let me know what you think of it too please. Smiley
Hey, im new to SDA, and begun speed running litteraly like 2 days ago. I have always liked this game and would like to contribute how ever i can on the route and get a few full runs done my self to see how well i go. I´ll post if i find anything useful for the run. I wish i could stream the game and stuff but with my crap internet that seems imposible at the moment.
Yeah, once I'm done with my casual play through I'll be working on a route and making runs. I've been a little busy lately with schoolwork but I'm doing some playing tonight actually. I hope to finish my casual play through already so I can start on runs lol.
Speed is all that matters.
So, to revive this dusty thread I thought I'd share this with you guys.

I'm surprised no one ever mentioned this in here.
It's a pretty cool run, easy to pick up, learn, and pretty short as well.
However, it requires you to open the disk tray mid run. So if you're bothered by a category that is not "SDA-conform" this is probably nothing for you.
I'd appreciate some explanations of what's going on in that run.

My guess is that he somehow activates the debug mode present in the japanese version. Wouldn't that be considered cheating?

By opening the disk tray at the right time, the game gets confused and turns on debug mode. It's skill/timing based, doesn't rely on a password, hardware modifications or software modifications and anyone can do it. It's obviously a separate category to runs that do not open the disk tray, though.

The run itself is legit, it doesn't use any cheating device or anything similar.

What he does is opening the disk tray at three different times in the run.

In the beginning he uses it to cancel opening mode. This basically makes him stay in debug mode which you seem to initially be in whenever you load up a new game file.

The second time, he opens the disk tray after transitioning from using the Auto-pilot back to the city. This is used to not get forced into Opening mode. The reason opening mode would start is because the game will always try and put you into opening mode if you get too close to the area where you spawn in the beginning of the game. It happens until you ACTUALLY get into opening mode OR recruit Agumon. He cancels everything (in a different way, though).

Then the last time he opens the disk tray is when he goes from the top area of the city to the bottom area of the city. This is used to store the previous map in the memory and pretty much overlay it with the new one. That results in warping to Mt. Infinity.

I think the rest is pretty self explanatory.

Edit:

To clarify this. This is NOT Japanese exclusive. It works on all versions including PAL.
Speed is all that matters.
So, since the Japanese RTA of this route was actually pretty sloppy I went ahead and improved it by a bit.

Figured I'd share that video as well since it actually uses quite a few improvement such as Bakemon over Garurumon, better movement in Mt. Infinity, etc.

I also got the instant Centarumon recruitment glitch in that run. However, as of now it's unknown to me how and why it occurs.

I'm not sure how much interest there really is for this route but I guess sharing doesn't hurt. (I quite enjoy this route, though)
Speed is all that matters.
Okay, last update for now I guess. (Unless I find more skips out of a sudden)

Pretty much right after I finished the 13:34 run I found a way to skip both, Devimon and Metal Greymon, bringing down the final time by roughly 2 more minutes.

On a different note. I wonder what happened to all the people that initially attempted to run this game? O:
Lord Of The Beards
This game is kind of stupid to run without that trick, a lot of things can go wrong and can cause you to lose so much time for no reason sometimes (Digimon AI so good).  That is probably why people ended up dropping this game.  I also think the route for this game is not quite hammered out yet still a lot of things that could be tested it really is a huge project to take on for someone who does not have the time.  Then there is also the possibility that they still work on it and just don't post in the forums.
I'm still around. I've got a working PS1 recently so I may start running this game again. Although I don't have a proper TV now :/
Should I be able to play this with a capture card, or will it lag too much?

About the new route, I don't like it. It feels kind of wrong to open the tray disc.
Speed is all that matters.
I'd say it depends on the capture card.

I always play off of my monitor via capture card unless I play something I can't capture, and for me lag is pretty much nonexistent.

About the disk-tray glitch,
I guess you could argue about it. Technically you don't do anything wrong, you just use any possibility to finish the game as fast as possible (except for cheating, obviously). Though, I see where you're getting at. It's probably just personal preference.
I read somewhere that stuff like opening the disk tray is not allowed (something about a zelda game and turning the cartridge or something), either way it's some gay shit.
"Game modification: Removing or altering a game's internal files or hardware is forbidden. This rule includes things like software mods or using the crooked cartridge trick in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. "
Games like this and Forbidden Memories are just too much to deal with without modifiying the hardware sometimes(memory card copying / disc tray manipulation barely seem comparable to crooked cartridge imo), so having these alternative categories is nice.  And they're most likely mainly banned just because it makes the verification process too difficult, anyway it's not like your run HAS to be on SDA for it to be worth doing. If it's fun then do it lol. Also using the slang gay in a derogatory sense is some "gay shit"

I wouldn't put this and Yu-gi-oh Forbidden Memories into the same group. This game isn't all too bad if you do the no major skips route.

However, I gotta agree with the rest of what you said. I also couldn't care less if my run was on SDA or not. I don't even wanna go through all the trouble of verification, especially not since it will take an endless amount of months for runs to be posted.

Pity on you.
I wasn't trying to draw a direct comparison, although both are heavily relient on RNG.  One could actually produce a submittable DMW1 run though, it would just require a lot skill/planning and even more RNG

Thread Bump

Just bought a copy for $30 and I would like to get my money's worth. Is our current glitchless known best that Japanese 1:59ish?

Also, props and support to all the runners

1:57 I think is the best time last time I checked. There is a lot less RNG in this game than people think and it is all able to be manipulated... It is just HARD. Very hard.

The reason a run of this game hasn't been completed is because not even the best times we have seen are perfect, it'll just take far too long to have the mechanical skill at this game to get closer to the TAS time. Which is around 1:30-40 iirc.

EDIT: 1:53:40 is the record without getting monochromon. 1:59:48 is the record with getting monochromon. At least, the last time I checked, not sure if atwiki has been updated any time recently though.

Here's the 1:53:40 WR: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/28016306
Timed from the fade black to the CGI intro to the last input (save after beating the game).

As Eddalius said, most of the run comes down to mechanical skill. The part where RNG does make a difference is for learning a good technique. It's possible to finish the game with Spit Fire, but getting a powerful technique (Prominence Beam, Megalo Spark, Ice Statue, etc) can save a lot of time, specially at Mt. Infinity fights.

For the next run I'm going to try getting a Vademon and teaching him Bug, since it can be done instantly at Beetle Land if you have every stat above 500.

btw I can't confirm it since I haven't a PS2, but I believe that using Fast Disc Speed saves a few minutes over the entire run.

RNG is flawed in this game, with enough knowledge of the game and the ability to count, you can circumvent it. Nobody looked into that part of the game though, I only touched the surface.

The TASer did, but I don't have a list of all his information.

EDIT: Zastbat and I are going to break this game until it dies. I'm trying to pull a few strings to full understand the RNG, but other than that we are just going to learn how to stats reel like pros.

I have been doing practice and routing of this game on my twitch for the last four or so days, it has been good fun. If anyone wants to come hang out with me and Eddalius on skype send me a pm.

Hey i i'm learning this game for 2 weeks now, it's my first game that i speedrun.

What do you guys think about the Monzaemon route?
I'm sure you can get him in 30min and he has a lot of stats.

And does anyone know how to avoid this bug http://www.twitch.tv/derklees/c/2282961 ?

Klees: I believe that the Monzaemon route can be vastly improved, to the point to be on par with the Centarumon route. I'll try to improve the Monzaemon route eventually, whenever I get a ~2:00 run done with the Centarumon route (though I'm currently using a Meramon for that route xD). And no idea about the bug, first time I've seen that.

Also Eddalius, I can help you guys, I'll get in touch in skype in the next days, whenever I'm not busy with that real life thing.
