Let's Get Dangerous
Hey, i'm sorta new here, but i was browsing through some of my old games yesterday and found an old copy of one of my favourite games, Digimon World. Not sure if many of you remember this game, but seeing as i used to play it all the time i was thinking about speedrunning it. It looks long, but with a proper route and some item abuse i think it may be runnable.

Just putting this out there to see what everyone else thinks
Thread title:
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
Iirc, i played this one too. But never finished it. I guess it was getting too repetative. But since i never finished it, i'd sure would very much like to see it being done, so i can see how it ends  Tongue

So from my side. Go for it  Grin

It isn't a long game at all, but luck would be needed for a good route.
It's possible to get the Native Forest and Tropical Jungle areas done with your first Digimon at Child level, I'm sure. Maybe Drill Tunnel too, but the battles start getting harder there, so you'd want an Adult level by then.

The hard part is the evolution, since past Drill Tunnel, a Perfect level is needed, IMO. To evolve you have to train, and it might not work out right (example, I was aiming for Megadramon and I got a Hououmon).

After your first Digimon dies (around 18-20 days if it's Perfect level), you have to spend the next 10 days or so training it so you can get another Perfect to keep going. This should be avoided...you'd need to complete the game on your first Digimon, I believe. I'm sure there's ways to rush through everywhere to get the 50 points needed to open the final dungeon.

In my last playthrough, I skipped Factorial Town because I couldn't get it to activate, doing Toy Town instead. You could force your first mon to evolve into Numemon after/slightly before opening Toy Town so you could easily get a Monzaemon as your ultimate, but he's one of the weaker ones (I did beat the game with him, though, after training a bit and tossing lots of items)

Yeah...that was a lot of text :x I just remember a lot since I beat the game a month ago. Good luck if you decide to run it.
Let's Get Dangerous
Thanks, i've been looking at the run a bit more, and i'm now checking to see if the effects of battle items stack. If i can find some way to compensate for the lack of training required for the run, and get the luck factor going, i think i might be able to do this in good time. I'm probably going to go with a segmented run.

Thanks for all the help coming in, any more ideas would be great

I'll try to use English Digimon names for this post to eliminate confusion...apologies if I miss one.

Getting all the recruits in Native Forest should come first. Agumon is required, Kunemon opens up a helpful shortcut, and Palmon upgrades the meat farm. From there, use Coelamon to go to the jungle and get Betamon and possible Centarumon if you can. I'd put Centarumon at the beginning of a segment if possible, since it's a bit luck-dependent how much you get shot, and it'd be best to go through his area with little waiting and item usage.

A hard part will be managing items, since you won't be fighting extra enemies that drop items. Food is a problem until the item shop sells meat, and then you need enough money to stock up. Also, toilet usage. I can give you a list of where a lot of them are, very helpful to memorize where they are until you can buy porta-potties.

Overall, when you go to areas, you should try to clean them out on the first visit. This is a problem with a place like Drill Tunnel, where you have to wait some number of days for things to open. So you could trigger that and go to another area like Great Canyon and do things there. Speaking of that area, putting Monochromon's shop minigame at the beginning of a segment would help too, since that's another luck dependent section.

Let's Get Dangerous
Great! I was already planning on doing the runthrough of native forest and tropical jungle in the first day, but activating the digging of drill tunnel early was something i hadn't considered. One problem I'm having with running through both Centarumon and Betamon as soon as i'm over the river is that i have to get through them fast enough to go back and get Coelamon in the same afternoon. I should be able to overcome this though.

Also, depending on how fast i do it, my digimon gets sleepy soon after crossing the river and i'd like to have it sleep close to the end of tropical jungle so i can move into overdell. Can't remember now if i need to do anything special to cross Great Canyon though.

Also, that toliet list would be great, I can remember native forest and the areas around it, but the ones that are further out i'm a little fuzzy on

Yuramon talks about the invisible bridge to Great Canyon after you visit the area once, I believe. I THINK you have to talk to him before you can cross it.

And for the toilet list:
Native Forest: Three screens down from File City. It's a large area with a left exit to Dragon Eye Lake.
Tropical Jungle: One screen north from the first screen at the beach, follow the middle green path. The area has a couple Yanmamon (day) or J-Mojamon (night) wandering around.
Great Canyon: The same screen as Monochromon's shop, which I believe is one screen north of the entrance (across the invisi-bridge)
Mt. Panorama: There's one at the screen right below the Gear Savanna entrance. This is also the screen you get to when you run through Drill Tunnel.
Gear Savanna: Next to the entrance of Trash Mountain.
Geko Swamp: One screen up from the entrance.
Freezeland: It's such a big area, it's hard to find. But I've been to it before.

Those are all the ones I remember. I'm sure there's one in Factorial Town, but I didn't explore that area on my playthrough. I forget what Digimon brings the porta-potties to the item shop, but it's one of the three you get in Gear Savanna/Mt. Panorama (Unimon, Patamon, Biyomon).
Rock-It-Man
OMG i loved this game so much.

I never finished it and would love to see a speedrun.

Id suggest doing the ogremon fights, you get the item to digivolve your digimon to Digitamamon. That would be very helpful im sure.

Vademon is easy to get as a digimon with the right requirements. Just digivolve a rookie asap to champion and u get him. I dont know why... but its pretty awesome...
I dunno where to get any champion digivolve items from tho...

Someone else know where a champion digivolution item is?

I was planning on doing this, but I decided not to because of the random factors. This strategy seems to be good. It assumes that you start with Gabumon. For this method, you must become Garurumon and get Ice Statue. That way, you can beat MetalGreymon and Machinedramon with mainly low stats. The idea is that you train speed a lot and use only Ice Statue against them. That should work against any boss.

Let's Get Dangerous
Excellent HalfMillennium! those are some big improvements on the route i was planning. If i can defeat drimogemon early, i might activate the dirt shifting and go do something else for better time management, as the path becomes clear even if you do not clear the dirt yourself.

Probably will require a bit of luck to turn gabumon to garurumon, and gabumon is a bit weaker than agumon in the early game, though sonic jab is alot faster than spit fire.

The Garurumon Ice Statue method should solve the problem i was looking at with fighting the higher level bosses. It might be better to do palmon while i get agumon and kunemon, for the brain chip she drops. besides, there's usually a fair amount of time between finishing kunemon and afternoon for coelamon...

Or i could just take the spare time to do more training
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Gabumon can learn Spit Fire from Agumon if you feel you need it. The overall focus is on speed. Sonic Jab is fast enough to be used until you get Ice Statue on Day Five. I don't think Garurumon can use it, so get Ice Statue immediately after transforming.

The easiest way to become Garurumon is to fulfil the 90% Discipline requirement. This may involve a fair amount of scolding, which may affect other things. He should last long enough to finish the game before regenerating. His Happiness will gradually increase naturally. If necessary, praise him after Digivolving. There is another trick to quickly boost Discipline. Give him a non-food item (say, a Small Recovery) and hope he refuses it. When he does, immediately scold him. His Discipline will increase significantly with no negative impact on his Happiness.

A slight modification. I've just remembered that you don't get Giromon immediately after defeating him. Go back to his room after you've got Andromon on Day Ten/Eleven.

The only risk is that Garurumon will become SkullGreymon or MegaSeadramon. SkullGreymon is unlikely because of his high stat requirements, but MegaSeadrmon is a possibility. He can use Ice Statue anyway, so it doesn't matter if he transforms.

I have made a big oversight. You need to clear Drill Tunnel to get to Mt. Panorama. You might have to switch days Three and Four around. If necessary, move days Five and even Six forward a day.
slice of pie
ive attempted a speed run for it but it was horrid...

if you could control the digimon during the fight instead of yelling at it..you would more than likely win more fights
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
Thats why you can make segments.. so nobody sees how much pain you had to endure untill it finally went right ^^
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
How long does it take for Drimogemon to clear the dirt if you don't help him? If it only takes him two days or less, that's fine. If it takes him three days, do everything else you'd normally do that day. Take Birdramon to Great Canyon, win the first three Ogremon fights, get Shellmon, Whamon and Penguinmon, defeat Garurumon. Not necessarily in that order. Then after you get Sukamon, defeat Otamamon and go to Misty Trees. You'll probably visit Freezeland before defeating Otamamon anyway so get Gabumon then.

I think it's three days for the second Drimogemon event. The same applies to Andromon.

Let's Get Dangerous
I'm fairly sure that it is three days for the first Drimogemon event, however i haven't had time to do the research so i can't be sure. I've done a bit of practice now, memorising locations and that, and i'm planning on doing most of the rookie section of the run this weekend (God only knows how i'm going to get past Centarumon without going insane. Damn him and his one shot kills!)
waifus are laifu
There's some invisible timer to his shots. Or maybe it's based off of the clock time. I've never gotten through without taking any shots, though.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Do it while your Digimon doesn't have much HP. If it has 999 HP or less, a Small Recovery is enough there. With one of those being used, it can fully recover. You start the game with three and a Revive Disk. That restores 50% HP outside of battle. If necessary, wait until Day Two and get Centarumon after you trigger the dirt shifting mission. The problem is that not getting Centarumon loses four points, because you need him for Unimon. Then when you go to Mt. Panorama on Day Five/Six, Unimon is there.
Let's Get Dangerous
Oh, i definietly agree that getting Centarumon just after crossing the river is the best plan, i was just saying it would be great if i could get through the maze without taking damage, as it would save time and leave me another sm recovery (gabumon tends to need them). I have gotten through without being shot before, but that's mostly luck. Also, i agree with Kari on the invisible timer, i think it works off some sort of repetitive countdown, and dosen't activate if you're in one of the little hideaways when it goes off
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I don't think there's a timer. If there is, it's random. He doesn't shoot if you're in the shadows but apart from that it seems random. If it's going to be a problem, delay getting him.

AGHH! my beautiful, beautiful segments, gone, all gone...

Thanks to a dodge dvd and a silly recorder, i am now going to have to go back and redo everything, EVERYTHING...

not that i had that much done, but still, i don't want to sit in agony as gabumon runs around in circles getting beat up by every single enemy again...

*sigh* I think i'm gonna go and cry
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
If it helps, then go cry... seriously.. better than botteling up your emotions and really start to go crazy... but after that.. get back on the run... as you said, you weren't too far in the game. That sounds like you can take that setback. After all, one who can endure the torment of speedrunning can take that one as well  8)
Hiding in the darkness...
Man oh man. I'd love to see this run. That was the game I got with my first Playstation almost when I was 9 or 10 and I could NEVER get a proper digivolution. I couldn't figure it out and got so PO'd I threw the disc in a fire. I would love to see how an expert does it.
Let's Get Dangerous
Sorry for the gap between posts, i've been really busy the last couple of weeks

to prove i am slowly working away, here's the links to the segments that comprise the first (digital) day of the run

Segment 1:
Segment 2, Part 1:
Segment 2, Part 2:

Sorry about the awful sound quality of the videos, i had a terrible time trying to encode and upload them...

i'll work on getting better quality versions up, as well as putting up the rest of the stuff i've already done
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Great menu speed and initial item collection. Going to train first is great. You picked up on the subtle clues as to whether or not Gabumon was hungry. I really like that ability to see. Agumon fight, yes, it could have gone slightly better, but it's usually slower with Gabumon anyway. His lack of a projectile attack means he's slower to win. You took a fairly big risk not running back to File City after the Agumon fight. Good job it paid off. Kunemon was a bit panicky. After Kunemon, absolutely perfect! Discipline boost trick AND he gets an MP boost! Fantastic!

Quite lucky getting that DigiMushroom on the beach. Good job avoiding the Yanmamons. I hadn't actually thought of going that way to Great Canyon. One thing I'm not sure about. I don't know if you did enough at Great Canyon to trigger Yuramon's speech. I think you have to examine the actual bridge itself. I may not be right, so speak to him outside of a segment recording and see. Mangrove Region I thought was good, it's difficult to get through there without any battles. I thought you might sleep somewhere in Amida Forest.
waifus are laifu
I've gotten Yuramon to tell me about the bridge just from entering the first Great Canyon screen, so I think it's okay.

Great menu navigation and character navigation too, since you can move around before the screen completely fades in.
