Anybody thought of speedrunning this obscure, survival-horror release on the 360?

For those of you unfamiliar with Deadly Premonition, it's essentially tries to be a survival horror game (but it's not really that scary) with a mix of GTA-style open world exploration and a bit of a noir detective story. You control Francis York Morgan, a quirky FBI Special Agent who is quite loved by the fans for his odd mannerisms, behavior, and split personality "Zach" who he frequently monologues to. He basically goes around trying to solve the murder of a young girl, and periodically gets sucked into an "other world" where the actual "gameplay" happens. It usually involves him finding 3 objects to put together some profiling about the scene in his head, and usually when he's found all 3 the other world sequence ends. There are puzzles, but very few of them are anything more than "find this" and "stick it here". If you know of this game, you probably either love it or hate it. There is pretty much no in-between.

Anyway, since most of the story scenes can be skipped by pressing start, and you can run past practically every single enemy in the nightmare sequences, I'm wondering how far this game could be pushed by speedrunning. You can even get an item that lets you warp to different areas quite early on, eliminating quite a bit of the POINT A - TO POINT B driving the game has (which would be a pain for speedrunning, since the game's location, Greenvale, is supposed 5 sq. mi).

What it boils down to is that the story scenes can be skipped, the game can be played on easy, and a majority of the enemies can be ran past. This is also a game that, what even with its tedious driving sequences and 50 sidequests probably won't last more than twenty hours normally. I did a little less than half of this sidequests and took quite a lot of my time exploring and I finished with a quite low time of around 11 hours. And this was on normal, where you basically have to stand still and shoot every individual enemy for about 7 seconds to kill (and I roasted a total of 363 during the entirety of the game). I honestly believe if you push yourself hard you could probably have this game completed in less than 4-5 hours or so. For the record, there are
27
chapters in the game, and a lot of them are very short. Even moreso when you're skipping and running from everything, of course.

I personally am not sure if I am up to the task. I was very interested in the concept of speedrunning Deadly Premonition, and even started out a test speedrun, but the concept of having to optimize the time spent on the roads kind of turns me off from the concept of a professional speedrun. Interested to hear what other people think, though. I'll definitely complete my test speedrun.

Oh and I'm not so sure there's a thread on this or not, I checked both the verification forum and this one several times, but going along with the non-popularity of the game, I'm assuming there isn't one. My apologies if there is.

I would absolutely love to see a speedrun of this game. I'd do it myself but I just don't have the time, aside from the fact that I haven't finished it yet, either Wink

My test speedrun continues. I'm roughly halfway through the game, maybe slightly more, and I have 2:22:16, using the ingame timer.

I'm making a lot of mistakes and *none* of it is optimized so you could probably shave 30~35 minutes off everything I've done so far. The game is a slightly tougher nut to crack than I thought, but I still do believe the game can be speedran in a timely fashion. I'm starting to map out routes and strategies right now for next time.
Finished. The ingame timer lists 4:18:04 as my finish time. Sub 4 is possible, 3:30 or less is probably possible, sub 3 is probably not. I was actually surprised at how much easier it went, I didn't spend as much time on the road as I thought I would. Going to try and figure out a few more ways to save some time and then I'm going to run it again with no mistakes.
"Time to go to work..."
I've never touched the game my self (if I had a 360, I totally would) but that hasn't stopped me from watching Giant Bomb play it through in its entirety.
Twice.
Pretty much the only thing speedrun-helpful in there is that you can run into doors to open them faster. And the magnum or shotgun is killer to Ceiling Ladies.

Suffice to say, I am very interested in a speedrun of this game, and if forty hours of watching game reviewers stumble through it is enough, I'd even volunteer to verify.
Isn't that right, Zach?

I actually discovered something of a glitch. Near the end of the game, York has to push open a door. This door normally takes around something like 7 seconds to push open, but I managed to phase through it somehow.

Every little bit helps, eh?
Scan did you finish the radio side quest in that test run?  What are your thoughts on the inf ammo .357 worth the time getting all the bones?
Personal Text?
Hoping to hear more about this run!
Did you do the junkyard side quests? With the amount of time spent in the police car it should help a bit. Also, if there was some trick to beat the ceiling chicks faster, besides just a strong gun, it would help a lot. I'll try and help if you want some testing for a spot.

Did you play on easy? I am finding it tough to believe if you played on Normal or above and that you made mistakes and managed to get 4 hours. Getting the bones for the
infinite magnum and getting the infinite SMG in itself is closer to an hour. The radio is no worries because you can pick that up on the way back from the murder site if you plan your driving correctly. I really don't buy it. My best time was 7:58 on normal. and believe me I thought that was fast.

Basically the parts that really eat up the time are

A - Obviously with out a doubt the crawlers. These things can really only be killed quickly with the Magnum. I've tried other methods they really aren't as fast.
B - Getting the Bones for Willie, Getting the Infinite SMG or Possibly the Infinite Shotgun although I don't recommend the latter.
C- The fishing at the end of Episode 3. You can't afford to screw up. You'll have to save and reload.
D- The police station at the real end before Carol's death. Those Shotgun guys are hard to run past.. Besides you need to kill most of them there.

Really though it's A that makes this game annoying to speedrun. Although I think a no damage run would be easier in my opinion Tongue
While I do think Deadly Premonition is definitely a viable option for speedruns. It appears to me there is a lack of gameplay other then GiantBomb's playthru. I never quite figured what the purpose of that is. I don't usually use this site but please if anyone ends up doing something I really would be interested in seeing. I think survival horror games are the most fun to speedrun and I know theres already a Gazillion for other popular franchises Silent Hill, RE , etc. So yeah.
Well, it's been quite a while since anyone's posted in this thread. I don't know if anyone is interested in running this game anymore, but I'm reviving this I guess because I might be.

What I'm gathering from these old posts is that the time spent getting the necessary weapons and fighting the crawlers are the biggest roadblocks to a good run of this game. I think there may be a solution to both: The Legendary Guitar Grecotch!

Basically it's the most broken weapon in the game and it can be gotten very easily. You do the quest chain you get from Lilly in the Milk Barn, and after you help her rearrange her storage room for a third time, she gives you access to her husband's cherished guitar. This guitar happens also to be an extremely effective melee weapon.

The pros:

- Extremely high damage. It can one- or two-shot most enemies.
- It's easy to get. The quest chain to get it starts in Chapter 2 and isn't terribly time-consuming.
- To my knowledge, Grecotch is the most effective way of dealing with the crawlers. If used in conjunction with some knowledge of the crawler's attack patterns, it can down one in two hits -- see the 32 minute mark in this video:
(thanks to supergreatfriend for that).

The cons:

- It's slow
- The hit detection is kind of wonky

Those negatives can be mitigated by practice though. In my opinion there's really no reason to use any other weapons once you get Grecotch, save for a few situations. Certainly I don't think there's any reason to go out of your way to get the infinite SMG or shotgun.

Basically the route I have planned right now starts doing Lilly's side-quests as soon as it is possible. I also get the flower for the radio quest on the way to the hospital right at the start of chapter 3. Once you get the radio and have Grecotch, I think you can kind of plow through the rest of the game. I still have a lot to figure out, like which other side-quests are worth doing. As someone mentioned above, the junkyard quests might be worth doing, for instance. But I think I can definitively say that getting the bones for the infinite magnum or trying to get the other infinite guns is not worth it.

There's also a trick that could be exploited involving the save system. When you complete a chapter, if you return to the title screen you have the option of retrying that chapter. However your items and the quests you have completed are still saved. So if you replay chapters in this way you can complete side-quest chains without moving on in the story. Right now I can't think of a scenario in which this would save time. I was considering using it to get Grecotch in Chapter 2, but this would require playing through that chapter four times before moving on, and I think that would just waste time. The other hospital isn't bad enough where you really need Grecotch for it. You can just run past most of the enemies. But that trick might come in useful at some point, I dunno.

I'll try to put together some videos of routes and whatnot in the near future.
The TrUest of Shades
I am guessing this is going to be done on the Xbox, or have (if you own a ps3) though of grabbing Red Seed Profiles (aka the japanese version of the game). I don't know if it would be faster, but i mean that is what testing it for

I do own a PS3 as well, so when I'm a bit less strapped for cash I'll buy Red Seeds Profile and try it out. I'm guessing the only thing it would save time on is at the points where you're forced to read text, but if it saves a measurable amount of time, that's still worth it obviously.

edit: I guess another thing that could be discussed is whether this would be done segmented or not. Personally I don't see any to reason do a segmented run unless that save trick proves to be useful at some point in the game.

Reviving this thread. I've done some work longplaying this, and can say that Grecotch is not the best melee weapon in the game. I haven't gotten around to try and time how long it takes to obtain each one yet, but I'm pretty sure if you route it correctly, the Infinite Wrench from Quint's sidequest is a much better option. It's quick, kills in 1 hit almost every time, and hit detection is normal. Another sidequest item that will definitely be helpful is the Radio. (EDIT: I should add that the Wrench is the only weapon you'll need for the entire game, except for Kaysen at the end, you'll want the .357 which you should have more than enough money for by then.) (EDIT2: I'll probably be the only one that continues running this, so typing all this out may be for naught; but I did want to mention that the wrench kills Crawlers in two hits, although you can only hit them when they're on the walls. However it is still much quicker than the shotgun or .357.)

Sequence breaking should be pretty much impossible, although I'll definitely be trying to brute-force break the game to try and skip past the section of the late-game where you're following around Willie in circles to get to the clock tower. That takes wwway too much time, and I think eventually we could try and skip past that all. Same goes for chasing Carol around mid-game.

DP:DC is coming to Steam this Halloween, so I'll also be testing if there's any minor time-differences between the two. The game should run much faster, and loading screens will be a lot shorter. So I'm predicting that the PC version will be better for speedrunning. (EDIT3: On second thought, the Director's Cut version will most likely be slower because of the added cutscenes, not yet sure if they're skippable, I don't own a DC copy for the 360.)

Ja Hallo und Herzlich Willkommen I'm StiWii Rage!
So speedruning Deadly Premonition what can i say. I'm playing the Director's Cut version on the PS3. The Original version on XBox360 and the Japanese PS3 version a 25-30 minutes slower than the Director's Cut. The best version would by the PC version because of 60frames. But this version crashes all the time. So i picked the PS3 version and here some difference to. I can not say it for sure but it fell that the download version runs a little bit better against disc. At least you need all the dlc stuff because in my route through the game i'm using the Field ops Suit and the Green Drifter car. And you can change Emily's clothes.

I started in february 2014 with an time around 5:30:00. My PB right now is 3:34:48 IGT but my goal is sub 3:30.
Some word to the "in game timer" there a two of them. One is shown at the end of every chapter this timer is bullshit. Why? I have tested different things and the biggest is that the timer stop when you pressing start.
Also on this timer my Best would by 2:54 my RTA PB is 3:43:37 taken with livesplit. So the difference is very big. The other "in game timer" you can find it when you pressing Load Game at the Main Menu. So there is only 8-9 minutes difference to RTA.
So in this timer only the loading time is cutting out.

Another thing you lose time when you save so an single segment should be the only deal. I thing this is a good small overview of what is going on. After long planning and routing the game i will start to record and i hope the run is finished still this year.

Looking forward to seeing a run of Deadly Premonition! ...sort of. Me and Kazooie have played this game a bit and observed some speedrun-relevant things.

Did you know that the game opts to warp you to your destination in the first few missions of the game if you waste an entire day? So, sleep overnight. Then go somewhere outdoors and wait (smoke) until the current quest becomes active again. Then the game will ask you if you want to do the quest, and if you answer yes, you instantly warp there. Unfortunately this trick only works for the objectives of going to the police station or the hospital for the first time. Sleeping and warping might not be faster with the first objective, and as for the hospital, you can just death warp there anyway. But it should be verified if warping would still help in either case.

York can do smaller warps otherwise too. Using a flare can warp York from behind buildings to the nearest parking lot or street. You can also warp between windows by peeking in one, then switching windows, then stopping peeking. Not sure if either of these tricks could come in handy.

You can use boxes, trolleys and other items to push York through walls. Not always easy, and what we've tested around in the first few dungeons we haven't found a real sequence break to do yet.
I thought this game was fairly lenghty when I played it, sub 3:30 seems pretty damn fast, good luck on improving your PB.
All the things
I accidentally did a small sequence-break in one of the dungeons towards the end during my casual playthrough a while back. I can't remember the exact dungeon, but it was a room full of fire on the ground. The fire is supposed to cause you to move back automatically if you get too close, but in one instance I was able to cause the retreat animation to push me through the fire to a separate path. There may have been some interations with a shadow too, but I don't exactly remember any more.
must be gettin' tired
I'm must be getting tired. New RTA PB 3:38:36. Unfortunately i was not saving the game at the end so i don't no the IGT time. But with some new strats i was able to cut 5 minutes out of the run. Although i lost 30 seconds in the beginning.
I'm thankful for all kinds of help. And i will try some of the tips i'm getting here.
must be gettin' tired
Update time! at first check this: http://www.twitch.tv/lazerlong/c/5450213 I hope i find some time to watch his run to see the difference to my own run. Next week i have vacation. Then i can really focusing. For right now I have sometimes trouble with recording. I mean it is my first time doing somthing like this. And when i'm running i getting very nervous about my capture device. This morning i was recording some of my practice runs and after ten minutes the recording was freezing. Okay it is just the second time this was happening but i dont want running for 3 and a half hour just seeing that the video is broken.

But here some good news my new times PB IGT: 3:27:38 done in two segments.
I was thinking to make a segmented run because of a bug that can happen in chapter 12 and some other things were you can lose between 15-30 seconds.
I don't now. One more thing my new goal is sub 3:25 and when i look on my sum of best segments (3:33:48 RTA) it is possible maybe with a lot of luck!
must be gettin' tired
It was taking a while but it is done https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzNPiQPGX8F7zR5GOCxoiC8wOiH26JTGq this is now my final route through the game.
This is not a perfect run there was a few mistakes. I will rework the run but maybe someone find a better way through the game.
I don't no whether i will make an singel segment run because of an bug i called The Vanishing of George Woodman where it can happen at the beginning of chapter 6 that George is disappearing so that you can not getting the Radio.

After a long time and a lot of changing the rules for speedrunning this game i'm back with Deadly Premonition Hard Difficulty speedruns in 2016

I finished my first real 100% single segment run. The run was okay and i would have an video but my HDPVR2 decided to not work properly again. The only thing i must reroute the epilogue. The rest of the route is very good. I managed to get the rng down to a low level. But it is an very rng heavy category after all. So goals for 2016 is sub 3:45h for any% and sub 7h for 100%. Also because this is an very rng heavy game i will make segmented runs of both categorys.
