Thanks. Hopefully some verifiers come up to the plate soon, as I figure there are a quite a bit of people who would like to see this game beaten quickly. Though, it can me improved by the manipulation of the day/night cycle and getting the longitivity berries through that. However, I did the best I could based off what time it was in the game.
Not really, since the two situations where I can level up Fusion and Lumina are required battles. However, in the actual run, I only got Lumina and Fusion up one level against Bubble's Vambee Soldiers (this was the first time I tried to level up both of them.) The other time was against Queen Ant. I did manage to level Lumina up to, if I can remember, to level 17. Usually though, I use that battle to level up Fusion instead of Lumina. Since I decided to get two less Longetivity berries in the run (and the fact that I got past the trolley part without dying, which allowed me to keep Antidote assimulated), I decided to play safe against Queen Ant and used Lumina against the slugs. This, in my opinion, was actually a bad decision since it lost some time against Ed, which I usually use fusion against, as it is usually faster.
I don't remember anything about a cape. Are you referring to the L-cloth? If so, yes, I do get it, as it costs little time, and I also still had Bowling assimulated. To be able to use it, I did have to spend a little bit of time saving Dinneretta, but it doesn't cost much time thanks to the Water Scroll. The time is gained back later thanks to the L-glove.
Yeah, I suppose I meant the cloth. I was referring to the piece of L-equipment that you can choose what you want it to be. I remembered it becoming either a cape or something, and a blanket, which gives more health for sleeping.
Yep, that's the L-cloth, which can be made either into the L-glove or the L-quilt. The L-quilt is very handy though, as it also restores BP and allows you to go below 20% tiredness while asleep. However, in speedrunning, it's actually quite useless.
3:20 at Soda Fountain? Nice! That beats the Hell outta my 4:35 time!
On the 2 fights posted: Good job killing Ben in 2 rounds. He either took me longer than usual or made me use my S-Revive during my speedruns. >_< I liked how you got him while he was in mid-air.
Not much to say about Dark Lumina 2... you beat an easy boss quickly and cleanly. XD
Thank you for your comments, Rat. Though, you can note the first miss, which I executed Rumparoni-SP too early. That made the critical hit later on essential.
Just out of curiosity, how many Longetivity Berries did you get on your run?
Honestly, I can't remember because it's been so long (and because my older brother commandeered the PS2 for Let's Play stuff XP), but I think I probably got most or all the berries (to make up for the abysmal defense of having low levels... Ben gives me the most trouble damage-wise, next to Dark Lumina 3's clone-attack I haven't figured out how to properly dodge yet). I'm also big on sword techs so I take time to get those too; I like to chain Crosswise Cut and Desperado together, as well as abuse the Rumparoni muchly.
The whole speed run is inexcusable. I've never seen such horrible work attempted in a demo before. There are mistakes everywhere and very poor methods are used. Dozens of enemies could've been avoided without interaction; saving frequency could've been dropped; various Bincho Fields and Minkus that were far too out of the way could've been skipped to save a good amount of time; and I think the one that qualifies as the biggest time waster was how many times Deadstick had fallen into water/pitfalls without even CONSIDERING retrying the segment.
Anyone else notice how he only used a single save file? Everyone knows it's much more efficient and almost crucial to use multiple saves to compare segment times.
To sum it all up, 4 hours is extremely laughable. A sub-3 hour run should've been the goal for this game, but more importantly, it should've been done by someone with experience on speed runs--not this 23-year-old "gamer" whose only previous speed run work is Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on the SNES.
(This may seem harsh for my first post, but after never having problems with the speed runs posted before, I knew I had to speak out about this mockery made of the SDA after enduring so many teeth-clenching mistakes. I would very much like to see someone else completely put Deadstick's speed run to shame--even I would enjoy doing it myself if given the opportunity.)
I just finished segment 16 and I'm just as outraged. This run is a complete disgrace. That fight against Relic Keeper was some of the worst BS I've ever seen.
Who verified this garbage? This run goes against everything that makes SDA great. I also feel awkward being this harsh, but anyone who's watched the run can plainly see what we're talking about. This thing should be removed from the site.
I say you guys pull resources together and beat the run instead of asking for a recall... maybe even encourage deadstick to do better by offering suggestions on how to conduct a segmented run, or specific boss fights.
I watched the first couple of segments and thought they were pretty good. I understand that segments usually get progressively worse as the run goes on because the runner's bar lowers little by little. (The wisdom of xkcd.com rings true)
I really don't like to see this negative feedback given to a new potentially great runner. He's just started out and probably new running. As a new runner myself it makes me not want to put in the effort to make a run.
You are inexcusable. Instead of trying to help, you just start insulting him outright, saying that a BFM run is for a *real* speedrunner and not for a 23-year old *gamer* whose only other run is Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.
Guess what? Speedrunning is for anybody to try. For example, many of the good runs here were done by younger people, even as young as 16 or so. You have a right to criticize the run, but don't insult the runner, especially if he just started and especially if you don't know that person at all. And in your case, you are hurting in a helping community.
Grow up.
And I'm sorry that I'm so harsh, but you need to understand.
Big deal? It kind of sets me off to finally have the chance to watch a speed run done on one of my favorite games, only to be severely disappointed by an onslaught of ridiculous mistakes. What makes the situation funny is how Deadstick hyped the speed run for months and months, but in reality, half of the entire demo looks like it was half-assed in an attempt to get noticed here on the site. There are speed runners and then there are attention grabbers.
I could care less if I hurt anyone's "feelings" over the internet by claiming that they suck at a video game. My kid brother has played through Brave Fencer Musashi with better luck back when he was 9 years old! If Deadstick was serious about this speed run, he would've did his research. You can't rely on barebones methods forever.
In conclusion, if I had the recording equipment, I'd back up my brash assumptions and attitude by attempting the speed run myself, nailing the game in less than 3 hours in a fashion this game deserves. Like I said, some people are dedicated gamers and some aren't.
Okay, so in a nutshell: about half of the total jumps in the run so far are missed at least once. If this is an exaggeration, it's very slight. Some jumps are missed five to ten times. The fight against Relic Keeper is truly terrible, with poor attack timing and lots of unnecessary hits (each of which costs a ton of time in this fight).
At least once in the run the wrong dialogue option is selected and the conversation has to start over. Often he'll start going in the wrong direction and have to change course.
Most enemies in the game could be easily walked past without incident, but deadstick stops and takes the time to stop and THROW them, which is insane. If there's an explanation for this I'd like to know what it is.
I'm not here to insult the runner, and I'm sorry to call BS on the verifiers, but this comes off as an exploratory run rather than even a practice run. It lacks any sense of urgency whatsoever.
Once I get everything together to play this game again you can bet I'm going to give a run of it a shot now. I think this route even looks good! But the fact that I haven't run the game myself doesn't make this run magically decent. It is terrible.
I think if deadstick gave it another go and put more time into getting each segment right the results would be great.

This is why I mentioned exactly which segments were awful. Segment 11 is self-evident. Seriously.
Also, this is negative feedback given to a new and terrible run. The fact that the runner is new is immaterial.
