Barb 3 is back up to snuff with a 2 second improvement to boot:

BARB3 in 4:06 < 4:08

This mission is really frustrating to run.  For one, the blue player has a patrol of monks, men at arms, and a mangonel that is at a random location and half of these locations kill the run.  The other thing is that the conversion takes a random amount of time to complete, anywhere from 20 to 35 seconds, with an average of about 24.  Obviously for a speed run you reset until you get one of those rare 20s, as this one is.  Can't tell you how many perfect runs got to the end and had a 30 second conversion to ruin everything.

Updating the first page with the new videos.  I think next up is the other two barbarossa missions to finish off that campaign.

Barb5 got some neat strategies, looking forward to finished run a lot.

Do you know what % the game time is compared to realtime?
Game time is exactly double real time on fast speed (so 4:06 game time is 2:03 real time).

Been busy with other things and holiday stuff, don't know when i'll be back to this.
Bump to a really old thread!

I managed to clock a 19:51 on Joan3 using Feudal Age tactics, which could be improved a little bit with exceptional luck.

Firstly, send 2 cavalry+Joan to the center castle, 2 cavalry+pikemen+Hire to the left-most, and everything else to the right-most.

The cavalry and Joan will be able to slip through the gate as soon as red makes a men-at-arms there. Shortly after, Hire's party can slip through after red makes a cavalry. They just focus their respective castles, while keeping Joan and Hire on defense to kill any archers that spawn. Requires constant attention, as if either of them gets distracted out of the castle's deadzone, they can easily die.

As for the third, focus all crossbows on a wall segment, while your villages build a tower at the wall to kill red's towers, along with 7 houses and a barracks. Once the towers and the wall segment are down, get the crossbowmen into the deadzone, set them on guard for archers, and focus everything else on the castle. Queue as many Spearmen as you can afford onto the castle; inevitably your pikemen on the left castle will die, which is fine. If enough units at left survive (and joan+hire do too) all castles fall nearly simultaneously.
Also clocked 11:36 on Joan4. Use your army to pick off the green units, start building rams to destroy the green town center, use everyone else to kill the orange town center, then get the attention of the yellow army to sneak 4 rams (first 2 then another 2) through the gates to kill that town center. Requires some luck manipulating the yellow AI but shouldn't be too difficult to perfect.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
look at this too: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=517122

I may put again the aoe2 bounty if its true! (no need to run the "updated" version though )

Oh damn, that'd be awesome.

As long as my CD keys work, at least. >.>

10:02 on Joan5. Broke the wall at the river with the cannons, ran Joan to the refugees and then the army ASAP, used cavalry to kill the incoming cannonship/pikemen/catapults before sending my cannons through the city and having them attack the wall aside the army to get out again.

I think it could be 9:00 with some better pathing/execution.

And Joan6 is an easy 5 minutes by just rushing the cannoneers to the north wall, shooting it down, and running the wagon through.

Edit: Oh, I notice Gombil's old runs are on Hard, while I'm playing on Standard. I doubt my routes translate to Hard considering the significantly lower aggro range.
It appears it is finally time for me to return to this game again!  So let's get to it.

I am sorry I did not see your posts Onin, but one thing I can say is the difficulty makes a huge difference on a lot of missions.  If you are still around you should try some of your strats on Hard and see if they still work.

If you don't want to bother reading through all the previous posts, the reason for Hard is for 2 things:
1)  I planned on eventually running conquerors and that does not have a Very Hard setting for campaign (so to be consistent)
2)  The game is really unfair on Very Hard and turns pretty much all of the missions into long wars of attrition.  This is because the computer massively cheats on Very Hard but not Hard.  As far as I'm aware, there is no real AI difference between the two other than the massive cheating.

Now, for runs!

I'll start things off with this delicious update to Genghis Khan 5, chopping off 6 minutes (and probably more once I get a few more runs in)!  The old route used trebs to get through the green fortress, but I found out after some testing that sneaking a villager through the gate is not only possible, but not even that difficult.  This is a WIP and will be redone (lol the workers standing around the mining camp for like 2 minutes)

I am also working on GK4.  Should be under 15 minutes by the time I'm done with it.

The revisit to GK4 was very much needed.  The old time was 21:44, and I have already almost halved this!

GK4 in 11:51 < 21:44

I think this can be lowered by another minute or so with better execution, and I will continue to try doing this.  The main reason for the huge improvement is apparently back in the dark ages when I first ran this mission, I was not thorough in my victory condition testing.  Before I thought it was necessary to destroy all town centers and villagers, but this is not the case.

- Yellow will resign when both of his castles and his wonder are destroyed.
- Red will resign when his castle and most of his military is destroyed.

So the strategy becomes this:  Yellow is very easy, just needs a couple rams to take out the structures.  Red can be killed by kiting his entire army with the starting cav archers and then a ram or two on his castle.

Here is the updated WIP on this mission.

Just revisited SAL5, employing pretty much the same strategy I did before but with some better resource management and execution.  There was not previously a video up for this one, so here is the WIP!

This was only my 2nd attempt while recording.  I think it can be made faster by reducing to only 2 monks and MAYBE cutting sanctity for monk HP, otherwise not much can be done to speed up orange.  I remember back when I was running this mission before, I somehow had a lucky run in which I got orange to leave one onager in the vicinity of the orange villager pen and I got him to kill his own villagers with it.  I might be able to repeat this by destroying my wall pieces as soon as the conversion is successful.

Wow! Really like these runs you just posted - fun and interesting strategies to game the game in a wonderful way!
train kept rollin
Glad to see you are back on this Gombill.
This is my favorite RTS game, as you might guess from my username, and I'm really excited to see serious speedrunning. I had been thinking of doing something like this before I discovered this site, and these videos are quite inspiring. I'm not a genius at this game, but I am above average at multiplayer.

I have a few observations that might shave precious seconds off:

You don't seem to be using hotkeys much, like ctrl+a to go straight to the archery range, or pressing . to go directly to a lazy villager. On scenarios that take  several minutes, like the 5th Saladin one, you could probably save several seconds by doing that rather than doing everything by mouse.

If a wolf is charging at a villager, the villager will have no trouble dealing with the threat, but the time taken from building is a few seconds. Rather than engage the wolf, perhaps lay foundations for a couple of walls (palisade or stone) right around the villager so the wolf can't get in. You just need to get each wall segment above 1 HP, and the villager can build in peace. You can delete the walls after the building is complete.

Fervor doesn't work, except on monks with relics. Might be worth it for the first Frederick Barbarossa scenario, or the third Saladin one, but probably not otherwise.

Is it legal to do the non-expansion scenarios in the expansion? Bloodlines and thumb ring do make certain sections easier, though I'm not sure how much faster it is.

Keep up the good work. I am in awe. I knew a lot of these tricks from my own experiments, but was blown away by some things, like Barbarossa scenario 4.
I started running this game and will try to go through all the missions and set a decent time on them.

Got already multiple missions significantly faster than gombill his attempts, you can find them at speedrun.com which provides nice submitting/score board for each individual level. I'm running on either standard 1.0c or HD version. If anyone here has some attempts/tricks not reported I'll gladly take a look at them.

Included my times that are worse than his in red, empty spaces are levels without a completed (timed) run

Videos are outdated since twitch changed links, have done some updating on best IL times

Last Edit: June-16. Links to youtube for WW/JoA. Over 11 minutes saved on these campaigns compared to earlier.

Finally broke 1h additional timesave!

I'm running on either standard 1.0c or HD version.

Hopefully you will do the whole run on one Version of the game. The Ai has been improved the HD Version so they cant be compared.

SDA finally needs a run of aoe2.
We're taking the approach of using whichever version is fastest for each level. It's the same approach as AoE1 takes, as vanilla is sometimes faster than the Rise of Rome expansion version.
I think most important is to show a nice strategy for each campaign level, so the small differences in time gain by picking a different version shouldn't matter too much.

Did some attempts on Sal6 trying to beat every enemy as a fast solution, but will be really tough and don't think it is worth it spending my time on at the moment. Total timesave won't be much if it can be done faster at at all.

Updated the post with Sal5 and Sal6 times.
Didnt they remove or increase the framecap in the HD version at some point? Wouldnt that be more interesting to run then?
They increased the maximum game speed to 8x. Which is really freaking silly so we're not using that >.>
HD version is 60 fps, standard AoC is 20 fps

For the running it doesn't matter that much. I play mainly on AoC since I'm used to that and you don't have to speed up the game from 1.5 to 2.0 speed at the start. (somehow you can't set speed to be 2.0 from start in HD) The difficulty of the game is mainly the multitasking, it isn't precise aiming like in shooters for which higher fps is nice.

Goals for times now, for which I pretty much have the route

JoA5 9.00-9.30
SAL1 - ~7.00
SAL2- <10.00
SAL4- ~6.00
BARB5 ~6.10 on AoK with monks converting ship
GK1 - <8.00

Probably try to get these done first before going to GK missions. It is a nice 11 min cut of total time if I get them recorded around those times.

Edit:
Sal 4 in 5:59 not completely smooth level and somehow have 1-2s black in middle of video, will record again later
Sal 2 in 9:30 Blue ships have to suicide on yellow towers to win, this time they randomly rushed for yellow base, no clue why, most of the time fail to get them into the towers with baiting with my transport ship (or atleast not fast enough)
Barb 6 in 5:52 didn't think of the Sappers upgrade in castle before, but +15 villager attack is really strong.

Looks like we might be able to get under 4:30:00 total igt.

Edit 2, some WW reruns improvements to be on par with Gombill times:
WW 1: 2:06
WW 2: 3.12
WW5: 5:13

Edit 3: Only 2 red timers left.
Barb3 is really fast, happy with improved 4:10 on it for now
Improved barb 5 on AoK with converting transport to sub 6. (5.59)... though I had worst possible RNG on that run with converting.

Run over multiple versions not allowed? Why not go for the fastest of each version to get the best run?
Dragon Power Supreme
SDA rules requires you to run the whole game on one version only and not multiple ones.
