What's your favorite gunblade? Taking suggestions for a prize.

Greetings to all. If you don't already know, I'm the one who made the Master Sword for AGDQ 2012. My next big project will be a gunblade, as popularized by FF8. I'd like to get some consensus from the community as to what design is best. There are many options.

Note: My knowledge of firearms is extensive, but my knowledge of FF8 is minimal. I've never even played the game.

Option 1: Seifer's blade from FF8.

Option 2: Squall's blade from FF8.

Option 3: Some pic I found on Google Images. I don't know if it's fan-made or what, but I like the blade design and overall profile, even if it's unrealistic as a firearm.

Option 4: Someone's idea of a steampunk gunblade. I don't really like the useless gears tacked on just to call it steampunk, but many may disagree. Anyway, the reason I picked this one is that except for the blade, this looks like a real shooter. The barrel actually lines up with the cylinder and it's not obstructed by the blade.

Option 5: A real gunblade? I can't tell from this pic, but this may be the real thing. As many of you know, these were actually in use for a long time, long ago.

Option 6: Some kind of futuristic blade. This is a refreshing departure from the norm. Note that the blade is actually beside the barrel - a first for me.

Option 7: Suggest whatever you like here. Post your own pics and discuss, etc.

I think honestly if you go with any, go with Squall's. It's a very iconic image and used in a LOT of promotional material. I actually got Squall's necklace and it came with a little gunblade (silly cute). I'm sure there's one for Seifer, but nobody loves Seifer. Tongue

I personally like the smaller silver one, but I too have never played FF8.

Since this is a "what's your favorite" topic I voted for 4; thing looks awesome. 2 is probably the best choice for the marathon prize to be modeled after, however, it just doesn't need my help to win this poll.

I believe the FF8 gunblades are designed for the gun shot to send explosive vibrations down the sword thus upping the damage potential rather than working as an actual gun, so don't get thrown off by the seemingly odd design. Since the most well known gunblades in gaming history are those of FF8, I'd say that type would probably be more popular with the audience.

My preference is for the silver blade or the radical blade, but if Squall's blade draws the crowd, I'll go with that.

How important is that little chain thing on the handle of Squall's blade? Can anyone tell me what it is?

Can anyone suggest dimensions for this thing? Remember that this will be all metal (with wood grips), so it can't be four feet long, like in some of the artwork. I'm thinking of a total length of around 26".

I haven't settled on Squall's blade yet, as this poll isn't even 24 hours old, just soliciting suggestions.

Rane has it right. The picture at the top of his link is a pendant that hangs from the end of the chain. It's pretty important. There's also an engraving on the blade of Griever, but it's a different design.

26" is probably a good size. Like I said above, roughly the same size of the smaller silver blade would be good, I think.

The Griever is central to FF8. It appears on the end of his gunblade, his necklace, his ring, the title screen, and one boss near the end is even named Griever.

So yes, it's important to have. I could try to take a picture of my necklace, since it's the same base design (the ring, on the other hand, is different).

Squall's without a doubt. While some others may look cooler, Squall's gunblade is much more iconic of FF8.

I'll look for my necklace tomorrow (I think I remember where I put it when I stopped wearing it). Just know that if you google for his necklace, there's TWO types. The official one is a long single chain that goes around the neck and clips to itself. There's also a 5th anniversary edition that looks more like a standard necklace. The game design is the former.
