Chinatown is done. all parts added to http://hosted.filefront.com/kn1ves29

Part 11 - [Kidnapping, Zhao's Warehouse] - (5:48)
Part 12 - [Johnny, Fu Syndicate] - (8:18)
Part 13 - [Giovanni Mansion] - (6:30)
Chinatown Total - (20:36)

Grand Total - 1:21:38

so nice when things go better than you originally think. part 13 starts with a nice glitch (i guess you'd call it a glitch) that i randomly found that worked 90% of the time. run up to the front door guard, punch him in the face, then start lockpicking. for some reason he cant hit a shot on me from 2 feet away. once inside, just run past everybody to another door to lockpick. once in that room theres a switch to open the secret door, but when you just run in like that and cause a ruckus the guy behind it opens it for you. yay little time savers. the first basement room you have to kill 6 zombies to trigger the one busting up the door. grabbed the saulocept which gives +1xp for every 3xp you get. after that wallstrafing on a 1 inch wide path is a nice little exploit, not sure you can call this one a glitch. the fight with the chang brothers goes really well. they only regroup in the middle once for their dragonball z style charge up which doesnt seem to really do anything, and the sword brother only gets to use his fireball attack once. by far my best fight with them, yet still room for some improvements. after checking in with the prince i get screwed by a glitch when the cab driver doesnt recognize me trying to talk to him until i back up for some reason. lost about 2-3 secs there, but well worth it for the good fight.

society of leopold up next. gonna be a bitch. coming to the home stretch. counting the society quest, 5 left to do. looks like under 2 hours is in the realm of posibilty.

I've asked mikwuyma about it and he said that disabling the autosaves and skipping the intro cutscene this way is fine. You should mention it in your comments though. Also, if you would've used autosaves instead of manual saving, you wouldn't get save penalties Wink

Another (Useless) thing. I almost found a huge sequence break in Santa Monica because I found a way to get to Bertram Tung's silo place immediately from the beginning of the game. The only problem is, is that Tung will only be spawned there when you get the objective to visit him so it's useless :-/

There's a timesaver I found though. When you're able to go to Therese Voerman the first time, a conversation will take place where you need to wait for quite some time. It's possible to activate the elevator (And thus also the conversation) without getting in the elevator. So activate the elevator, go through the door to the outside and back again into the building and then take the elevator and you can immediately talk to Therese. Would save a little bit of time Smiley

Also, when you need to get the Astrolite, you can jump over the fence next to the guy so you won't get that little conversation.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to add another little timesaver. When you get out of your appartment building the first time, a Bum will start to talk to you. When the game is loading, hold left+forward and when the loading has ended you'll walk into the cutscene trigger at the same time when the Bum starts talking to you, so then you get his conversation in the cutscene. This also saves a bit of time.

EDIT: And another little thing which you can maybe do in future segments. When you need to get out of computer screens, you can just press ESC instead of typing "quit" and pressing ENTER. This also counts for the stats screen when you've assigned points and need to press the "Accept" button, you can just press ESC. It's a little faster.

i didnt use autosaves because they got programmed lazily. sometimes during a mission they will get triggered, so if you retry the part you would assume the autosave would trigger at the same point but for some reason they dont consistently. would end up making things more annoying and i just didnt want to deal with them.

there are hardly any (if at all) sequence breaks that let you talk to characters before you should. i messed around with trying to get to bertram early too, but i used noclip to just fly to his silo to see if he was even there which of course he wasnt. they did a pretty good job stopping things like that from happening.

nice find on therese. would use that if i ever do another run. at the beach house i talked to the guy so he would swing at me and be out of the way instead of running over and hitting me while i try to get the astrolite. he still got me afterwards, but i could probably get past him with some luck. if i didnt have celerity i would definitely jump the fence instead. looking back at that segment i should have redone it. at the time i was pretty happy with it though for some reason. good find on the bum convo too.

dunno why but i thought you had to click accept for stat changes to stay. typing quit is one of those habits that form while playing a game. every time i do it i think to myself just hit esc but usually cant stop from doing it. i used quit during the elizabeth dane but i used esc on the internet cafe comp, so im trying =P

status update. ive got part14 done and encoded but im gonna hold off on giving details on it and uploading it for now because im going to try and finish the game by tuesday morning. the reason for this is the fall game lineup is about to hit its hot point for me and im gonna be spending most my time with new games =). quake wars, halflife2 ep2, portal, tf2, gears of war(pc), ut3 (i like shooters) will all be out within just over a month. so...because of that i will get to the end of this run sooner than if i kept up my current pace, but im still not gonna accept poor quality segments so dont worry about the quality of my effort. basically im just putting off encoding after each segment so i can spend more time on the next segment instead of waiting for the encoding to finish. ill do encoding overnight while i sleep and theres still 4 more segments to do i think, so look for a final status update on friday or saturday.
rabble
DONE!!! yays. gonna work on encoding the final parts over the next few days. more parts than i had planned for but in the end they were needed because of some of the randomness of this game. 21 parts total, so ends up being 8 over the endgame. did a rough estimate of the time and should be about 1:55:00 rounding up the seconds, just over 33 mins for the endgame. when i get everything encoded there will be a final update for this run with times for the finals parts as well as comments about them.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Looking forward to it! Congratulations.
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
Sweet. Sub 2h is a really fast time imho (since i needed like 5-6 hours if i was playing "fast" ^^)
Yeah congratulations!

Now I need to finish the game myself so that I can watch the rest of the speedrun Wink

final update. everything is encoded and the last 8 parts are uploaded to http://hosted.filefront.com/kn1ves29 . just adding hq versions because hardly anybody dled normal or low quality. first up are the times for the levels.

Part 14 - [Society of Leopold 1] - (1:22)
Part 15 - [Society of Leopold 2] - (6:37)
Part 16 - [Sabbat Hotel 1] - (3:42)
Part 17 - [Sabbat Hotel 2] - (5:00)
Part 18 - [Griffith Park] - (6:09)
Part 19 - [Bloodhunt, Taxi Ride] - (3:01)
Part 20 - [Temple 1] - (2:54)
Part 21 - [Temple 2] - (4:31)
Endgame Total - (33:16)

Game Total - (1:54:54) + Save Time Penalties (20 * .5 = 10 seconds) = 1:55:04

my timing might be off a little bit so if this ever gets approved by sda the final timing might change.

part 14 was a bitch. i couldnt figure out a good way to bust in through the front door and take out everybody without dying. so i settled on going in the back way. from here on guns take a bigger role in combat, so in retrospect maybe i should have focused more on guns, but at the same time i never really had enough money to buy any or ammo for them. guns + celerity = fun juggle time. this part is short because things kept going wrong after the first floor so when i finally did it well i wanted to keep it.

part 15 is more or less just my fight with bach. a little running beforehand but i just ignored all the other people. got a nice explosing boost while running at one part though. bach is an annoying prick. when you run up on him he blinds you and "teleports" and if you try and use guns he has a little spell he uses to reduce bullet damage he takes. i couldnt figure out any real good tricks to beating him so i just did what damage i could then headed to where he was gonna be next since he follows a very obvious pattern. i frenzied for the first time against him but it was worth it since i got in some damage and then automatically started running after him when he tped. the escape after killing him is easy. just touch the boat and you leave, so i jumped across the water to get to it.

part 16 i decided it was time to get some guns since i finally had a decent amount of money and some guns worth money that i could sell. the jaegerspas xv is my favorite gun. good ole auto-shotty. dont really use until the end of this part since i was trying to save ammo. the sabbat hotel is all about getting things to trigger, mostly guys smashing walls to reveal the path the take. i use the katana a lot because the third hit launches people and ends up clearing doorways, so that was very useful. the miniboss at the end is pretty simple, just fill em full of lead =).

part 17 starts with what looks like me being lost, but the truth is i couldnt figure out how to trigger the guy to bust open the door. it appears that it just takes some time for it to happen, dunno why or if i just did something in my game that glitched it. after that, just more running past people until i get to the second miniboss. i think youre supposed to stay downstairs and shoot up at him, but i just ran through the fire and unloaded point blank on him. after that its on to andrei the sabbat to finish him off. hes actually really easy with celerity and the auto-shotty. you cant hit him while he dives, but every time he surfaces i unload right in his face and take 1/4 of his life.

part 18 is one of my favorite parts of the game cuz you get to fight a werewolf. after one of them jumps nines and runs off with him, another one appears and you either have to survive the 3:30 until the train comes back or kill him. since this is a speedrun, i obviously had to kill him. beforehand though, back in downtown, i used celerity in the streets because i wanted to try it out and had masquerade violation to spare. anyway, back to the werewolf. all i had to do was turn on the power to the observatory and lure the wolf up to where the telescope opens, and then close the door on him.

part 19 is really easy with celerity(5). just run past all the people now hunting you and get to the cab. figured out you dont have to talk to jack beforehand so that saved a little bit of time. in the taxi is basically where you decide what ending you want. i picked siding with lacroix because you only have to fight the keui-jin and that is, from what i can tell, quicker than siding with the keui-jin and fighting lacroix. there are 3 other endings that all involve fighting them both. after talking to the prince i get a nice wad of cash for guns but just fill back up the autoshotty ammo and get the flamethrower. i also go to the haven downtown i got from lacroix for the first time and take the 3 free bloodpacks. then i head off the fight the kuei-jin. i feed on the 2 guys in the first courtyard to refill bloodpoints.

part 20 was really tough. all the guys outside react fairly randomly. i went to the side door of the main temple to try and make all the guys inside run over there so i could run around back to the front and head past where they were without having to fight because if you stop to fight here, you get mobbed. once inside, i feed on the first guy for bloodpoints, then run past everybody until the waterwheel room. i kill the one guy just to get all the other guys attention and move them away from the door. have to push the thing blocking the door first. after the door is open, i just run to a little push block to switch puzzle and open a hidden door. once through the door there are 3 guys with swords. i shoot 2 and feed on the last.

part 21 basically starts with a big puzzle. get the statues, put there where they belong, open a portal. there are some guys guarding them, but for the most part i try and ignore them so i can run right back out without the floor trap resetting that is in front of each of the statues. the final fight is pretty boring =/. just shoot a lot. flamethrower is good on the little things that form from ming-xiaos cut off tentacles. a good chunk of the fight i dont even use celerity because you can just run around behind her and she cant turn fast enough to hit you. after beating her, grab the sarcophogus key and sit back and watch the ending movie.

well, thats all folks. was pretty fun. dont think ill be starting another run on this anytime soon, but i might come back to it at some point with another clan. dont think a single segment run is plausible in this game with all the randomness and 100% run would require a lot of planning, but maybe if theres another game drought next summer ill pick this back up. im sure this run could be improved, but i honestly hope nobody tries to at this point because i would rather see a run with a new clan which require new strategies and new fighting styles.
...is good and for the win.
I watched the first five segments, and they looked damn slick. I have fond memories of this game, so you can bet I'm downloading the rest and watching. I'll give comments when I'm done.

Congrats!
100% runs=great to watch
I watched the entire thing and was thoroughly entertained. I'd definitely like to see different runs /100% for this game however and whenever they should perhaps come about.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Fantastic stuff, you oughta' be congratulated.

Looking forward to any future VTMB runs from you!
Just wanted to join the party ;-)

I've seen all parts of the speedrun and I'm impressed.
Great work and thanks for the fish.

Just for information purposes, I found a (Basically the only real one so far...) sequence break in this game but it would most probably be slower then the way you used now (Or joining Ming Xiao).

When you escape Santa Monica from the Blood Hunt, tell the Driver to go to the Anarchs (Which means killing both Ming Xiao and the Prince). Talk to Nines and get out of the building to the Driver again. Then tell him to go to your Haven and instead of walking through your front apartment door, take the ventilation shaft and go out through the front door of the building. Then you can immediately go to the Prince and finish the game without taking care of Ming Xiao Wink
rabble
that way doesnt work if you havent been to the haven beforehand because opening the vent takes you outside. so not very practical for a pure speed run, but if somebody was doing a 100% it would would work because they would need to go to the haven to check emails to get some quests. it wouldnt be faster than joining ming, so the only reason to do it in a speedrun would be to get a different ending.

Ah ok, I didn't check it in a new non-100% game.

I actually doubt a different ending would warrant a seperate category or something like that, because like 95% of the game will be the same, so a different slower ending isn't very likely to be done Wink

Well, they did indeed a good job against sequence breaking, I couldn't find anything else. If there only was a way to open the secret door in the graveyard immediately to go to Gary, that would save quite some time... Grin
rabble
yea, i didnt mean a diff ending should get a diff category. but if somebody doing a run just wanted to show the anarch ending because they felt like it, it wouldnt waste too much time in a 100% run.
I've found a huge sequence break in this game (Ah, finally a real sequence break ;)) which could possibly save about 35/40 minutes.

Here's a video of it on YouTube (Better click the fullscreen button otherwise it's a bit too dark to see I think), next to the video you can read some more information about it.

I certainly want to run this game sometime but I've got no idea when, I already have quite some stuff going on Wink So most likely it won't happen anytime soon. Feel free to start with it if you want Smiley

well, gave it a rough try with my character after part10 of my run and man is this gonna be annoying to do. first problem is gonna be not having access to the jaegerspas xv, which i wouldnt be able to get anyway cuz i dont have much money. after that, i only have 8 xp to allocate to firearms so i can try and use the utica, which i suspect wont do much damage with my ranged stats so low. add to that the problem of even getting into the temple because you cant use disciplines and this has become a real bitch. i dont really want to start completely over so i'm gonna have to think about this for a bit.
