done with all the missions in santa monica. havent gotten around to starting downtown yet. will probably get some of it done later tonight. total time in santa monica adding up times between initial load to save screen coming up for each segment (3 of them) is 16:48 by my count. could be a little off.

need somebody familiar with the game to look at that newer link for part 1 i posted a few days ago to check and make sure my edits are ok as they are. if not let me know what to change or i'll send you a raw if you're willing to edit so i know how to edit from now on.

one last thing; is there a general policy for games with passwords/passcodes in them? there are keypads and computers that you have to use. i should be able to get through the game without raising my hacking feat either way. i just need to know if i have to show where i get passwords/passcodes from.

for those with knowledge of the game here's where this applies. the passcode for the keypad in the museum mission is on a computer which requires hacking feat 1 (also in a desk, but its kind of out of the way). in this case, hacking itself isnt a problem, it will just cost time to do the hacking so it might be quicker to check the desk. also, in hollywood, the mission where you are looking for info on the snuff film is on a computer in the basement of the sin bin and the password is on a note in one of the rooms. you can bribe the owner for the info instead, but not sure if i'll have enough money ($500) by then. i think those are the only two instances on the main quest where passwords/passcodes arent given to you directly throught some kind of conversation. if any1 can think of somewhere else, please let me know.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
I've checked the new segment 1, looked fine to me mate.

Regarding passwords; as long as no cheating is involved (ie console commands) you can put in passwords off memory or whatever is faster for your game.

Really looking forward to you upping your current progress.

update time again. i'm done with downtown now, so first 2 cities are all clear. uploaded the hq version of all i've got encoded so far here: http://hosted.filefront.com/kn1ves29 . encoding the last part of downtown right now, so it will probably get uploaded in the morning. normal and low quality avi and mp4 versions will get added eventually if you dont want hq.

[missions] included in each segment and (times) in each segment are below. as before, times are from save loaded to save screen coming up, so final times could be off by a second or two in each part.

Part 1 - [Beach House] - (4:26)
Part 2 - [Ocean House] - (6:03)
Part 3 - [Diner, Sabbat Warehouse] - (6:19)
Santa Monica Total - (16:48)

Part 4 - [Elizabeth Dane] - (8:36)
Part 5 - [Grout's Mansion] - (7:29)
Part 6 - [Museum] - (3:34)
Downtown Total - (19:39)

total for first two cities is (36:27). i'm pretty happy with this time so far. better than I thought it would be considering how much running around between missions there is. probably another update tomorrow with info on how i plan to run hollywood.

hollywood run plan

hollywood has lots of running back and forth. the first mission about the snuff film is basically, go here, get info, go there, get info, go back to start, get info, go here, get tape, go back to start, watch tape, tape missing some parts, go find full version.

the second half about the snuff film actually has some action, but cuz this is a speedrun i'm probably gonna skip it all. have to go to the sin bin to get info about where the snuff film was made. i dont have enough money to convince the owner to talk about it, so i'll use his comp for the info. more go here get info etc stuff. end up at the internet cafe with a key for their back room. monsters come out, run past em, find video. need lockpick 10 to skip a part, so i max out security skill (with no points to spare) and use blood bluff to get it and take the tape. head back to start to watch the tape, get info on where it was made, go there.

yay, first boss battle, sorta. just have to run through a house to get to the basement and do the fight. not much of a fight really. the guy just summons little demon guys over and over, 3 max at a time so gonna try ignoring them since he'll just call out more, and teleports around a bit. would be nice to have celerity(4), but at this point i dont see a way to do that. at any rate, i'll be using celerity the whole time to slow him down so i can get max damage using unarmed fighting. thinking about using potence too, but not sure how much blood that will use at this point and i dont wanna waste my blood packs if i dont have to. after beating him, its on to the sewers.

ahh, the sewers, the bane of all vampire players. most people dont like this part of the game and i'm not too fond of it either, mostly because its easy to lose track of where you are and get lost. i'm sure by the time i get done with this i'll not want to do this mission for a month. theres a lot to it so i'll hit the main points. find a release valve for the water, use it (duh), get out the water before being chopped to bits by spinning blades, find the pump room, turn off some shorting electricity, turn on the pump, swim to a room that fills with water, find a key, use it to open a passage to where the nosferatu hideout is, go find gary who is the whole reason for being in hollywood.

lots of running here. if i can keep this city close to 30 minutes i'll be very happy. hopefully i can do this in a week like i did with downtown, but no guarantees on this one. will post updates here when done: http://hosted.filefront.com/kn1ves29
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Awesome stuff mate.

I also hate the sewer area, it's not that difficult really, especially as a Malk or Bru, but it never ends! Heh.

Downloading Part 6 currently. Really enjoyed the rest.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
How's progress mate? I'm checking daily here Grin

mini update. i'm almost done with hollywood. i originally planned to have the horror house, fight with the tzimisce andrei, and all the sewers in the same segment. instead, i had some good fortune and had a really good fight with andrei, so i just finished the first part of the sewers cuz i didnt wanna chance messing up and having to redo the fight. i'm also behind on encoding, but i'll get that done tonight, along with the last part of hollywood which i'm gonna start after i'm done here. not gonna give times yet, but again its better than i thought i would do. probably another post from me soon with the full roundup of hollywood.

hollywood is done. encoding most of it right now. will be uploaded as it completes. only part 7 is done, so thats going up right now here: http://hosted.filefront.com/kn1ves29 . [edit: parts 8 - 10 added]

Part 7 - [First Tape] - (6:30)
Part 8 - [Second Tape] - (5:25)
Part 9 - [King's Way, Sewers 1] - (4:03)
Part 10 - [Sewers 2, Nosferatu Hideout] - (8:37)
Hollywood Total - (24:35)

grand total so far is around (61:02). still 2 sections left to go, chinatown and the endgame. update again tomorrow with run plan for chinatown.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Good stuff again. Only thing i'm noticing that could be improved is your looking at the ground when running, isn't the best thing to look at as a viewer Tongue and the luck factor when running into NPC's and sometimes having to double back and go around them.

looking down cuz framerate suffers when i look up. only seems to happen in hollywood. dunno why. my system should be strong enough to handle it and details arent on high or anything, but theres not much to look at in the streets anyway. i look up when inside places. npc encounters are shitty sometimes. sorry, but i dont feel like trying 20 times to get around them without incident =P. usually if ive left that stuff in its because another part of the run ive done better than i normally do, so it evens out.

ok, time for chinatown run plan. first mission is saving a guys daughter cuz he has info (trying to find missing nosferatu). before that though, i head to the ramen shop where yukie is (part of a non-main mission) and feed on and kill her. dont need the blood that much, but i get a free katana when she dies before i would normally be able to get one from an enemy. for saving the girl its just run in, kill some guys, get her out. the guy doesnt have the info i need, directs me to a warehouse.

next, head off to see the warehouse guy. tells me guy named johnny might know where the nos is, get amushed, just run out without killing anybody. find johnny, his boss has the nos, kill johnny, head off for boss. the boss puts you through some tests. beat em, kill him, get key, release nos, delete data on vampires, leave. gary tells where the sarcophogus is.

head to giovanni mansion. still trying to figure out which way i want to try getting in. can either persuade some people which will require spending xp, or try and get in the back which will take longer. once in, head through basement, kill zombies, find sarcophogus, fight second bosses. two guys to fight, probably gonna need celerity(4) but havent decided if i wanna do this either.

should be 4 parts for this city, and around 30 mins again. i'll try posting updates for each part this time since im getting close to the end.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Always good to see a run taking place so fluently. Usually it's 'going to do this' then no video for six months. I like your update rate. Smiley

Ever thought of doing a 100% or other clan run after you're done with this?
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
Never ask the Master of something new, before he didn't told you to ask Wink

@ kn1ves: really nice. Its amazing how some people can finish a game in such a short time, while i wouldn't even be nearly as fast, even when i would cheat.

Keep it up.
rabble
i've thought of doing another clan, but dunno which one i would pick at this point. as far as 100% run goes, hadnt really given that much thought, but you never know. would take a lot of planning. at this point i think a single segment run based on my current run would be something i would attempt before a 100% run.

first part of chinatown is done. uploaded to the same place as before.

Part 11 - [Kidnapping, Zhao's Warehouse] - (5:48)

this was quite possibly the most annoying section i have had to do so far because little things kept going wrong to ruin it. first, during the little cutscence after meeting ming xiao, randomly one the guys running would stop and i would have to wait for him to start going again. then, once inside the lotus, more little shit kept going wrong. either one of the guys on the top floor would run away from me and i would have to chase him halfway across the floor, or kiki would get stuck in the closet after letting her out, or the lock on the door would fall in just the right place and she couldnt run over it, or best of all after killing all the guys it would say i was still in combat and therefore couldnt talk to kiki to let her out.

aside from that, went ahead and got a katana (yay) and increased my melee stats because of that. the katana is nice because you can hit people on the ground, which you cant do unarmed. in the warehouse i was gonna shoot out a window in the office and jump out, but i forgot for some reason. instead i go out and run over the stacked up boxes which turned out quicker, so yay unintended improvements. anyway, glad this part is over.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Cheers once again for the update, getting close now! Cheesy

heh, nice little game glitches. first the random guy flying over to where he should be and then the skating guy all in one shot. only other obvious npc glitch i can think of is in one of my hollywood parts (dont remember, too lazy to check) when i feed on a guy outside isaacs jewerly shop, i hit the end feed key right when i drained all the guys blood and he just disappeared. im sure there were others, but that one kinda stands out to me at least.

update: low and normal quality versions have been added here http://hosted.filefront.com/kn1ves29

Part 12 - [Johnny, Fu Syndicate] - (8:18)

used some xp on firearms cuz this is the first mission ive actually needed guns on and without upgrading it takes more shots to destroy the electric thingys. some of the doors during the tests open right away, some take a long time. didnt seem to be triggers for the longer ones so have to wait them out. started a really cool sword juggle on a guy right at the 6:00 mark. that made me smile. at the club when you go in to see johnny the game moves you in, otherwise i would just run in and bite him. the end of the syndicate part after i let out bar(r)abus was not as smooth as could be but i did all the tests a lot faster than normal, so i decided to keep this. in case you're wondering, i called him bar(r)abus because the game cant decide how to spell it. when you pick up the key its called "barrabus' cell key," but when you free him a message pops up saying freed barabus. yay lazy speel checking =). added high, normal, and low quality versions all at once this time, but i still recommend hq.

I'm playing this game lately and it's very nice, I'm in Downtown after the Museum part at this moment. Of course I try to complete every objective and explore around, and the occasional trick hunting a bit Wink

Your run looks pretty good, although there are some bumps\stuck-ups here and there. I also noticed that you can straferun\strafejump and wallstrafe in this game, why aren't you using that to move faster? Especially wallstrafing makes you move quite a bit faster but of course the walls aren't always completely straight. You can even use an object and push it against a wall and then it can boost you away although this is a bit random to perform, but the boost can be quite huge. You can also use an object to wall climb to get great heights but I haven't found any useful place for it yet (For example, I was able to get over the main gate to get in front of the church in Downtown. I could even get on the building of the Anarchs club where Nines is located ;)).

Another thing I want to ask, in your videos I see that you have no auto saves. When I'm playing, the game almost constantly (After loading\transitions) auto saves and I can't seem to find any way of turning it off. Also, I can't seem to skip that first long cutscene, is there some specific button I need to press? I just read it could have something to do with the resolution being used, I'll check that in a moment. I'm using the latest official game version by the way.

normal strafejumping doesnt seem to do too much for speed. the jump feels too high, to me at least, for it to be used often. combined with celerity though it seems to have a positive effect, but cant use that in the cities cuz of masquerade violations. parts 9 and 10 in the sewers is the best place to use it cuz it helps skip lots of enemies and is worth using blood points on. wallstrafing on the other hand seems to be pretty useful, but at the same time there arent many places in the main quest where it is useful because a lot of walls have things sticking out of them. honestly, i hadnt really noticed it until a few days ago, but the museum is the only place i have already done where it would make a major difference in my opinion. wallboosting, as far as i can tell, doesnt seem practical to plan on using during a run unless you can provide video of doing it during one of the main quests. to turn off autosaves and skip the opening cutscene make a file called autoexec.cfg and put it in gamedirectory/vampire/cfg and add the lines autosave_on "0" and vchar_skip_intro "1" to it.

TheVoid: 2007-09-27 01:06:32 pm
Normal strafejumping still feels a bit faster to me if performed correctly, I haven't actually timed it though.

Wallstrafing is definitely quite a bit faster (You can even hear it from the footsteps ;)). There are some walls on the main quest route that could be used, and especially the Museum is a good spot yes. You could combine wallstrafing along with a bit of straferunning to circumvent those things sticking out of walls.

You would need a straight\flat wall part because the trick makes you boost alongside the wall, but I think it's not really worth the effort on the street parts and it's pretty tricky to do. I actually can't really think of any good place where you could use it...

Hmm, is that legal to use? Since you're actually altering the game somewhat. I think turning off the autosaves is legal because it doesn't affect the gameplay, but I'm not really sure about skipping the intro. Because the cutscenes are counted in a speedrun where you can save everywhere, so the first cutscene should be included too, I think. Especially considering that the game originally is supposed to have that cutscene included. Hmm, maybe ask mikwuyma about it?
Thanks for these things though because I was getting tired of all the autosaves and the long intro Grin

Oh and about changing resolutions to skip the intro, that's utter nonsense as far as I can tell Wink

from the rules page http://speeddemosarchive.com/rules.html
Cutscenes: If a game lets you skip cutscenes, then you must do so. This is not a cutscene and/or plot site. Runners who have played a game dozens of times to do a run don't want to sit through cutscenes. Unfortunately, some games are lazily programmed and you can't skip cutscenes. In this case the runner goes insane as they count for his or her time.

i think it should be ok in this case since going into the config is the only way to skip it without using an unofficial patch. if not, i do have the intro with the character i used saved so i could always pull that out if i had to. i just made my character, recorded the full intro, then went back and turned off intro, made a character with the same stats and recorded again with the intro turned off .

Yes, but the thing is, the cutscene isn't skipable originally in the game. You're adding a line to the config file to make it skipable. But originally it's not possible to skip it.

You took some nice precaution by also recording the intro Smiley But now the question is, if the intro needs to be included, will your recorded intro somehow be counted as an extra segment or is it allowed to add it to the first segment?

Hmm, I think we need a certain mikwuyma in here... I'll contact him on IRC and I shall ask about this matter to clarify it a bit Wink

"For games without timers, a simple measure of real time is used. When the player first gets control of the game's character, timing begins." from http://speeddemosarchive.com/faq.html

you dont gain control until after the first cutscene out in the alley with jack, so shouldnt be an issue. having the intro or not in this case doesnt affect time because while you do have to pick stats beforehand, you dont have control of the character at any point during that. also, as far as i can tell there arent limitations on custom configs for pc games. if there were, the half life 2 run would be void because they use a macro for their bunnyhopping and i also seriously doubt the quake runs were done without custom cfgs.
