Waiting hurts my soul...
The only thing about newer games is that the length is usually longer because of cutscenes and such. Do you mean 90 minutes total, or a 90 minute run in the case of an in-game timer?

I'm also getting the feeling that I'm going to have to actually play through and become proficient myself in order to determine the length is under the time limit. I was hoping to avoid that somewhat.

Uh, I guess I was thinking 90 minutes total, but I'm not going to get too finicky about that.  Just use your best judgment.  If it's reasonable to think that a run will take 90 minutes or less, that's good enough for me, even if it in fact takes longer than that due to misjudgment or things like cutscenes.  Hopefully it doesn't, but I'm not going to bust balls about it.

Yeah, I wondered about all this too for the game I am supposed to send.  I hope reasonable estimates are fine, especially because it sounds like a lot of people are purchasing games to send rather than sending from their own collection.  I'm sure at least a few people are buying games that they have not themselves beaten, so estimates are about the only thing we can ask.

Again, it's up to each person individually, really.  I bought Plok for romscout because it would've cost the same amount to buy a new copy as it would to send mine.  Plus I want the game for my collection.  I will work on the game so that I can be a verifier too; he mentioned doing a similar thing for Mohawk, although I'm not sure if he was joking or not.  At least that way though, there's a chance of the runs making it through verification.  But if you want to play the game yourself and beat it to get a better time estimate, go ahead.  If you just want to guess at the duration of the game, go ahead.  Same with verifying.  There's no real guidelines except that you have to speed run whatever you're sent.  ^_^
that Metroidvania guy
if i'm going to force someone to speed run mohawk and headphone jack, i'm at least going to do them the justice of being eligible to verify; it's only fair for whatever games people send

also i am not going to immediately be looking to do multiple exchanges from this, mostly because i'm so invested in sotn right now and have other runs (mmx being the main one, i'd say) that i need to get good enough at to make an impression at the next marathon. however, i will put a link to my backloggery and all that jazz once it's fully updated (haven't touched it in ages).

also plok run is gonna rock

The verification point is a good one.  If what I purchase for someone is not a game I've played all the way to the end, then I'll be sure to beat it before I send it.

But my main point was that the time estimates don't have to be exact.  Even if I've beaten a game, I may not know how long it will take to speedrun it.

EDIT:  To post below, yeah I know, but it'd probably be easier just to beat it while I still have it and then send it, instead of making the receiving party send it back my way.  But your way would work, too.

You don't have to finish it before sending.  Wink  Just finish it in time for verification.  Aka, someday.  Haha.
When are we starting this? I need a new project =P
I haven't been without a game I've been working on since I joined this site.

If you like, I'm up for trading. PM me if you like, although I can't start a long game until January just to warn you.

I might need to get in on this. I'll be a little picky though...

GB, GBC, N64
No racing, RPGs, FPSs, or fighting games

So, basically only platformers and beat'em ups?
that Metroidvania guy
cmon, you know neskamikaze does puzzle games

not so many poverty puzzle games though... pretty sure there's at least a couple out there though

Oh man, a poverty puzzle game.  Talk about a tough find.
For real. Plus, a poverty puzzle game that's speedrunnable. Even further limits things. There's gotta be some Tetris rip-off that fits the bill lol.
i'd recommend loopz if it had an ending, but alas :[

i think i could find one though if i get paired with nes d:
Look into it!
I might could do two games. I've successfully worked on more than one game before.

edit: can you really only play those three systems you mentioned? :[
Bring it on

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Finally updated the first post. Added the stipulation that we're not trading until the marathon, because most of us will be too busy until then.

A couple of things:

A lot of people are adding no RPGs as a stipulation, but I didn't add it when you were listed in the first post because I already mentioned RPGs being a bad genre for this trade.

You guys should choose partners yourselves. If you want to trade with more than one partner, then be my guest, but that also means you're going to run more than one game.

I'm trading with Vorpaledge because I guessed his game within 5 minutes. It's not really a poverty game, but it sucks and the controls are definitely a battle that will make your blood boil.

P.S. If you choose UltraJMan, you are going up against a poverty titan.

The Speedrunning Teacher
Okay, finally made a list of all the games I own.  It's in an Excel file for now, until Backloggery opens registration again or I find another suitable website to make the list on.

I have a few games in mind to send someone, but it occurred to me that one of these might be sent by another person in a different exchange.

I know, I know.  What are the ODDS that someone will send a game that someone else is sending in a separate exchange (or I suppose it's also entirely possible that two people in the SAME exchange might send the same game .. though even less likely).  But, when I discovered that one of my friends actually owns a fairly well known awful NES game, I thought about sending it and wondered whether someone else out there had the same idea.

Again, I really, really don't expect this to be a problem, but what solutions for this might there be?  It's pretty much mandatory that we announce the games we have chosen at some point in the process well before submitting a run of the game to SDA.  So, what are our options?  Maybe 1: display the names of the games we intend to send, beforehand.  The problem with this is that it takes out much of the allure behind this entire enterprise by eliminating the element of surprise.  2:  Ditto, except display the names after we receive the games (I expect that this is the current plan).  Then, there'd just be the minor inconvenience of having to send something back after the fact, if indeed someone sent the same game and at the same time.  3: Have a supervisor over PJ's entire quid pro quo idea who is told about the details of the exchange once they have been settled.  For instance, two people choose to send games to each other.  Then, they decide when this will be done and whether they would like their games returned, and whatever other details are relevant to the exchange itself.  Then, they pick the games.  The members would then alert the neutral party to these roughly three bits of information.  (This neutral party might make a list of all games currently in the exchanging phase, just for reference, but otherwise would not have to really do anything)

Again, I KNOW this is not a big deal and does not require a lot of consideration or debate.  Just throwing this out there.  I'm fine with just announcing the games after the fact, by the way.  The odds that someone will be inconvenienced by this is terribly small.  At worst, I imagine that someone might say, "Aw darn.  I was going to send that game, sometime."  But, it doesn't hurt to consider our options.
The Speedrunning Teacher
I like your third idea, but I'd like to change it a little.

Basically, all that the supervisor/monitor would need is to know what game is going to be sent and to whom before the game is sent.  The monitor would then give a 'go/no go' message to the senders if the game being sent has not already been claimed.  The monitor wouldn't need to announce it until they received notification that the runner(s) have received the game(s).  They'd just announce who is going to swap games at first, and then later announce the games swapped.  This way you can keep the element of surprise, while still making sure that we don't get duplicates.

If no one else wants to be the supervisor/monitor, I'll do it.

Yea I agree with idea 3.  Good thinking!  I was wondering this myself at one point.  Smiley

Edit:  I'd be fine with being supervisor/monitor/minotaur also, if Zyre gets cold feet.  Wink

Bump!

Anyways, I guess Zenic and I have decided that I'm going to be the "neutral third party" person.  Basically, this is how I'd like to see things work out here:

-If you are not already listed in the first post and you want to be involved with this, please post saying so and The Big Sexy will hopefully add you to the first post.
-Everybody else, once you are ready to exchange, find someone in the first post who you'd like to exchange with (for example, maybe PAL runners want to exchange with each other), and contact that person.
-Once you find a partner, just work out whatever details you want.  Clarify some of your preferences, maybe pry a little bit to see if your game would work for them.  I don't really care.  Just figure out all the details.
-When you both know what games you want to send to each other, contact me somehow and let me know.  I'm on IRC very frequently (nick = PJ, if you couldn't guess), or just send me a PM.  The only reason to contact me is so that I can make sure nobody is sending a duplicate game.  That's it.  I have no other role in this entire process.  I won't approve/deny your choices or give advice.  I'm just here to make sure nobody sends the same game.

Very simple.  Smiley
Waiting hurts my soul...
I've already told you the game I'm sending neskamikaze. I'm not listed in the first post, but mainly because I'm kind of a wildcard in game choices.

In addition to the game I'm sending neskamikaze, I have a good idea for another N64 game (already mentioned to PJ and some others on IRC), and a PS1 game if anyone is interested in trading. I would still need to play through both of them, and I have this trade going, so it wouldn't be a fast turn around.
Is PJ
Alright, Zenic and neskamikaze have both told me the games they plan to send to each other and at this point they are both unique picks (more unique than you know, hahahaha).  Feel free to send your games whenever you're ready!

D:
I can't accept games in this thread because I don't even really have time for my Breath of Fire run.  I also know that most people here are busy practicing for the marathon.

However, I stand by what I said before.

Free shipping to anyone who will run it + a free dollar to anyone who can tell me how to get it to run. Sad

Anyone with a Master System, I have the perfect game for you! I know Breakdown has one but I don't know how willing he is to participate in this in general, so if there's any other SMS owners out there, I'm going to be your trade target.

Of note is that I'll have an NTSC Genesis by the time this happens (though shipping will still suck).
