I can sing well, and would be perfectly willing to. I'd have to practice a bit to get my (pseudo) operatic voice back up to snuff, but I'd have to learn the songs anyway.
Get me on Skype during the marathon and I will do ALL THE SINGING!
I definitely approve of this idea. I'll also sing if it's donated for, lol.
Also, decided to give in and grab Dissidia off PSN with some birthday money I got. It was mainly because I was starting to get too annoyed with the loading times during practice (Crisis Core is enough to break a person for loading times). Only done a couple runs and so far I've dragged Cloud down a minute from my old PB (mind you I got stupidly trolled by Sephiroth) and Zidane down 5 1/2 (31:48 Cloud, 35:14 Zidane). I'll go through and get all 10 done again soon but yeah, PSN version of the first game is an absolutely huge improvement (in comparison to the run length). Besides, this helps if I ever plan to actually go ahead and do full runs of this game :P. This is on top of some slight route changes I recently made to make sure I'm a bit higher level by the end to make the bosses... safer...? Well, maybe not safer but hopefully less trolly.
Note I only have the PSN version of the first game not the second. $40 for both is pushing it (and not just for money, for space on my PSP xD). Second game is still very much in though.
And I guess I should probably talk Crisis Core. I had a stupidly good run going Sunday that died after Sephiroth thanks to my computer. I was something like 3 minutes ahead. I'll be going for the record again probably at the end of next week (or just the end of January in general). Will be grinding out marathon route runs starting mid-February though.
I'll give a more detailed post in a bit. For now: I need someone to confirm / refute that Interlude (that Ess is playing) is PSP-only.
If so, does someone have a PSP with Interlude on it that can do video output (so, as I understand it, only a PSP-3000?). Also, I'm thinking of moving Interlude to be between Dissidia and CC, because switching the video setup between the PSP and the other systems is going to take a while, and I never realized before that Interlude is PSP-only.
Essentia: what kind of PSP are you playing Interlude on?

I have FFIV Complete Collection (aka has Interlude) though I only have the UMD version. I can bring it up with me if no one has the PSN version. Though I'll have to find room to re-install that game on my memory stick. (Which shouldn't be too hard, I'm sure I can find something on there that shouldn't be on there)
Hey, pretty new to the community, though. If you'll ask, I played I, II, III, IV (Favorite), IV The After Years, V, VI, VII, VII Crisis Core, VIII, IX, X, X-2 (Ugh), XI (Oh, yay), XII (Yiazmat? Ugh), XIII (Ermm), XIII-2 (Time Travel?) Tactics (2nd Favorite) Tactics Advance, Tactics Advance 2, Revenant Wings and Dissidia 1 and 2012 Duodecim. (Only one I didn't play is that DS Rhythm game).
I have a psp 3000 I would give to you guys, but it's bricked. >.< I'm not sure how to unbrick it. I had to buy a new psp because of this. =( If someone know how to unbrick it, tell me and I'll let you guys use it.
Hey Poxnor I think I have sent the last package out to you today, unless you think the collectors edition strat guide for xiii-2 is good prize. The box should arrive in 2 days according to the Post Office lady. So keep an eye out for it.

Sorry I took so long to reply to this. I have the UMD version of FFIV complete, which includes Interlude, and I was planning to bring my PSP 3000 and composite AV cables (same thing I used to run KH:BBS for the first SGDQ). I'd actually prefer if you moved Interlude to a different spot in the schedule, so that I don't have to do my two games back-to-back.
BTW, I still need to make a list of everything I'll be bringing, as soon as I get it figured out.
Hey, so I've been a long time speed run watcher. I started watching sig play SM64 but quickly moved to watching some of my favorite games: The Final Fantasy games. Now, I've known about this marathon through word of mouth, but I have never checked the forum until today. Turns out its in my hometown XD Never knew you were from Edmonton Poxnor.
So with that said, I would LOVE to volunteer to help with just about anything, be it helping out with the driving to and from the airport (I have a car, so couldn't take more than 4), or cooking/getting food or even just console cable management (I saw what they had going on at AGDQ... almost made me cry the jungle of cords going on). I'd say I could offer a little meaningful commentary on FFIX (at least the first half) but its probably a bit late, and it looks like there's plenty of people for that.
Anyways, like I said, I would love to help out in anyway I can. If not, I'll just drop by and watch... it'd be nice to meet you guys since I watch a lot of your guys streams on Twitch.
Oh I almost forgot to mention, if there IS interest in Jasper... I frequent the place so I could definitely make suggestions of what to see/do and/or show some things.
Edit: Did you ever figure out the sound stuff? Becasue I have some knowledge in that area if you still need someone to help with that. Sorry if this has already been sorted but... 20 pages is agonizing when you are looking for 1 specific bit of information.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Poxnor has been running mad with getting the charity information sorted and tech support is a big issue that needs to be covered.
So here is the breakdown of what the equipment listed on page 11 is for.
The listed mix board is PROBABLY a little over the top... however I don't know how they used it. You can get a comparable one with fewer inputs for cheaper. You really only need 2 mic inputs and 1 other... I think? THey would have had the two mics going into the mixer, then the mixer into the computer via usb. I don't know how they did the sound from the console because there are many possible outputs and only xlr or 1/4" inputs on the mixer (actually I think there is a R/L RCA input too). Two things may have been done... required all sound outputs to be an accepted type. In this case, if it did have an RCA in, probably RCA. The other thing may have been they bypassed the mixer with the game sound and went directly through the cap card... would have been much more handy for HDMI inputs. I HIGHLY doubt this one though. Infact im pretty sure this isnt the case because they were able to play with the game volume so it had to go through the mixer.
Anyway, the sound from the two mics and the console go into the mixer, get mixed by the operator, muting the appropriate ones at appropriate times, changing volumes, etc. and then out to the computer where it is streamed via... probably XSplit.
The two different mics are for two different things. The first is for a singler person saying stuff... say the announcer. The second is to pick up the sound int he room... player, commentators, etc. The blue yeti is a good mic... if they were having problems with it it might have been the mixers fault for not compressing? I can't say, I didnt hear.
I'm sure you can guess what the cables and mic stands are for...
The filter/shield is to reduce the annoying sounds that you dont want to hear. Things like wind blowing in the mic... you know.
Headphones are for the mixer who needs to hear how it all sounds without screwing up the stream by turning that on and getting weird, annyoing echo. I've got a good, but rediculously overpriced, pair of Bose headphones that would work.
Now... as for what I can supply... I have been playing around with the idea of getting a mixer for a while so this may be a good excuse to get one, if no one has one. XLR cables are fairly cheap and no problem. I DO NOT have mics. And I'd rather not get them, I don't typically have a need for decent mics, like the kind you probably want. You may be able to rent them if you need to. I can check with Long&McQuade and Axe music and a few others if you want. Likely if you rent the XLR cables will come with. Possibly rent the filter as well. Likes I said, I have a pair of headphones that would work for the application.
Let me know if you want me to chase anything for this, I'm more than happy to.
Edit: I derped. The yeti is a good microphone but it is a USB microphone... it won't connect to the mixer. Might be why it was public enemy #1 before? Now if you had a yeti pro....
Edit 2: After digging around I learned something new today. USB mixers don't only OUTPUT to computers via USB... but also receives from the computer via usb and mixes the sound in. I may need to... dig around a little more to see if you can input and output at the same time, but you may potentially be just fine using the blue yeti.
I'm going to be mailing three out to you soon Poxnor. I may be able to do a few more, but it depends on how fast I can get my next order done. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this. =) It means a lot to me.
Wow, have I ever fallen behind on keeping the first post up to date and responding to posts. Sorry, everyone. Not only was real life intervening, but I was trying to go through a bunch of material from JDRF these past few days as well. Well, to heck with excuses and my crappy marathon organizing; let's get to it!
First off: I've cut off registrations. I'm sorry to everyone who was interested and maybe thinking of coming to commentate. Quite frankly, my house is going to be full. I never expected the level of interest in C4L that I've received (this problem is a good one to have, mind you!). However, there are exceptions here: there have been two people speaking to me via PM/Twitch/whatever who have been seriously thinking for a long time about coming and possibly commentating, but who have just been working out money/time/etc. issues. Because you have been seriously trying to plan to come for so long, you are more than welcome to sign up (the original 15 February 2013 deadline still applies, for logistical and planning purposes; and, if you don't know who you are, feel free to PM me). For everyone else: sorry, but my home is only so big, and it's much tinier than Essentia's for SGDQ. For the exceptions to this rule: I'll just give you puwexil's sleeping spot, since he won't need it
Regarding the donation tracker: I had an amazing idea for writing a new donation tracker that solved all the concurrency issues we hit during SGDQ (and there were lots of them -- having a DBMS backend doesn't magically solve front-end concurrency problems when you have lots of users doing the same thing). Then, real life hit. Enough said. My one-man Rambo programming-show isn't happening, and we need to start thinking about how to track donations for this marathon. Thoughts and insight are appreciated (can we adapt the donation tracker used for AGDQ 2013?). This is a serious question that needs to be answered; it's not one of my meandering thoughts that I post on these boards.
FFgamer86 and Mikadia: I've cut Omega Weapon from the FF8 donation incentives (let me know if you want him back in, but I have no indication that anything marathon-reliable has been found). I have added singing Eyes On Me *shudder*. I'll probably plan to take an obviously-timed washroom break. On the other side of the house.
Brossentia: Best of luck in your academic career. May it not rot you and turn you into the horrible, dejected person that I am today.
Essentia/FF6 fans: As stupid as it sounds, I'd love to add the voice descriptions to the parts in the FF6 bidding war (e.g., bass / tenor / etc.). Can anyone provide me with the "ranges" (sorry that I don't know the proper word) for the FF6 opera parts? PS: the singing isn't happening over Skype (sorry). It's going to be in-person; and, someone will need to pre-dial 9-1- in case Essentia's baby tries to escape the room and shoots out of her at mach speed.
rinimt/Essentia: I'm guessing for a game as short as Interlude, it doesn't matter if it's on PSN or on UMD? (Like 1-2 minutes difference? i.e., who cares?).
rinimt: I know you've made the case before for including Duodecim in the bidding war, but I'm really starting to think that a Dissidia bidding war among the available chapters would be simpler for the donors, and easier for you to prepare for. I dunno.
Lag: So long as your PSP can use composite cables to hook into my streaming setup (built last weekend), we're all good.
lizzie241: Wow, more prizes? Thank you so much! I'm not even sure what to expect this time (it might have been lost in the flood of messages), but I'll keep an eye out for it.
Essentia: Sure thing. I was hoping to adjust the schedule anyways, and now not making the pregnant lady sit in one spot for seven hours has given me reason to do so.
Brettatron: I've added you to the private planning thread (please post the requisite info there). As you can see in the first post, there is a fee for people to attend if they're not commentators or players. However, if you're willing to do YEG runs, I'm more than happy to waive that fee and invite you to hang for the marathon (seriously, anyone who's been to Edmonton knows WTF I'm talking about here -- welcome to the Leduc International Airport, and all those jokes). Think about it there are any games you want to learn so that you can commentate.
Brettatron: Thank you for finally explaining to me what all those different things are for However, for the smaller size of this marathon, the Yeti might be all that we need. There won't be more than, say, six people in the streaming room at one time anyway. I wouldn't run out and buy anything for this marathon. I've been testing some different Yeti setups during my streams, and apparently they've all been good. So, hopefully that holds for the marathon.
Mikadia: That's an amazing drawing! I couldn't help but whistle the sweet melody happening in the background during that scene when seeing your drawing. Thank you so much for your art. I've added it to the first post.
Yes, it really is a rediculous place for an airport. But the drive isnt so bad, plus meeting people and being helpful... yay. I really am eager to help out =P
As for any games I may want to provide commentary for... I can do FFIX. I don't speed run any games myself, but I have watched Caracarn attempt that one enough times to have a good understanding of it. A little focused studying and I'd be fine. I'd also be ok with learning FFXIII, since it looks like no one is providing commentary for that.
You're probably right, the Yeti will be fine for this size. I think a mixer is a good idea anyway, but that is something we can discuss.
