Within reason. "Hi, I'm the organizer of the 'SDA Loves Charity X Marathon', and we were wondering if we could run a marathon for you, Charity X?" comes off as a little...weird
Clever is better than pandering. Hence why "Chocobos Unlimited" was just a joke
I like the Word Crystals at least. Could play around that word?
EDIT: I can give better estimates for Mystic Quest Any% Id say 3:00-3:15 and 100% 3:30-3:45. It depends on RNG and The Any% can be as low in the 2:45 range with good luck. The 100% is a more consistent route since Pazuzu luck doesnt mean as much in 100%,
I've been doing some practice on FF1, and for some reason my times have been getting slower. I blame Banon luck. The closest I've come to my estimate is the 2:22 last night, which included three game overs to Chaos. It also had some really stupid routing errors (had to backtrack to Elfland to get Gold Needles, forgetting that Marilith is a fiend that needs to die, etc) which practice will eliminate. Up until running this version, I've never forgotten to talk to Unne before, and since I've started practicing with this version I've forgotten that 3 times.
I'm convinced that now I can suggest another donation incentive with this game. There's 5 total cutscenes you can skip (opening intro, bridge scene, canal destruction, airship acquired, and epilogue), though I would suggest only 3 of them be incentives if endings are going to be skipped. Canal destruction is literally a 7-second skip, so I wouldn't want that to be a donation incentive, but the others are fair game.
I can go if you want 100% sure. Source of travel is I catch a ferry (live on Vancouver island), and greyhound to alberta from bc, and or my friend may drive me. i am a evening night person, only FF game i can run is 9, Usually currently average 9:29-9:36 cause im bad at RNG. also If the set up is like other sda marathons i'd like a word before I do anything.
Err, sorry CrystalBeauty, but I don't understand what you were trying to say in your post. What do you mean by the setup being like other SDA marathons? If you'd like to say something (is that what you mean by wanting a word?), please feel free...
We already have two players on FF9, but I'd invite puwexil and Essentia to chime in here about how CrystalBeauty could be included. I don't want the number of players on one game to become too convoluted, but I'd love to get everyone who wants to attend involved however they'd like
I'm going to be sending out a few PMs over the next day or so to address a few areas of concern for this marathon. The reason I'm saying this publicly is because I don't want to give any sort of misconceptions that a bunch of the marathon planning is happening in shady back rooms. I feel that an open and honest discussion is best. So, while these conversations will be private, I want people to know what is going on.
First off, Essentia, I'm going to keep you on FF9 (at least for the moment). I'm not going to mess with who's playing what game based on a cryptic post that I can't understand. I'm going to PM CrystalBeauty and find out what her concerns are; our discussion will remain private, but I need to know what she means.
Secondly, on any game with more than one player, there absolutely, 100% has to be good coordination between the players. I have no idea what's happening with FF12 at the moment, and I will be PMing the involved parties to find out about routing, practice, coordination, etc.
Finally, I would like to thank puwexil for all of the help that he's been giving me behind the scenes -- basically, a tonne of suggestions about how to make things successful and run smoothly. He caught me on a bad day, once, with some good advice; I took his head off for it, and that was absolutely uncalled for. I would like to publicly apologize for that, and reiterate what a blessing it is to have someone with his knowledge and experience helping me out
Hey Poxnor, I couldn't realistically add anything gaming wise to the marathon, but as an Edmontonian, perhaps I could help somehow behind the scenes. As you could guess, I work in oil and gas (shocking!) so I can't even guarantee I'll be in town that weekend, but if so, perhaps I can help do airport shuttle runs. Also, I'd like to donate a prize, but I'd like it to be something awesome.
I'm pretty sure that there will be plenty of things to do behind the scenes; thank you for the offer! Also, if you like FF games, feel free to learn the route of one of the games that's not getting any commentary love -- this marathon needs good commentary.
And if you're insane enough to actually want to do YEG runs, far be it from me to complain
Edit: Oh, and I've totally fallen behind on keeping the prize list up-to-date, both from the previous thread and this thread. I'll have to do that this weekend. Thank you to everyone who has offered a prize
I feel confident that I can give these more tight estimate times now that I am getting consistent times on Mystic Quest. Any% 3 hours, 100% 3 hours 20 mins. The 100% run has less variables to make it have a large variety of error. The Any% does have more variance. I'm going to be doing some more Any% runs to see if I can consistently get Sub 2:40s and then I may be sure that the estimate will be valid.
I think I might as well make a very tentative sign-up.
Ryan Zimmerman Anytime except early morning would be preferred. I can run Dissidia, and Dissidia 012 with a TBD for the estimate (most likely a couple hours for 012) (and for Original, we can have donations for which stories I do, the more donations, the more stories) I can also do FF13-2 with an estimate of about 5/6 hours. (Trying to bring that down).
I may have to cancel when I signup for new classes in November, but I might as well signup just in case. I realized taking a Greyhound from Vancouver to Edmonton, while boring, is probably a lot cheaper than a flight, so I'll do some research on that.
First off, you can chalk me up as 99.9% chance of making it. It seems things will work quite swimmingly for me travel-wise.
Second, I plan on getting started on XII tomorrow (well, technically today). The main thing holding me back was the injury I mentioned earlier. As I have already told Poxnor, I lost the tip of my left ring finger doing some home renovations (and because of a poorly-designed "safety" device, no less) three weeks ago this Sunday (surgery was the following Wed.). I am 99% recovered psychologically, so no need to worry about me, and physically I am sufficiently recovered for marathon game sessions that involve my left hand for more than just holding down a single button or using a control stick. As I said before, I'm fine and am not asking for sympathy - I honestly think my parents took it harder than I did - my friends and I have been joking about it pretty much since it happened.
There is one other thing I feel I should mention as well. I have a strong baritone, and given the importance of music in FF, that may come in to play. That said, I don't actually know of any FF songs (other than the opera in VI of course) that have male parts. I have the range to sing Maria's part if necessary (or other female parts that don't go as high as the crazy high note in "Under Pressure" by Queen - I'm about one step [two notes] shy of that if I strain ruin my voice), and I have no shame whatsoever, so that's also on the table. I also have long hair, which could help for humorous purposes. So if there are any other songs I should learn, please let me know, and I will have them down by March.
Well, the route for FF1 is 100% solid. Times are going to be random because of RNG and encounter rate trolling. If all goes well during my run, we'll have about 25 minutes of free time, but I'm not going to lower the estimate because the RNG can troll that much.
I think I might as well make a very tentative sign-up. I can also do FF13-2 with an estimate of about 5/6 hours. (Trying to bring that down).
Let me know if you want routing advice to get the run time down, I'd love to help, especially considering I wont be able to attend the marathon. My PB is 3:25:XX, you should be able to get below 4hrs easy!
How are we looking at this point for finalizing the start/end and bonus stream/sightseeing dates? I found some good flight options (which are worth their weight in gold where I live) so I'd like to get my flights booked soon; but since I'll only be able to afford 4 or 5 days off from work and have never been to western Canada before, I want to make sure I can stay for the sightseeing (even if that means having to miss the first day or so of the marathon).
