I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
A Starcraft speedrun would be a great idea.

I remember on Infoceptor they had a competition to do War3 levels as well. That might be interesting to see mirrored here.

Definately interested in these runs. Are you doing all races all missions? Or just one race?

Also, this definately opens up a sidebar of ideas like competition videos where you can video 2 good players and post both of their perspectives. That would rock.

Look forward to seeing how this progresses.

It doesn't open up anything. There are already many sites where you can obtain replays of progamers...this is simply a single player run, like any other on the site.

If those were the ones I saw, and I'm not aware of any others, they weren't very good. You needed to have a specific version of War3 installed to watch them, and the version wasn't the same for all the maps. Also, it was entirely on Easy skill, so all the levels used the same basic strategy - "rush for teh win kekekekeke". The computer pretty much just sits there and lets you kill it on Easy.
Forward standard-by-ten .
So what's the story on replays?  Are you gonna make RWAs?
Glub glub.
I know a good speed trick:  one of the later Protoss missions (6 or 7, I think) you can beat the level in five minutes or so.  It is the mission where the objective is the oddly-cryptic "Destroy the Heart of the Conclave".  You start with a handful of units (plus 3 legends, yay) in a jungle and you have to retreat back to a base.  Anyway, you have four dark templar and Zeratul.  Take them and run to the southwestern most point of the MAIN base (there are some bases on the side; disregard them).  From there, just forge east, ignore any fire you may be taking, and destroy the first nexus you see.  As long as Zeratul does not get killed, you win.

No...you can't make demos of single player games because they're basically UMS maps.

I haven't tried any Vanilla levels yet...been playing through BW. Almost done with Zerg, which I think is the hardest of both games.

I really don't like the level where you have to collect 10k minerals...I mean...WOW...how boring. I get it done in about 14 mins though.
The best way I can see capturing is by having one computer play the game while the other captures through an Svideo and 8th inch to 8th inch stereo wire.

Nope! Camtasia is what I'm doing, unless someone could hook me up with Fraps...

I heartily endorse this speedrun and/or product.

yes i'd love to see starcraft runs!

Can anyone tell me where to find demos of multiplayer games with the top players? I'd like to see that too Smiley

www.teamliquid.net (you can get vods here sometimes)
www.ygclan.com
www.gosureplays.com

Also, while some levels of SC and BW are quite well suited to speedrunning, others aren't.

Another thing is that since all the missions are independent of each other, it would be easy for any given mission to be improved upon, so there's room for lots of contributors. I have a couple of levels in mind that I'll probably do if marsh doesn't do them faster than I can first.

Oh yeah, www.yaoyuan.com is slow, but probably the best site to find Starcraft pro-level videos.

I guess you're right. I thought the Infoceptor ones were done on hard, but they were actually done on easy.. maybe the rules were changed later? That's kinda lame, though. They should at least divide up the best times by difficulty.

As for the "one specific version" thing... obviously, this is a problem which can't be avoided without either redoing all the maps whenever a patch comes out or making huge avis of all the replays.

3:05 on Terran 1 vanilla

2:25 for 2

level 3 is pre-determined

2:40 for 4

7:54 for 5 -- need to send more backup, took forever to kill the buildings

7:44 for 6 (rescue Duke with 2 dropships, I'm a clever boy...)

1:04 for 7 (sure I can get sub 1:00, SCV got stuck on some crap)

BTW, Terran mission 3 is the one that is timed. Is your '1' the boot camp?...

I say don't worry about those cut scenes at all, marsh... we can all trust that you started the level normally, and I'm sure everyone has seen the scenes many times already.

BTW, if anyone is wondering how good marsh really is, I've played him many a time.  In his top game (that I've seen) he maxed out at 150 APM... playing as Toss.  Take that as you will.

If you'd like to see marsh in action for yourself, he's featured in a large number of my personal reps:

What did you do for this one? I beat it in a similar time by using floating buildings (built near the area you have to fly over) to distract fire.

The reps online involving marsh are:

Al VS marsh for the Elite Championship (games 1 and 2)

RD and Ngamer team up to beat marsh

marsh beats SlayerRocket, Ngamer, and Neo (horrible horrible game)

marsh beats up on Ngamer, PDO, and Breck

EDIT - added...

marsh beats Breck in one of the funniest games ever

Ngamer: That champ game wasn't fair Wink

I got around 18 minutes on the stage where you have Duke in a BC and you start with floating buildings...I can do better, but meh...strategy seems the most important.

I rushed to a tank w/siege, parked it in front of the big defensive line and as soon as it hits all their guys come streaming from the woodwork (i.e. all rines leave their bunks) and rush...use your starting guys to kill them...keep going with tanks...then eventually gols.
