Losing a run on Egg Emperor = suck. What kind of times were you getting?

Ugh... I've erased the disk by now but It's close to these times:

3:12 (Seaside Hill, A-rank)
3:20 (Sea Palace)
0:27 (Egg Hawk)
3:20 (Grand Metropolis, A-rank)
5:20 (Power Plant, seriously this level is long)
0:16 (Team Rose)
2:56 (Casino
4:58 (Bingo Highway)
1:38 (Robot Carnival)
3:50 (Rail Canyon)
4:46 (Bullet Station)
1:04 (Albatross, new best)
3:50 (Frog Forest)
4:49 (Lost jungle, damn vines...)
0:07 (Team Dark, Where a well-placed Thundershot can be instant victory)
4:45 (Hang Castle)
4:48 (Mystic Mansion, optimizing this one is tough)
2:53 (Robot Storm)
5:30 (Egg Fleet, haven't practice this one much yet)
5:20 (Final Fortress, Same)
1:13 <- Is my current best for Egg Emperor

This comes to about 1:03:00. I'll try and upload some other stuff and pick-apart what can be done better. I didn't learn a few things until I saw some of JoshiG4's videos.
fucking .gif....
I'm confused, are you going for speed or A ranks?
Speed Running Joy-bringer
Speed run with all A-ranks. May as well because only 2 levels (maybe 3) want a bulk of points to earn it. Going for pure speeds causes you to end up with B's, C's and D's for some levels. Boss/Fight stages are based on time, so they don't need to be done different.

What I have to do to get an A won't be much different because the time bonus will usually push me up to the requirement. Stage 01 and 03 wants 60,000 points About 35,000 comes from time, the other 25,000 is from residual character's scores, power cores and rings.
fucking .gif....
maybe I could help you cut some corners dealing with time
Anyways it wouldn't really matter in this game, for if you are going for an A rank it would be only like a three second difference between a pure speed run. So A-Rank = better.
Speed Running Joy-bringer
Well... maybe not 3 seconds. But I've been consistantly. hitting 3:10 on the first level with A.

And seeing how this is single segment, and 0 deaths to boot I'm going to have to make sure I don't buff things and screw up right at the end (CURSE YOU EGG EMPEROR!!) or halfway. If it's in level 4 it's not so bad, but the Casino Levels have a tendency to be luck based.

I'll be playing around it L/R for a more dynamic (and sometimes better) camera during stages.

And now Sae brings (hopefully) some good news! I'll be starting to try and record the run sometimes next week (when the break starts... close to that time). I'll be able to do lots of capturing so I should be able to get something I can work with.

I mean... dang, this is going to be one heck of an accomplishment f everything goes right.
fucking .gif....
actually this would work better if I can see whats going on.

Many of your times in the failed run were over a minute behind the TA records, and I highly doubt the speedrun is going to be very impressive with times like that.

If you can tell me your strats for any level I'll help you improve them. Here's some info on the last two: In Final Fortress the higher route is always the fastest, and in the two-tiered area mid-level you can jump off the upper edge and land on the dashpad further ahead. There's probably only 3 parts in the level where you have to fight to get an A rank.

Your strategy for Egg Emperor isn't very good judging from the videos. It really shouldn't be that hard to destroy those shielded robots, just do a combo attack with Knuckles to pound the ground and destroy them in one shot. You shouldn't slide or rocket-accel towards the boss, considering the risk of being hit while doing so; just run up to it with Tails and thunder-shoot until you win.

Speed Running Joy-bringer
Hmm... a tough one. Well I'm going to be putting up some videos of each stage and grasp what is going on.

Alright well the times. Being that this run is going to be Single-Segment and NO DEATHS to boot, I'm going to have to keep a level head when I decide to jump off a cliff to shave off some seconds. But I might have to consider some deaths if this is getting to be to difficult. So after while, I decided to do an all-A rank run. This isn't too much different from regular because you are basically getting more points for a bit less times (2-4 minutes the entire run if things go right).

You know, I've seen speeding through levels, but without some initial points, its a C, it's a D, etc. (Seaside Hill gives you an E even if you are under 3 minutes!). I manage to rack up another 16,000 points in 13 seconds so I don't see too much lost.

Egg Emperor: I got a sub-60 second strategy that's pretty simple and it starts by dashing past him but... well what I did there was a bit stupid You see, whenever I get hit then I quickly switch leaders to reduce the shock time. The problem with this is you don't get the barrier of the person who just got hit so you can actually quickly loose a life doing this.  I did a flying kick towards the Emperor instead off to the side and got mauled. But the strategy here is for Tails to K.O the Emperor before he starts moving away. I'd switch to Sonic to move away from the cannon fire fast) I was taking out those robots because they tended to get in the way (so do the cannons, but taking them out wastes time). I'll put a better one up later. Also, I found out that you can beat his "CHAAARGE!" attack with Knuckles clashing against it (or if you watched, having Sonic and Tails in ball form)

I may as well get a few more things up on the ball here.

Team Battles: I really don't know what to do about these. There's the "just sit still and they will throw themselves off" claim... happened to me once, but I'll be danged if I ever get a consistent 8 second victory. tends to be 16 seconds for me, and I'm hoping I get lucky like hitting the leader while everybody follows them off.

Other Egg Bosses: No worries here, except for perhaps Robot Storm. Egg Hawk is under 30 seconds, Egg Albatross is under 58 seconds, and Robot Carnival's time depends of if I get the correct Power Cores in time. Storm in simple but I'm getting some inconsistency here.
Speed Running Joy-bringer
Oh, and about the Egg Emperor. It doesn't look like I have to worry if he starts getting away. Because it seems like a lot of the times I shoot the core while he's moving, it gets stuck there and K.O's the thing faster. I wish that would happen when it's stationary...

And taking out the canons seems to be worth it. Because this boss has a lot of luck riding on him. That takes about 10 seconds...

Like I said before. I think doing Individual Level runs of each stage and team would work best. And, bosses are their own stage, and should count as such as well.

can you make a speedrun on team sonics story

without getting a hit
Speed Running Joy-bringer
It probably would be better, but I'm going for SS with their Story. Again, I'm going for all A-ranks so that's a bit different.

1:28:45

This time can be downsized a bit, but  other than that, I'm nearly good to go. I just a couple more things to do. One of them is to get a device to lower the sound from the splitter. I get "overpeaking" during scenes with lots of noise and this causes the sound to degrade and producing a rejected run is crazy.
fucking .gif....
still here...
Speed Running Joy-bringer
Randomness is fun but this definitely  takes the cake.

No deaths AND speed... one hell of a combination in this game.

I just found a trick that can allow you to press glass and crates on the floor instantly. It works on the level of the team blast glitch (but not as useful). I'm considering the S-Video record while I watch no sound option. Maybe the splitter is Amplifying the audio.

How does it work?

Speed Running Joy-bringer
Well the way it works is with Sonic. Sonic does that flying kick of his, and at the same time, you switch to Knuckles. Done right, whatever he is standing on instantly breaks. I think what happens is that flying kick becomes Knuckles' attack when you switch, and gains properties because of it (Maybe I can get a quick demonstration going later... if I can master it.)

In fact, sometimes you can somehow thrust yourself downward and start falling full speed immediately. Save up to 3 seconds!

EDIT: Well just like much of the game's control scheme, It's now going to work 100% with glass. Sometimes it breaks, sometimes you propel across it. Wooden crates seem to wor so I'll keep that in mind for the castle stages.
fucking .gif....
this new trick, where has it been useful to you in what stages?

Sorry about that long delay.

The trick overall does give you some gains. I've been testing it out and it works with crates just about all the time, but the floor glass gets a bit tricky. I'll try it ounce and if it doesn't work then tap A and fire at it. I've done a few things also (because I think I've got a solution for the sound) and for example, I'd like you guys to have a look at these:

- Power Plant w/ new record (for me).
- Robot Carnival with Knuckles' reason to level up first.

Update: Sheesh... after what seems like an eon, things are finally starting to look up. You really have to strangle the game to get it the way you want. There is a bit of randomness (like enemy positions and set angles... too many things to account for), so I'll just have to try for the set that co-operates the most.

1:23

Latest attempt gave me this. I'm going to look at the point guide and figure out how many I need for each point based-stage before doing it again because I ended up over-doing some parts. Don't think I need 45,000 for Casino 1 for example...

I thought those runs on those levels were great.  Shocked
fucking .gif....
that power plant was really good.  I mean, making me want to redo my time for it and I didn't go for kill all of those kills like you.

whats your fastest without trying for A rank?
Very impressive.  Your Robot carnival makes me ashamed for having to resort to TBG.  Though that being said, one phase must be quicker, though less "GAESOME" as you put it, I admit, to use the Team Blast in the monitor above the arena you get to via the spring.
Speed Running Joy-bringer
Power Plant: Doing what was required, I would get 5:30 (which practically equals A-rank anyway). To be honest I got a little lucky here. I light dash in that loop from that one section because it rallies your partners for the upcoming homing attacks, then after that Tails came right up and boosted Sonic (lucky...)

Robot Carnival: Oh yes Paused, yeah I see what you mean. My plan is to use Team blast twice. Both times are where tough enemies appear. Plus, you get to move sooner the first time this level loads (There is some stupid input-ignore time for each level that is annoying).

If Tails gets NO power cores by phase 4... it could be trouble. At least I had 1 so I could take em' all down and use Knux to plow through them. Also if Knuckles gets at least 2 power cores before phase 5, then this fight is in the bag. I'm hoping I can remember where I used the Light attack to hit the gold robot on the last phase. Otherwise Sonic loops around wasting time...

Oh yeah, check this out: Hang Castle Shortcut
This one was ORIGINALLY found when playing around with the PC version. But luckily, it still worked for GCN.
