He said he needs more offense/defense to break the game, right? And without a reliable means of obtaining the Super Suit in a SS run, the next best thing is the Quartz Charm.

If he's got the Lazy Shell to protect his healer at that point, you still need an attacker that's well guarded. The only issue with Culex will be the amount of time needed to defeat him. If it's less time than he'd spend risking his run against bosses, it seems it's possibly a viable means of speeding through the last, more difficult parts of the game.

Or more segments on the run for SDA, either one will work.

I wish I could get my brother in on speedrunning, he could do an SS of this game for SDA. He can get the Super Suit something like 1 in 5 tries, which is crazy. Or a low% Lvl. 3 run, either one.

dont worry i ditched the culex idea. sticking with just going straight through but picking up lazy shell. i actually have streamed smrpg a few times in the last week, but just kinda like, didn't announce it in here. it was pretty ghetto though, using a cam on the tv and all, and i even adjusted the brightness setting once to reduce glare, that was a mistake lol

but yea, one of those streamed runs taught me to scrap the culex idea. :p next smrpg streams will be thursday and friday, i'll actually make sure to announce it in here. i'll have definite times of day for those posted tomorrow. i've been streaming the ss attempts/magfest practice, but again, you'll have to deal with glare since im not dimming the screen anymore and i can't use a capture card on this thing.

so yea, definitely been playing the game lately and streaming it, and i pretty much know how im going through it, but still will be making strategy tweaks to battles after nimbus land is done. people who are there to watch are of course welcome to give input as i go. so yea, sorry again for not posting about the streams in here once i actually started doing them! >.< my bad!

Well, I was going to suggest the Ghost Medal for defense and the Troopa Pin for offense. I don't know what level Geno is in the run, but Geno Blast and the Troopa Pin nearly destroys every encounter in the game after Nimbus Land.

I think abusing star in Land's End is better than Cluex.
If you can do Sergent Flutter's mission well, you'd better do it.
Power Blast and Cristalline would help you.

Getting File / Ice Bomb in Moleville is good strategy too, I think.

thanks for the tips, although i coincidentally was already messing with most of those. i definitely am farming for frog coins on the troopas to get power blasts and crystallines for the final stretch, i was definitely going to abuse the land's end star, and i do make sure to get some ice bombs when i get to seaside town, although currently i only use it to make the megasmilax battle take just a few seconds. i guess i could look into their usage late in the game. the troopa pin can definitely go on geno for the final parts of the game. i've been pulling out princess toadstool for the valentina and axem rangers battles because of how much damage is typically done to the full party in one turn (group hug seems like a must unless i waste time going back to tadpole pond beyond stockpiling stat boosters), but for bowser's keep and beyond geno seems to hold up well.

i will probably stream this tomorrow (thursday), maybe around 16:00 gmt (11:00 est), although it might start a little earlier. you will need to deal with glare and stuff since i dont have a capture card right now. i will probably do 2 full runs, experimenting more in the first one so i know what works well.

hope to see some of you there! even if you can't catch the first run because of school/work or whatever, at least a few people can probably catch the 2nd run (might take a lengthy break between the runs since gaming 8-10 hours straight with no breaks is insane, even if it is an easy game like smrpg)

I don't have tons to offer, but just wanted to wish you the best of luck! I love what I've seen so far, and this has been one of my most anticipated improvements for a long time. All I can think of that could be of help is a quote from the Dragon Warrior 1 TAS:

"Luck Manipulation VS Leveling Up? Luck Manipulation wins!"

Always manipulate luck if you can. With a bunch of restarts, you should be able to manipulate tons of free rock candy (or free anything) at will. In addition you can get big boosts from the Lucky Jewel as I'm sure you saw in the TAS.

there has been a death in the family, so i have to make a trip out to los angeles this week and therefore will be unable to make progress on putting a run together for smrpg. so in case you get to wondering whether this is still being worked on, just know that nothing's happening until like, next week. Tongue

when i'm back, i'll probably start messing with smrpg a lot more than usual mainly due to there being basically a month until the marathon event. my main distraction will probably arrive here just before december: mushihimesama futari (360 version). but other than that game (unless i put a couple credits into deathsmiles once in a while or play some borderlands) it's going to be pretty much all smrpg for december. plenty of streams, i expect. :p

My feelings on The Demon Rush

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I saw this run a couple of days ago and I was really impressed! Rakuu uses a lot of smart strategies to take out the bosses. The only thing that can't be done in a single-segment is checking out which doors are the puzzle and action doors when you're faced with choosing 4 out of 6 doors.

I'd say the saving and leveling abuse right before monstro town is just death abuse since game isn't being loaded.

BTW romscout, if you need something translated, I can probably do it for you, but my SMRPG knowledge is a little rusty.

P.S. Valentina's name in the Japanese version is Margarita, and she's even holding a drink when you fight her! I found that pretty funny.

wow, approaching 3 hours for a RTA? definitely need to watch that sometime this week before continuing, sounds super helpful. also sounds like my sub-3 hours goal for redoing the segmented run was a pretty good bet after all.

thanks for the link! i will certainly take no shame in stealing strategies in order to get a better run at magfest (of course, rakku's run would warrant mucho thanks) and for my submissions to sda, especially since the main trouble with my runs has been devising good strategies for basically everything past nimbus land.

oh, and for those interested in attending streams, i need to find out my work schedule every week before i can post what days in that week i am streaming. i am basically going to stick to doing it on my off days (which should be 2 per week). that should equate to about 3-4 streamed runs per week, and then i'll probably get a few others in after work at times.

oh my bad, yea i had a stream yesterday but forgot to post about it here. >.<

oh well, having one today too, maybe in a couple hours after i watch the full rta first. i am going to do a death abuse run today, even though i am not sure i am going to have death abuse in the magfest run yet. i might though just because of how much faster it'd make everything go. will mess with no-death runs again later in the week. hopefully i don't suck as bad as i did yesterday. :p ... or have insanely bad luck on many boss battles (croco bombing like 5+ turns in a row, belome scarecrow funking literally the whole battle after his first scripted time diong it, raspberry doing nothing but sandstorm the entire bundt battle, yaridovich spamming water blast... yes this all happened in the same run but i survived all those battles somehow).

Wow, that guy went frickin nuts on the shopping before the sunken ship. No mercy with those items. Mallow was pretty badass with superjacket on too (I think thats what it was). Btw Rom, I think you shoulda used Peach instead of Bowser during the yaridovich battle. Also you don't need to level up Peach's special, just her hp. Group hug is so broken even at default stats.

i think you're probably right about peach's hp. and yea, i always used to do mario+bowser+peach for yaridovich back when i only played through the game casually, it's just that i figured mario+geno+bowser would do better attack-wise... but since it's apparently in his cards to spam water blast sometimes, i might as well go with the peach plan to at least save on healing items since i'm healing so much anyway there.

also, stream on wednesday and saturday, and i PROMISE i'll announce it in here beforehand

in fact, i'll go ahead and say 12 pm (noon) EST for wednesday... or does that conflict with essentia's stream? i dont think she announced one, so i should be safe. let me know if that's wrong though.
