Give it at least a month. It'll take a while to get a run that has both the Super Suit and the Mack skip in it... although for now I'll take one with just the Super Suit.

Also for those wondering about the beetle mania scoring... I got bored and suicided at 32 mil because I didn't wanna play long enough to reach 100 mil.

...but I am shocked he has no interest in continuing to learn how to speed run this game considering he has the hardest part of running it already down (obtaining the Super Suit).

Oh, there could be plenty of reasons:
  • He sees how anal the verifiers are with RPGs. You absolutely must be perfect or any run will get rejected, regardless of the merits of the run itself.
  • It's a massive headache that isn't worth putting up with.
  • Better things to do with his time.
  • It'd be pointless, cause the time would probably be overtaken in the matter of about a week.
  • Dude hates SDA.
  • It's not fun to speedrun.

All of this is speculation on my part, but seriously, pick one. Tongue

Dude, he wasn't even a member of this site until last night. So, I don't see how he could hate the site, for one, or know that "some" verifiers of RPGs are anal (notice I said some). It depends on the game, since I know there weren't that many anal verifiers for Earthbound, which I helped verify. The verifiers for the Zelda speedruns are much harsher, if you want to talk about how anal verifiers can get. Trust me. The verifiers I know were harsh for the FFI run, but that was a close rejection to begin with.

Also, from what I can tell, most of what you're saying isn't much speculation, as your own personal opinions on speedrunning in general. At least, that's what a few of them sound like to me.

Some are, but not all of them. I only had two real ideas, the rest were just made up on the spot for funzies, but that obviously didn't go over so well. Undecided

An RTA for this just began http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv11386255 (need an account to watch)

Edit: Ouch, very few mistakes until he got to johnny and snuffed superjumps that got to 70-90.  An hour and 40 minutes in is such a late time to have a high difficulty run killer moment.

Just something we're going to have to accept that might happen (probably a lot with me, and that's assuming I even get timing down well enough to do 100 consistently). By the way, I missed this run, but were there any notable time savers up to that point in the run that I was failing to do, or was it just tightening menus and having good boss luck? (assuming it was faster than me at that point, I know I was slightly over 1:40 at Johnny in the 3:51)
My feelings on The Demon Rush
romscout: I don't know about time savers, but rakuu said he is aiming for sub-3 hours on his nicovideo page.

Ah, I'm trying to remember what he did up until Johnny worth mentioning.  He failed a superjump attempt on bottom bundt which killed it automatically (he happened to have an able juice that bowser used after top bundt died to cure the fear'd mario) but I think your strat is faster.  He used like 3-4 turns to blow out the candles on top bundt because he didn't red essence.  On grate guy and knife guy he missed his first terrorize but landed the 2nd one on both of them and their defense became super squishy.

In the town before Johnny he was hella aggressive with his selling,  I mean he was spamming sell like completely indiscriminately.  He didn't want or need a single thing in his inventory but pick me ups and whatever he already had equipped.  If it wasnt a pick me up or attack item he was like "f*** it".  Guess he isn't planning for many "just in case" moments, the run has to go his way or the highway.  He didn't attempt superjump on the squid like you often do, he just faught it straight up.

Like in was0x's tas, he didnt give cricket pie to frogfucious til the second trip.  Mack skip wasn't even attempted, he just ran up the middle.  Croco's bandits (all 3) were faught in moleville.  I dunno if he planned to do it later but he did NOT buy the exp booster yet he still collected a crap load of frog coins.  I guess either he plans on getting all the stat boost items he can carry or he was gonna get the exp booster after yari.

During his failed run he died while fighting the mimic box monster in kero kero sewers due to a fire wall on turns 1 and 3.  I didn't watch his second run during that part so I dunno if he tried it again or not.  I gotta say, this guy can tear through a menu at almost inichi speeds.  With boss luck (bundt), super jacket in 1 attempt, and keeping up that consistancy and intensity, he'll break 3 hours (with RTA rules anyway).
that Metroidvania guy
What's funny about running up the middle in Mack's room is that if you aren't going to attempt the skip, it's actually faster to sneak behind the shyguy bodyguards and it skips the first part of the cutscene.

I think if I just keep playing long enough into runs, I can get used to doing the selling better in Seaside while keeping everything I intend to use for speed. The bombs I get pretty much match the RTA except for like a small difference between ice bombs and fright bombs (but I kinda count on fire bomb and fright bomb freebies).

When I start trying Super Suit runs, I definitely will ONLY be attempting Super Jump on Johnny. It technically just wastes time on the cake and the squid. Only reason I was doing it in my earlier runs was lack of confidence in super jumping. I feel like I can automatically get the Attack Scarf now, and hopefully soon the Super Suit will come.

I suppose it makes sense to not get the Cricket Pie til the way back: the time saved is in how you exit/enter Mushroom Kingdom. It's quicker to exit from the place near the castle in both instances, but you're forced to go by the shop on your way back from Marrymore anyway. I'll remember to start doing it that way.

I always hit Knife + Grate with Terrorize, I've never needed to cast it twice since using it in runs. Also about the chest monster in Kero Sewers, he shouldn't have even needed to withstand 3 attacks if he had Jump Shoes on Mario and fought Mack. The jump is powerful enough at that point to wipe him out at the start of turn 3 unless he doesn't time the jumps perfectly.

So I guess menus and Super Jumps are going to be the keys. I think the more I play the game, the better I'll get at both. I've been able to tear through the early game menus in the past (I kinda slowed down on purpose to make sure I wouldn't screw up), and it's mostly a matter of utter memorization of where things will be and a feel for how fast the cursor goes when you're holding a direction.

Sub-3 hours will require a LOT of luck, too. Like, we're talking one run out of every 100 or more kind of luck. Even if he tears through the menus, Smithy needs to pretty much stay in his sorcerer head once he cycles in with it as the 2nd head, the major bosses toward the end of the game need to be drawing their normal attacks a lot more than they choose spells with long animations, and he'd almost need to just blindly blow straight through Bowser's Keep without drawing a battle room (resetting or death abusing would be too detrimental to time when you're going for a goal like that). The reason I set my eventual goal for sub-3:10 was because of crap like that. The difference between a sub-3:10 run and a sub-3:00 run would basically just be the difference between ridiculously good luck and "did he TAS that?"-type luck.

But yea, I know the things I went overkill on in my submitted run and what I need to do to start improving the time outside of the Super Suit, so I have a good feeling about getting a GREAT run this year, even if it isn't as fast as whatever the best Rakuu run ends up being. Sorry Rakuu, I don't have that kind of time to dedicate to one game, even if it's one of my favs. :p
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
It's taking longer than I thought to find frame data about Super Jumps. I guess it can vary if the enemy floats or dwells higher up the screen, for example. I'm slowly going over the topic on TASVideos forums but I don't have an account there anyway, so I'd appreciate it if someone would just ask over there >_>

doing a run right now on stream (i know it's late, and I still haven't gotten the Super Suit in practice yet, but just trying to refresh my memory on SSing the game)

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/romscout-live
that Metroidvania guy
The run I finished just now was intended to be a casual run that served as a refresher for my route/strats, and it pretty much felt just like that. I also did a lot of "experimenting" throughout the run and found some key time savers. I ended up finishing in 3:55:xx, failing to get the Mack skip and the Super Suit. However, I have confidence in being able to do sub-3:40 now with the Attack Scarf only and will probably be able to get at least a few good runs out of that before finally being able to come through with a Super Suit run.

So, right on to the time savers, which were obviously the highlight of this lighthearted, otherwise "meh" run (which included such fantastic blunders as using Red Essence on Bowser in the Bundt fight, failing to die to Orbisons in Bowser's Keep, and forgetting that Johnny is in fact not a chest, has animation, and I need to practice Super Jumps specifically on him):

-Obviously I implemented the idea of only attempting Super Jump on Johnny; this means that the cake goes down stupid fast, Kalamari falls quicker, and Attack Scarf/Super Suit rests on one battle.

-Got the Cricket Pie on the final trip to Mushroom Kingdom for that tiny little bit of time saved.

-Using Bowser instead of Toadstool vs. Dodo seems like a wise choice, especially if I fail to freebie Fire Bombs. He's pretty much a tank in comparison. The downside to this is wasting time using Freshen Ups if Aurora Flash or Petal Blast are used, but it's worth the risk given her past choices of moves in battle.

-The Axem Rangers... well, it's one hell of a battle now. Going in with Mario (Lazy Shell, Work Pants, Attack Scarf), Bowser (Hurly Gloves, Work Pants, Amulet) and Geno (Hand Cannon, Work Pants, Troopa Pin), the battle goes like this: Geno (attack boosted by Troopa Pin) uses Rock Candy, does 300 damage to every Axem Ranger. Mario takes out Pink. Black, Red, and Yellow attack. Bowser takes out Green. Geno boosts Mario, Mario takes out Black. Red, Yellow attack. Bowser attacks Red. Geno boosts Bowser, Mario takes out Yellow. Red attacks (or maybe attack boosts himself, forget which turn that is). Bowser attacks Red. Geno boosts self. Mario takes out Red. Healing with FroggieDrink or KeroKeroCola should be done 2nd to last turn if necessary. Party should withstand Breaker Beam, take out the machine fast. Yes, it pretty much works this way every time guaranteed now, I swear.

-Definitely will try death via sling shys in the battle hallway with the orbisons during future runs now.

-I only need to buy like, 3 or so Maple Syrups in Nimbus Land and it will stretch out for the whole game. I will still have the 9 Pick Me Ups for security. Last armor for Toadstool is Fire Dress. This means no shopping in Bowser's Keep or Factory now.

-Final factory stretch will have Mario, Bowser, and Geno except for the Gunyolk and Smithy fights, which will have Toadstool instead of Bowser. Think logically about this one.

-Smithy's first phase will be all about attacking the main target. I Crystalline first turn, attack with Mario on Smithy, Power Blast from Toadstool, 2nd spell no matter what it is will pretty much be guaranteed not to kill anyone in the party. Geno uses Rock Candy, Mario continues attacking Smithy, Toadstool Group Hugs when necessary... the battle just goes much faster this way.

So yea, the run will be improved before you know it. I have this run on disc, but I don't really feel the need to put it up anywhere. I'll just go ahead and keep it handy in case my brain demolishes itself and I have to refresh my memory on time savers. You'll see this all in action soon enough.

Next stream for SMRPG will probably be Thursday (tomorrow), my next day off from work. The run will be a little more serious than the most recent one.

(Btw, just as a side note, my time from beating the Axem Rangers until the end of the game was about 53 minutes, 8 minutes better than that same stretch in the 3:51:xx, and that's even with an utter failure at dying to the Orbisons, getting both battle rooms, and failing to get Exor in one turn like I should).
Awesome strategies there romscout.  You keep coming up with more and more time savers.  Wish I could have seen them all in action.  Guess I will catch the next stream on Thursday.  Maybe we could possibly race again (up to you, it might be too much to worry about), and you might get lucky if I don't get the super suit for once if we do. =p Cya then, and good luck.

change in plans: i'm doing a smrpg run tonight because i now have to work tomorrow (6 day work weeks, joy!). will start streaming soon, and the smrpg run will probably be started within a couple hours. here's the channel in case you missed it the last 47 times i posted the link:

so yea, horrible day on running SMRPG today, but I got a run when I was practically asleep just recently that beat my submitted run despite being absolutely horrible

Time was 3:49:xx

I missed a lot of perfect jumps early in the game, I missed doing 30 jumps on Johnny and had to do it on a random gecko in Land's End (I was really that tired, I swear), and generally it was just very sloppy. However, I've gotten better at the menus and much much better at the end of the game, to say the least. I was 6 minutes behind the submitted run after Barrel Volcano but pretty much raped the game after that despite making a few mistakes. I drew both battles rooms yet again (surprise!), and I really hope I am able to miss one someday.

I freebie'd the hell out of Rock Candy because I'm pro like that. I also got a Rock Candy drop from Machine Made Yaridovich. The final battle with Smithy was pretty smooth except when I forgot I didn't have any Rock Candies left. Remind me to run this game when I'm not asleep. I'm thinking of withdrawing my previous submission now that I KNOW I can do significantly better than it even with just the Attack Scarf. We'll see. Will probably do a run later today (afternoon) and go from there.

Here's UStream recordings for those who missed it:
Part 1
Part 2

Btw, I didn't pul off the Mack skip and I decided from now on that Bowser will be equipped with the Wake Up Pin instead of the Fearless Pin on Knife + Grate as well as Bundt. Just lowers the odds of having horrible fights there.
You keep getting better and better.  Your greatest enemy seems to be bad luck, and to combat this, I've come up with suitable save file names to ensure your absolute victory:

1)  RSisBest
2)  GoodLuck
3)  RagQuilt
4)  IofTygr
5)  Speedrun
6)  Godspeed
7)  SonicRPG
8 )  ToraTora
9)  HaxSkill
10)  tuocsmoR (inverse the bad luck to good luck)
that Metroidvania guy
SonicRPG? hahaha wtf

I'll try "SpeedRun" today. Seems simple and I don't think I've tried it before. :p So yea, that run I said I was doing this afternoon... gonna start in a few minutes on my stream. Here's the link for approximate the 719th time in this thread:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/romscout-live

I promise I won't rage too much at bad luck or missing the Mack skip this time. As proven by my most recent run, I seem to do better when I just take the stance of "meh, I'll at least finish the run". So I'll be a lot more chill about running it today.

Also, stick around after the run if you care to see some messing around in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. Awesome game.

Yea I caught some DDS last night.  It does look awesome, I should start my copy someday.  Undecided

Well, I had a GREAT run through Yaridovich (1:49 something at that point!) but botched it because I took like almost 10 minutes doing Super Jumps. Best was 71 on a gecko. I had the rhythm for 100 but choked.

I ended up ditching the actual speed run and just testing stuff such as checking all chest contents in Bowser's Keep, trying to find a way to dodge enemies better in the Factory opening, seeing whether you can farm items in the action rooms of the Keep by deliberately failing after grabbing stuff, and practicing Super Jumps again on the final stretch. :p

Believe it or not, despite all this screwing around the final time was 4:11:xx. Here's why:

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/4854093/highlight/49516

Quite honestly, this may never happen again. I won't spoil it. Just watch. It's worth seeing. And to think this could've gone twice as fast with the Super Suit.

Also, Digital Devil Saga is a lot of fun. I think with how things are going (wacky, to say the least), I'm just going to go through the rest of the game with a general guideline for setting up characters and then trying to go through the game another time with a different setup. After that I think I can start working on an actual speed run plan for that game. I think my ideas for the first couple of dungeons work but just need to be a bit more refined to be full-proof. I know exactly how to beat everything (minibosses, bosses and all) in the first 2 dungeons (alliance/betrayal route) so I can probably get the Mantras set up a little better for blowing through next time.

So yea, VorpalEdge and Cromarty, you might see a SMT run get done at some point. :p Got through the first dungeon in like just under 20 minutes and am now through the 2nd one (kinda wandering around a lot) in like 1:40:xx while having to focus on survival due to some surprises, so this game is definitely going a lot quicker than any other game in the series I can think of.

But none of you wanted to know about that if you came here to read about SMRPG. :p
I want off the ride....
Maybe it was the fright bomb? Maybe the fright bomb keeps him in the mage instead of making him fearful!

Stupid idea

So, if you had kept going with just the attack scarf and played through bowsers keep normally you'd have a sub 4 with this run? Wow, that can't be encouraging at all.

edit: ah, saw now that the 10 minutes wasted was actually for even getting the attack scarf.
