You'd be surprised, it's almost like every night  Grin  I like to keep the stream window open in the event that Rom appears to do something.
Talk to the Hand
Highlight of last night's run (Which I didn't even see): I make a "don't forget the key" joke in reference to another stream. Maybe 5 minutes later, romscout briefly forgets to pick up a key in Nimbus Land. Cheesy This was, I believe, the first time he had ever done this.

See rom, maybe instead of overthinking the joke, you should've just listened to me. Wink

EPIC BUMP

I hadn't completed a SMRPG run (though I barely tried) in over 3 months, but thanks to Rane deciding to casually race me, I completed the game not once but TWICE in a row! The reason: despite giving him a 20-25 minute head start, I caught up by Bowyer and was completely dominating by the time he reached Bundt. So we decided to up the ante and make it so I had to beat the game twice before he finished once! I almost completed the task; Rane landed the finishing blow on Smithy 2 hits before I did (and that was with HORRIBLE luck at the end of run #2!). It was probably a 5 gap had I not been in shock when he announced he finished (in reality, it was like 10-15 seconds later). It was crazy fun though, and I definitely was forced to relearn all my speed strats quickly in order to have a chance.

You can watch recordings of the race on my ustream page (some parts were not recorded due to technical errors, but most of it, and most importantly the finale, is there). I'm too lazy to link to individual videos. Go to the page and find them. My first run was about 3:58, 3:59 or so. Second run was like 3:47, 3:48. So nothing great, but good for a refresher. Before we decided to race, I was restarting left and right without even reaching the 2nd star, so it was a good thing I had some competition to motivate me. Crazy fun stuff. Thanks to everyone who watched!

Here's the ustream page where you can find the recordings:

Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
That's awesome. Sounds like a good way for you to finally lower your time a lot (and finally you'll be able to pull off 100 jumps on stream since it'll completely dominate what rane is doing :P). I hope I can catch any more of those that you do. Good luck with any future attempts if I can't pop in at the time!

SMRPG SS run attempt with new strategies I just thought of

Unrelated to pretty much anything, but continuing the discussion we had during the race, it seems that, if Wikipedia is accurate, Muscle Bomber Duo - Ultimate Team Battle is the place to go for the highest MHQ (That's MIKE HAGGAR quotient) in a single game. Apparently, multiple people can select the same character, and it's a 2-on-2 game. If my math is correct, that's four MIKE HAGGARs at the same time!

New best time = 3:43:36 (+/- 5 seconds)

Not long after "unrusting", I got a run finished that started out AMAZINGLY. Like, I don't think I'll ever get that kind of luck in the early going ever again. It started to go downhill in the Sunken Ship, and really derailed at Valentina and almost everything after that (Valentina didn't do a regular attack a single time and spammed some of her most powerful spells, ugh... and then I got Petal Blasted by Axem Pink! Yay! There goes some time!). Regardless, I had a fairly strong finish, and I had some of my best menu work ever. Very little of the time lost in the run was my own fault. I got very unlucky quite often (especially with the lazy shell randomizer) in the 2nd half of the run, but I went through the game quickly and confidently and as a result, got my best time. Because I finally broke the 3:45 mark I initially wanted to shatter (though I now have my eyes set on a Super Suit run of course), I am going to submit this while I continue to try improving it. We'll see how it goes.

Ah, I was pretty close with my prediction! Nice job, though, enduring through all that bullshit in the middle and then finishing strong. Will watch the end of Bowser's Castle and the Factory tonight.

(also i was somehow really awake at work today despite watching until 6am :B)

so no luck getting a run done last night (but got some weird glitch thing with Croco in the mines???)

but I sent in the 3:43:xx run today for submission

I will continue trying to get a great run in, but I'm also curious about starting to develop a segmented route, even if I may never do a segmented run myself. So I might mess with some number crunching this week too (I've never really number crunched SMRPG too much, so it might benefit me for SS runs as well).
Really awesome 3:43 run there and I'm glad you're submitting it!

I do have a question though about how SS works. Last I checked, Single Segment runs aren't allowed to save at all because if you do, it's considered a segmented run on this site. Well, in your run, you save in that cave to abuse the stars to grind up your characters for exp. Is there some sort of exception on what kind of saving you do in your runs that don't classify it as segmented?

Sorry this is a little off-topic, but I'm only wondering about this because I am pretty good at speedrunning Earthbound for the SNES (Just clocked in a time of 6:11, beating my old record of 6:39, hope to get sub 6 hours one day), and I find that it's a bummer that I'm not allowed to save at all. I save my game about 10-15 times throughout the game, a couple of them are to set up deathwarps to save time and the others are to ensure that if I magically die by accident, I don't get warped to a really far away place that will just end up killing my run. With the insane luck that's involved in this game, saving is kinda required. I mean, I'm not ever shutting off my console the whole run, so I don't see how it can't be single-segment :S

So, I'm just curious how you were allowed to abuse the star and grinding by saving your game and I want to know if I can save in my planned run of Earthbound, so I can know if I should be working on this seriously or to just give it up if I can't submit a run. Thanks a lot! Cheesy
SS means more that you can't reset the game and reload to do something over again. He saves because he dies, but the game immediately goes back to the select file screen. You just can't ever turn the power off.

From the rules:
Quote:
Any save and quit from the game will count as a segment.

So as long as you're not loading from that save and a death does not send you back to the title screen, you'd be allowed to use it.

This would be the definition of something not allowed; Loading from the file select screen. In SMRPG however, this is not the case since the game sends you right back at the current file's last save point.
Oh wow! I totally misunderstood then! That means that I can definitely do this Earthbound Single Segment run. Now I just gotta get myself an official copy of Earthbound and I'll be ready to go! Thanks a lot you two and I hope to get this sub 6-hour single-segment on this site in the future Cheesy

You might want to talk to some EB runners about your run, because I think Mickey Mage's SS estimate on the game was around 5 hours.

Also, in SMRPG-related news, the 3:43 run's been in verification for a while, so I'll assume it will have a verdict coming shortly. Puzzle game runner cyghfer has expressed serious interest in running SMRPG as well, so now I have a competitor, yay! Cheesy We've briefly discussed strat optimization on the IRC, and if either of us gets that damned Super Suit in a run, the time could be pretty scary.

I recently got a japanese SMRPG cart for really cheap (10 bucks) so I could directly compare my runs to rakku's. Learning the Dr. Topper quiz might take some time, but I've got the menus down, the Sunken Ship password is in the same spot for everything, and I don't really see any other language barrier problems coming up. If anyone happens to know a way to find the Japanese solutions for the Dr. Topper quiz, that'd be very appreciated. The text difference between the U.S. and Japanese versions is pretty significant; I'm going to compare mandatory cutscene times between 0xwas's low level TAS (J version) and the TASVideos TAS (U.S. version) of SMRPG so we can end any debate on Japanese version advantages before it even starts. Let's put it this way for now though: I think with great luck, a sub-3 hour SS run is possible on the Japanese version, but I'm not so sure anymore with the U.S. version.

Haven't really done a run of the game lately because of crazy work schedule and DVD recorder issues, but this game's always near the top of my speed running priority list, especially since the Super Suit run has yet to happen. I think I'm going to mostly be sticking to Japanese version for now, so look out for broadcast announcements in the UStream thread.
zzzzzzzzzz
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to see a Japanese version run.  No one cares about the time savings from language differences.
I think that switching version just because of shorter text is silly. Is the text part of the time, as well?
So unless the japanese version allows for some new tricks, I fail to see the point.
that Metroidvania guy
as I said, it was so I could directly compare my runs to rakku's, because I really wanna beat his run; if I ran on the U.S. version, I'd never be able to know accurately whether I beat it or not (even if I did technical timing differences between the TASes)

edit: also some of the absolutely insanely long cutscenes in the game are MUCH shorter on J version, which helps my sanity... trust me, it does after having to see them so much at this point :p
Oh I can believe you about sanity. Well, if it makes life easier for you, then by all means, go ahead...! If it can save you some sanity to create a better run, then I think it's well worth it.
If it saves any time at all, why not?  I don't understand why one shouldn't use the faster version if it's allowed and available to the person.  We're not here to see the text itself, understand the story, etc., but to see the fastest possible execution of the game.
It's still the fastest execution for the English text. It's the same execution, just a longer video.
yeah i'll be working on this (appreciate the puzzle association rom :]) and i will be doing all my running on the english version.

first order of business is going to be super jump practice - i really, really want to have gotten the super suit and have some kind of consistency with that before doing anything else with this game. rom's got the first half of the game pretty well solidified, barring possible tiny optimizations and any strategy shifts that might arise from consistently skipping mack from now on. unfortunately i can't race rom for now but i'll be playing around with this game for the foreseeable future.
CHOKES
I don't know if this is what you want for Dr. Topper, or if you've already found something, but: http://asurafantasy.sakura.ne.jp/sfc/supamario_rpg/karudeli.php
Without knowing any Japanese, it becomes hard to find the answer, but it might help anyway.

you are my hero

and no, it's just memorization; what language you have to memorize in makes no difference on being able to recognize what the question is quickly and then what choice to make based on that

If you don't know about anyone else then don't speak for everyone else.

The truth is that most of us want to see rom get the fastest time he can, and if he's willing to play a Japanese cart to do it, then awesome!

Go rom go!

Nice working on contorting my words there, Admin.  I stand by my original statement.
