I don't blame you for wanting to take a break from this game.  I wasn't even playing during that Dodo meltdown and it made me want to ragequit just from spectating it.  I told a friend about it who didn't even watch it, and he ragequit our phone conversation.

Even still, your original goal was somewhere around the time of 3:45 wasn't it?  It's tedious, but why not try to push a little further, if you've come this far?
Legendary Dragoon
The killer was the final boss.  Smithy was just not nice with his head selection.  Took about 5 minutes longer than it probably should have.

Eh, submit it like I did with my Faxanadu run. You can always improve it later, or wait for some other foolish idiot to try and improve it by 1 minute, then you'll beat their silly time by 10.
Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
So, I wasn't able to catch any but the very end of the run, which sucks, but again I'm glad you finally got a good (or decent?) time to at least submit here. Probably a good idea to improve it after you work on 100 SJs a little first (after you break awhile, obviously, since I know you're getting a little sick of the randomness in this game, haha), and then submit a much better run later. This is very good for a SS run, regardless, even with the luck you got at the end (seriously, that was way too many Metal Heads in that fight...).
Talk to the Hand
Though the metal head constantly popping up did give rise to a ~30-damage chip shot for the win, which amused me greatly.
Awesome run, romscout. I had to miss the stream this time around, but I've been following pretty closely.
I watched the final run yesterday and all I have to say is great job and enjoy the break.

Hahaha, yea that one was definitely a painful ending to swallow. Fortunately, the run I did later was much better at that point in the game.

It's not like I'm stopping. When I say I'm taking a "break", I really only mean a week or a two. Also, the goal I had in SS'ing this after the marathon run was to have a run that's faster than the current segmented run on the site. I accomplished that goal. The 3:45 was an estimate I made for how the run could go with standard luck. I actually would've been a minute or two off anyway, but yea, the NEXT goal for this game will probably be sub-3:40. I'm not entirely sure how plausible this is with just the Attack Scarf, so I may just end up having to skip that step and go for the Super Suit run, which will be like, a LOT faster but take much longer to master (due to how hard it is to get 100 super jumps consistently).

So yea, what I really wanted to have was a run on the site that was a lot better than the current one, and I think I got that. Everything before the last Factory stretch was pretty awesome. I still look forward to making a nice improvement later on. This isn't going to be the ONLY game I focus on running anymore, though. That's the main difference from before.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up to the streams and especially the 90+ who were watching the best run. I was sincerely surprised I had that many viewers, but it felt good. I've finished my comments to go with the run, so it should be up for verification sometime this week. I think the comments are kinda long, but meh. It's a long run, so it makes sense. I suppose any verifiers could tell me if there's any improvement I could make to the notes after the process is done. :p
Highly Evolved
My Dragon Warrior III run's comments when I put them into Wordperfect to spell check it was around 12 pages long single spaced.  Long isn't really an issue.

Getting menus tight is the biggest thing for a run like this as far as the run looking nice, especially the repeated menus like equipping and switching out characters.  It'll look sloppy, otherwise.

I would just like to inform everyone that my most recent run that I stupidly submitted is currently about to be topped by someone who has never played SMRPG for speed before. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem that interested in seriously speed running the game but enjoys watching me attempt to do so... so it looks like I'm going to have plenty of competition but not submission-wise as of yet. =\

Also, I'm going to practice Super Jumps like crazy tomorrow in the event I too can get the Super Suit on command in a SS run and I just don't know it yet.

Final time on the guy's run soon to come.

ok, he finished

final time was 3:40:xx and he didn't even know what he was doing after he got the super suit

congrats (although there's no way anyone can verify a run of yours until there's some sorta video, unfortunately)
Yeap. I'm the guy. No longer wanna be the guy. I am the guy.  Have fun beating it rom. If you can....

Well, didn't do so hot on initial super jumping practice (68 as a high, few attempts above 60), but as a consolation, I got some silly score on the beetle mania game within a few tries:

I wonder what the max score is?

I'm not sure. He didn't seem to interested in doing serious runs. As I said during the stream, even if he was just making it up, he's at least served as great motivation for improving the run. He said he had a camera or something though that he could try using... I'd love to see this guy stream a run even if it's bad quality.

I don't doubt that he actually did this run, but I am shocked he has no interest in continuing to learn how to speed run this game considering he has the hardest part of running it already down (obtaining the Super Suit). Regardless of whether he changes his mind or not, I'm definitely going to make sure that I get a Super Suit run done sooner than I was initially planning (so SotN and Kirby practice kinda needs to be pushed aside for a while). As of now he's agreed to always play the game alongside me when I'm streaming a run, which is really some competition I should be thankful for.
Legendary Dragoon
Yeah, the Super Suit would save a LOT of time.  Not only would it make Mario into a rape train, there wouldn't be any truly wasted turns in boss fights (Mario getting KO'd or getting a status ailment is a wasted turn IMO).  It really makes a huge difference now that I think about how many bosses cause ailments.

Smilax/Mega Smilax - Pollen Nap/Petal Blast
Valentina - Petal Blast
Czar Dragon - Iron Maiden
Axem Pink - Petal Blast
Countdown/Dingalings - Do I even need to list them?
Domino - Endobubble/Light Beam
Mad Adder - Sandstorm
The pre-Smithy hammers - Hammer toss (Fear)
Factory Chief - Funguspike
Smithy (Tank) - Magnum
Smithy (Treasure) - Every status known to Mario-kind

By getting the Super Suit, you'd instantly negate ALL of these statistical possibilities of wasted turns off in a completed run, plus turn Mario into an unstoppable offensive force.  Now that I think of it, I have a question.  Would it be possible for Mario/Geno to KO Smithy before the Shypers make your life hell if you had the Super Suit?  He only has 2000 hitpoints, and killing him early negates the need to kill the Smelter (also saving time of course).

Hmmm...romscout, I'm going to do some similar calculations like I did for Faxanadu and hit up GameFAQs and an emulator and try to see if there's a precise BPM timing for Super Jumps (and how big the frame window is to hit it, then maybe draw up a millisecond comparison, see if it's as bad as flashing Greats on Beatmania IIDX). Then I just have to make a click track (or mail you a metronome) and then you can listen to it on an iPod while you walk, while you eat, while you sleep...and then you'll know it pretty well.
Exoray
huh, beetle shmup? I must say I did not know this minigame existed at all. Where is it started?

Be sure to spot the perfect timing in that case, as the window starts out large and grows smaller at a few set points of # jumps done.

it goes higher than 8 digits.. I swear i got up to 7 billion... (Or at least 700mil...) though mind you; this was over 1 hour 30 minutes...

I think it's any time after Seaside Town. Might be Monstro Town, though. You get the game by going to the Mushroom Kingdom Inn and buying the GB from the kid in the corner for 500 coins.

Also, I'm curious enough to see just how high the score goes. Currently have the game paused at 18.4 mil, been playing almost 30 minutes. No idea why I'm doing this. =p Will do something else for a bit while it's paused, though.

I'm pretty confident you could do that with how much damage Lazy Shell + Super Suit + Attack Scarf would produce, especially with a Power Blast at the start. Also I haven't really practiced the Super Jumps today... need to get on that.

Aww, I missed Beetlemania after I left. :p

So, super jumps didn't go any better than the 68? That's not good. But, of course, the more your practice, the better you might get with the timing still? I don't know. I mean, you practiced super jumps a lot last night, but it was still only for that one day. I know you'll get better the more you put into it. Even if you want the next run to have the Super Suit, at least you know you can get 30 jumps more consistently now.
I've been working on the Bettle game for a while, starting up again when i get bored. currently in teh 8 digits, and it is taking forever to get farther.

Oh, there could be plenty of reasons:
  • He sees how anal the verifiers are with RPGs. You absolutely must be perfect or any run will get rejected, regardless of the merits of the run itself.
  • It's a massive headache that isn't worth putting up with.
  • Better things to do with his time.
  • It'd be pointless, cause the time would probably be overtaken in the matter of about a week.
  • Dude hates SDA.
  • It's not fun to speedrun.

All of this is speculation on my part, but seriously, pick one. Tongue
