I guess if you were to cut out all my time-losses from dumb mistakes that I had in my PB, then I'd say sub 2:03 is possible. There's also some tricks I don't go for such as the Echoing Caves 1 skip, Water/Ice Orb Skip and Whale Bay 1 Skip. If those would be in the run then you would need to get Lums you don't get otherwise. But with those skips included sub 2:01 might be possible (not sure about sub 2 hours though )
Hey guys, I've decided to try doing some runs again and wanted to know if anyone had an updated lum route for n64.. I know we can skip freeing carmen but that would skip 12 lums. Has anyone timed how much faster it would be and which lums to get instead?
Edit: I timed the whale bay trick to save 45 seconds if done first try. I'm thinking of getting the ten lums in the cage at the end of tomb of the ancients for the lums that are skipped in whale bay. The only thing is that pirate fight and getting the lums takes about 15 seconds. That is still a decent amount of time save overall but maybe there are other lums to get instead that cost less time.
I haven't had much luck with runs either. I'm making lots of mistakes and resetting.. Furthest I have gotten was the tomb of the ancients. This can only be a sign for good things to come hoping I don't make the same mistakes twice...heh.
I'm not sure which lums would be best to replace the ones in Whale Bay. Can you post the lum route you're currently using? That would help us figure it out.
Someone recently told me about a secret passage he found on the PC version. Here's his post:
I timed the whale bay skip to be 50 seconds faster if you get the trick first try. I grab an extra 10 lums beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava which is a 20 second detour. So In total it can save 30 seconds if done quickly. I don't know other lums that would be worth it that cost less time. I timed the 10 lums at the end of Tomb of the Ancients in the cage at 25 seconds compared to the ones in beneath the Sanctuary. Here is the lum route I use with the skips.
Checkpoints 1. 100 2. 300 3. 475 4. 550
Woods of Light: 5 Fairy Glade: 19, use gate skip Marshes: 49 Bayou: 49 Checkpoint 1: 122 Sanctuary Water/Ice: use orb skip, 41 Menhir Hills 1: 17 Cave of Bad Dreams: 48, plus 1 from marshes Menhir Hills 2: 8 Canopy: 40, use globox text skip, use flower skip Whale Bay: 33, palm tree clip Checkpoint 2: 310 Sanctuary Stone/Fire: 10 Echoing Caves: 27 Precipice: 49 Top of the World: 46 Sanctuary Rock/Lava: 48 Checkpoint 3: 488 Beneath Rock/Lava: 46 Tomb of the Ancients: 14, or whatever amount you need Checkpoint 4: 550
I've really have been having the worst luck with runs. Hopefully I can turn things around soon. I'm lucky to get runs out of the Cave of Bad Dreams or even to the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire. I usually reset if I lose 45 seconds to a minute.
I'm going to test out that secret passage thing... very interesting.
EDIT: Shot around for 5 minutes straight with no luck. I ordered a dreamcast version that should be here this week. I'll test it out once I get to that point.
Okay so my Dreamcast copy of Rayman 2 came in and I've made a list of what glitches/tricks work and don't. I've recorded some stuff and will upload once I finish my play through.
Tricks and techniques that work like normal: Quick Drop Fast Helicopter Mega Jumps while sliding Wrong Grabs Flying Barrel Glitch Damage Boosting Acute angle clips
*The only trick that doesn’t work is canceling the death animation by holding the head
Distinct Differences: When falling from a high distance Rayman gets flattening as if he was squashed by a monkey pirate You can’t switch the resolution of video from high to low. There is no option to change the language The game doesn't count the globox pieces as part of 100% or the cages (like PC and N64)
You can skip the opening cutscene
Escape -Auto jump doesn’t work cause the slide starts as soon as you walk out
Woods of Light -Murphy text skip should be possible, even though the text trigger is in a different spot. -Could not get the ledge grab after lum 4 -Baby globox text skip works -Cutscene storage works
Fairy Glade Section 1 -Got the walk under water trick but could not swim in the air -Could not walk around during the gate opening cutscene -There is a large gap and a piranha leading to the generator
Section 2 -The vines aren’t connected all the way around the corners of the tree -There is an extra piranha next to the last lum on the vines
Section 3 -There is a pirate waiting on the last box underground -Murphy text skip should work -Couldn’t get to the gate quick enough to skip fighting the pirate in the keg room
Section 4 -There is a pirate right before the power generator room -There is a laser right after the purple lum and right before the exit
Section 5 -On the bottom is a globox mini game piece and text which can be skipped -The murphy text for the wind gusts is right near the entrance of the wind room, it can be jumped over -There is a pirate shooting propellor bombs making the wind room more difficult
Marshes of Awakening -The Hold head during sam cutscene glitch works
The Bayou
Section 1 -You can skip the opening cutscene -You can’t walk around during the first boat cutscene -I had trouble hitting the last cage by ricocheting shots off the wall
Section 2 -Nothing to note
Walk of Life -Nothing different
Sanctuary of Water and Ice -There is a piranha leading to the first cage -The quick drop doesn’t work The cage at the end of the water tunnel is on the ceiling, the globox piece is on the ground -Door skip and the swim out of bounds trick should work
Menhir hills -Everything works as it would on PC or N64
Cave of Bad Dreams -Orb skip works -Jano cutscene skip before the slide works -The first skull cycle is replaced by a rotating platform -The Skull cycle after the purple lums is replaced by a platform as well -By holding up on the exit cutscene I was warped directly out of the marshes and the elixir worked with Clark
Canopy -Only things that don’t work are the door skip at the end and the Teensy dance skip
Whale Bay Section 1 -Swim oob glitch works -The last cage can be hit as soon as you blast open the door -Couldn’t get lamp jump to work
Section 2 -Palm tree skip works -On switch text skip to free Carmen you have to jump to the bottom of the stairs on the wood
Section 3 -You can skip cutscene walking out of the boat -You can skip the Teensy dance by running straight to the exit
Sanctuary of Stone and Fire -Wrong grab at beginning works -Plum oob after secret shrine doesn’t work (can’t get plum to upper section) -Mini boss skip works with fuzzy boost -Orb skip is hard as hell -Wheel turn cutscene skip in the lava river should work theoretically since the areas are on one map -Umber cutscene death warp works
Echoing Caves Section 1 -Door clip doesn’t work -PC door skip with plum/air swim works -The propellor pads only move when jumped on?? I believe they are always moving on N64 -Ran into a bug where the yellow lums actors were not visible when re-entering the main area from underground or from the propellor section. I was able to grab the lums though.
Section 2 -Flying barrel glitch and out of bounds work -Fairy glade section when near the pirate fort was very laggy.
The Precipice -Only thing thats different is not being able to auto jump after the cannonballs hit the planks in section 3
Top of the World -Everything works
Sanctuary of Rock and Lava Section 1 -Interesting looking monster in the swamp. It was in the Marshes of Awakening too. -The cage is a lot lower so you can just jump and shoot it.
Section 2 -Wrong grab doesn’t work -The cage in the last room is in a different spot. It’s right near the switch and the exit. -There is also a pirate blocking the exit
Section 3 -There is a pirate at the top of the rotating pillar -Teensy dance skip and “Yeah” text skip work
Walk of Power -Nothing different
Beneath Sanctuary of Rock and Lava Section 1 -There is a pirate on the path to the first cage in the secret tunnel. The cage is also sitting on a platform -There is a pirate at the end of the last section on one of the lone platforms
Section 2 -There are 2 pirtes in the cage tunnel towards the end -Foutch skip doesn’t work
Tomb of the Ancients Section 1 -Switch skip for 2 and 3 work -The last round of pirates can be skipped for the 1000th lum
Section 2 -In the optional section the cage high on the ceiling can be hit with shots and switching to first person on the floating keg
Section 3 & 4 -Everything works as on PC or N64
Iron Mountains Section 1 -There are infinite piranhas jumping over the wooden planks in the beginning -You can skip one of the switches like on other versions -After the laser room there is a pirate shooting propellor bombs that spawns behind you and a piranha in the swamp section -The open area has netting to climb on the boxes
Section 2 -In the fort the cage is hanging on the bottom of the bridge -The jump over the gate is possible but very hard -Awkward to maneuver around the big machine to get the 5 lums under the rocks. I was tilting side ways a lot and blew up randomly into the ground -It looks possible to reach the platform that leads to the areas exit without the shell. I've managed to activate the cutscene where the top and bottom of the screen goes black and you lose control of Rayman but I fell to my death.
Section 3 -There is a pirate guarding the 5 lum behind you when you start the area -The quick strat to grab the 5 lum doesn’t work. You need the plum -There is another pirate on the broken boats leading to the final section
Prison Ship Slide section -I can’t climb back up the slope for the missing lums
Section 2 -Fast pirate strat works
There is an extra cutscene with Rayman saving teensies and baby globoxes
Crows Nest In the isle of doors rayman ran around the whole area then went to the Crows Nest. Not sure what caused this. Unlimited ammo is still there
I've uploaded a video of some tricks and other differences. I've also updated my list on the above post. I'd like to note out trick 9 at 4:22. You can grab the ledge after hitting the switch in the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava in section 2. (The area with the purple platforms) I've tried this on PC and N64 but never gotten it.
EDIT:
Found by Sobinist. It is dreamcast only but saves a good 1:30-2:00. I also show what happens when you fall long distances.

Nice. I've also tried that on N64, but I've never made it. It looks like you made it with quite a bit of height to spare in that video.

Nice! I never thought of clipping out of bounds there.
Hi there; just started speedrunning (or at least attempting to) this game. I looked through the entire thread and couldn't help but notice the Gameshark moonjump cheat video, where something rather interesting occurred. Rayman, despite going to The Precipice after beating the Echoing Caves, had the pirate cutscene for The Bayou play. Afterwards, he wound up in the Bayou, warping him all the way back. As far as I can tell, this means that the pirate cutscenes run on some sort of internal counter, and each cutscene warps Rayman to the respective level. If there is a way to manipulate the counter in-game somehow, through menu-glitching or who-knows-what, it might be possible to beat the entirety of Rayman 2 by only going through 4 levels. If you can change the value of the counter so that it plays the cutscene for The Prison Ship, then when you attempt to enter The Bayou you'd instead skip 80% of the entire game. This would take a 2-hour speedrun and cut it down to something around not even 30 minutes or so.
I'm going to start messing around with an emulator to see if I can't find the memory location that holds the value of this counter, if it exists. Odds are that it will be impossible to change it in-game, but at least I can try.
Hi. I've thought about ways to increase the "Buccaneer cutscene counter", but I haven't come up with anything. Looking at memory values with an emulator could be useful.
Yeah, I don't think something like that will ever happen. You'd probably need to find some insane glitch that would actually allow you to manipulate the Buccaneer cutscene counter. Also, welcome to the community. Maybe if you want to get deeper into this game and you want to ask/discuss things with other runners, there's a Skype group dedicated for Rayman 2 speedrunning.
Well, I managed to crash the game a few times while trying to make it easier to find that elusive counter. Doesn't help that you essentially have to beat half of the game just to get to the second pirate cutscene (I was trying to replicate moonjumping so I wouldn't have to). I did find the location of the Lum counter, though. Oddly enough, you can't "add" lums to your score though. No matter what I try, despite the counter incrementing normally regardless of what value I cram in there, it still knows the right value to add to your full counter. Makes me wonder why it's even showing up in the first place.
Also, playing on an emulator after playing on the N64 forever is just terrible.
EDIT: Well, good news is that I found the Lum counter memory spot. There are three variables- your total number of lums, the displayed number of lums, and the "cap" value that, when the lum value starts incrementing upwards to reach, will tell it to stop. Freezing that cap at 0 will cause it to keep incrementing- going to experiment with the consequences.
So aside from this cute little thing I wanted to ask something. Has anyone ever timed the difference between jumping through the lasers in Whale Bay 2 vs. turning them off with the switch first? I would time it but the issue is that I can't freaking perform the jump through the lasers
If I recall, either Unreal or Cheese managed to actually get hit by one of the pirate's bullets halfway across the cap, which, when coupled with quickflight, lets you make the jump without killing him. I tried doing it around 30 times and never did manage to get it to work, however.
If there wasn't a video, I wouldn't even consider it possible. As far as I can tell, there's no good setup for it either, and going for it wastes so much time if you fail. It's just not worth it for something that, after trying, I'm convinced is frame-perfect (the bullet travels so fast that you have to not only be at the right height for when he shoots the bullet at you, but then be at the right height for when you actually hit the bullet, that it must be frame-perfect), so I'll stick with the method that involves less screaming at the screen.
I don't run this game, but the conversation around the "Pirate's bullet + quickflight" skip brings back memories of this amazing "Use reborn's head as a trampoline" trick in the Jedi Outcast run by recon
