I've found a LOT of time savers actually since I finished the run such as attacks that would be ideal for just releasing on against Vergil and just the fact that, well, I think it could be infinitely better so... I got nuthin' to say for that P.S.

Maybe it's because I'm always seeing these exhibition royal guard videos where they're doing perfect just releases with perfect just guards on every damn thing in the level, taking out Agni and Rudra or Beowulf or whatever in a single Just Release, things like that.  Of course, I don't know what difficulty that they're recorded on and there's no way in hell I can get a level 3 royal guard before mission 18, but it still bugs the hell out of me that my play looks absolutely mediocre in comparison to a guy who's been orb warping through every damn thing in the stage to the point where he's just releasing on ANYTHING that moves sending them skyward for a massive, excessive but oh so BEAUTIFUL smackdown of epic proportions.

I kinda feel like how Lecourer or however the name is spelled felt like when he saw the Mario 64 TAS.  Only except it WASN'T a TAS I'm watching but rather completely and utterly perfect gameplay from a human player...

It still makes for a good reference point though, since it IS about as fast as you can expect Dante to get between the guard cancels, just releases and such on a fresh Dante run, even if my playstyle needs cleaning up desperately to what Vergil's doing which... really can't get better.  I'm trying to avoid exhibition videos this time though while I'm producing the Vergil run so I can actually submit it and feel good about it...

Any progress on the run? I'm dying to see more. Grin

I actually played through normal / hard / very hard Vergil mode since I bumped this topic, so now I have a better idea of what you're doing. Smiley Still I don't know how you owned agni and rudra so badly..
Progress looks to be slow, partly from just having so many work hours last week (And this week as well), partly from the fact that jump cancelling Vergil with Starfall 2 DT'ed consistently is a BITCH, and partly because I won't take anything less than an S on mission 7 because it's entirely possible.  Granted, the restrictions are VERY tight for 7, just because I won't be able to afford more than a B ranking in style thanks to all the jump cancels I'll be doing between the Hell Vanguard and Vergil (Which doesn't do much for style) and jump cancelling such a tiny target like Vergil after a 6 minute endurance testing melee like mission 7... eh.

Mission 7 - 5:26

I've tried.  And on some grounds, I feel as if I've really topped myself with this segment, providing the once groan inducing mission 7 and crushing it, getting far better ratings than I imagined for this level.  Not an SS, mind you, but pretty damn close.

Time- 5:26 S
Orbs- 10140 S
Stylish Pts.- 4224 A
Damage- 0 S
ItemUsed- 0 S

Oh, I'm big shit now.

Of course, as with any run, there's a handful of problems that could be remedied still.  For starters, the Hell Vanguard and Vergil both give me a semi-rotten hand.  They cooperate, clearly they do, but the Hell Vanguard feels content to teleport a bit early, block a bit more often, and all in all, probably cost me 2 or 3 seconds otherwise.

Vergil meanwhile, the problem was mine.  I FINALLY managed to do the DTed jump cancelling Starfalls... but when it came time to do the NORMAL jump cancelling starfalls, I lost any and all resemblance of rhythmn and fell on my ass in a spectacular manner serveral times before going "Screw this" and trying to get him back into a fresh stun lock so I could start things off right.  Devil triggered.

No video though.  Not yet, anyway.  I've got a new 34" TV up here and I've had to rearrange my room significantly to fit it.  Because of this, I need to get longer composite cables to run to my computer, I'm sorry to say.

Regardless, it's good stuff I assure you.

The best part though is that I'm past this infernal stage and into one that is remarkably easier than this B.S...

Can I get this in an extra large? Because if I could, MAN I'd be all over it.

Edit: This is why I don't do my own videos.  I started capturing way too early apparently and I got part of a failed attempt in there.  Skip forward to about 1:34 to the final product.
So you don't need to destroy that statue to get the orb fragment.. didn't know that.

Anyways, great job on this latest segment! I find it funny seeing one brother stomping on another brother's head. Grin

Mission 8- 4:17

http://rapidshare.de/files/21301312/Vergil_8.avi.html

May not be final product, but most I expect to get is another four seconds off, so no foul in letting you see what I'm up to. The first and most annoying part IS the beginning due to the random firing spread of Vergil's Phantom Swords, but as you see here, that's not an issue this go around. Everything else goes great, though I take damage in the Retina Room (Though it literally costs me NOTHING but annoying none the less), I also found out that a DT'ed Vergil is far more powerful against a single target than a DTE (And a DT Dante has NOTHING on Vergil damage over time wise) against the boss. Also, it protects me from any obnoxious stuns...

Last, I'm sure you're wondering "WTF" with that Starfall in the Stomach again. Well, I'll tell you. A Demon is supposed to materialize on top of the bus so I target him and jump. However, apparently I need to figure out WHAT the timing was, and ALSO avoid locking onto the other enemies that warp in at around the same time. The ideal movement has me starfall into the enemy, cancel into a jump (Causing the poor envy to fall on his ass) and strut into the Intestines again like the big shit I am...

4:17 S rank.

Funny enough, this is where Dante's even competition for Vergil inbetween his Stingers and Royal Guard on the boss (4:13 was my Dante RG time). Still pretty sad Dante! Also, I've been able to cut 9 minutes off my RG run officially speaking.

Random musing... I hate the overall game timer in this game. I manage to pull off a 4:17 to start with and I do an improved run coming out to... get this, an ENTIRE SECOND FASTER!  THEN I save the game and MY SAVE FILE CLOCK REPORTS IT BEING FIVE WHOLE SECONDS FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE!!

GAH!  I wish Capcom never implemented a god damned overall time clock!

The biggest time saver?  The fact that the menu navigation was much faster thanks to an insignificant little bug I abuse where the game's save file seems to forget where the cursor is supposed to be and puts it on Yamato by default for faster purchasing when it comes to the Judgement Cut.

Yes, the extent of my months of speed running prowness and all the time spent in this damn game and all I got to show for it is a bug that's COMPLETELY useless.  No ghetto jumps or sequence breaks here!  A damn bug that resets a CURSOR.  Go me!

... but I'm gonna keep this segment, just because I KNOW I can't do any better without REALLY pinching everything out of this game. Feh. At least the boss battle's amusing.

The differences between this and the posted video? Well, I get turned around by an obnoxious twitch of the thumb during a camera angle change in some intestines somewhere, but I made up for it by Devil Triggering for about three orbs and running around like a looon. The boss battle's improved a bit since I don't DTE and end up taking more health off him in the first pass and... the Retina Room is ALWAYS fun.

I also don't bust the boil when Starfalling at the very start. A shame, I know.  And instead of being TOTALLY disorienting, the Starfall jump I do in the return trip to Leviathan's stomach... still messes up.

But I only need to do two Starfall Jumps vs. Three!

*#@$^~!

Mission 9 should be fascinating, actually. Been playing it JUST A BIT in-between attempts to improve my current 4:17 Mission 8. Huh. I can get Nevan down in about four vulnerability phases, though the greatest improvement here just comes from the Judgement Cut which I picked up in mission 8. To get a good idea of where I'm at, I was able to get about a 5:34 S rank without much effort in a first playthrough. There'll be ways to improve this, if not just a bit, though it just BARELY edges out RG Dante at this point.

RG Dante gets a lot of stuff to play with in this stage, including a lot of ledges to Dash/Stinger off of, and a boss fight that is so Royal Guard Friendly it's ridiculous, not to mention the fact that Dante has a lot of elemental vulnerable enemies to slaughter in this stage. I'm pretty sure in fact that Dante and Vergil are going to continue being toe to toe until mission 11, just because of the difference in movement speed Dante has over Vergil thanks to Stinger Cancelling, and it'll go back to being more in Vergil's favor until mission 15 and 17 which should be FUUUUUUUUN....

And yeah, changed the name of the thread since when I MADE this thread, there was like almost as many DMC3 threads as there was OOT threads now... but now I can't see the point in keeping the name the same since I'm the only thread devoted to the game now....

Plus, I feel like making things difficult once in a whie.
Can't wait to see the new vid!

Mission 9.. I love mission 9.. I love Nevan.. :heartbeat:

Mission 9 5:01.

Damge... 0.

Wooooo!

There's a few problems here and there, mostly with having to deal with the damn Camera Angle switches throughout the game which results me in tricking in place in mid air at one point and getting turned around in a Rounded Hallway.

My strategy for the arachnoids is to pretty much coax them  into attacking or trying to block and once they do, juggle the HELL out of them.  There's nothing else to it.  I feel sorry for the poor arachnoids in the Ambrosia room though.  Just... ouch guys.  Damn.  You know, there's gonna always be some guy who's bigger and beats the frickin' crap out of you, but FUCK you got your asses kicked!

And the Nevan fight is frickin' SWEET, taking off about 85% of her health in two passes VERY quickly and then forcing her into her death kiss to beat the hell outta her and finish the fight.  It's inspiring to say the least.

http://rapidshare.de/files/21383932/Vergil_9.avi.html
Wow... that really was awesome. I think you'd have a very hard time trying to beat that. Shocked

I'm guessing that your final time of the whole run will not be the overall time that is shown, right? I was perplexed when your 2:14:34 run was just as long as the avi file... I'd thought the game wouldn't count absolutely everything.

Mission 10 - 3:18

Man.... I hate this mission.  Not because it's a HARD mission, not by any means.  But I just had a hell of a time figuring out a strategy for the Provisions Storeroom that you had to haul ass through at the end of the stage.  It's a shame though.  Unlike mission 9 I do take two blows un-dt'ed (One Dt'ed, I think) right at the end as if to spite me.

But, it also has the most bad ass moment of the run right on the final blow against the first wave of the arachnoid fight.  So sit back, enjoy the ass kicking, and I'll be scheming for how to handle the Beowulf fight which I personally guarentee to be entertaining.

Now if only I could figure out how to spell guarentee...

Man, you're really pumping them out aren't you? Cheesy

I went "holy shit!" when you killed that first wave of arachnids. I will remember this highlight whenever someone asks for clips for a music video or something. Wink
Mission 11 - 3:55

Would you believe that this segment took me over 3 hours to produce? Ugh. The first hour was spent figuring out the fastest and most ideal way to handle the Soul Eaters in the first room. "Oh, well I'll just run past them and Starfall." "Oh, I'll just run past them and jump cancel the Starfall!" Every damn time I tried to figure out the best way to DO this god damn section the bastards would start moving around, or they'd be all obnoxious and attack, there was no middle ground.

Finally, I remembered Ifrit who did a recent Mega Man 8 run talking about how he shoud have tried to crash into unavoidable enemies backwards so he can get knocked forward rather than back and... it just hit me.

The only thing that can REALLY be improved in this stage is the Beowulf fight since I get knocked back during a judgement cut and I don't nearly score as many critical hits as I'd have hoped but.... well, I'll think about going back to it. At most, it would have been another five to seven seconds saved.

In the mean time, here ya go. 3:55 S rank. I'm sure an SS would cost all of 5 seconds more if you were to just hit the hitten orb cache near the tram...

Very impressive. I liked how you handled everything before the wagon. I didn't even know about using starfall on those.. flying things.

It's too bad you got hit in the Beowulf fight right at the end though. :-/

Actually, the unintentional blows in that fight against me was when I got hit during the Judgement Cut since he didn't take his time swinging it and his Volcano attack since the timing is so odd to trick evade... or at least I think so.  By default you wanna dodge the second you see the light shoot up, but that isn't WHEN you're supposed to avoid...

Anyway, you'll notice when he charged towards me and I DT'ed, I had charged it up before hand to make a Devil Trigger Explosion, hitting him and getting "Damage Boosted" into the proper direction to smack him around some more.  That was entirely 100% deliberate and part of my strategy.  I'm pretty certain that it also prematurely ends Beowulf's charging bit.

And what's wrong with the Wagon?  It goes excellent with Vergil's Phantom Swords frequently countering enigma arrows and nice touches like remaining locked onto enigmas and blasting them while still taking out Prides with Yamato's huge arcs and such.  The only blow I take right at the end costs no time whatsoever and there's really nothing I can do if a pride decides he's gonna spawn blocking (Which happens a lot and it's entirely uncontrollable...)

Mission 7 was great. But ... I really ... really ... hate this mission Grin It's becouse mine DMD! no item run ... this mission was just so frustrating ... the biggest number of fight that has to be won, plus Vanguard and Sloth (I think ... the summoners with coffins). Psycho ... no damage ... nice, nice Smiley

Mission 8 ... yes ... the Rising Dragon is best to win the Heart fight, so Vergil is little downgraded without this movement. I thought, that this will take at least 1 more time of beating the right chamber of heart (btw. ... is anyone in that fight aiming fot left part of heart?) ... just wow ... relief after beating it that quick Grin And question: is DT Explosion so helpfull in that fight ... I mean ... if You stayed in Devil form for longer You could cut heart longer ...

Mission 9 - I hate spiders ... Nice, fast fights ... with 0 damage Grin And ... I am the one that do not like Nevan ... maybe as a character, but not as a boss.

Mission 10 - catwalk ... on the catwalk ... Hehe. Nice, fast and noble run ... the last spider spoiled the perfection (another reason to hate them). 4 S is a very good mark.

Mission 11 - so ... I didn't saw yet Grin

For now You are a fighting, warhungry machine ... with lightspeed time of giving new files Grin Good luck with next ones

As for Nevan ...
I prefer Beowulf - IMO best boss fight in game. Challenging, but not frustrating. good combo Cheesy

>.>  Well, Mission 12 has me totally stumped.  I've seen a DMD video where a player is able to consistently stun Geryon without him freezing the player and running off but when I try, it's horribly inconsistent.  I'm wondering if it's because I can't do all that much damage and I'm not hitting some sort of unseen quota to triggering the attack with Vergil, or the player just got lucky a lot...

But then again I've seen the same thing done with Dante using Real Impacts, so I'm almost certain that it has to be just a lack of damage output on my part.
Quote:
the Geryon loop works 100% of the time in DMD, not in other difficulties. What you do w/ Vergil is to continuously attack w/ Lunar Phase. Possible Lunar Phase->Beo punch->repeat, all while spamming summoned swords to make it sure and to do bigger damage faster.

If all else fails, DTing during the Lunar Phase helps. The only time you'll be in trouble is if Geryon's rear back animation lifts Vergil up in the air, thus disabling Lunar phase til you get back down, thus potentially ruining the loop.

Ah DAMMIT!  Looks like I need to come up with a new strategy against Geryon.... gonna be a bit longer before a new video appears.
Since I'm completely baffled as to handle mission 12, I've gone back and redid mission 11 to "Correct" some of the glaring issues (Lots of hits, namely).

I've managed to clean up the level significantly, taking only 350 damage points thanks to a stray souleater in the Altar of Evil fight that struck Vergil who was DT'ed at the time, but there's a few problems along with a major fix. Namely, my Starfall onto the tram goes well and the Beowulf fight is over MUCH sooner than before. How much sooner? Beowulf got downed when once he knocks the forth pillar at Vergil by Judgement Cuts.

Yeah, that sucker was down FAST.

However, the tram battle is not nearly as incredible the first time through. In fact, I hate to admit it, but it looks "Newbish." I do a lot of Lunar Kicks that hit no one, I swing at the air a lot, my weapon switching was outta whack, pretty much almost everything that COULD go wrong on that tram did. I'm pretty sure that I didn't lose any time though, just because of the fact that most of the spawns seem timed...

The Altar of Evil room also had an obnoxious part where one Soul Eater couldn't be damaged until he re-teleported. However, that happens all too frequently so it's kind of expected. Still cost me two or three seconds...

And I was also just made aware thanks to guitarslinger44 and Da_Dood that there's in fact a third holy water hidden in the game in a not-so-obvious spot in mission 14. Namely, right near the end, if you go around the back of the building on the right side of the screen there's not only a hidden orb cache on top of the truck, but a holy water hidden right next to it.

On TOP of that, Kip, also on the Gamefaqs boards tipped me off concerning a trick that could allow me to wake up the King in the Mission 18 Chessboard brawl by using, you guessed it, a holy water to wake him up early.

Extra holy water, extra 25-45 seconds saved at the LEAST, not to mention that the 2:14:34 is still up on S.D.A. when I've already improved it by two minutes BEFORE hearing about this...

Namely, I'm revisiting Dante Single Segment as soon as I'm done with Vergil, and Vergil WILL be using this trick. He should also have an extra holy water at the end of this all thanks to the recent discovery and because I refuse to use a Holy Water on DULLAHANS of all things in mission 14 so I save 30,000 orbs too... I think.
I hope you find a solution to level 12. I personally hate this level since I have such a hard time with Geryon... Angry
Alright, I'm done. Simple as that. I'm DONE with this stage.

Mission 12: 5:06 S Rank.

Everything goes exceptional. The Starfalls all work out minus the one in the Altar of Evil (But it's a blind shot that doesn't pan out half the time anyway since it's generally there to help sneak in a hit on a lust which strafe around a lot), my combat is superb in all three scenarios, and Geryon is acceptable. I'm done.
