Mission 13 - 2:30 S rank.

A very easy mission for the most obvious reasons.  There's only one mandatory fight which is very simple and generally predictable enough to make a consistent strategy for, there's lots of running, and a boss fight who, although he gets a new movelist can be handled in the exact same manner without penalty.

Two comments.  One, I'm sure you guys think that the second Judgement Cut is a bit unnecessary and you're right a bit there.  Normally though, the Bishop holds off on the fire attack and stays away from the crowd for a second so the Judgement Cut was always the safest way to handle it, and the fastest.

Plus, I love Judgement Cut.

Secondly, I just started spamming phantom swords and basic combos near the end of the Vergil fight just because I knew the fight was coming to an end and the 13 hit limit with stuns (Phantom Swords count as 1 for each one that connect, every non-knockback move counts as one, a knock back move like the final kick in the Beowulf combo counts two) became less of a concern.  I think it works out well, really...

The Geryon battle was nice. Of course I suck at it so what do I know. Tongue

Anyways, it's still looking impressive. Can't wait to see more.
Mission 14 - 4:16

Fun mission.  And... not really the sarcastic kind of fun either.  If I was playing this with Dante, I'd be busy whining and lamenting about how miserable it all is.  Vergil's version (And the S.E. version in itself) is so much more entertaining in the end.  Maybe it's because it's the first part in the game where I really need to manage and keep my DT up for the DTEs and the final DT'ed sprint that kept me on my toes the entire time.

That, and the Damned Knights and Bishops actually give me a reason to jump cancel Aerial Raves...

Nothing really needs commenting here.  Everything is pretty tight combat wise.  The only things that can be improved is in the Altar of Evil, to leave the fifth Dullahan I kill for last since it'd put me closer to the exit.  In Hell's Highway, hope for better movement on the pawn's part (Not to mention the fact that the game insisted on locking on to the furthest away target when I was trying to jump cancel the lot of them) and... don't get hit by the fireballs, obviously.

Holy mother of ****ING Hamster Jesus God, I am SICK of mission 15! Not that I actually HAVE a run to show, or even recorded just because of the insane amount of luck NECESSARY to complete a stage in an ideal time (Which all comes together for the Gears of Madness section which is at the VERY END of the run) AND an excellent platforming performance on your part. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, HATE the COMPLETE lack of a double jump here for Vergil, but not nearly as much as I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, HATE this stage!

There's so many things that can go wrong with an otherwise perfect run right at the end, since the Gears of Madness by default is performed last. There's the bloodgoyles to piss me off REGARDLESS, the complete inability for Vergil to keep on on the gear near the runeclock to do consistant swipes, the leap to the gear running up and down MUST be near the very bottom, and then there's TONS more places you can get whacked, maimed, and all in all, have a useless waste of video.

GAAAAAAAAAH!  This single stage is why I'm never bothering with a single segment Vergil!

I'm still working on it, just insanely frustrated.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Are you skipping the Arachne battles? At least if you do, it takes less time to get back to the Gears of Madness.

As to the runeclock, have you tried repeated aerial raves>Starfall/Helm Breaker? Dunno if it'd be faster, depending on how long it takes to do it while standing.

I thought you could wall jump onto the moving gear? I'll have to check on that.

Actually, I figured it out.

I got a mission 15 time of around 4:41 which is not bad at all.  Most of it's fairly obvious.  Of COURSE I skip all of the arachne fights (2, 4, 2, 2 on the rune clocks to skip that final battle with Vergil, it seems) making the Fallens the only enemies I have to take care of which are done and over with thanks to a Holy Water, and I also handle that last rune clock in the Gears of Madness by using Lunar Kicks and Beowulf's basic 4 hit combo, since the Force Edge's default combo which I NORMALLY use on the clocks in this stage (Thanks to the fact that Beowulf seems to get Vergil all misplaced otherwise on the stationary dials and end up missing a lot) is far too slow to keep up with the wheel.

The thing is that I rely a lot on Aerial Raves with Yamato to both clear the traps in the Rounded Hallway, since otherwise it's somewhat inconsistent if I'd even clear the trap without it, and when I'm navigating the Gears of Madness, I use it to ensure I won't fall down when leaping from the bottom gear to the top ledge.

I do use a wall jump to get up to the rising and lowering gear, since I miss my once chance to leap onto it directly (Major props to Rustedfaith of PB forums for pointing that out).  I think that the way I handle the Rounded Hallway could make this a remotely easy time to beat, but when I use say Beowulf or try to jump over naturally, I always get caught on one of the traps anyway...

I'd post a video, but recently my video card's gone to hell and... well, everything's being a major bitch.  Like so.

I figured you knew how to do it.  So in the Gears of Madness room you just ignore the Bloodgoyles? I tried that, but I kept getting knocked away from the Rune Clock. Then again, I was trying to do it with Aerial Rave.

Devil Trigger FTW.  I use it in both the Gears of Madness and in getting the fragment with the two soul eaters in the room (Though it'd prove unnecessary in the mission I recorded thanks to the fact that the soul eaters went straight into a wall when they attacked, rather than at Vergil) to avoid any sort of stun.  On a high note, I got my capture card working again, though my Video Card's gone, so I'll be uploading the video soon.

Edit : Video!

http://rapidshare.de/files/23457107/Vergil_15.avi.html

I notice one thing watching back.  When I hit the rune clock in the Gears of Madness the first time and the cutscene plays, I forget to release the lock on button, hence the second or two lost assaulting random bloodgoyles... may have to go back and re-do that...
just wanna ask, how dyou do the Yamato Aerial Rave spam, where you can repeatedly execute it infinitely?

Why the aerial raves in the rounded pathway? Can't you just jump right over them?

I noticed you have a lot of orbs, are you saving them for anything?

First, I thought I addressed that, but I use the Aerial Raves mostly for the extra hover time (And distance) they grant.  You CAN jump over them without it, but when I would try, I would almost ALWAYS get caught on at least one of the traps in the Rounded Passageway when I didn't.  I admit it's way too conservative a strategy, especially for a segmented level, but my patience with the level at that point was non-existant (And plus, if I hadn't, I'd have hit the very last trap on the return trip.  Look how close I was to landing on the thing).  Everything else in that stage is fairly well optimized.  I probably should redo it and try to save the five seconds otherwise though...

But admit it, that Starfall through the first two blades in the Altar of Evil Passageway was just TOO awesome.  That was a huge accident there... but I like it!

As for the orbs, I have to still buy five holy waters.  In my Dante runs, I would often go ahead and stock up on holy waters when I change out Agni and Rudra for Beowulf in Mission 14 just because I need three holy waters anyway in the 14-16 stretch.

With Vergil, thanks to the fact they changed up enemy spawns in mission 14 to have dullahans instead of bloodgoyles at the Altar of Evil fight and the fact that I find that extra holy water at the end of mission 14 means I simply haven't run out of holy waters yet or had a reason to buy anything ever since mission 8.  I probably won't need to buy anything until at least mission 18 for that matter (The Holy Water for the Chess Board to wake up the King early).

I admit, I often used my Dante single and multi-segment runs as an idea of the orb totals I can expect for Vergil, but I'm also just buying so much fewer items in general (And Vergil often ranks higher anyway) that now I realize it's kind of moot to really compare the two.

If I DO buy anything else though... I don't know.  I imagine future runs could make use of extra purple orbs or maybe even Spiral Swords if someone can think of a decent application for them (Cerberus Rematch maybe, and against the Arkham legions or even Arkham himself?)

I can see in a single segment the Spiral Swords being VERY effective for Beowulf to help guarentee you can shatter the columns before they hit you and in the Cerberus rematch or against Bloodgoyles which admittingly, are often few and far apart in the Special Edition (And especially easy to dispatch).  Probably make a world of difference in that mission 15 hell though.

I could also probably get Rapid Slash for handling the legions, but I'm not sure if it's really necessary, or if Aerial Raves would be sufficient.  Or if Spiral Swords is ideal for handling the Legions BETTER than the Spiral Swords.

I'll find out sometime in the coming days.

Also, the reason why no updates in a while is that I've been trying to figure out how to jump cancel Beowulf on Lady.  I just can't nail it!  I mean she's the same size as Vergil or a pride, but I can't get the timing for some odd reason.  If I could (And I've been told it's possible) I could dominate that boss fight so fast it's not even funny.

And now I finally get to this question.  I'm preachy today.  Anyway, it's simple if you know how to jump cancel with Beowulf.  Essentially, you have to be REALLY close to an enemy to pull it off (I recommend trying to learn how to do it by using a high time on a Hell or an Abyss (And make sure to go up along with the enemy when you do) and then switching to yamato).  When you do an aerial rave, the moment you see the sword graphic appear in front of Vergil, press the jump button and then attack instantly again.

A good example which makes it very clear is in mission 14 against that one bishop at 4:08-4:12.  It gives you a good idea of the timing required to do it.  You can see every hop I do and everything.  Once you can do it, it pretty much becomes a matter of knowing when you're close enough to an enemy to rebound off them.

OH!  And by the by, you can only do it on the first slash of Aerial Rave.  Otherwise, you'll just fall to the ground.

Mission 16: 4:41

...... You know, Lady has always been a boss to always catch me by surprise due to the fact that she's so... inconsistent sometimes.  By that, I mean, going up against Beowulf, for example.  He'll always putz around, let you slash his eye, maybe counter attack, and at around half life he'll go ahead and begin running around to chuck pillars throughout the room.  Nevan will always start a fight zooming to one side of the room, doing her shadow attack, and then begin moving around a bit.  Cerberus has such obvious tells that he's a pushover.  And Vergil?  Please.  I have him down to a science.

But LADY.  Ugh.

Mission 16 started out well.  The fights all go great without any sort of issues and even the Bloodgoyles seem cooperative, a very rare sight.  I try to reserve enough Devil Trigger for insurance thanks to those damn enigmas in Cerberus' boss chamber.  Navigating the stage goes exceptionally well in the end and over all it's great.

The Lady fight is just... huh.  Everything goes according to plan at first.  I make it a point to keep my distance from her so she doesn't grapple away TOO often near the beginning.  But then at around 5:55 after comboing her from a bookcase, I see her start to move the launcher around, so I turn to begin getting in position to intercept the grapple before I realized... "Ah **** she's aiming at me!"  You could pratically see that infernal Metal Gear Solid exclamation point over my head as I rushed around her so that I wouldn't get a face full of rockets (Guess what game I'VE been playing lately!).  THEN!  After I combo her... she prepares ANOTHER Hysterics!  What the bleedin' 'ell?!

I'm just dumbfounded.  I was caught completely off guard by it and... sheesh.  I managed to save a ton more time than I anticipated, of course.  Damn shame I still can't nail that jump canceling on Lady (I may just abandon the concept in favor of this... favorable boss fight) or this would just have been incredible.  I would have probably saved five seconds at least (The time I spent waiting for the final combo opening) if I did it right.

I would like to apologize for the audio quality right now.  When I was compressing this run, I noticed it was chugging a good bit and I can't figure out why.  I really need to defragment this machine tonight before my new card comes in.  But anyway, there's some sound desync here.

Mission 17 in 3:44

Awesome, awesome stuff.  I finally purchase the five holy waters here (There ya go, BallofSnow) since it's both the first stage I COULD afford all 5, and because I want to save my sanity on mission 18.  You can only rebuy this stuff so many times before you start to lose it.

Awesome, awesome, awesome stage, an excellent abyss fight, 0 damage, and an easy boss fight to boot.  What can I say?  I like having a free level given to me on occasion.  The only mistake I make in this stage shows up right at the very end when I dt and try to combo the Doppleganger prematurely.  It probably didn't even add five seconds to my time though...

Gotta love those Aerial Rave Jump Cancels.

http://rapidshare.de/files/24245263/Vergil_17.avi.html

Again, audio quality is iffy, thanks to the desync right at the boss fight (And the weird way the sound... well, you'll notice).  I would have waited until I defragmented and cleaned up my HDD a little, but this was REALLY good stuff.
Wow mission 16 was very nice. You got very lucky with Lady!

I'll watch 17 when the rapidshare timelimit is done..
Mission 18 is definitely going to be interesting.  I've  been working out a new strategy for Beowulf I've been dying to try ever since I saw the Deadly Eclipse video byt Xarugas and Integesta (MORE jump cancelling of the Aerial Rave variety right on his critical hit point).  I'm also trying to get the timing down on using Yamato's Aerial Rave to parry Agni and Rudra's attacks, rather than leaving it up to chance with Lunar Phase.  Last, I FINALLY pick up Spiral Swords for use against Cerberus.

There's going to be a WHOLE lot of improvements on these three bosses vs. when I first went up against them.  Cerberus, more for the fact that I couldn't afford Spiral Swords when I was up against him.  Agni and Rudra I doubt I could do much faster than the first time around, but Beowulf is just one of those bosses that could be improved on the first time around (And it should be very entertaining).

Another MAJOR improvement over the Dante run will be made here when I use a holy water on the Chess Board.  This strategy REALLY does work well.  You can have the King up and about before the first pawn gets going and since the Rooks are still apparently inactive, there's no King Switching going on at ALL.  This mission is going to be the one MAJOR reason I'm redoing the Dante Single Segment sometime after I submit this one...
Whoa, it's been a long time since the last post.

Any progress on mission 18?
Basically, Agni and Rudra are good, Cerberus is good, I'd like to learn to rebound the king (But until then my basic strategy of going in there and button mashing like hell works, I just can't guarentee I'll be out of the way of the King's explosion), but Beowulf is the major issue.  I'm still trying to figure out the best way to jump cancel him.  I got a video from Gemasis that illistrates where, but yeah.  Still going at it.

Aw, thanks a lot.  I've been trying to improve mission 17 a lot (Figured there's about ten seconds I could save with an ideal execution against the Dullahans and with better luck in the Trial of Skill) but I've yet to be able to replicate the double-Abyss jump cancel correctly which makes me very sad.  >.>

God I'm shallow.

I'm ALMOST ready to record mission 18.  I've figured out Beowulf's general sweet spot and I got an idea of how I'll handle the rest of the stage so I'll let you guys know what comes up.

Psychochild: 2006-07-17 04:29:45 am
Well... Beowulf's being a bitch, but I've gotten a few queries about what my chessboard looks like, soooooo...

http://rapidshare.de/files/26049286/Chess.avi.html

I ultimately had to reject that run, but the Chessboard is very ideal, at least.  I position myself there before the holy water because 1.) If it's too far away, the King won't activate, and 2.) So the queen helps "Clear the way" for me...

Edit: A question.  Is it just me or do A*R gain more health and get significantly tougher in M18?  I used to have to worry about killing one early in the first combo but now that... really isn't the case.
Yeah, that was fast alright. Shocked
Edit history:
Psychochild: 2006-07-20 05:32:49 pm
What's fast, is currently what I have for Mission 18.

3:57.

I take a little over 4,000 points of damage, but quite frankly it is FAST.  I only get an A though since I get a D in orbs and a B in items.  Doesn't matter much anyways...

I won't be uploading the video just because I want to watch it a few times to make sure that this is what I want to display for Mission 18 and because I think I gotta give you guys SOMETHING to look forward to...

Edit: I'm going with it.  I manage to get caught in one of Beowulf's three hit combos (Two hits at that), I get nailed by an Agni fire attack from off screen, and I think I get bopped once by Cerberus but all in all, it's well performed.  I abandoned the idea of Jump Cancelling Beowulf's head as a lost cause (Though if the person proceeding me is going to try to tackle this run, this better damn well be a part of it, or I'll be going right back in to get the record back!).

Mission 19 - 3:02

.... Heh.  Heh.  Heh.

I love jump cancelling.

Anyway, not much to say here.  I own Abysses.  I own Arkham.  I get owned by Arkham's legions.  But I mostly own the other two to such an extent that the slight ownage from the Legions (Three hits, those things are a BITCH without Kalina Ann) is far outweighed by the fun little performance through the rest of the stage.  I just go all out on the Jump Cancelling here just because hey, it's the final real stage, I might as well enjoy it, right?

What I CAN say, is that I'm currently at 1:37:57 for my final time.  Is sub 1:40 possible?  Considering I don't need to skip any cutscenes unlike with Dante, it's VERY possible.  Either which way, this safetly nudges me 20 minutes before the RG run I did and a good 35 faster than my Single Segment.  I'm pleased...
Ha!  Oh god.  It's done.  It's finally FRIGGIN' done.  Mission 20 - 1:02.  Woooo.  Time to contact Radix.
