Why? I NEVER USE my R2 button.

Because I've been using a control scheme similar to DMC1's Type B ever since I started playing a DMC game.  I'm VERY used to that, so the face buttons aren't changing, and because I need to be able to Devil Trigger, Target, Spiral Cancel and weapon switch for Dante, along with just plain weapon switching for Vergil.
KING OF THE DOVES
During my God of War run, my R2 button stopped working at the Cliffs of Maddness. You can't push blocks around without that button, so I opened up my controller (using a small screw driver) and just adjusted the R2 button's internals, then put it back togeather again. I needed several, several tries to the get the shoulder buttons to work (the rubber wouldn't fit right as I put the halves together), but eventually I got it.
If you're not worried about voiding any possible warranty, try it~

My friend did the same with his R1 button. It got broken because of so much Lock-On in action games. He succeeded at frist but the controller broke a few weeks after that.

Are you getting overall faster times with Vergil or about the same as your Dante run?

When I was playing around with my fresh Vergil file, yes, he's MUCH faster, and much less dependent on DTE all the same time.  It's especially obvious in missions 2, where he frequently comes in at just barely 1:39, mission 1 where he averaged about 6 or 7 seconds faster, and in mission 7 where it's very possible for Vergil to kill all the greeds in a given fight before a single enemy spawns (You can very much save a minute in that mission alone vs. Dante, who can't kill quite that fast and has to deal with monster spawns).

Also, the fact that Vergil gets his most powerful move early on, Starfall 2, is pretty damning on the Vergil fights.

Vergil's inadequate against Cerberus, sure.  He's not much better against Lady, due to the lack of a proper airhike making the second phase much harder than it has to be, and Vergil's fight with Arkham is much more rigid and drawn out thanks to the lack of Kalina Ann.  Missions 15/17 terrify me, due to the fact that... well... Dante is the superior platforming type of character and Vergil just sucks in comparison.

My times are all in all though, much better.

Yeah, I'm checking them out now, but I can see a ton of places to save time around here, and often enough my SS times completely destroy his.  He's got a lot of skill, that's obvious, but he slows himself down a lot doing fluff combos, getting completely unecessary orbs and orb caches when he already has more than enough to fulfill the orb quota, or he keeps killing excess monsters like in Chaos' Warm Welcome (Mission 13) or wasting his DTEs or something early (I can get a 4:20 SS easy using RG in mission 8, it's not necessary to use DTE in the special mission).  They're a good watch, but I wouldn't take any route from these videos since they're just like the website says, a video walkthru.

Of course, those comments were concerning Dante, and I considered the special missions when I was typing,

Edit Edit: I'm going to be capturing the 2:12:30 Single Segment for you guys to check out, though I don't think I'm gonna submit it.  Don't think it's a big enough improvement, especially since my times are constantly slightly higher than the 2:14:34 with a few major time savers that all in all, save 2 minutes out of a 135 minute movie.  Still, everything barring the poor luck on boss patterns, there's much cleaner and much better execution on my part.

I bought the special edition of this game after finishing my God of War run and I have to say it's a very fun game! As I was going through the game I was watching your 2:14:34, making sure not to go too far ahead so I wouldn't spoil anything for myself.

I'm wondering if you're going to continue your Vergil run? I sure would like to see it.

Wooo!  Vergil.  Man.  That guy frightens me.  You do not know fear until you try to take on Gigapede with Vergil.

Anyway, the run's met a lot of issues but I'm still "KINDA" working on it, meaning that essentially I'm stuck trying to re-learn how to effectively fight with Vergil and still working out some boss strategies.  The purchasing order's been pretty much established, but there's a problem.

It is gonna have to be segmented.

Vergil's lack of a proper double jump is just painful in so many platforming segments (Missions 12, 16, 17 off the top of my head), the boss strategies are much riskier than before, especially Agni and Rudra/Lady/Beowulf... well at least how I handle Beowulf to squeeze the most damage out of, and especially Arkham when I don't have a luxury like Kalina Ann to hide behind...  Not to mention that the orb requirements are so much tighter than the Dante run since there's a lot more moves that save more time than Dante, who just really needs air hike, Revolver Level 2 and Stingers.

Inbetween that, I've also been working on improving the current run (I hope to send in the 2:12:30 soon, it's as good as I'm gonna get without getting lucky), a DMC2 Lucia run AND a low% Dante DMC3 run which, since it's a low%, will have to be itemless.  Whether Single Segment or Segmented is still undecided for the last one but I will say... Fallen fights are gonna be painful.

I've been discussing it with Psychochild, and I may take up the daunting task of a 100% run of Vergil.

I'd like to do it with all SSes, but that will be a problem, since I can't see how it's possible to win all 8 fights on M18 and stay under time.  Turbo mode might make it possible, but Radix says no.

Also, completing SM9 is going to SUCK.

Barring Heaven or Hell, I doubt it's even possible with a master Royal Guard player with a maxed Dante on anything but the easiest difficulty... Well, it MIGHT be possible on like, S.E.'s easy, but the point stands, with Vergil it's going to be impossible even though he's a killing machine.  I still say that you should just go ahead, S every other category but time and get on with it since there's no way Capcom's gonna put in a 16 minute S rank time for a normal/hard mode mission 18 in the PC version of S.E..  It was never intended for someone to get both the blue orb and an SS on this stage in the first place.

Edit:  Figured I'd throw this in there.  It's funny reading the previous page about how I thought 1:38 was a big deal on mission 2.  Got a 1:06 Mission 1/1:32 Mission 2 SS/A rank respectively on tape.  Of course, my original route called for straight S ranks through the first 5 missions or so, so I gotta trim something down now...

But that's about all I'm doing tonight.  My right hand is KILLING me.  I'll post a video when I feel like it.

I was planning on doing it with the PC version (Hello, WinFRAPS), but I can't figure out when Ubisoft wants to release it.

Hmmm, a DMC3 run SS. Good Cheesy
M18 on DMD ... Never liked it. Especially, that some bosses change paterns (A&R). Time ... when I measure with more than 3 bosses I've never gotten better than B (on Hard ... I'm not even talking abot sick DMD :P).
So ... well ... it will be intresting to see just normal S mark on this Mission Cheesy

One question: any advice for semi-advance player for fast fight against few Living Statues (Dante)? Normally I load L1 to max (6 balls or so) - the radius damage from DT gets few of LS, but the rest is problem. Forward+circle with Rebellion on Swordmaster puts statue out of fight for some time ... but in rooms with many LS (like this damn Living Statue Room in M4 (or 5) ) I just can't fight well goon enought (on DMD). Shooting from safe position is to slow (but safe) ... so ... are there any strategis? Please, help poor Scorpy Tongue Tongue

Psycho - very nice canceling in mission 2 Cheesy
:wq
Actually, I'm planning on doing it on Normal, not DMD.  I hate DMC3's DMD.  DMC1's DMD was fun and challenging.  DMC3's DMD is boring and tedious.

Y'know, with Dante on DMD I only completed it once, JUST SO I can claim to have beaten it, and my general strategy with Enigmas would just be spiral cancelling from a safe distance and then when all's said and done, DTEing for the kill.  It's painfully inefficient, especially when they're spread out, but you know what?  DMD is just ridiculous and I don't feel any worse doing it that way...

OKi. I just though that it will be SS on DMD so ... You know ... I just thought about myself as a little (extremly little) noob Cheesy
I did a run without any item on DMD!, ... but the best I could get was an A-mark ... and not to often. Plus a level in 3-6 days. And all the Enigmas with red arrows ... for me it is more luck than skills to kill them without being touched. Spiral, and Sword Throw from safe position ... but it is slow ... Tongue

Psycho - swaping weapons for combos in the 1 & 2 mission are just perfect. I do not have the SE yet, so I do not know if trick works with Vergil. I mean pressing select while there is no enemies to keep style rating from falling down.

And so I wanted to see impossible. S Mark on mission 18. DMD! style  Grin

Quickly getting annoyed.  I've been going up against Cerberus all day, and so far, my best is a very nice 3:23.  I did score a 3:19, but according to the save screen, I saved all of ONE second!  Woo!

But what bugs me, is that I'm afraid I'm scrapping too low on the orb count AND the Cerberus fight just bugs the hell out of me.  It's true, Dante has it SO MUCH EASIER on the boss fight since he can actually freeze Cerberus, but not so much Vergil.  Vergil here with such slow firing swords is pretty much at a severe disadvantage, so he's reliant on the Yamato to clear the ice from the heads and only after that, bring out the summoned swords to deal damage and hopefully stun Cerberus.  Even THEN, this requires me to constantly be hopping in front of Cerberus' face, and without Ebony and Ivory, Cerberus' floor freezing attack is MUCH more obnoxious.  Cerberus' attack where he lunges and bites the player is a massive risk, and the headbutt... my timing seems off on dodging it for SOME reason.  This boss fight is just ugly.

But it's even MORE heart-wrenching that the fight preceeding Cerberus is...in short, totally bitchin'.  That's right.  Bitchin'.  I'm pretty stuck at Sshowtime or Ssstylish for the majority of the fight and there's no major or MINOR mistakes outside of maybe a missed star fall or two.

The best part of it HAS to be the two hell prides I killed with a single Star Fall.

I'll post the 3:23 video when I get home tonight and continue working on this segment further...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

2:51 Mission 3 SS!

That's right.  I've managed to take an entire minute from an "Ideal" Dante time and.. like everything ELSE so far in this damn run, there's a much easier, much more consistent way to handle a pissed off Cerberus which is INSANELY easy to do.  Go figure.

The secret?  **** Spiral Swords.  For so long I thought Summoned Swords would be the answer to shatter Cerberus' ice shield quickly, but as I soon found out... that was pretty damn slow regardless.  So what did yours truly do?  The obvious - I got level 3 Summoned Swords before the Cerberus fight.

I admit, the barfight isn't the best, that honor belongs to the incredible 3:23 I recorded, but the Cerberus battle is something else in just how fast you can take the son of a bitch out.

And yeah, I DID have a no damage... but this WAS the fastest by a good 9 seconds, sooooo... WOO!

http://rapidshare.de/files/19993508/Vergil_3.avi.html

I'm up to 8 minutes at the save screen after mission 3 which puts me two minutes and eight seconds faster than the Royal Guard Dante run so far, but that's considered improved loading time, the fact I don't stop to get the blue orb fragments and Vergil's default ass kicking prowness.

Now things get interesting.  I don't THINK Spiral Swords are really much use in the first place and since I've already gone ahead and maxed out my Summoned Swords as far as they'll go... well, what the hell am I gonna buy to fill the void in my left from skipping out Spiral Swords?  I'm probably gonna try to get Devil Orbs by level 5 or so... Hmm.

Mission 4- SS 4:10

There's a few REALLY good things about this segment.  First off, it's a 4:10!  Woo!  When I was doing practice runs for this level, I figured that a 4:15 would be the ideal time, but huh.  Goes to show what I know.

Gigapede goes VERY smoothly allowing me to slaughter it in the middle of the third pass.  It was also the first attempt I made recording (Though I did waste 40 minutes playing with the level before I started).  It's just impressive all in all, and the boss ends depositing me right next to the door leading to the end goal of the stage.

But... I manage to also get hit SEVERAL times throughout the mission.  I think I manage to get whacked once in every fight and the targetting system was being a major bitch in the Chamber of Sin.  I had this awesome combo lined up at one point to slaughter a Hell Lust, jump off it, rebound off the wall and Star Fall a Sloth but NOOOOOOOOOOOO.  The game decided to target SOMETHING on the otherside of the room.  This also happens when I try to teleport away from an exploding Wrath, but... well, I got maimed.  I wasn't pleased.  The same thing happened to a limited extent in the Living Statue room... but eh.  At least the Chamber of Sin fight was fast enough.

I'm willing to overlook the problems here just because of the stellar boss fight (And the fact I completely abhor this boss without a proper double jump and the INSANE randomness OF this fight MAY have something to do with this decision...), but it's gonna be a segment that bugs the hell out of me a month down the road, I know it.

I also realised I was forgetting to compress the audio for missions 1-3.  My apologies guys.  I did fix the audio though for this video, so it comes out to about 22 mb in total.

What it is, is that my VCR only has inputs and outputs for one channel sound and for video.  This is a total pain in the ass in the RG segmented run I did since I realised only AFTER I completed my run that I played in Stereo sound, which explains just how come enemies that attacked from the extreme right NEVER made a sound.

And I haven't bothered going out to find a hardware solution to fix the problem.  So I've just been recording it with one channel of sound since I won't be capturing the finished run in the first place and posting those so that way I can get feedback on my run as it progresses from friends and other DMC3 players, instead of having to keep my progress in the dark with no feedback whatsoever, which is how the abysmal 2:29 SS made it onto the site.

So, back on topic, here's my plan for mission 5 and 6.  Four purple orbs in mission 5 which will probably be joined by a fifth DT rune in due time, but for now it's all I could afford up to this point.  Or... maybe not.

I still need to have 30,000 orbs available by mission 9 which is VERY possible provided I get nothing but S ranks and over in missions 5, 8 and 9 while hitting up all the secret orb caches along the way.

Just rambling for my own benefit here.

15,000 by the end of mission 5, an extra 5,000 from mission 6 with the orb cache and the A rank bonus, 10,000 from mission 7 S rank and the red orb formation AND the orb cache hidden on the stage, along with an easy 8,000 from mission 8 S rank and Red orb formation, plus an orb cache in mission 9 before the statue along with the orbs from fighting these enemies in the first place, not to mention boss bonuses on missions 7 and 8...

That'll pretty much be the last big purchase here, inbetween Starfall at mission 6 and the 2 judgement cut upgrades.  From there, it will all then go towards the entire Holy Water deal like in the previous run.

I'm working on missions 5 and 6 right now in the same segment since there's really nothing to mission 6 in the first place.  Mission 5, I'm shooting for a sub 5:55 time (Which may not seem like an improvement over Dante's 6:00 flat RG run until you realize that my Dante didn't have to put up with Jester).  The hardest part is just not killing Agni and Rudra too fast since with Vergil armed with level 3 phantom swords CAN take a brother out with ease DT'ed or not within' a single disarmed stun phase with each brother.

Mission 5- 5:07

First off, I have some problems with this stage.  Namely I managed to get hit several times in the Jester fight, I managed to get stuck and effectively jump cancel a ledge in the Living Statue room for a second, and a few enemies are uncooperative.  But at the same time... The Jester fight is fast thanks to the fact he chooses to go with that attack pattern, rather than one of his more drawn out orb assaults since he obviously won’t be shielded anywhere near as long otherwise.  The damage I take doesn’t really cost me any time here anyway, outside of maybe a second as well.

I hate the camera angle in the Living Statue room.  I hate how I can never seen to trick to Enigmas even though they’re directly in Vergil’s line of sight and I KNOW I’m doing the trick right, and I hate the infernal layout and monsters they throw in there, especially the zippy jumpy kind we see here...

A note for Sternn, you can get a VERY easy SSStylish rank on the elevator ascent by simply standing to the right with the Yamato and going to town with the basic three hit strike.  I found this out the attempt AFTER the run I posted here so it’s not in here.  But easy, easy Ssstylish none the less since it gets all of the prides in the three hit combo once they turn and approach you.

Back to the run, Agni and Rudra were just excellent through and through, barring one whack that... well, surprised the hell out of me.  You have to be DT’ed to tackle Agni (The Red Feller) and expect to take off as much health as I did, but Rudra, not so much.  I really was on thin ice though with Agni near the end, he was so ready to blow this for me hopping directly behind Vergil spamming Summoned Swords like I was...

And speaking of which, there’s absolutely no reason that I should have been sent soaring like I did, especially when I was devil triggered AND managed to parry his blow like I did at the SAME TIME, but whatever.

It’s kind of amazing though just how much better Vergil has it, even up to this point.  I’m pushing about 51 seconds ahead of Dante’s RG run on Dante’s Awakening, and that doesn’t even DEAL with Jester.

I’m sure the four DT orbs I get at the start have something to do with that though... >.>

Mission 6- 1:20

Not my best, not my worst, I had one poor Starfall right into a wall and I couldn’t stop teleporting at the base of the Artemis statue when I was trying to put the Essences into the infernal thing.  And folks, this is the FIRST TIME Vergil manages to follow behind Dante’s record, thanks to the lack of a proper Stinger cancel in this campaign.  I do get Starfall Level 2 though which is VERY nice for some limited travel as seen in this stage.

23:21 is my current time of the game which... I have no idea where it puts me in comparison to my other runs...

Gonna be a while before a Mission 7 shows up.  I need to learn the timing for just how to jump cancel a level 2 Starfall while Devil Triggered... needless to say... it's gonna be FUUUUUN......

(Grumbles)
