So my single segment run was rejected because it's "too soon" for a portal run… 23 minutes (including loading), single segment on the Xbox 360. Sad
I used to be athiest until I realized I was God.
Maybe it is too soon. Single segment attempts I've been doing have put me around 21 minutes, but I'm going to wait till demo recording is fixed (fraps' bad fps hurts many tricks).
demo_interpolateview 1

Helps a little.  Console says it's default but it's not.  I've also been using the smoother, just select all the ticks then "smooth selection origin" then go back and "smooth selection angles" then save it.  They're still choppy, tho.  But at least you can tell generally where portals went, and you get caddy-whompused less often.  Probably a few other interp commands can help, haven't really looked too hard.

Also wanted to say I hope everyone is keeping their bloopers, cuz man I have some good ones.  Using a bind to record so I just rename the bind if I get a good one.  Just earlier on escape_02 was trying to put a portal in place then back into the other one but the new one didn't stick, and the old one was right above the incinerator...lol.

I wanna see the run on this game... I would verify it in a second

bloopers

i had one in level 18 where used the 'jam the door open with a box' shortcut, and as I approached it, the door launched it into me and killed me.

bet glados didn't expect that one

i've still yet to kill myself in the first 60 seconds in that chamber, but I've come close.
woot
A "bunny hop" method was found on the HL2DQ forum, I was told it works in Portal but I haven't tried it myself.

Basically all you do is hold forward and jump, do a 180 and hold crouch.  While holding crouch, use AHK jump script, or bind +jump to your mousewheel, and just keep jumping.  Each jump gets faster and faster.

You need kinda a lot of room to get a good speed so I don't know where it could be used, but it's just a heads up.  Maybe some long portal-less hallway or something.  I don't remember seeing too many.
About the verification process at this game, how is it possible to see if demos were made using the timescale cheat? I guess the demo format is not open so you can extract data from it about set parameters.

by boosting, do you mean wallclimbing? i posted that last page

My way is you jump out of the portal in the highest position on the wall then immediately start boosting up using the chair.  Not falling all the way to the floor on the cube and then boosting up.

Ok, so chamber 19 should look like this after tweaking the route a little bit. And here's a better way to get pass the big turret room in the last level without any cubes or chairs, it's 9 seconds faster than my last video. Could someone test which method is faster, mine or using a chair (+the time needed to get the chair and drop/pick it back up every time you have to shoot a portal)?

edit: Oh, and after a little bit of researching and fixing the routes for the last few maps I can tell that a high 18:xx should be more than possible.

Loading on the 360 totals about 2 minutes… so I'd say it's pretty even.
5 + 4 = 9
Well on PC loading times are all different due to different specs so unfortunately timing would be a little harder in this game. Also do you guys rekkon 360 should be in it's own section?

Yeah, that's how I usually do it, but I just can't get that to work while FRAPS is running. Hopefully demo recording will be fixed soon.

That's intense, but like you said, I'm not sure where it can be used. Opening hallways of chamber 17 maybe? Few scenarios in the escape..

damn you, short game!

Mine was including loading as well.

Like I said when I suggested that idea, it's pretty much a wash.  Still get to the door in about 26 seconds.  The time you gain by not crossing catwalk is lost on the drop back down to a portal.  I get to the catwalk in 20 seconds, and it's about 5-6 seconds to get across, depending on how clean it is.

I've got escape_02 down to 2:52 now to where the red orb explodes.  Most I think I could get with cleaner execution is about 5 seconds.

Gonna study Glados tonite and see if there's a pattern.

I've got an even faster way for the big turret room: Get to the ground asap like groobo did in his latest vid.  Then instead of setting up to shoot a portal on the high door that opens.  Just fall out the high point on the wall and shoot the portal on the lower door that opens, then fall through a portal on the ground.  You launch out of the portal on the lower door, turn a 180 and you can get a portal up on the high floor where you normally do, the angle is small.  Then you'll land on the floor.  Shoot a portal below you right after landing go through it with some forward speed.  Then you come out on that top floor and fall off and proceed like normal.

The chair boost and groobo's latest vid where about the same, but this new method should be the fastest.

I just figured out how I was able to get that super speed while bhopping backwards.  You really do have to be going backwards for it to work.  Just run backwards and jump then do a bhopping curve and you should start to pick up some serious speed in the first jump, by the third jump you'll be at max speed if done right and this is faster than noclip speed.  You need to be turning the mouse at the right speed.

I found a way that makes it easier for narrow passages.  Hold duck.  Now the right speed for turning the mouse is much slower and the amount you will curve is much less.

I've been able to fly down that top catwalk and down those hallways in chamber 17.
k, well I was finally able to land a portal by catwalk door using my method and it's about 23 seconds.  I figure if you have to wait for one of the angle roofs to open might as well wait on the top for the better boost.  In reality it doesn't really matter because whether you portal around until it's ready or just wait like I do it's still the same.  But groobo does extra jumping that I don't have to do.

Doing it from the lower door is faster since you don't go as high and you land on the ground, not on the lower door.  This lets you come out of the high floor portal faster and also you don't launch high up out of it, saving more time.

I got a faster way now.  You don't even have to wait on the doors.

Only other thing I'm wanting to try is to nail a portal next to the catwalk door.  You'd have to boost out away from that upper platform a pretty good ways to get the angle, and I'm not sure it's possible since you pretty much get boosted straight up, and not out.  Would just save b-hops across catwalk is all, tho, plus the extra time spent falling back down may cancel it out, but would be cool.

test jumps

I still have to wait for door to open, too, so maybe the chair thing will be faster.  Just not near as cool, heh.  ;-)

I don't hit the lower door, once I get the first portal in place it's portal to portal, no stopping or slowing down.  Instead of using the portal to boost to catwalk (2nd jump in vid) I just stick a portal by the door like I was talking about, and like groobo shows in his vid.

But I guess I'll wait to see your faster method before I bother with a vid.  I've got 23 to the door, but I think it could be 21 or 22.
I used to be athiest until I realized I was God.
I just formatted so Fraps isn't up, but theres a faster way you dont' have to wait on the doors - might be the same one SW is talking about.

Setup a portal at the top of the middle of the wall (so no doors are in the way of a full-room longjump), and one in front of you. Walk into it, and shoot the landing for a normal fling. Hold forward, and you should fling into the opposite wall. Lay a portal on that wall right where you're about to hit, and then you should be continuing that one big longjump. Lay a portal where you about to land, and you should arc up high enough to tag that little platform, and then before you land lay an opposite portal as teh tag, and land on the catwalk.

That explanation is horrible, so here's a demo.

http://files.filefront.com/dodem/;8855930;/fileinfo.html

Of course, it's assumed in a speedrun, you wouldn't screw up a bunnyhop on the catwalk, and get lost trying to find the door, then wander around aimlessly.
I'll check it.  May not help but I noticed you can also put a portal on the doors while they're closed, but it disappears as soon as the doors open.  Not much different than putting one right next to it tho.

anyway, I found a little mapjunk outside the companion cube map.  Maby a scrapped idea.

It's no help in speedrunning but fun non the less.
