Im pretty sure that is well known cacodemon. It's absolutely neccesary to use that to get a decent time in level 14, and it's just doing the same thing in 19.
Not having played the game yet, that seems like some serious mastery of portals.
That's pretty nifty. I had another way but I never realised that you could gain enough velocity on that hall way, so I tried it with a complex double fling. D:
I just ran a singlesegment attempt, I died of all places, in level 18, after launching across the robot gap and grabbing the cube, i died while dropping to the next floor.
My time up to then was 15m40s, from pressing 'new game' to death, including loading screens. Level 19 and the escape shouldn't take too long, but I have not timed the boss fight, so Im not sure how long that takes. Probably 3 minutes or so for all the waiting? Oh well.
Im still throwing attempts at it every now and then.
Gah, anyone have any tips for capturing? Demo recording is still broken, there's certain tricks I just can't do when FRAPS kills my framerate unless I turn down the video settings (which hurts viewing), and I don't have a dvd recorder or external thing to hookup to capture.
I did a quick run just to estimate what time guys speedrunning this game should aim for. So anyway a 19:xx should be easy. My time was 20:12 and the only trick I didn't use is the door block in chamber 18 (this alone should save at least ten seconds). The levels aren't in any way optimized, here are the demos.

I have the xbox 360 version and can't view the demos. Is 20:12 the time in realtime from start to finish? Including or excluding loading? Just the times for the chambers added up?

It's the time from gaining control till dealing the last hit on the boss, loading times excluded.
they were saying same when HL2:EP1 was released...
Slightly different. HL2:EP1 was a bug that occured due to code they assumed wouldn't do anything (iirc) so it took a little while longer to smooth out and fix. To quote Yahn on the Portal glitch:
Quote:
The Portal team made some changes to demos related to playback when going through portals and those changes are contributing to the non-smooth playback you see. We've discussed a better solution and they are revisiting those changes and working on a fix. Should hopefully go out in an update in the next few weeks.
Here are chamber 19 and the three escape levels for those who don't have the game or have the 360 version of the game. Again, I only wanted to show some tactics for those levels.
edit: at about 0:30 in the first video, you can shoot a portal on the up-right end of the wall, and just jump through the portal behind you to land at the correct end of the catwalk. Probably save 4-5 seconds

Cool runs, or at least the last 2 maps I checked which is the ones I've been playing with. I get to the same spot on the catwalk on escape_02 about 5 seconds faster than you, but I think combining our methods will cut another 5 seconds off.
I also tried getting that first sphere to drop straight in but gravity kept boosting it out the portal past the incinerator.
I've got escape_02 down to 2:58 to where the last sphere explodes, but that's with a couple of mis-steps. I'mma go see if I can land something and I'll post a video if it works.
Groobo's method for this last room has two things slowing it down. The wait for the door to open so you can put a portal on it, and then running all the way across the catwalk.
What I do is take the chair used for the vent boost through those 4 portals to get it into the water trench, then put the next portal just where groobo does, jump out and immediately start boosting off that pillar thing that sticks out of the wall to the right.
Doing this I can go from the portal to the catwalk door in 15 seconds. Groobo's way took about 26 seconds. Then you waste a couple second from taking the chair through 5 portals. So it saves about 9 seconds.
Well it's uploading now, I'll edit when it's processed.
From the beginning of the map to where groobo hit the catwalk I counted around 29 seconds. I just did that in about 20, and my first method was around 25. The video will have both methods.
Only other thing I'm wanting to try is to nail a portal next to the catwalk door. You'd have to boost out away from that upper platform a pretty good ways to get the angle, and I'm not sure it's possible since you pretty much get boosted straight up, and not out. Would just save b-hops across catwalk is all, tho, plus the extra time spent falling back down may cancel it out, but would be cool.
I still have to wait for door to open, too, so maybe the chair thing will be faster. Just not near as cool, heh. ;-)
Also after you pass catwalk and get in the halls, use portals to get down the hall. The "step out, shoot a portal, and step back through" method. Same for the long hall before Glados room. shaves a few seconds off instead of bh'ing down the hall (I think, anyway).
