So let me get this straight: You used the 2 candies instead of fighting one extra trainer battle before Misty?

2 Rare Candies before Lavender Rival?  Why?

The rest I don't agree with either, but they make a lot more sense than the first half or whatever.  I do commend your time though!

BTW, my SS is devoid of PokeCenter visits...how many did you use?

I just started a game for purpose of testing the Lucky Egg segmented idea.  I'll keep you posted.  Either that, or steal your glory Wink  We'll see =P

2 Rare Candies = 2 or 3 extra trainers.

Yeah the Lavender rival was kinda a random place to use them. I was at lv 34 with almost no EXP points so I thought going into the rival battle with a Blastoise would be good.

The PokeCenters I used:
Twice at Cerulean
At Vermillion (was a stupid mistake, I got paralyzed during Surge fight).
At Lavender after I got Fly
After I got the badge from Celadon
Before the Elite 4

Next run I'll use Ethers and PP Ups to cut down on PokeCenters.

Good Luck with the Lucky Egg strategy. I'm guessing it will save a few minutes.

Please forgive me if I am wrong somehow, but the only "unnecessary" trainer fight I engage in prior to Misty is, I believe, against the bug catcher in Mt Moon near the rare candy, and it's worth a level up at this point in the game, and makes enough difference to obtain BIte upon beating Staryu.

Fair enough on the Blastoise idea.

My heal points are as follows:

SS Anne bed (upon entering, and again upon leaving)
Lavender Tower Heal Square
Your House
Silph Co Bed
Your House

Max Elixer right before E4
Max Elixer right before Final Rival

PP ups on Blizzard (to compensate for lesser accuracy)
Rotate the water moves to keep enough PP in the intermediate places, an elixer/ether if necessary (there are enough around)

2 Leppa Berries

That's all I have for now!

Yeah, you're right. I'm pretty sure the two rare candies got me bite before Misty instead of after Staryu. I should have just used one of them before Misty.

My suspicions are that the lucky egg will completely nullify the need to pick up candies at all.  However, if you're using the 2-4 candies prior to the safari zone, then go for it...My end goal is to have 11 candies, plus the extra levels from boosted exp.  I suspect the egg will provide 10 levels extra on top of the candies.  If nothing else, this strategy will be applied to the E4R2 segmented strat, but we'll see.

Also, was your blastoise male or female?  And what nature?  Did you do the celedon shopping this time?  How many mart stops did you make?
Ö_ö
My Blastoise was female + Bold (again)

I just reset until I got a decent nature. It was on my second attempt that I got Bold.

What do you think the best nature is?

Also I'm pretty sure gender doesn't matter at all, right? I don't remember anything having attract.

Yes, I did the Celadon shopping. My other shopping stops were:
Pewter City - 4 Escape Ropes and 6 Repels
Vermillion - 15 Repels and 12 Super Potions (sold Nugget here, only used a few Super Potions)
Elite 4 - Used all my left over money on Full Restores (I got 9)
The 21 Repels barely lasted the whole game.

I'm thinking of changing this to:
Pewter City - Use all my money on Repels
Lavender Town - 4 Escape Ropes, Lots of Super Repels, Some Super Potions. Don't sell Nugget this time.
Elite 4 - All money on Full Restores again.

Using Super Repels over Repels would save a tiny amount of time.

Here's mine:
Pewter:  Sell TM from Brock, buy 11 repels (will take care of Mt moon and rock tunnel), get 2 awakening, 2 paralyz heal, rest potion

Lavender: Buy 15 super repel, Revives (I guess you don't need this in a segmented =/), Super Potions

If you find the hidden items/pick up the ones en route, you can skip the final shopping as well.  You can get 2 max revives and 3-4 full restores, as well as some hyper potions on the way.  Just a thought though.  I can see the point of shopping instead I suppose, but the 2 max revives might be nice (I know they are for me!)

Since you're clearly online, you should get on AIM for a few minutes!
Back in the game!
Sorry for the double post, but gender matters a LOT for the SS run:  Loreli's Jynx has attract.  I've lost a couple of good runs this way.  The alternatative to a female is having earthquake with X-attack for a OHKO in this battle.

So far, I'm at 27 minutes just outside of cerulean gym, with my rare candies still in pocket.  We'll see which is better...
Back in the game!
I'm in the safari zone now, searching for the lucky egg...so far no luck with it.  I'm honestly hoping that my findings turn out that it's not at all worth it, because if it's a major time saver, whomever decides to do this run segmented is effectively fucked.

By the way, Cole, up until this point, I am 2 minutes slower than you, without having used any rare candies, and also picking up the Brick Break TM and the X attack on the SS Anne, as well as making the detour to the kitchen for the berries (force of habit from my SS run).  Wish me luck with the remainder of the test! I love SDA!
I just found this website today O.o

Been playing an insane amount of Pokemon in the last few weeks (went through FR, Emerald, Gold with my only previous experience being Yellow)... decided to see what all the buzz about speed runs was about.

Congrats to everyone so far (esp. to Cole on his amazing time, and Darius for his smart strategies)...

Also - I was looking for that one Sitrus Berry that you use for Surge, and it turns out there's a Rare Candy directly on the other side of the house from the spot where the Berry is. It should be pretty obvious if you know where the berry is.

Looking forward to any updates...

Hey! If anyone plans on doing a run with the second quest (when you need 60 pokemon), I made a list of what pokemon to catch, based on the order of places you visit. This is for time efficiency (or something like that). Also, I think this run would be better on Leaf Green because you can catch Magmar in Cinnabar Mansion and save the time of having to evolve more pokemon. If you have Fire Red, you would have to get Eevee in Celadon.

Catching Order - List updated 5/19 10am PST
::edits::
- Catch Meowth at Route 8 so you don't have to jump over the rocks into the grass on Route 5.
- Weezing isn't in Cinnabar Mansion in LG!! Sorry!!
- Evolve both Metapod and Kakuna

-Pallete Town-
1. Squirtle

-Route 1-
2. Pidgey
3. Ratata

-Viridian Forest-
4. Pikachu (catch him first because you won't have to waste time going to a pokemon center to withdraw him and evolve him.)
5. Metapod
6. Kakuna
7. Weedle
8. Caterpie

You want your 5th and 6th pokemon to be Metapod and Kakuna. That way, you don't waste time going to a PC, withdraw a pokemon, and evolve them. Just evolve Metapod/Kakuna when you can.

-Route 3-
9. Spearow
10. Mankey
11. Jigglypuff
12. Buy Magikarp for $500

-Mt. Moon-
13. Zubat
14. Geodude
15. Paras
16. Clefairy

-Route 4-
17. Sandshrew

-Route 24-
18. Bellsprout
19. Abra

-Vermillion City-
20. Drowzee (go out a bit to route 11 and catch one).

-Route 9-
21. Voltorb

-Rock Tunnel-
22. Machop
23. Onix

-Route 8-
24. Vulpix
25. Meowth

-Celedon City-
26. Raichu (evolve pikachu w/thunderstone)
27. Butterfree (from Metapod)
28. Beedril (from Kakuna)

Evolve Metapod/Kakuna when you fight trainers to get to Erika

-Pokemon Tower-
29. Gastly
30. Haunter
31. Cubone

-Silph Co.-
32. Lapras

-Cycling Road-
33. Snorlax
34. Fearow
35. Doduo

-Safari Zone-
36. Parasect
37. Rhyhorn
38. Exeggcute
39. Nidoran M
40. Nidorino
41. Nidoran F
42. Nidorina
43. Chansey
44. Kangaskhan
45. Venonat
46. Venomoth
47. Tauros

-Route 21-
48. Tentacool
49. Tentacruel

-Cinnabar Mansion-
50. Magmar
51. Koffing
52. Grimer
53. Muk
54. Raticate
55. Ditto

-Victory Road-
56. Marowak
57. Machoke
58. Primeape

-Last 2 pokemon-
59. Wartortle (from Squirtle)
60. Blastoise (From Wartortle)
-------------
There, 60 pokemon before reaching the Elite Four for the first time.

This was written at the TAS boards where tool-assists are allowed... so be prepared for lots of resetting. Tongue

EDIT: Also, If Blastoise is already level 63, you probably don't need Mewtwo. Just beware Lorilei's Lapras has T-Bolt the second tiem you face the E4.

Just looking at this list real quick, why not evolve Eevee with a stone rather than catch something else?
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
The Safari zone would require a heck lot of resets o.o

By the time you get Eevee, you already have 6 pokemon in your team. So, you would have to go to a Pokemon Center and withdraw Eevee. If you don't evolve Eevee, you can skip going to a pokemon center and save more time.

:EDIT:
The list has been updated! You don't need room for Lapras, my mistake. Plus, it's not out of the way like Eevee is, so it's better to get.

If you'll look earlier in the topic, I made the optimum list for a SS run of this sort, although it is not broken down quite as well as you have.

What time are you shooting for?
Too cool for 7th grade.
um... I dunno. I don't really have time to spend on a speedrun like this. I guess the time would be like:

2:20 - record right now
0:10 - extra time to catch pokemon
0:40 - to do the extra side quest and E4 round 2.
---------------------------------------
Total: 3:10

that sound good?

Your ten minutes is slightly out of place.  I can't say anything about the 40 minutes, because I'd have to test that part myself.

Reasoning on the ten minutes not being enough time: A pokemon evolving takes 15-20 seconds apiece (I don't have this exactly timed, but I'll guarantee it's in that range).  Wild encounter animation, the catch (assuming that it's just balled without fighting it), dex entry data, and the option to nickname is around 30 seconds each.  You're going to catch everything that you possibly can, save for stone evolutions and buying magikarp.  For sake of simplicity, let's say that there are 50 catches, 3 freebies, and the remaining seven are stones.  Half of 50 is 25 minutes for catching alone.  So, nearly half an hour, is what I'd wager on catching pokes.
Too cool for 7th grade.
It was on an emulator, but I had 18 Pokemon and got to Cerulean at 0:35 and didn't use any repels, so I said 10. I see where you're coming from, though.

So the time to aim for would be sub 3:30?

I made the list based on a tool-assisted run, so the Pokemon could be arranged so that you can get a Pokemon easier and don't have to reset as much.

Why not Hypno?  He's a mandatory fight, Island 3 sidequest when you find Lostelle.  Also, Moon Stone evolution of Nidorino and Nidorina would be faster than catching two extra pokes.  Also, evolve Jiggs and Clefairy, while I'm thinking about it.  You can make your all of your stone evoloutions all one fluid motion, one PC stop: Eevee, Pika, Clefairy, Jiggs, Nidorino, and Nidorina (best to make eevee a jolteon, so you don't have to buy/select two different items).

Buy Magikarp, like you said.  Drop him off at the daycare, and pick him up right before the Giovanni fight.  Don't catch Kakuna or Metapod, instead, exp share evolve them in the fighting dojo.  There are 5 trainers here, and you can do as follows:  Weedle to Kakuna for one fight, Kakuna to Beedrill the next.  Caterpie to Metapod the next, Metapod to Butterfree the one after that.  On the dojo master, you can evolve the Magikarp into Gyarados.  And then you get a free Hitmon.  Your Blastoise at this point should be powerful enough to OHKO all of your opponents pokemon, which ends up being nearly as fast as balling them (and if you consider your funds in the very beginning, this actually allows you to skip a mart stop, thus being equal if not faster than the other way)  6 dex entries within 3 minutes.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to acknowledge that I read your post.  I, of course, do have the Rare Candy already accounted for, but please don't let that stop you from letting us know your findings!

Also, I wanted to mention the worth of in-game trades.  I'd have to go check the others, but one noteworthy trade is spearow for "Ch'ding," the Farfetch'd.  Farfetch'd will not only serve as an extra dex entry, but also can learn both cut and fly, saving valuable time in the menu.  The actual trades take no longer than your typical catch.  I'll make a revised list to the segmented run in detail later.  Please keep the input coming guys!

Because it will save more time to skip the pokemon centers and dojo just like a regular pokemon run I would think. Leaving Magikarp at a day care center sounds good, but then you'd have to include the time going back to a city, going to the center, PAYING MONEY, etc. Same with trading for Farfetch'd: you have to go to a pokemon center, withdraw spearow, go to the house, trade spearow, then put Farfetch'd back in the PC...

I made the list so not only would you just run the 2:20 route to get the lowest time, but also taking into consideration the money you need to buy pokeballs effeciently.

Also, you want to get the first 60 Pokemon before the first E4 battle because you can get the National Dex before traveling to the islands. If you don't, then you would have to go back and forward between Pallete Town and the islands and that'll just waste more time.

Spearow solution:  Skip Pikachu until the grass outside of the power plant, right before rock tunnel.  Now Spearow is in your party instead.

National Dex:  After you beat the E4 the first time, when you continue your game, you're already in Pallet Town, and Oak comes to talk to you, no matter what.  If you do the island 1-3 stuff with Lostelle, and then beat the E4, you get one extra level early, plus you don't have to do that stuff first, and then backtrack for the ruby and sapphire.

The fighting dojo, you get another extra level on your Blastoise, plus 6 entries in your dex in nearly the same amount of time it takes to catch wilds.

In the defense of the Magikarp daycare idea,  it does take about 30 seconds total to pick up and pay for it.  But the idea is that you fly to Cerulean, and since you caught them first, caterpie and metapod should already be in your party.  Your party at this point in time should be Blastoise, caterpie, metapod, pidgey, ratatta, and farfetch'd, by my strat.  You can use the daycare as your necessary pokecenter stop to pull Lapras out (or any other strength capable pokemon of your choice...I'd actually recommend Geodude, because he's also able to learn rock smash).  This strategy is further useful for Island 4, where you have to use Waterfall, as Gyarados can learn it.  So, in all actuality, you're saving yourself some trouble, if anything.

Alternately, you could drop abra off for an evolution, however, you can also encounter wild kadabra, so this may not be the best idea.

Side Note:  with the addition of the running shoes, the abra teleport from Bills house and then from vermillion now saves about 3-5 seconds, instead of nearly 2 minutes.

Stone evolutions:  the 6 I mentioned earlier, plus some I forgot about:

Gloom -> Vileplume in Fire Red or
Weepingbell -> Victrebel in Leaf Green

Vulpix-> Ninetails in...I forget which one
Growlithe-> Arcanine in the other one.

Total of 8 possible stone evolution dex entries, without fishing.  Let me know if I missed something.

again, the idea is to skip the pokemon centers and skip going inside houses to trade so you can save time, that's why I don't think the Spearow idea is good. Pikachu can learn Strength and rock smash, and you get him early on, so you don't have to worry about going back to your PC for someone like that.

you have the right idea about Metapod/Kakuna, but it'd be faster to level them up at Giovanni's Gym because they're at such a low level, instead of going inside the dojo and fight five people, adding more time.

As for when you need someone to surf/waterfall, you can withdraw Lapras at the E4 when you get there the first time. That should be faster than having to fly back to Cerulean and pick up a Magikarp and evolving it.

BUT, you have a good idea for the Island part! It would be faster to just go with Bill because you wouldn't have to fly back to Cinnabar Island after the Elite 4. So yah, you could catch Pokemon that are easier to snag while you go search for Lostelle.

As for stones, You need the money for pokeballs and items, so I don't wanna buy them. Plus, you have to go up three floors to buy stones, it'll just add more time.
Back in the game!
Can you honestly say that stone evolution and the 5 seconds extra it takes to ride the elevator to the 3rd floor is slower than repelling thru an entire area though?
