Nice boss fight.

If it's possible, I would see about turning up the brightness on the recorder/game/tv. It's a little hard to see what's going on in some sections.
yea i'm trying to figure out how to set brightness on this thing... the game has very dark spots and idk what i can do about it. as far as i know, there isnt any in game brightness and i am not sure how to do that to my DVD recorder... any advice from anyone?

i can't give you any tech advice but i will say good job on the vids.  A Parasite Eve speed run would be really great!  It must be hard learning the enemy patterns and stuff because i remember eating damage constantly in this game.  it's a good thing that heal spell replenishes over time.  Grin

Parasite Eve, by nature, is a very dark game.  Like a lot of games, the best way to fix it is to actually just turn the brightness up on your monitor.

I know that DVD2AVI has a luminance adjuster, and the program anri-chan uses is similar to that, but I don't know how to make that type of adjustment w/o having to run the thing manually.
Okay so i know i haven't updated in a while but here is a quick little summary of whats been going on in my running of this evil game.... I have fixed the brightness on segment 1 so you can ACTUALLY SEE. I'm not going through the hassle of splitting it to 3 pieces and putting it on youtube, but just trust that it looks great when you do side by side comparisons ^_^.

Unfortunately this whole time i have been attempting to improve day 1, even do it without saving but to no avail. I cannot make it no matter how hard i try. Even when i do, i end up having the worst battle luck and have to heal so many times that my current segment 1 is really the best i think i'm going to see, even though saving did waste like 5 seconds.

Day 2 has been giving me a TON of trouble as i believe Lord VG said it would so I decided to split it into (a minimum of) 2 segments, the first 12 minutes of level is just text scrolling and running around before the central park zone where you are actually playing. I just figure for time and sanity sake, i'll waste the 5 seconds it takes to segment the day rather than have to retry 25 minutes over and over i'd rather retry the relevant part.

Hope to have day 2 complete and up soon!  Roll Eyes
Planned out your full route yet?

not entirely, I have a fairly good handle on days 1-3. There are a few things i may have to test on day 2, my first attempt through when i was still using VHS i would grab a few items after the zoo section on day 2. In preparation of day 3 i pick up a revive in central park because its quicker than grabbing the one in the market at SOHO. In the maze-like section of day 2 its faster to not follow the little girl hallucination as that direction causes you to come out further from a tool that is on my way to the boss, I may be able to skip that tool in the center of that box shaped path if it gives me the tool next to the revive (60% chance according to my guide). Depending on how long the central park section of the level takes, i may save before the boss as there always seems to be a bit of luck involved in his fight...

The best strategy i can come up with is to injure any head that pops up, not focusing on any one specifically and try to down them all around the same time. The final one is almost unavoidable if you want to kill him in any reasonable amount of time.

When i plan this game, i try to do one day at a time (no pun intended.) It has so much to do per day that I really cant do too much overall planning other than "what weapons and weapon traits and i going to grab?" "how many tools is this going to take?" and the same for armor. Also, day 5 is so ridiculously long i know that may be 2-3 segments without even getting that far yet XD.

according to my testing, it's actually impossible to get a tool there.

moar like 5 segments...

however long it takes =_=

right now i'm still holding out for an ideal day 2 run with any luck.... I am seriously considering saving before the worms as they are constantly the part i am failing on as i am low level at that point... I want to avoid leveling if possible so this save may be a necessary 5 second waste...
hey everyone!

Sorry for taking so long in between updates but i have some interesting news! Though i have a fail PS3 (it isn't ps2 compatible T_T) I learned today that it plays PS1 games perfectly fine! The ps3 has some features to try and make things look "better" so i popped in my Parasite Eve to give it a try. The only thing i can see that is different is the fact that colors seem much more vibrant, and as a side thing, with the memory card being a file on the PS3's hard drive, when you go to load or save, it doesn't have that checking memory card before you can access whats in it instantly.

So i have a few questions now,
Would it still be a valid run if i used my ps3?
The accessing memory card can save time and saving is slightly shorter, so i am curious.

and, assuming the above doesn't alter the qualification of my run,
Should i run on the PS3 since the graphical quality (colors at least) is better?
I want off the ride....
Zero I think you can do it on the PS3; I dont see why not. I think timing of segments if there are any problems resort to the "First system independant action" So it would be you clicking the "save" button. I Donno if it runs the game faster (I dont believe so) and the loads aren't too much better than the ps2.

I'd be interested to know.
loads in between screens of the game are the exact same time as far as i can tell, just accessing memory card when you first get to a phone and try to select memory card, there is a 3-4 second delay or something, but not when on ps3 so i guess i will run it there Smiley Hope to redo first few segments, i have been practicing a lot lately and i think i can skip all the saves except the one right before the boss, that is the only section that gives me trouble, like if i don't dodge his hits. Its so much shorter when you don't get hit.
All PS3s have PS1 compatibility, BTW. Somewhat offtopic, I know, but you seemed to be under hte impression you had an unusual model. >.>

As for the colors thing... That might be due to the output on the system or the cables you're using.

I just find it funny that they will software emulate a ps1 but refuse to do the same for ps2 for the models they didn't include the chipsets in...(bastards).

Not sure if it would be a cable thing, i am using the standard RCA cable that is used on all Playstation systems.
Probably just the output on the console itself then.

They did that because they ran into problems with PS2 emulation, I'm guessing. The PS2's CPU is a bitch.
Man, this is going to be a run to watch. It's the all time favorite JRPG for me. Even FF7 comes after Smiley
Still testing my routes, weapon upgrading, and trying to perfect dodging attacks. Days 1 and 2 I am pretty much set, police station is almost perfect, the boss is the only real trouble dodging because of his wide sweeping moves.

With day 3 i have done without getting into too much trouble but i am going to have to check if a little bit of leveling (just a few battles) will shave off some time in later levels.

Though it all depends... A few fights in day 3 or 4 or early 5 (doubt this option though). By EXP numbers, the later the better but its one of those strange balancing acts  Undecided Figure as well that if i'm going to go out of the way to get some exp (still just figuring it while doing my test times) i should grab an item or 2 that i wouldn't normally grab by going on my fastest paths... Or possibly, by leveling, i can eliminate the minor detours for not so necessary upgrades.

The further into the game I go, the more troublesome planning gets! The first few levels you can squeak by without picking up hardly anything but then there are some items you just cant pass up! I'll post again when i have something significant to show.

I don't really want to be picky, but I have to admit that you lost 2-3 seconds on the hit which missed the rat in first segment, I think it's quite re-doable Smiley
Webnations uploaded a tool-assisted speedrun of this game that I made a few months ago, check it out:

I didn't want to upload it to my channel because it's so long, so it would have been like 30 parts. I also have a EX mode TAS which continues from that TAS, but webnations hasn't uploaded it, at least not yet. I'll probably upload it to my channel later if he doesn't upload it.

There are some known improvements for this, but there might still be something useful for you speedrunners there. See the tasvideos topic for more information about the improvements: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7723&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20

This chinese suarara guy also has a pretty good speedrun of this game: http://www.youtube.com/user/suarara
do you have an AVI file you could upload somewhere for us to download?
Here's an avi version for you: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N6ZTYZOK

It includes an avi of CD1, CD2 and the EX Mode. It's useful so that you can see what I do in the menus. It's a little hard to see on youtube because you can't go frame by frame.

I also uploaded the EX Mode TAS to youtube now (the boring and unimportant parts are speeded up so that I can fit it into only 3 parts):

I just did a route test using modified versions of the above TAS's weapon (Club 1>M1911A1 pistol>M16A1 rifle>M11 machine gun w/x2 Shot>Micro UZ machine gun w/2x Shot, Burst, 1st, and Double) and armor (N Vest>Cm Vest 1>Cm Vest 2>Sv Protector) progressions, and it looks very promising for a console run.  A machine gun with the x2 shot ability looks like the fastest way to deal damage (x2 Shot lets you do more damage in fewer shots due to how the Shot abilities affect the damage formula, Burst and Double further increase your damage per turn output, and 1st lets you start some battles with a full ATB bar).  At this point I would say it would work best for a Segmented route for 2 main reasons:

1. Machine guns have the Random ability by default, which can really drag out battles if you get bad luck with targeting (ie the mixed-man enemies in the Hospital that can spawn additional enemies, or battles where enemies spread out instead of group together).  Getting rid of the Random ability requires either modding the Burst ability onto the gun (which overwrites Random) or using a Super Tool (the earliest opportunity to get one with more than a 1% success rate is the Giant Spider boss on Day 4 (20% steal chance), and since the first opportunity to get a weapon with the Burst ability is right afterward in the Chinatown Sewers, it's not worth using that Super Tool to remove Random.
2. The chest in the Hospital that contains the Micro UZ has a random chance of instead containing the vastly inferior M10.  The run could definitely still be finished with the M10, but would be much less competitive due to the M10's lower attack power and lack of extra ability slots.

A couple of other items I'm still researching are:

When exactly you can stop picking up ammo from chests and just use what you win from battles (I'm thinking Day 3 or early Day 4 at this point).
How many (if any) stat-boosting items are worth getting.
Whether all battles are fixed or if some are random (in my route test I got into a few extra battles in the Hospital and Museum that the TAS didn't - not sure if that was because those battles were random or if the TAS just avoided the trigger hitboxes).
What battles PE Haste is useful in (so far I've identified Giant Spider, Eve IV, and Ultimate Being III as battles where faster movement is helpful, along with the faster ATB recharge).
What battles PE Energy Shot is useful in (the TAS likes to use it against the pterodactyls in the Museum and some bosses, and I could see using it in more cases to avoid machine gun randomness).

I think the game can definitely be SS'd too, though it might make more sense to stick with handguns or rifles for more if not all of the game (with your final weapon being the M8000 or G3A3 w/x2 Shot, Burst, and Double), and using PE Energy Shot and Liberate more heavily against bosses to make up for your slower regular rate of fire.

A general strat that I've started experimenting with is analog switching.  PE was a very early DualShock-compatible game, so it doesn't support simultaneous analog/d-pad (turning on analog disables the d-pad).

To allow for more precise field movement (especially with a couple of hotspots/chests with weird hitboxes, like Melissa's diary in Day 1 and Daniel's Car in Day 3), I'm trying playing with analog on, then switching during the load times before/after battles (so I can use the d-pad for more precise menu work/targeting).  If I need to go into the field menu for equipment changing/modding, etc., I'll leave analog off after a battle (or switch during a room transition) and then play with the d-pad until the next battle/room transition.

Obviously, this would work best playing the original disc version of the game on PSX or PS2, since the DualShock/DualShock2 controllers have an analog button.  I think on PS3 (whether playing from disc or PSN download) it's possible to turn analog off/on using the game options menu that comes up when you press the PS button, though that would make for a pretty ugly speedrun (even though PS menu time probably doesn't count on the in-game timer).

Did a full route test today that clocked in at 2:56 (aiming for sub-2:45), and now looking at forgoing the Sv Protector and sticking with the Cm Vest 2 for the rest of the game.  This was because of the massive number of Medicine 3 and 4's that enemies drop in the Museum, and having the auto-heal ability for the Day 5 bosses and final battles will let you spend more time shooting and less time dodging/healing.

Now that I've done a couple playthroughs of the game, I think I can answer a few of my questions from above:

When exactly you can stop picking up ammo from chests and just use what you win from battles (I'm thinking Day 3 or early Day 4 at this point). As long as you use Club 1 on Day 1 up through at least Eve II, you shouldn't ever need to open ammo chests for a normal ending run unless you had really bad luck with ammo drops in Day 1 (in which case you should get a couple of ammo chests in Day 2 to make up).  Good ending would be another story, since you'd need to stock a lot of ammo for the Chrysler Building.
How many (if any) stat-boosting items are worth getting. Offense Up items are worth minor detours, since they can noticeably reduce the number of shots needed to kill enemies in a few cases.  Armor stat boosting items are worth getting if they're along the way (like the 2 chests near the end of Day 2 that contain either random armor upgrades or tools), but not worth detouring for.
Whether all battles are fixed or if some are random (in my route test I got into a few extra battles in the Hospital and Museum that the TAS didn't - not sure if that was because those battles were random or if the TAS just avoided the trigger hitboxes). Still working on this, though I've tested each battle in Days 1 and 2, and only found 1 battle that can be skipped (in Day 2, after getting the Zoo Key you can avoid a battle by moving east on the snowy path instead of the sidewalk).
What battles PE Haste is useful in (so far I've identified Giant Spider, Eve IV, and Ultimate Being III as battles where faster movement is helpful, along with the faster ATB recharge). So far PE Haste looks to save time and improve dodging against all bosses after you learn it (in Day 4), plus miniboss-type enemies like the scorpions in Day 5.
What battles PE Energy Shot is useful in (the TAS likes to use it against the pterodactyls in the Museum and some bosses, and I could see using it in more cases to avoid machine gun randomness). PE Energy Shot can be used to kill a bat in the Day 5 sewers that's otherwise quite hard to avoid being blinded by (since you fight it on a narrow walkway), 1-shot the pterodactyls in Day 5, and quickly finish off mixed men (Day 4) and scorpions (Day 5) after they've been softened up with a few shots.

Minor update: I'm on Day 3 now in my segmented PE run, and I've found that one of the battles in the NYPD basement appears to be random.  The battle with 1 dogman and 1 bird triggered by approaching the door to Wayne/Torres' room is fixed; but there's another battle (either with 1 dogman and 2 birds or 2 dogmen and 1 bird - I can't remember) that I've sometimes gotten into when going through that same basement hallway after the Wayne/Torres cutscene (either to the dog kennel, or going back upstairs afterward).

Like every other battle up until now, running away is useless as the hitbox for starting the battle just gets reset - I ended up changing my route plans to go directly to the 1st floor office and saving as soon as I get to the NYPD (as opposed to going to the basement first), so that I don't have to go through the 10 minutes of cutscenes at the start of Day 3 before rolling the dice with the basement battles.
