I just got off the phone with the accountant and he says we can just do it.
Now here's where we might disagree. I'd really like to do something more complex for those medallions. They'll be 3 inches across, and the lines will be about .025" wide, so these designs leave a huge amount of empty space. Did you see my earlier post with the medallion pics?
I can make those. They're too plain though, so I'll have to add some detail. For instance, the ether medallion will have a more detailed lightning bolt. It'll also get some snowflakes or something, as I think I recall that it would freeze stuff. Bombos shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Not sure what to do with quake. What is that supposed to be, a sine wave?
Ooo, this one? Yeah, I can elaborate on what's already there.
I'm bad with drawing lightning, so forgive the mockup, but is something like this possible? I made the lightning with the variable-width brush tool... so it's still vector, it's just not neat and outlined/stroked like the other shapes. Vector example
I hope I won't offend you by critiquing your work, but here goes...
I like the lightning that you added. I think it looks very good. I don't really like having the original art there. In addition to clashing with your work, its simplicity is just outdated in this modern format.
Now on the technical side, there may be a problem with your lightning because my machining works best with cutting lines, not solids, so it'll probably want to trace only the outlines, not fill in the bolts.
That's a good idea, only I'd reverse it. Put the big, fancy new design on the front where the detail can really be used. Put the old design on the back. The back will also have the name of the medallion and of course it will have that knob that sticks out for a chain or ribbon or whatever. I do intend to make it so these things can be worn.
Thanks Mike ;P We want to do our part to keep the hype machine spinning.
Hey this may be unpalatable to some people, but is there any potential for a prize made of bones? I live in the country and there are always dead things popping up. In just the past few months, I've found the skulls of a bear, a deer, and a raccoon. Any kind of skull helmet or necklace or something?
Again, my inner purist talking here, but doing the old design on the back and then essentially graffiti-ing all over it with the letters and hanging nob is a little too much horn-tooting for your new design, don't you think? It's kind of like saying "hey here's my awesome new design that is so much better than the old version, and here's the old version, with all the crap on it that I didn't want to mar up my awesome new design that is so awesome".
I'm pretty sure that wasn't your intention, but yeah. It might be better if you could get the hanging bit on the top of the medallion and not bother with the letters saying which one it is - most people bidding on it would know exactly what it is, and that way the purists can wear it with the old emblem to the front and anyone who wants to can wear it with the new emblem to the front.
That's kinda excessive mike. Nothing wrong with open discussions utilizing different viewpoints. Part of it will be what limitations Tom will have, the other part what people would actually want to bid for. Quenching the latter part will not be particularily optimal.
I think, honestly, looking at what was presented at the top of the page and what the original images are, here's my idea for the LTTP magic medals...
Keep the simplistic design. But in order to give it a little life, create the intentional nicks, breaks, and cuts shown in the original images. It would cause them to look like they have a history - that they've been well worn in a battle long ago, instead of something created in a factory last week.
That's my thoughts anyways. I don't know how easy it will be to do, but I'm sure you're smart enough to come up with something.
Also Tom, sorry I haven't replied back to your email about the Return to Dream Land sword. You've given me a lot to think about and how I want to tackle it. Though one thing I guess that I should ask (anybody can answer that handled it) - how tall was the Master Sword? I could use that as a reference to help me out. (I still don't know how easily it will be for you [Tom] to make, but the design is somewhat simplistic? I guess?)

Personally, I'm torn on this one. The updated designs will be really cool, but as a fan of the game (and something of a purist) the original designs are also very enticing. Especially where this is going to be a prize for a gaming marathon and not a piece of artwork being sold. Is there any way you could do both separately and we'd have the original and updated designs as a set?
EDIT: And on another note, just how many things have you already committed to? I suppose you're giving yourself a lot more time to do it this year, but it still seems like you're taking on a huge task.
I do have to say I really like the idea of smaller metal prizes like the Zelda/Metroid powerup medals in addition to 1 or 2 bigger ones like swords. Smaller prizes would let us give away more of them and boost donations for more games, and will hopefully generate more commissions for Tom/Kari since they'll be more affordable for many of our viewers.
As for the Link to the Past medallions, I think the original design would be better, as well. Even being simplistic, I think they'd be well received, and possibly better received by the purists, as mentioned. From what you've said, they'd also be easier to make.
My first idea was the Ocarina of Time medallions, but I don't know if you want to make that many medallions. The Hylian shield would be cool, and is a good idea, though.
I just couldn't help wondering about you talking about 'lines' … Are you planning on making the LttP-medallions plain 2D? Because I would have expected them to be 3D, the lightning flash/flames (I'm missing words here) coming forward as well as the edge and the middle of the sine-wave-thing-a-ma-jig-sy …
NXRunner: I don't know whether you're trying to troll or whether you're just tactless, but allow me to disabuse you of the notion that you can elucidate your point by telling people that their ideas are crap. It won't work on me, and I doubt that anyone else here is susceptible to this bizarre treatment.
Sir VG: Take your time. I don't want to discourage you, but it may not happen this year anyway. I intend to stick around here for as long as you fine people will have me, or until cancer kills us all, so we've got time. The master sword was 32" long in total and the blade was 24". More info is in the prizes thread. Regarding design simplicity, that's just something we'll have to discuss. It can go many ways.
mapler90210: The gunblade will definitely happen. The golden gauntlets, the yoshi coins, the Lttp medallions, and some sort of screw attack medallion may happen. I have a few other things going but I probably won't mention them until they're done.
randomzero: I looked up the OOT medallions, but they suffer from the same problem as the LttP medallions. The Hylian shield is on the long list. I'm not sure how to tackle it yet. The chain whip sounds like a good idea, but I'll need a good picture to work from. It's now on the list tentatively.
Aiko: You're right that the medallions should be 3D. This only occurred to me recently. I'll have to figure out how best to go about it.
Now for a few other points. I have no respect for tradition or conservatism as ends unto themselves. If a thing is good then it doesn't matter whether it's old or new, and if you choose to call it good then either you can explain your position or you are a liar. I like Lttp and I've beaten it about a million times, but I wouldn't call the artwork good. It was good for what it was. It's good for a SNES game. But when you try to translate those little 16-bit graphics into reality, things have to change. Memory was expensive back then and those simple graphics were all they could manage. Maybe I'm wrong about the history and the concept art from way back when was really that simple. Maybe the master sword always had the look it has now. I don't have any issues of Nintendo Power from 1992, so I'm just guessing.
This attitude of obsequity toward some tiny collection of pixels is not only baseless, but it contradicts all of SDA. If classic games are something to revere then why abuse them so happily and meticulously? Aren't you obligated to let each boss kill you at least a few times? I wonder whether the composers of music at OCRemix get hate mail from fanboys. I don't recall hearing one person complain about the master sword, despite the fact that it's quite different from any game version. All the colors are wrong, and the Triforce isn't even in the right place. None of that matters though because it looks great.
I don't want anyone to think that I'm not open to new options. I think that the above makes it clear that I am. All opinions are welcome, but if you're going to try to convince me to change my position then take the time to argue your position. Waving your hands and saying "come on, just do it my way" is not satisfactory. I can't speak for anyone else, but I expect that Kari, Mercury, Mecha Richter and everyone else operate similarly.
Back to prizes: I'm having some trouble with the gunblade and I'd like the opinion of the community. I was drawing up blueprints today, but I just couldn't make it work. I can't really make it true to the game because metal is heavier than pixels and the thing would be unwieldy if made to those proportions.
Here are a few ways that it could go: 1. Make the gun part like in the game, but make a smaller blade. 2. Make it look like one of the real gunblades that was actually used in the 18th and 19th centuries. 3. Make it look like any of a number of fan-made renders that are more realistic. 4. Make up something of my own based on whatever looks good.
I may have to start a poll on this one if I get enough interest.
To Mike and Tom: When did I say to scrap the newer models entirely? What I said was that it wouldn't hurt to offer both options, for both sides, on equal ground, so that it appeals to the most possible donators (not to mention cosplayers).
Mike: I know you don't like me because of the issues prior to AGDQ2, but I'm trying to not be petty about it, so don't give me reasons to get aggravated again with you. When someone asks for ideas or criticism, that's what you're going to get. If you DON'T like that criticism, you're perfectly welcome to ignore it.
Which also goes to Tom: No, I'm not trolling. Nor did I say that your idea was "crap" - I outright said that I agreed with the idea of putting the new design on the front and the old on the back. If you'd prefer to ignore that, then by all means, ignore it.
I'm going to stop posting in this thread now, and I'll keep in mind that the NEXT time someone asks for ideas or criticism, they may not actually want it.
About the medallions and keeping them original: Video game fans are some of the most resistant people to change, especially when it comes to older classic games, because fans want things to be like the way they remembered them. It's not because they necessarily hate the new design or something. I think that's why some people want the original design whether it's feasible or not. I'm not defending these people, I'm just trying to explain what they might be thinking.
I personally like the redesigned medallion. And wait, the master sword wasn't bright blue, red, or gold like an alttp?
About the gunblade, if we had pictures of each choice, then it would make deciding a lot easier. Then again, it might be hard to find pictures of some of the choices.
Is the gunblade being made for AGDQ 2013, or for SGDQ? Cause I thought FF8 was being played at SGDQ. Not that the prize absolutely has to be from a game that is being played.
