I was looking for any glitches that could possibly cutback on travel time. I didn't find anything, but I would like to find out if there is something that could increase the speed of either Rico or vehicles through the use of a glitch or maybe something that would allow you to be extracted to locations regardless of whether or not you discovered the location.
The only notable glitches that were listed on a few sites were just some graphical glitches and glitches that wouldn't be of any use in a speedrun.

As of right now, my goal is sub 4:45:xx. If some glitch could be found that would allow for increased speed, "wrong-warping" with the extraction system, or really anything that'll cutback on travel time, I would go for an even lower time.

I just can't help myself with this game. I said I was done with it, but I was drawn back to it due to a sloppy run months ago.

So now I'm back to this game and all missions. I'm rerouting it, though. The old route was odd with what missions were done in what order.
Got the first few missions down, already, along with a handful of other notes regarding  missions, traveling, and JC2 in general (wall of text, by the way):

Currently, my goal is sub 4:30. The old route could've reached 4:30 if worked hard enough, so my hope is the optimized route will make a time of 4:30 easily obtainable after a few attempts.
Still hoping for a game-breaking glitch to be discovered. If not for all missions, then definitely for a viable any% category.

I thought this was odd because I got a roughly similar RTA time with this run as I did with my previous PB. There was quite a few mistakes in this PB, though. Not to mention quite a few deaths and failed missions.

I got lazy with the second half of routing, so there aren't too many details for the missions or how to get to them.

Some interesting things did get brought up during my run by a viewer I was talking with:
-Death warps: Killing yourself to lose heat and teleport to the nearest stronghold. This could be used to extract to locations without having to wait to lose heat or this could be used to get to missions without ordering a jet or extraction quicker.
-Jet takeoffs: While not brought up directly, I was talking about the takeoff mechanics of jets in JC2 with this chatter and it made me think of how they behaved; jets will take off if they have enough speed on a flat surface or were knocked into the air with a little bit of a speed behind them or even fell off the ground (e.g., falling off a cliff or steep hill) with some speed. They will NOT take off if they are going down a ramp (a good example of this is the dish area during the mission Taking Care of the Dishes).

I want to say there was some other interesting topics that were brought up during this run, but I can't remember them. I did softlock during one of the stronghold missions. I believe it was Roaches Stronghold mission 2 (it was one where you aren't given a chaingun at the end of the mission); I got in the helicopter to fend off the attackers at the end, but after killing all of the enemies, the stronghold commander didn't show up. I'll post the highlight of it (once I get it highlighted).

Has anyone tried skipping to the final mission? (6 or 7 because 6 immediately leads to 7)

I started up a new game and managed to clip into the dome of the 6th mission: (On my mercenary file, I managed to clip all the way through the front end of the mountain's face to the inside of the dome, I have screenies of that too. But you only need to clip through the dome.)

I can't seem to trigger any of the mission events though, it won't start.
I thought maybe saving inside some of these areas will make your save think you're 'in' the mission and you can then quit and load into it.
Standing in this area and saving doesn't do that, but in some other cases it may be possible.
Maybe if I start an agency mission that has no bounds limit and I can freeroam to this area and try to trigger some event, then save, reload, and be in the 6th mission.
Also the submarine's lights are visible over the water where it should be. Maybe finding a glitch to trigger an event at that location could skip right to the final fight. They're located at X:27220; Y:26200.

It's worth trying to pull off. After all, it would make the run less take than 30 minutes, rather than 5 hours

Edit: Looks like Agency mission 3 does have a bounds limit.

hey guys, i made this account to make this post, idk how many ppl will see it.

im doing speed runs on PC, not on a console, but since this is the only thread i can find, ill post here.

ive figured out a way to beat Just Cause 2 without using the black market in just under 3 hours (2:54:56 IGT/RLT 2:56:03).

Anyone actively speed running this game?

I am considering on optimizing this game any% and getting a speed run together. It is such an interesting game and I think it would be great to stream(should have good viewer appeal).

So many options on how to complete this run, but seems the main goal is to earn the required amount of chaos to unlock all agency missions.

EDIT: I will be doing this on PC. Are there any notable differences between the PC/console versions?

It doesn't seem to be a problem on PC, for the jet I tested anyway.

I went through the Just Cause 2 wiki and confirmed a few useful glitches:

1. There is an interesting propaganda trailer in Panau City. When you destroy it, you get 1000 chaos. If you cause a game reload after you destroy it, it respawns, allowing you to destroy it again for more chaos. A decent way to do this I found was to shoot it close range with rockets/a clusterbomb or some other weapon. Have to time how long it takes to destroy it once, but I suspect you could grind a lot of chaos from it.

2. If you have a machine gun, there is a way you can get 500 ammo for it(until you load a game again). What you do is hop in a vehicle with a machine gun turret(boat or jeep, not the barrel MG). Then save the game, and load it immediately(do not quit from the pause menu). You will get a glitched out weapon. If you immediately enter a vehicle then hop out, you will get your machine gun back with 500 ammo.

3. This one is the most interesting. Apparently if you fly a jet from the inside out over the bridge crossing between the residential and financial districts in Panau City, it causes a statue to be destroyed(you get chaos from it). I managed to achieve this once, so it is definitely a thing. Struggling to repeat it. All I can think is that a trigger was left over the bridge somewhere. I am most interested in whether it can be triggered multiple times.
I have located the exact spot where the trigger is over the bridge. It genuinely destroys a statue on the other side of the city.

I do not understand why it is there, but unfortunately it isn't possible to repeat it, so no advantage from it.
I just got a odd glitch which may be useful. I haven't been able to repeat it, now recording everything incase something like that happens again.

I was on the first agency mission. Right at the start after getting the first card, when you go to take out that group of guards with the red barrels, I grappled behind the red barrels and hit them with my lash.

I am not entirely sure what happened, but I think while mid grapple, the explosion hit me. My body just wanted to keep flying off into the distance unless I grappled the side of the mountain. It was like when I grappled, it disables the gravity on my character. Then getting hit by the explosion cancelled the grapple, gave me the force from the explosion but kept the gravity disabled.

If this could be replicated, it could be a possible way of travelling long distances pretty quickly.
I have attached a spreadsheet. It has details I have gathered from a combination of the Just Cause 2 wiki and going through every mission.

Inside this spreadsheet are all the missions, the chaos they give, the required chaos and mission to be able to start them, the (x,y) location for mission start and the (x,y) location for mission end. Also there is a distance matrix that calculates the distance between the start/end of each pair of missions. In theory, enough information is in here to get a semi-optimal route(it is agnostic to the travel method). I am not too sure how to approach it yet though, as it is a complex optimisation problem.

I'll see what I can do though. Brute force would be painful, though should be some assumptions which will narrow down the possibilities.

I'm interested in running this aswell and I think that the barrel glitch might be a good way of getting around, if we could position ourselves in the right place we could try and get close to where the next mission is.

It's late and I have work in the morning but I'll try and test this tomorrow and see what I can do.
Awesome, I haven't been able to replicate it again.

I am going to try to come up with an optimal route tonight. I have all the data I need, now just need to find some graph theory or something to calculate the shortest distance between nodes with constraints. Tongue I have some ideas.
It might be a timing thing, or could be that particular barrel. I'll try and see if I can time how long a barrel takes to blow up after you melee and whether that time is random or a set integer.

The other route is just to blow stuff up to get the required chaos, we might need to have a list of the objects that, when destroyed, give Chaos and how much chaos for that object. Then we could do it that way.

It's been a while since I have played Just Cause 2 but I don't think that the Agency missions have any kind of constraints to be playable apart from the Chaos, for instance, you don't need to complete a certain Faction mission before they will appear.

So this might be a way forward aswell, it might end up cutting the amount of time we spend trying  to get Chaos through the Faction Missions. It might be worth trying to find out how long a mission takes and how much Chaos you will get per second from each mission, Cps if you will Tongue

Then we might be able to say, that mission takes too long for the amount of Chaos it gives, we would be faster to use the Panau Trailer glitch to get the Chaos instead, or something similar.
It depends which category we do. I am planning to do allmissions% at the moment. I believe any% is fastest by just completing minimum amounts of missions, then spending the rest of the time blowing stuff up. Blowing up a lot of stuff for hours isn't too fun. It may be good to confirm that is the case though. Tongue

There are a few constraints around the place. Agency missions need to have a chaos requirement, and also need previous agency missions to have been complete.

Strongholds have chaos requirements. Faction missions have chaos requirements as well as a stronghold requirement.

I have input this all into my application, and ran an optimization algorithm. Essentially I formed a massive graph connecting all missions to each other. I then started with the first agency mission, and had the algorithm check all other missions linked to it. It would skip a faction mission if one of the following conditions were true:

1) The missions was already complete
2) The chaos requirements were above the current chaos obtained
3) The mission requirements have not been met(ie. the required stronghold has not been completed)

If all these conditions are false, the algorithm added it to a list of potential missions.

After processing all missions linked to the current mission, it would choose the closest mission(measured from the end point of the current mission to the start point of the potential mission, not taking into account transportation factors) with a random perturbation.

The random perturbation was a random number from a normal distribution with an average of zero. The standard deviation is set in the options and is mentioned at the start of the run. The random number generator is controlled by a seed which is also displayed. This ensures that the mission with the "closest distance" wasn't always chosen, so that other routes had a chance. Because often later on in the graph taking a less optimal mission earlier on opens up better possibilities later on(which is what actually happened).

Anyway, after choosing the next mission, it repeats this process until all missions have been completed(or a solution can not be found).

A key assumption to this is that after every mission, you get a constant addition of chaos from destroying objects. I calculated this based off of a casual run I did were I destroyed all objects around me that wasted minimal time. I did spend a little bit of additional time gathering 5000 chaos destroying an oil pipeline, so keep that in mind. We may have to adjust this and rerun, the amount used is shown in the run log.

I ran the algorithm for 200,000 seeds. This may not be the true optimal route, but compared to my casual route which totaled a distance of 362,000, this route is a major improvement. However it needs to be confirmed as I could have made a mistake in the inputs.

Yeah I think I'd run any% for the time being, is there anyway your application could do a run for any% at all? that would be interesting to look at...
Way too much of my night haha, I am going to start to try out some of this route.

I am not sure if I can modify it to do any%. I would say you should investigate how fast you can get chaos from destroying things. MopeyJoe could only complete all missions in around 5 hours.

The other guy that posted claiming he did any% in about 2.5-3 hours, here are some screenshots he took:

He seemed to complete it in 4 hours. Looking at the stats he completed 5 stronghold missions, 1 faction mission and all agency missions. The rest was blowing up stuff. So just based on that, any% will most likely involve routing blowing up stuff. Tongue

But yah, because of that you will not really be routing missions, only areas where you can gain chaos.
Something of interested, I somehow managed to get the MG graphics where it shows what gun I am currently holding, when I was holding a SMG. I think I did this by picking up a machine gun from its turret. Then I picked up SMG ammo off of the ground, which switched to my SMG but kept the MG graphic? Not too sure, but it seemed to only be a graphical glitch.

It would be pretty awesome if we could somehow trick the game into thinking we have a MG, but keep the speed and properties of something like a SMG.

There are a lot of techniques I am using to try to speed up the run. I'll start to document them over the next few days.

Indeed it would be, that's an interesting theory. Whenever I played I always found that a magnum dual wield was one of the strongest weapons and could one shot damn near anything apart from bosses, however the easiest way to blow things up is either a rocket launcher of C4, both of which are fairly late game weapons. I'll have a mess around tonight and see what I can come up with.
Yeah I haven't tried out the dual magnums, but dual SMG's are very strong as well.

I tried a run, going to do it over a couple of days. But found that there are a lot of annoying missions which can mess you over. A death can put you back quite a bit of time. Also the physics can be very annoying. Tongue I had a limo drive up a tree at one point. Those limos, the developers were purely sadistic. Grappling also needs improvement, you need to be very precise with your location and inputs, otherwise you can lose a lot of time.

The route though was pretty solid. Since there are so many missions, my plan is to get a baseline time, confirm the route is good, then work on each level individually and find the best way to travel between them.

The strategy I use is dual SMG and an assault rifle. I use the assault rifle only for blowing up objects while doing missions, as that gives me chaos that I need in order not to waste time later on.

I think one area I need to research into is what sort of weapon upgrades/other vehicles are available. Currently I am exclusively using the Silverbolt jet to travel. I am not sure if there is a faster or more cost effective alternative.
