Ok I'm just going to throw a bunch of names, and obviously as I haven't submitted a run yet, I'll just sound like a random guy saying he "can run this game !!" but I'm pretty experienced with PC FPS (have mostly played that for the last 13 years basically), particularly Quake and such, and I think the only big type of games missing in this marathon were PC FPS. Console FPS can be fun, challenging, entertaining to watch and all, but consoles FPS and PC FPS are two really different things, I think everybody agrees on that. One of the main factors being obviously speed. (Move speed for Quake and all particularly, but when i'm talking about speed, I mean speed to aim too, and I think it's very important).

Anyway, the next marathon will be in a long time I guess, but when that time come, if you're interested in having PC FPS, here are a bunch of games that would be cool imho (and that I could train for, providing streams/SS vids and all) :

- Quake, particularly 1 and 2 obviously. I'm currently doing a Quake 3 SS run but I don't think it would be appropriate at all for a marathon. Q1 and Q2 would be great though.
- Wolfenstein 3D. I have planned to train (among a few others things) that to submit a run to SDA actually, when i'll be done with Q3.
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I think RTCW could be pretty cool for a marathon. I'm experienced with the game, far less than the person who submitted a run obviously, but someone could run this game imho.
- Doom. I only know Doom 1 and 3. I think Doom 3 is a bit boring, I wouldn't personnally be interested in doing it but i guess some people would be interested in watching it. Doom 1 is great (hi obvious statement). I don't know Doom 2 at all.

-Startropics would be good.

See, Mike, I'm not the only one! And this had absolutely no input from me, as much as I wholeheartedly endorse this!

Also, more disney bloc.  Should I attend next year, I definitely will be able to run Darkwing Duck.

Everything's better with Magitek
Concerning RPGs: I liked that this year we didn't repeat any RPGs from last year's marathon.  I worry that people will get bored if we do the same RPGs over and over, since they're so long and won't be much different from year to year due to having to use safe SS strategies.

Final Fantasy VII was definitely a very popular RPG that we didn't have this year.  If there's enough interest I could probably do it, although it'd be great if we could get GarlandG or lolo26 who have actually completed SS runs of FFVII.  (Sorry I never contacted them about this year's marathon.)  However, I'd feel more comfortable running FFX, as long as it's the only RPG I'd be doing for the marathon, but I know it's not an ideal game for a marathon.  I bring up FFX because my goal is to complete a SS run of it this year, so I'll really practiced up on it.

I don't know much about most other RPG series, so I hope others will chime in with their thoughts.

-Myst was too short, and it might be neat to have it or a similar game run (without skipping to the end) -- maybe

You can't in good faith do a run of Myst without skipping to the end, as the game consists entirely of discovering keys to puzzles that eventually lead you to the final discovery of the page (and the choice of book). [...] A Riven run would make more sense, since it was designed to be more linear, and you can't simply go do the ending.

i really don't think riven or "myst 100%" would be good games for a marathon as much as i'd like to see them. part of what makes myst tolerable/fun to watch is that it's under a minute and a half. any longer and it would just become a boring slideshow.
#speedrunslive to race games!!!
i think that if enough good zelda players come to next years marathon again, a mst(medallions/stones/temples) race would be ideal for viewing imo because it features a lot more tricks and is much more fun to watch, although it is 3-4 hours long.

Grandia maybe a good one to look into (I'm thinking Grandia II).  Skies of Arcadia Legends would be very, very long.  Evolution (I, II, or Worlds)?  Or if someone has a PSP and time to work on it, maybe do Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep?

I'm sure that I could think of some others...
I survived MIKE-Fest 1
I vote for a Marathon verification topic to sort out because otherwise we will run over 500h with 735 people

Or of course a Dictator topic for approval of runs Cheesy

also FFX is a great

1. What games were really enjoyable this year and should be in another marathon?

Most of the games that were really enjoyable were featured in 2010's CGDQ.
For the new entries I did enjoy watching:
Mario Kart 64 2-player GP
Metroid Fusion
MJ's Moonwalker
120 Star SM64 run
Trials HD
Pokémon Yellow (I only saw the start up to catching Ivysaur).

2. What games were missing and should be in next year's marathon?

For 2012:
Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light NG+ prefered for having all of the weapons and max health/ammo
Scott Pilgrim Vs The World NG+ run, mainly because starting off at a low level is slow paced
Limbo Although popular it's pretty linear and there isn't many speed tricks
Super Meat Boy Many viewers on Ustream Chat requested this game to be on the Marathon.
'Splosion Man A pretty lengthy Arcade Platformer

Donkey Kong Country Returns. I haven't played this game yet but is this game good enough for the marathon?
Zelda Skyward Sword Very unlikely to be in the marathon next year if this game is released late 2011.
Zelda Minish Cap. Has some pretty cool Ocarina glitching, too bad the invicibility frames after taking damage is very short

A (3)DS game  You know what I am going to say here

3. What games were going to be in this year's marathon but were cut?

Shadow Complex, Streets of Rage 1, Golden Axe 1
Kirby's Epic Yarn Win and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

The most requested games I saw via chat were Demon's Souls, EarthBound, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Super Meat Boy, Final Fantasy (1), and a general request for more FPS runs (Goldeneye being one of the more common ones brought up). Of the games we ran, beyond the obvious favorites (Mario series, Ocarina of Time, etc.), some of the ones that I noticed generating an unexpected amount of interest include Blaster Master, Pokemon, Katamari Damacy, and Cave Story. And, of course, Color a Dinosaur Wink

The piano runs were extremely popular, as always, and there were many requests for specific games to be piano accompanied next year (DKC series and Zelda series were probably the most common requested ones).

The races were popular, at least for the people who were able to watch them without lag. Provided that we can work this out (having a dedicated computer already set up to capture/stream the second television should go a long way towards this, as well as saving setup time), I think having more races would be a good idea. I could easily learn some of the shorter games (like SMB1 or SMB2) well enough to make for some close races, if necessary.

I'm personally in favor of not trying to theme our marathons anymore (we could just call it GDQ3 or some such), but if we absolutely must, may I suggest an old vs. new generation theme. For instance, we could pair games like LoZ alongside Twilight Princess, Nightmare in Dreamland alongside Epic Yarn, DKC with DKCR, and Goldeneye 64 with the new Wii version. If we went this route, I guess we could name the marathon something like GDQ: the Next Generation Tongue

To be a little less objective, I would personally love to see FFX run next year, both because it's my favorite game in the series, and because it's incredibly entertaining to watch Essentia run it. I think a run of DK64 with all the new tricks would be pretty exciting as well.
Is PJ
I have too many ideas to list here, and most of them are bad.  I'll summarize.

If I go to the next marathon, I definitely want at least one run that isn't a race/special feature.  I really like talking/commenting about the game while I play, and definitely encourage others to joke around during my runs.  I can't really do that during a race or during piano.  Those are very entertaining, for sure, but I want a chance to comment some more next year.  Smiley

Also, I have another mystery game prepared for next year.  Under 10 minutes.  Not as good as CaD, but it might be entertaining.

Seconded. At least the first episode of each saga.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Mystery game periods are a good idea. The reaction to Color a Dinosaur was pretty entertaining. Some RPGs:

Dragon Age
Eternal Sonata
Crusader of Centy
Fallout 1 (10 minutes?)
Alundra
Illusion of Gaia
Soul Blazer
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
Star Ocean: The Second Star Story
Suikoden
Valykrie Profile
Wild Arms
King's Field (PS2 one maybe)
Odin Sphere
Okage Shadow King
Arcana
Eye of the Beholder
Breath of Fire
Fable

I only mentioned the first in a series, but sometimes the 2nd or 3rd is more popular. I believe most of these would be under 10 hours, the majority closer to 5 or lower.

Some other games that might be interesting:
Legacy of the Wizard
1 of Shadow Gate/Deja Vu/Uninvited

I think it'd be cool to have people participating in the marathon decide on a big game like this beforehand, and play off to see who would run it. There could even be a race between the top three or four people depending on how many people were going to go for it.

Just remembered...Eternal Darkness was another game I saw a lot of requests for which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet.
Weegee Time
There actually was a lot of requests for a Suikoden game, I believe the most was for Suikoden II.

Also, Rhapsody would be adorably awesome.
Fucking Weeaboo
I never thought Rhapsody got much love.  I'll be glad to do it for next year's marathon if people want to see it.  (I own both the DS and PS1 versions, but the PS1 is much better by far.)
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
I admit that I am going to look into what needs to be done so that I can see if I can try to join in next year's marathon...  Still, as for suggestions, I did make one suggestion for MM powered up race (although it wouldn't be much of a race depending on the character you get), meanwhile I'm also looking into basara as well...  If Basara is a possibility, then a possible donation race could be which character you would like to see the runner use...

It is going to be a while before the next marathon, so that leaves plenty of time to figure out what games I could run...
MrGrunz is a guay
If I can come to the next marathon, I would love to do an ocarina of time all dungeons run.  Its MUCH more entertaining than dumb any% catching bugs all day, but it'll last about 3 hours.

As for other runs I'd like to see/could bring in a lot of donations - Super Mario Galaxy, Sunshine, NSMB Wii, DK64 , Majora's Mask (not done by jiano :P) and maybe some more 100% runs.
Waiting hurts my soul...
I say the mini-marathon should have a day of poverty gaming. There's been enough trading going on for people to be able to stream their games among other games people already have and enjoy.

Don't forget, that the marathons are for entertaining, so even if the game isn't that popular or interesting or fast, the commentary that goes along with it could more than make up for it. I'm sure some people watch to see a game they have a little interest in playing, but no time to actually play it.

Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
Earthbound definitely, since I want to play it next year if I can. I've been working on and off with it the past half year or so, trying to consistently get through the glitched route of the game. I know the chat would most likely want to see the full game, but I don't think I could play 5-6 hours consistently on this game, especially not with a job. That, plus I don't remember how to speedrun the full game well enough, since I gave up on that after the current run was posted to the site. The glitched version would probably max out at about 3 and a half hours, with horrid luck.
Sonical!

I second this idea. Donkey Kong Country Returns was mentioned before and should be quite entertaining as well.

I'll start practicing.
I'd quite like to do a LittleBigPlanet run. I'm practicing for one atm, but I've still got a long way to go. Of course, since I'm still in school I might not be able to make it depending on when it is, and even I can I might not have enough money to go to America.
1-Up!
Even if you can't make it to the next marathon, a LittleBigPlanet run would be a great addition to the site!
Oh by the way, I don't know if anybody brought that up yet, but I was thinking that a multi-game race could be fun, like some sort of video games decathlon. Not necessarily same franchise, like smb 1 2 3 in a row, but it could be a multi type race.

Random example on the spot, the same players would have to race in a row on :
super mario bros 3
metal slug (a not too long one)
Portal

It could defeat the purpose of speedrunning though, as players good with the 3 games will be less fast than the specialists of each game.
