Question: What was Essentia's final time on CT, and was it enough to make poxnor donate the $1200? I fell asleep before the end of that run.

Other than that, great job guys. I enjoyed all that I watched. I'm also convinced that Satoryu never sleeps.

nes, don't apologize. i know you don't have as much experience with the game and i'm glad the game was represented at the marathon at all. actually, the good thing about your run was that you were creating so many chains that you got so many chances at frame tricks - and pulled off 2 of them! so you got $40 from me when otherwise you might've gotten nothing, haha. but again, i'm glad the game was played.

this is going to be a pretty long post, apologies. gonna go through the whole schedule here.

arrow - really liked your mm9 run, and katamari was fun

cody - keeping a good spirit throughout the marathon even after halo. i only caught some of your portal run but it looked good and i heard it was good too. hopefully i can meet you next year!

andrewg - for killing the right lakitu in the wrong game :p shame you didn't play up to your standards in your games. hopefully we can have some smb races next year.

rom - brought the laughs as usual. i was super sad you dropped out of smw - especially retrospectively because if you didn't screw up you would've beat mr. terrible up there, haha. mario kart was really hilarious, and the sotn race was riveting. i hope if i get out to next marathon that we can shoot the shit about smrpg blues during my run.

heidman - you're a cooler guy than i've been thinking. your mashing is so good that bullets disappeared on stream due to fps restrictions, and even though i know you think your runs were shit, me and everyone else included was very impressed, nice job.

mikwuyma - putting on the marathon! it was truly awesome, and pretty damn well-run for only our second shot at this. i appreciated that you noted my username for my first few donations, and that you called me the true smrpg beast :p your runs were consistently solid. rka and final fight were highlights of the marathon for me.

feasel - snake rattle n roll was awesome, you really performed at both your games. i'm disappointed that the viewers couldn't see more of you, both in terms of gameplay and being in the marathon room

jman - i'm completely serious here: the mother brain clutch kill was the single best moment of the marathon for me. it was absolutely euphoric when you jumped through that tiny little gap between the two frozen spaghettios and got the kill with no spare hits and only 1 missile. the 6-2 damage boost was also another highlight. you definitely added a lot to the character of the marathon room, hope i can meet you next year

uranium - i only caught some of both metal storm & blaster master, but i was impressed with the play i saw from both. will definitely check out the recorded videos of both.

pj - great performance in pianotoads. color a dinosaur was fun times and i of course <3'd your hat. i really regret not getting to meet you, hopefully next year (or earlier at barcade Smiley )!

sinister - nice job with mtpo, even though you probably weren't happy with your performance. i liked your commentary

neskamikaze - superb job with dr. mario, though now and then i did catch missed opportunities Wink one of my biggest regrets about not getting out there this year was being unable to race you and essentia. will try to do so next year. again, no sweats about tetris attack, seriously. on the contrary mike should thank you for getting the most money out of me of anyone else at the marathon, ha. i unfortunately missed most of your thps2 run, but i did catch a little and that little was very entertaining. and i will fight you in mario party :C

trihex - i'm sure this'll be coming off broken recordy but yoshi's island. wow. fucking wow.

tjp - i was hoping for a shoutout for lending you my cart Wink but great job anyway. pulling off the jumproll live was amazing and a highlight. unfortunately i haven't played mp2 so i didn't watch that one.

essentia - even though you lost, well played @ dr. mario. for some reason i only watched part of dkc2, but it was mostly great as usual. and shucks about bad lavos core luck.

josh - huge shoutout man, you were basically my human link to the marathon, chatting with me on irc and coming to my Thing, ha. even though you say your cv3 was 'ass' i still enjoyed it a lot, and you should thank me for starting the ball with grant donations! cv1 was superb and cv4 almost as good. unfortunately i had to miss sor2 for some reason i can't remember. but seriously, i had a great time with you during a good portion of the marathon - ironic that i feel closer to you now when i wasn't even there, lol.

satoryu - you performed very well during both your games, great job man. that sotn race was seriously exciting, and dxc vs. rondo was also fun to watch even though it wasn't a proper race AND i don't even know either game!

sir vg - nice run of rondo. i missed actraiser and a lot of nidl though, sry

kareshi - the pianoman. those races owned with your accompaniment. the surprise ff4 boss theme was one of my very favorite marathon moments. plus! you beasted gng in the face of bullshit luck. i'm extremely impressed with how well you can deal with the stuff in that game. shame about getting caught up at level 3 of sgng round 1, and i passed out for round 2 - will watch that eventually.

pootrain - i've actually played the trials flash game. your trials hd run was much more entertaining as a result. you did good man! i didn't catch thps1 though, sorry about that. needed to get some sleep during this beast.

smk - you brought live run commentary to entirely new heights. if i make it to next marathon i hope to at least come close to the performance you put on with smrpg, though i know that's kind of impossible for me. seriously, you're a superb speaker/commentator. catching the ivysaur was close to j's metroid clutch in terms of best marathon moments. also, one of the biggest lols was relying on an Official Strategy Guide for your run route. but seriously venonat not learning teleport is whack.

vorpaledge - thanks for helping to make the rka race so amazing. that was a top 3 run/race of the marathon for me tbh. but i expect you to at LEAST cut the :40 next year :p

biospark - i don't know metroid fusion whatsoever and i don't know you that well either but what i watched looked really good. the chat gave you high praise at least. nice job!

nate - it was sublime/surreal seeing you play for the marathon. you've always filled a sort of 'wheels behind the scene that had his prime (pardon) in the past' role to me, and it was cool seeing you wreck the game. you were pretty close behind smk for best commentary too. also, zoid in chat! damn, i missed it!

breakdown - thank you for being as good of a commentator/marathon organizer/energizer as last year. you're the only person that truly pulls off bestowal of manhood. the clutch ganon fight in zelda 1 was awesome - not quite mother brain level, but close. it's really too bad you couldn't pull off a similar fight in lttp, however! i was chatting with krystal during your run and she was impressed with your overall execution and the hard tricks you pulled off given the fact you had to crunch this game specifically for the marathon. i'm sure you'll hear praise from her later about your laser trick execution (i don't know what it's actually called). your earthworm jim was actually probably one of the best executions of the entire marathon. and moonwalker was funny.

tigger - ladx was the only run in the marathon i didn't watch because i plan to play the game soon and didn't want to be spoiled. but i heard you beasted!

the oot racers - even though i have never played oot (yes lol) i was very entertained anyway. shucks about the death at the end cosmo. i don't know what is involved with the game freeze jiano was trying to pull off but i'm sure it would've been the comedic highlight of the marathon had he pulled it off.

jiano - i've watched a lot of your streams/recorded videos and somehow your 120 run was a sublime experience because of it. like a lot of childhood nostalgia and joy of knowing all the tricks and awe of the overall solid execution mixed for something really special. i liked that the room was filled and mostly very quiet in captivation. i wish that the run could've been deathless, ah well. too bad 1-star wasn't so good but i guess that run was particularly for the benefit of the casual faction of the audience.

peaches - i told you this in irc anyway but outstanding run in spite of screwy tnt. bonus hex wasn't quite as good but was still fun to watch.

cosmo - maybe the master course on the whole was not your best but the expert through m3 was breathtaking tbh. seriously i want to learn the game after watching your run, maybe i'll get in a race sometime down the line after i get smrpg done. also i wish i could've played mario party 3 with you and the others.

aleckermit - pretty great mk64 play, i enuoyed the contrast between you and rom during the run, funny shit

trek - i was just too fucking tired to watch bk, sorry man. i heard you had an unfortunate death which costed a lot of time but that you ruled otherwise. i did catch the grunty battle actually, least you ended solid!

stanski - you were one of the overall best presences in the marathon room when you were around. fucking great job with sonic 2 dude. that has been one of my greatest desires in terms of speedrunning ever since i first watched your run - seeing you run sonic 2 live. lived up to my expectations. i had to miss alternative beast though, sucks.

rane - sorry i've been getting the smrpg file name wrong all this time (though allcaps is even better imo). JUST missing the sotn oob was heartbreaking.

emptyeye - you still played well in battletoads race, good job. and final fight was extremely entertaining. your booming presence was once again appreciated, and i'm looking forward to the caperun video :p

axel - run a better game next year :W but damn i really will have to check out this blindfolded thing sometime, i saw that everyone went complete apeshit over that. sounds mighty impressive.

flicky - the emergent star commentator of this 2nd installment of the marathon. your accent rules dude, and you're a pretty funny guy to boot. i didn't watch your run though unfortunately, sleep + i don't play new games, sorry.

moooh - thanks for answering me several times on irc when i had questions/suggestions. shame that you lost momentum early in the ewj race.

mercury - the hats looked really swell, i'm bummed i didn't win one.

ani - sly honestly looks like a really cool game. i don't know if your run was good or not but i heard it was good so good job.

nitrodon - i heard cave story was beast, but i only watched a little sadly.

josh, jape, withhelde, sn64, and everyone else who came to my Thing: thanks guys, i really enjoyed that and appreciate it.

anyone not mentioned: sorry, i didn't watch your runs because i haven't played the games, or i was too tired to watch.

will have more about general things later (and criticisms/complains too) but i wanted to get all individual shoutouts/comments out there first!

Final thoughts for SDA marathon 2011: I fell asleep at 2:30pm today and just woke up 10 minutes ago. Jesus my sleep schedule is completely wrecked. Great job everyone!
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
Normally I'm someone who can put together a wall of text about what I've seen, but in this is one time I really can't do that since there were too many awesome moments this year...  Each game had their own unique moments and I can't say everything straight off in one moment...

All that I will say is congrats/thanks to everyone who ran the marathon, the runners for doing the games, and everyone else who donated...

Hopefully we will see even more next year and hopefully contribute more next time...
cyghfer, I could have sworn I pulled off a 4 combo in Dr. Mario, but I may have been mistaken. I was really hoping to race you in Tetris Attack so I could actually get to play somebody better than me in that game. Next year I will take on you and anybody else in Mario Party.
Highly Evolved
Tetris Attack vs. com race would be...interesting.

And having Tetris Attack vs. matches in the back would be disastrous because a lot of SDA people have played the game but are not good at it.

It was still good to see a Tetris Attack playthrough.

I look forward to not evoking the 'Halo rule' next year when I actually practice each of my games :-p

I know I'm gonna forget someone but:

Carcinogen: Cool cat and fellow MGS lover
Mike: Super Mad props for organizing everything and lending me his bed
Stanski: Cool cat and super nice guy
TriHex: Cool cat and one smart dude. Yoshi's island was amazing.
SirVG: Many thanks for the airport run
Nate: All the technical stuff as always

You all shattered your goal! Had a blast, and will come prepared with some mad halo skills next year. Promise!

Vanquish? Mirror's edge? Who knows…

Also one of my favorite memories at the marathon has just recently happened... animeowzerz took out dora the explorer for us to play for verification purposes, and within 30 minutes tjp found an incredibly tough method of movement that abuses the monkey that follows behind you and doubles her walking speed. Animeowzerz thought the game was going to be an easy accept, but really should not have let us mess around with the game and try and glitch into everything/find a faster way to do the game. It really was one of the most impressive things I've ever seen, and really makes me wish we all lived close together, could pick a game, and could just try and break a random game/find shortcuts in random games every day.

I really wish you all could have been here and seen this shit. TJP is the biggest fucking boss i've ever seen.
Die Hard 2013.
As evidenced by my lack of posts at SDA, I haven't been much involved with the community here in the past.  I am mostly a TASer, though I try to keep up with the runs posted here periodically.  I would like to put together a run for this in the future, though school will be keeping me quite busy for my final semester.  Going into the marathon I personally knew 3 people and had spoken to around 4 more, so I correctly figured that it would be a fun way to spend my break.  I'm sure next year will be even better.

Mike Uyama: I'm sure everyone truly appreciates the effort you put into making this happen.

neskamikaze: Nice to meet you for sure.  Maybe we can work on random no name games more in the future.  You're a skilled runner, and I could see that you hold yourself to really high standards.  After getting destroyed by you in puzzle league with consistent 13x chains, we know you're extremely skilled.  Your Tetris Attack run was short of your potential, but it wasn't bad.  Don't stress about it.

PJ: I want to see a sub 10 hour glitched 7th Saga run someday.  Maybe I will find the inspiration to code the algorithms I was discussing with you.  Unfortunately it may not happen until after I graduate in May.  I'm glad you taught me to appreciate Lagoon.  Great runs of Battletoads and Color a Dinosaur.  You're a hilarious guy.  Watching you constantly dying and congratulating the programmers was quite fun.

Nitrodon: Nice to meet you.  We need to document 7th Saga some day.  This probably won't happen for some months unfortunately.

Tri-hex: It's obvious you put a lot of effort into your run of Yoshi's Island.  I think it stood out amongst many of the other runs because you put in the extra effort to make it highly entertaining.

Kareshi: Your piano skills made the races highly entertaining and created a great atmosphere.

Ani:  You are superhuman.  I never could've fathomed anyone mashing a button so quickly.

aleckermit:  You cheat at Mario Party 3.  All of your coins and stars were stolen, and you must have gamesharked the last turn hidden block.

Runnerguy, Cosmo, Jiano, and aleckermit:  Thank you for allowing me to do the commentary for Ocarina of Time.  I was glad to be involved in such a great performance by all of you.  Jiano mashing while trading the Poacher's Saw for the Broken Sword was possibly the funniest moment of the week to me.  I hope the stream heard how ridiculously he was mashing.

Cosmo and Peaches:  It was fun traveling with you guys.  I'm sure I'll see you around.

People I talked to throughout the week:  Nice to meet you, you all know who you are.  (I don't want to accidentally leave anyone out.)

Anyone I didn't meet:  Sorry, I should be more sociable in the future.
SEGA Junkie
I was going to make a final donation where I gave my epic ending credits like last year but this topic seems to be a better place to do that! I doubt I will out-thank cyghfer though, he is a beast. He had better come next year just for that.

First, my shoutouts:

Mike Uyama: once again, the dictator comes to the fore, spending basically half the year planning this event, bringing together a location, 50 amazing gamers, and most importantly, a cause. Not to mention he ran a ridiculous amount of games this year, and picked one of them up with two weeks to go! We are eternally in your debt for the work you do for us all.

Cody Miller: I hadn't had anything to do with you before this so pretty much everything about you came as a surprise to me. You out of everyone were the one most willing to completely humiliate yourself for donations, which as we know, is what this whole thing is all about! I was also particularly proud of your ice-man mood in Halo - I guarantee you nobody else in the room would have finished that run, or would have at least thrown a controller on the way to doing so. And redemption is sweet, isn't it?

Flicky: I believe I called you "this year's Breakdown" at some point, which I completely stand by. Any commentary with you in it was an absolute treat, and I ended up watching the vast majority of Bayonetta despite not knowing the game at all! I definitely hope you can come out again next year.

Kareshi: I missed Pianotoads but I was around for Pianovania this time around, random boss interludes were the -best-. You add a skill to the marathon that I don't think anyone else there could, and doing things in a new and exciting way is always awesome.

Mike again / Vorpal: Thanks so much for persisting with me in the RKA race, despite my internet being a pile of shit! The sad part is that I had been watching continuously for like five hours prior to that with no problems at all. >:/ I did record it with FME, I just need to find out where that file saves.

Nate / Lag.Com: Your tech skills are very much appreciated! I was watching the stream on Wednesday when you were struggling to get everything set up, it was a seriously good effort to get the marathon set up on time this year!

MercuryZelda: Like Josh to cyghfer, Mercury was my "direct line" to the marathon site for most of the event - even while she was knitting furiously off screen! Tongue I missed both your runs, sorry Sad but your artistic side was featured prominently for most of the event, and it was amazing! I totally wanted that MMX hat, especially after Breakdown mentioned how comfortable it was, and how he wore it outside without realising it was on. XD

Aitamen: You would not have even known about this if I didn't tell you about it in October, but the amount of work you ended up doing for the perlers astonished even me. I just saw the Epoch today... mind blown. I hope that your artistic talents (as well as Mercury's of course) take you both a long way!

The other stream mods: How the hell do you do it guys? I was going out of my mind on the first night when Cody was struggling through Halo and the whole chat was basically like "wait, this is a speed run?" with many choice words thrown in. I maintain that my best move as a mod was to make Rakuen a mod, which basically resulted in him doing more banning than ShadowWraith and JaggerG combined - no mean feat!

Secondly, my highlights:

Pokemon Yellow - probably the best two hours of the entire marathon for me, I even knew most of what SMK was talking about but just listening to him explain it in great detail was awesome. With that in mind, I find it pretty amusing how little practice it looked like had gone into the run itself - evidenced by the fact that Venonat was unable to learn Teleport. (It seemed a bit odd to me that that would even work anyway...) I did have someone PM me in the stream chat a couple of days later though, who told me that your run made him want to play Yellow again... and he got to that point in the run and was able to teach Venonat Teleport. I wonder if there is some v1.0 / v1.1 difference here? I'm really curious about this.

Metroid 1 - MOST SERIOUS TIME EVER! Seriously dude, I've never seen anything like that reaction when you finished off Mother Brain, and it was so totally deserved. It'll be really amusing comparing this year's run to what last year's run is remembered for... I guess I could say that for a bunch of replayed games actually.

Yoshi's Island - As with last year, probably the most entertaining run of the whole event. Your showoffery knows no bounds. Props on 2-8 btw!

Rocket Knight Adventures (of course) - Thanks for letting me be a part of this thing! I felt kinda bad being the only one (after Tiki had to drop out of MMX) but when my internet connection held up, it was a blast. By the way, it says a fair bit about the game that I was able to fix my connection that many times without stopping playing the game. Tongue

Sonic 2 - Again, my internet connection prevented me from having too much of a part to play in this, but props to Stanski for being a good sport about my light hearted banter. And putting out a really good run to boot! Shame about Metropolis 3, I always just play it safe around that last bolt.

TMNT4 - Stanski's authoritative donation for Donatello. Fucking epic.

I didn't watch much at all compared to some of you (worked for four days of this thing) so I'm sure I'll have plenty of highlights to add later!

Finally, you are of course all THE MAN for taking the time to be a part of this. Even those of you who didn't do any runs! You make the atmosphere in the room, which is what makes the viewers want to donate more so than the runs themselves. I was kinda worried that after we discussed the shortcomings of last marathon that the commentary might be a bit more sterile this year, but it maintained that nice mix between talking about the game and tricks/glitches and talking about whatever we felt like (with maybe a slight bias towards the latter Wink ). Congratulations everyone!
Weegee Time
So I started thanking people… and I didn’t really know where to stop… and so I ended up making this post…

mike89: You gave me THE POWER!  Seriously, I had a lot of fun hanging around in the chat all weekend and moderating it.  I think I destroyed my sleep schedule just as much as those attending the marathon.  And it's all your fault. Tongue

ShadowWraith, JaggerG, and LLCoolDave: My brothers in arms in the chat room.  Those blacklist and ban propagation scripts made everything run a hell of a lot more smoothly.  Thanks for being awesome.

Moooh: I didn’t get to see any of your runs, but the time you spent in the chat rooms helping people and answering questions was greatly appreciated.  I hope you managed to get home safely.

mikwuyma: You managed to spearhead one hell of an event this year, and you deserve much thanks for doing so.  I finally managed to see you do a full X4 run as Zero, and it was awesome.  Keep doin' the Big Sexy.

MercuryZelda: You speedrun knitting and don’t afraid of anything.  I wish I had money to commission a plushie, because that Metroid was awesome.

Aitaman: I wanted that Epoch.  So badly.  You don’t even know.  Thank you so much for contributing so much of your time and energy on those prizes.

Lag.Com: You're not flying, you're falling with style!  I'd never watched a Morrowind run before, but I'm sure glad I caught that one.  Props for keeping the marathon running smoothly too.

Nate: Never watched a Metroid Prime run either, but it was really entertaining and informative to watch the marathon run.  Thanks to you for your tech skills as well.

UltraJMan: The puns, they never stop, and I loved it.  Keep on being The Man.  That clutch Metroid ending was awesome to watch as well.  I really hope you get a battle that perfect if you ever go for an improvement to the SDA run.

Trihex: Oh wow, you are one of my new favorite runners to watch.  I never knew Yoshi's Island could be such an entertaining run, but your showboating really delivered.  If I had even 1/10th of the skill you have at that game, I'd be happy.  I'm really hoping for another improvement to the SDA run in the future.

Cody Miller: Way to be a trooper.  You had so many problems in that Halo run, but you managed to keep pushing to the end.  I'm pretty sure most other people would have lost their composure, but you kept it pretty rock solid.  Props to you.

Andrewg: You did so many runs but still managed to keep a good amount of polish on them.  I don't even know how you can keep all those routes in your head.  You must be some kind of robot or somethng.  Well done.

Heidman: You are Contra.  Full stop.

PJ: You've got to have one of the most soothing and soft-spoken voices I've ever heard.  You really need to do some more commentary next year.  That was a really awesome run of Battletoads to watch too.

kareshi: I couldn't watch the races, but that didn't matter, because I was there for the piano.  Maybe next year, we might get some Piano Man?

SMK: My second favorite run of the event was your Pokemon Yellow.  Not only do you know your stuff, but you can explain it with such enthusiasm and humor.  Learn some games and get some commentary on this site!

Breakdown: Cause this is Thrillaaaaaaaaaa...  You danced your way through that run and all your others too.  You're an excellent commentator on top of that.  I'd be all, "Who's on commentary?  Breakdown?  YES!"

RaneofSOTN: Now that is how you anchor a marathon!  That final battle against Zeromus was such a great way to end on one of the continuous themes of this marathon: overwhelming clutch kills.

Essentia: I fell asleep at my computer waiting for the Chrono Trigger run, so I guess this is a preshoutout for when I finally get to watch the whole thing.

Denton: You, sir, need to play more video games.  I remember you were always pretty quiet when you were watching your wife’s runs, but you were so animated when you sat down for Lego Star Wars.  More co-op from you two!

PEACHES: You saved Chrono Trigger and you weren’t even at the marathon anymore!

MTI: Mike Haggar for life!  A valiant effort on the Battletoads race too, and way to keep fighting to the end.  And you know what, more props to you for winning your fight and turning around to help others with theirs.

Romscout: Surely there couldn’t be anything interesting behind that dog house.  Nothing at all.  Nope.  Not a thing.  Except a romscout with an entertaining glitch run, that is.

Poxnor: Where did you find such deep pockets, because I want some.  Easily the top donator of the marathon, you are awesome for putting up all that money for charity.

Retro Studios Guy: I can’t remember your name in the chat, but it was great of you to stop by and talk with the chat about Metroid Prime and your role as a developer.

Everyone: All of you should be proud of yourselves for not only putting on a damn good show, but also generating so much money for such a worthy cause.  I don’t think any single person could ever dream of raising 50k, but all of you together managed to do it.  This year’s event has just ended, but I think a lot of people are already looking forward to the next one, and it’s all thanks to your tireless effort and massive sacrifices to make it happen.  Whether you were played a game, helped in the chat, donated money, or just got the word out, you are all The Man, The Woman, The Mom, The Dad, The Whatever.

And thanks for giving me back my inspiration to really start working on a speedrun again.  I’m really hoping for some time to sit down and watch some RTAs, take notes, and work on my route.  Maybe there’ll be some V in my future yet…
Everything's better with Magitek
Quote from randomzero:
Question: What was Essentia's final time on CT, and was it enough to make poxnor donate the $1200? I fell asleep before the end of that run.

IIRC, my time at the final save was 5:49, and it normally takes about 8 minutes to defeat the final boss.  But my actual final times depends on whether you count my death and the problems caused by the power going out and such.  However, none of that really matters, because while I was at sitting at the airport yesterday, I got a text message said the following:
Quote:
Pox just threw in the 1256, and just hit 50k!
Everybody's favorite monster
I finally have a place to call home.
I thank you all for this.

Now a hit show on the CW
Slept for about 13 hours straight after work last night, so hopefully I'm coherent enough now to make this post. I had an absolute blast - participating in the marathon was some of the most fun I've had in my entire life, and I hope to be able to do so again for every marathon to come. I want to thank EVERYONE involved for making the event such an enjoyable experience. A few specific shoutouts:

Mike - No amount of appreciation is adequate for the work you put into organizing and overseeing this event. Truly, none of this would have been possible without your overwhelming dedication and patience.

Nate, Lag, Tigger, and everyone else who helped with setup and keeping things running smoothly on the technical side - Almost always off-camera, but ever-present, you guys are truly the unspoken heroes of the event.

Stanski - For giving me rides to and from the airport, as well as many food runs, and for just being an all-around cool dude. Major props.

SMK, TJP, and everyone else who helped with donation/bidding tracking - As someone who spent his fair share of time in "the chair," let me just say thanks for taking one for the team. Ok, more like taking several hundred.

Moooh, Mercury, and all of the other chat moderators, both at the marathon and elsewhere - Another unenviable job, but you all did fantastic work.

Nitrodon - For staying up on the first night to help with starbit collection in SMG2. I owe you, big time!

Denton - While the rest of us were making speed runs, you were constantly making food runs. Rest assured that your selflessness did not go unappreciated. Plus, your Lego Star Wars run was a delight!

AndrewG, Jiano, Heidman, and Trihex - Everyone who participated was awesome at the games they ran, but you guys are on another level altogether. It was an honor to watch you guys perform in person.

Kareshi - Your piano accompaniments were the highlights of the event for me, and you were a really cool guy to chat with. Missing your GnG runs (stupid sleep) was my biggest regret of the event.

Flicky, Stanski, Nitrodon, Matrix, Breakdown, Trihex, EmptyEye, Mercury, Essentia, Denton, Rane, Josh, JMan, TJP, SMK, and Cody - Everyone at the event was very cool, and I was happy to have the chance to meet you in person, but I just need to give a special shoutout to these individuals for going out of their way to make AGDQ six of the most memorable days of my life. I hope to see you all again next year. Sincere apologies to anyone I forgot.
I suppose I'll follow the cool kids' lead and chime in here too, but my thoughts basically echo that of everyone in the thread.  In fact, when I went last year, I had basically the same concern as you nes, what with the travelling halfway across the continent to meet-up with a bunch of strangers from the internet.

I think I owe at least 10 of your a steak dinner for putting up with my program when the initial rush hit and I realized that this thing was beyond what I had been planning for;  my hat is off to everyone who put up with that data-entry nightmare.  Also huge shout-out to the admins and tech-guys; I don't think it hit me until the event started, but once you start, you can't exactly stop to fix something halfway through!  Everyone else, you know who you are and why I am eternally indebted to you in some way or another.  Until we meet again, please stay awesome.

Quote from Arrow:
Slept for about 13 hours straight after work last night

I fell asleep an hour after the marathon and didn't wake up until 8:30 this morning so I know what ya mean here.

Shoutouts to Trekhaak and Carc for being in the Promote Cancer in Underage French Girls Foundation and dragging me down with you. Also shouts to Mike for being the first person to notice I was there. Denton for going on a food run the second I got there was the best thing that could've happened. You're certainly THE MAN and I'm really sad I missed your co-op Lego star wars run.

Everybody I talked to in the limited amount of time I was there just seemed to be so down to earth and easy to get along with. Trekhaak, PJ, Cody, Stanski, Breakdown, Carc, Rane, Mike, Essentia, Denton, and SMK were the only ones I remember saying more than a few words to, but it seemed like I knew you all forever and we were just getting together for a good time playing some games. Nobody was awkward about anything and the entire atmosphere was chill. Hopefully I'll be able to go for more than 24 hours next time.

The secret to being a power donation machine is to save small amounts of money for a long period of time. $20 a week doesn't seem like much but after a whole year, it's > $1000
Been lurking here for a long time only decided to make an account today.

While I didnt see much of the marathan I'll comment on what I did see and enjoy

That Katamari Damacy run was hilarious. While it didnt look like much of a game that would be good to speed run it definitely made up for it in humor. Especially at the credits when Arrow was rolling up the world

Super Mario 64 120 Stars run was done extremely well came so close to a deathless run too :p But nevertheless it still beats the current SDA record.

Links Awakening DX full run. I have a soft spot for this game really enjoyed seeing this game being done again however one thing that upsets me is since it was a full run it wouldve been nice to see the color dungeon being completed since the non dx version doesnt have this luxury.

Nice work to everyone that made this marathon possible.

Not a walrus
I'm still here at Mike's house and despite catching a lot of sleep over the last 24 hours I'm still exhausted. Not sure I'll be fully recovered by Monday, but we'll see.

Denton, TJP, VG, any anybody else I'm forgetting - For rides, food runs, and getting me that soda during FF4. Much appreciated.

Funkdoc and Emptyeye, et al - Providing some commentary during my Metal Storm and Blaster Master runs. I didn't realize until I watched the capture afterward how deathly serious I looked and it was difficult to really commentate on stuff I wanted to mention. I was super nervous about my runs in front of 2600(!) viewers and it helped me keep my focus.

Mike - For listening to my endless suggestions and requests before, during, and after the marathon. You must have the patience of a saint.

Nate and Lag - Keeping the tech side of things running so smoothly.

SMK - Writing that donation tracking app that helped keep a few shreds of our sanity intact.

Everyone - For proving that not all internet people are out to kill you. Seriously, I'm guessing that half the people in that room had never met (in person, at least) anybody else in that room before, but after the first day or so, you wouldn't necessarily know it from watching us. Not to mention raising almost five times our total from last year, which completely blew me away. I was expecting maybe double if we were lucky.

The Viewers - For being so generous. I know we had a few high rollers, but I'm willing to bet that if you cut out all donations over $50, we'd still have raised nearly $45k. No single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood, and I mean that in the best way possible. If not for you guys we'd just be a bunch of people in a basement playing games.

Cheers to all, and I can't wait to do it again next year.

I can't believe I forgot Emptyeye and Silver. My fellow CT sda members. Sad Sorry guys! You were both great and congrats on your wedding!
difficult and stupidly random
Was I just at some speedrun marathon for the last week?  It feels like I woke up from a lucid dream after drinking too much cough syrup and falling asleep in front of the TV.
I'm pretty sure you were, since we got to play some rockband :V

also I'm reserving this post for stuff I want to say, I'm just having a really hard time thinking of some good shoutouts. I'm still kinda stuck in the marathon mindset. I was really bummed that I couldn't stay longer for bonus streaming and just in general hanging out, everyone there was just so cool and easy to talk to, especially stanski. Thanks for the convo to and from the gas station yesterday morning, got me thinking about alot of things.

Like I said, I'll probably swamp this post later
Is PJ
Like ani, I have a giant list of stuff to write here.  Post reserved, since I'm heading out again in just a bit and likely won't be coherent when I return.

What I didn't like about the marathon this time around:
- Speedrun races lagged the stream to the point of being unwatchable
- advert about sore throat pills everytime I loaded the stream
- games being delayed so much an amount of time, I couldn't check them out
- I'd have liked to see more Kirby

I don't blame anyone as this was still a nice experience just like the previous marathon and I had some funny moments watching SMG2 and other games.

Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
I think the best thing, for me, about the marathon was the sense of community.  The group hug and the Big Sexy at the end brought me to tears, and I don't have enough words to tell everyone here how happy I am, even not being there, to be a part of such an amazing group of gamers.

Damnit, can't type while crying. (Yes, I'm bi-polar and thus my emotions are kinda powerful, regardless of what they are, I'm aware)

First off, Mike89:  He got me involved on a whim, he's the one who introduced me to the marathon after the end of last year's, and he's been my best friend through the worst of times in my life.  I certainly wouldn't be who or what I am today with him.  YOU ROCK, M89!

Site Admin/Tech Guys (Uyama, Breakdown, Nate, Lag, and others): Putting this together was no small feat, and though problems reared their ugly heads, you did amazing things to smooth them over.  Add to that commentary, and the fact I watched most of the runs in decent clarity, and you guys were regular super heroes in my book.

To all the runners: Some people did better than others, practice amounts were shown, but even for some of the most mistake-ridden runs, you guys had the balls to get up there and show your stuff, to give it your all.  Even the worst of the runs were good quality, and certainly superior to first-play, let's play, or most other streams out there.

Chatmods (Particularly SW, because he was on most of the time I was): Thanks for both keeping me out of trouble and keeping chat problem free.  You guys have this Lightning Ban Hammer thing in pretty good order. ^_^

I would comment (more) on individual runners, but I've watched so many amazing runs, I'm pretty sure my fingers would fall off before I run out of praise.

Personal comments:
UltraJMan:  Your little speech at the end of Metroid touched me, as it reflected much of what I've thought during the runs.
MercuryZelda: As the other artist at the site, I kinda liked the rival/friend thing there.  Metroid + S.O.P.H.I.A. was awesome.
Carc: Your rage will live on in infamy.  Your personality and ranting kept me watching through the RE runs, even though I don't particularly enjoy the games.
Stanski: To think I ever thought ill of you at all shames me.  You're an amazing guy, both from watching you game and from reading the stuff you've posted since.  If I've ever spoken ill of you, I wish to apologize.  You deserved none of it.

Also: What Trekhaak said.

I really hope I get to attend one of these eventually, and that I don't annoy everyone there with my antics~

EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't personally comment on other people, but I'm really bad with faces -> names.  Everyone involved did an amazing job, so don't feel put off if I spaced your name.
