lolo: Sorry, I probably read about the differences in a guide of yours or Garland's anyway. Still, you see what crap I have to deal with. Don't be too offended if you're a false positive on my idiot radar. Especially with those numbers after your name!
The next segment is taking longer than expected, because I was just away for more than a week and I'm not really in the mood for FFVII these days. That results in only a few attempts every 3rd or 4th day. But fear not, I'll get there eventually.
Kudos on the run so far Garland! I'm a big fan of your videos - not just the Speed Run, but the LLNMIENA and LLNIIENA challenges as well.
I started one on PS2, but it's more of a practice before I start a near-perfect run, so I'm not uploading. Already 3 minutes behind you at Airbuster. XD.
So good luck with both the near-perfect and TAS runs. I reckon you can finish under 8hrs.
Also I have a question that needs confirming, and I think you might be the one to do it. It seems as though in the PC version, you find very similar enemies after a set number of steps. In the PS version, there's seemingly a set number of steps before you get a battle, but its not always the same enemies. Is this true?
Fantastic segment, don't think it could be any quicker! I have a Q about the Shinra HQ Building..in your Near-Perfect TAS are you going to manipulate the elevator at the beginning to get zero encounters or at most, 1 encouter????
Also with savestates and luck manipulation, are we likely to see huge time savers on other encouters throughout the game as well as abuse of Cait Sith's limit breaks?? He might prove v. useful if relying on savestates!
To answer your question: Yes, this is true. When you save to a memory card, you don't save the RNG (random number generator), so you won't run into the same battles over and over after a save point. You're also right about the steps. You will always get the next battle after a certain amount of steps unless you save or use the walking trick to manipulate the random battle pattern. So, it would seem that the RNG is saved as well in the PC version. According to Farringa, you can fix this by getting yourself killed in a random battle, so that you return to the title screen. Then load the file again and you'll get different battles.
BarretsBoxers: there are no huge improvements possible with only save states. There are a few semi-huge ones that cut off a minute compared to my regular run, like the Shinra HQ elevator as you mentioned. The best outcome is one battle and three Shinra employees.
I won't be using Cait Sith's instant win attack. First of all because it's too cheap, and it also makes the run very boring and that's not what I need. Besides, it's not much faster than the "Tifa-san plan", if at all. It takes a while to kill the 40 enemies needed to learn the limit break too.
ShadowLaguna: Really? That battle could have been at least 10 seconds faster
Anyway, I'm currently planning the next two segment with BrutalAl and it shouldn't take too long before I complete the first one. The next one might take a little longer, but I promise you there won't be another 10 months break.
Hah I see you decided to accept my little challenge then.
In case you dont know, I offered Garland a race to see who could get their speedrun completed first. Good that I gave you the incentive to work on it. Good luck
