Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
sorry for the double topic (ff7 run by stephen wood ;D), but:
1: I registered Shocked Wink
2:I didn't think any one would go back and check the old topic for new posts.

Run went horrible.  I left Midgar with 3:03 :-[.  But, i had an idea. I could actually BEAT the game first, or I could just try again doing what i'm doing, which is playing each segment about 20 times until i get it down, and then recording it. Any thoughts on which method to use?
Thread title:
I'd play through it so you can get a mastery of all the advanced items/materia that appear later in the game. You could use that knowledge to make earlier segments of the game better. Also, you can use the time you spend playing through the game to brainstorm speed ideas that you can implement in the earlier sections.
Playing through will make you a better well rounded player.
Reserved Postulator
I would argue to complete the game first. You gain hindsight, which is invaluable for making time-saving decisions. This applies to any run - get a general idea of what you need, then go back and segmentize it (barring an SS run).

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Honestly I don't think this game can be done in under 15 hours, and if it can, who would download it?  Why not limit the speed run to getting out of Midgar?  My best is 2:29.  If people actually want to see a speed run of getting out of Midgar, i'd be happy to record one.  Or anyone else if they can do it faster.
trust the fungus
I'm pretty sure I could do better than 2:29, given practice obviously. I've been playing ff7 and I'll note two things:

1.) I'm not sure about this, but you shouldn't ever need to go to Kalm. you can run past the midgar zolom on foot, saving if you need to. this negates the time (and money) spent getting chocobo lure / chocobos. I'd still get choco-mog for sure, though.

2.) there is completely no reason to talk to Sephiroth in Nibelheim. he throws some materia at you, but it's something like destruct which I've never used. I've gone back on cd2 and he's still there waiting for me, actually. kind of funny.

that dude's speed guide claims 8:30 or so, which is probably more like 9 hours. I don't think sub-7 is possible, and I sure wouldn't wanna watch it, but I'd be curious to see how low someone could go.
Eternal Understudy
wrong and right, Transience. You need to go to Kalm. I've tried skipping it and it won't allow you to enter the cave to Junon. As for the Nibelhien part, yeah, you can skip the entire  shinra mansion as it's more of a sidequest.
trust the fungus
damn, I've been thinking about this answer for weeks and all I had to do was ask you all this time. what happens at the cave? is Cloud like 'uh, let's go to Kalm, idiot' or does it not actually let you enter it from the world map? I guess the big thing Seph wrecks isn't there..

sequence break stoppers in an rpg!
Eternal Understudy
Actually, the big Seph Wreck is there, and that scene's normal. But when you enter the cave, Barret or someone else in your party will come out and tell you to go to Kalm. It makes sense I guess, without going to Kalm, you can't get the Party Management thing and the rest of your party is there anyway.

Hello, just got back from Portugal (I ended up making 2 long trips there and was also following this run). Just so you know I have my TV card set up now. I will try attempting runs again but here are some tricks I used in my run you can use in yours, maybe you can do the run better than I did! I was getting more or less the same time as the GFAQ runner leaving Midgar on the PAL FFVII and not NTSC except saving 2mins or so. As far as I'm aware this is faster than the NTSC time? Not sure how PAL/NTSC 50/60 thing works.

But yeah here are the tricks to keep in mind for the whole of Midgar:
*Don't buy anything except the batteries. I never needed to.
*Don't equip restore materia (you lose a little time doing so), just pick up healing items on the way and use the 'Healing Wind' limit with Aeris. Your 2nd priority from necessary combat is to keep her alive to keep the others alive in your party.
*When entering the field map before entering Aeris' house hold northeast+run on your controller to save time. In her house run round the left of the big table to again save time and avoid getting stuck on anything.

And here are some tips exclusive to running Midgar:
*Turn up battle speed, message speed etc, battle message speed in config as soon as you can access menus. Do it as efficiently as possible, or reset!
*Use the general boss strategy for Scorpion Guard. When it raises its tail just don't do anything as you will need potions. With battle speed up it won't take long anyway.
*Use the two messages to get Aeris off your case in the slums (forgot which 2) and run down to the bit with 3 lots of soldiers. Don't fight any of the lots and get on the train.
*When Barret asks to learn how to use materia say "you wouldn't understand" you will save a lot of time :).
*In sector 4 once you get in the main room with the ladders go up the nearest one from the one you went down. This is to avoid random battles and most times you wont have one occur.
*Air Buster boss - kill it with physical and limit attacks only. When defeated choose "Be strong". When you land talk to Aeris 3 times.
*When running away from the soldiers with Aeris tell her to A) Run B) Hold on a second (use barrel) C) Run. Then escape.

I have more tips but I dont wanna flood this place. Just email if you have q's haha

actually there is one option that will make her go straight away, something along the lines of "this place is dangerous you better get out of here."

if FFVII can be done in under 15 hours (and i can't even see how 15 hours is possible) i would download it
more keys then pablo escobar
15 hours? i guess you havent went looking for time?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
If a run was under 15 hours I would download it, if it was over 15 hours. i would download it, so it would be very nice with a run. Even if it´s just out of Midgar Smiley

Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
I might actually just do a run out of midgar only, for starters, considering that this is a popular game and it looks like a lot of people would be happy with that.

Also, I'm using 56k modem and it would take forever to upload the segments (download speed for low quality: 1:00 min of video=30 min of download) so does nate also upload the videos?
trust the fungus
if you're sending nate a tape, you won't be doing any uploading. he'll be taking care of that, assuming it's something that's SDA-worthy. I'm still not sure if a Midgar run is accepted.

Midgar on the PAL version of the game definitely can't be run faster than say 1hr57m-2hr01m rounded

what makes PAL different?
Well on the PAL version movies still run at the same speed as they do on the NTSC version though the game is meant to be at 50hz in realtime...how this is an advantage to PAL gamers I do not know. If anything I woul have thought the time would be slower as a result.

Anywho it all comes down to 1/6 difference issues again and also subtracting time from the PAL version for FMVs if you go by what the guys say on GFAQs.
BOOM!!!!!
why subtract anything? it makes you sound jellous(sp?) or something.

FMVS also run at 50hz unless you can choose to play the game in 60hz, the reason being not all TV's support NTSC playback/60hz mode, mainly older ones (but we all know how long TV's last)
I agree with you but try telling that to those elitist GFAQ people who wrote the FFVII speedrun guide haha. As far as I am concerned, the final time on the ingame clock+plus how long it takes you after that to beat the last bosses should be the final time (minus the 2nd from last FMV).

Anyone have any tips for Kalm or maybe Cosmo Canyon?
I have a little tidbit concerning naming characters and it's effect on Cosmo Canyon. If you're speedrunning then you shouldn't encounter what I'm about to tell you guys, since on the name screen you probably won't change the default name. My brother named Red XIII "Nanaki" in Midgar. When he got to Cosmo Canyon, they wouldn't let him in. It was pretty annoying but interesting none the less.

normaly i would but GFAQS has become quite hostile now, say something they don't like and your running for your life (altho some Boards are still friendly)

so basicly once sep is gone (the battle that automaticly gives you omnislash reguardless of whether you have it or not) stop timer?

in kalm there is a Megelixer on top of the shelf, check it about ten times and cloud kicks it and the Megelixer fall off, don't know if the time is worth it or not. just thought i'd mension it cos not alot of people know how to get it.

They must have fixed that in the PC version,  because I run through as Nanaki all the time (I hate the default name.).

"Who's Nanaki?"

"Nanaki is Nanaki!"
BOOM!!!!!
i wounder if they fixed on the PAL release i'll have to have a look at that.
Yeah Leon once the final FMV commences stop timer from there I reckon. I want to do a 3 segment run with 4 save points; Zolom Marsh, End of Disc1, 2 and 3.

The Megalixir could come in handy btw! And looking at the GFAQ's guide the writer used grenades for Midgar Bosses. Might be worth looking into.
BOOM!!!!!
depends how much damage 'nades do might be faster to use Attack (or some magic).

do you think it would be worth getting Bahamut Zero?
