For your Thief idea, there would be a lot of time lost in rearranging party order, so I don't know if it'd be worth the slight advantage of running always in the first round instead of occasionally (25% ?) on the 2nd one. Note that a first-row thief will also improve your chances of First strike (and lessen those of Monsters strike first).

Yes, Black mages are hard to include in a serious team. Let's not insist on FFWB for now. (but it's not a lost cause)

White mages are really good, though. Either FRRW or FFRW will do fine in my experience. As for FRRW equipment, I go for Short sword with the fighter, Dragon and Coral for the red mages, iron all for the fighter, chain mail for the red mages, and silver bracelet for the white mage. Later, I grab the great axe in Titan's cave, which ends up a little better than Long anyway. I cut a little bit on the Heal potions. It's true that the budget is a little tighter, but nothing dramatical. The only problem is that 2nd-row red mage you were mentioning, whom Wizards like to drop. I've beaten Lich with a dead red mage, but it's a lot more dangerous.

At the risk of repeating myself, I want a team that is good at each individual step of the game, but not necessarily in a global way (since I'll be running away all the time). There are 5 tough bosses in the game:
- Wizards: need high absorb or LIT2
- Astos: need two black magic users, or Silver sword, or MUTE
- Lich: need two mages, or Silver swords
- Kraken2: need ability to cast LIFE after the battle
- Chaos: need fighters (preferably two) and FAST (preferably with two characters)

Additionally, there are four hard dungeons:
- Earth cave, floors B3 and B4: undead, cocatrices, wizards
- (Ordeals -- no team is good)
- (Ice cave -- no team is good)
- ToFR, floors 3F and Water: Gas Ds, Waters

One of the ideas with the three mages party is that Lich will usually fall to a full discharge of level-3 spells from two mages, making one of them expendable. I've noticed with other teams, including FFRR, that one of the mages would die from time to time and that Lich would become virtually impossible.

I may have gotten lucky when I tested FRRW, but I didn't get into trouble in the Earth cave. You know, it may not be absurd to buy LIT2 for one of those red mages, if Wizards in the Earth cave are such a problem. It's not like LIT2 can't kill undead too, including Lich. It's just 33% less efficient.

Also, you don't have to feel bad skipping Opal armor. Maybe take ProCape, I don't know. Kraken2 will be more of a problem, obviously, although red wizards have unlimited charges of RUSE. I've had no problem against Chaos. It's obvious that FFRR is a lot more powerful there, but it may even be somewhat of an overkill.

I would recommend relying on GrMedusae for getting petrified before Lich2, otherwise the solo fighter may get into trouble on the first three floors of the ToFR.

I'm not yet convinced of FRRW either. It will be either FFRR, FFRW, or FRRW. I must just say that FFRR does have notable weaknesses.

By the way, try starting at offset 116. Then walk 14 steps, reset, walk 15 steps, reset again, and really start the new game there. This will give you a nice set of early battles (GrImps, Ghoul, then Ogres), as well as a Wizard-free Earth cave and a manageable battle pattern in Ordeals/Ice cave. Additionally, if you use a white mage, offset-116 will give you access to a whole lot of Geists (battle group #4 in the south marshes area). On my NES, that offset is one of the most frequent, maybe even more frequent than 0, and the little walk-and-reset thing can be used to confirm it before starting to record.

If you're interested, I have a Nestopia saved state aligned at offset 116 with the step counter exactly synchronized to its normal starting position. That can be done by taking some fights into water and some fights on land, in such a way that the 116 battles fit into a factor of 2048 steps. In this case, I went with 90 land battles @ 10 battles per 256 steps, 18 sea battles @ 3 battles per 256 steps, and 8 dungeon battles @ 8 battles per 256 steps.
So, have any further luck figuring out this run?
Also, why is the Black Mage even considered at all?  That's what I want to know.
0-10
Well, if you want to use level 8 magic, there's that, but I kinda doubt that's into play. I'd have to say it's because the black mage gets MP charges faster than the red mage does.
Hahah, level-8 magic is out of the question. I do not consider level-7 magic either, and level-6 magic is on the edge (I'd rather not) with Black/White mages.

The interesting thing to know about FF1 is that you don't want to optimize the end part of the game, even when you're playing casual. What you want to optimize is the beginning of the game, where all the hard stuff is. Up to Lich, that is. That's why the Thief sucks so much for example.

About the Black mage, well, it's a difficult matter. He's very weak, but he has two major advantages, both related to his superior MP over the red mage. First, he gets level-3 spells at Level 5. Level 5 is right on the sweet spot of being accessible without (much) grinding before leaving for the Marsh Cave and Astos. Level 6 (red mages) on the other hand is right out of range. Lit-2 takes care of the Wizards very very well. So that is one thing. The other thing is that he gets level-5 spells at Level 12 (compared to 15 for RM). That means WARP. WARP is responsible for saving over 10 minutes of play in various parts of the game. It's so much worth it that if you only have red mages, it is a good idea to take extra time to go from 12 to 15 just for that. On a multi-segment run, I would definitely have a black mage in my team. On a single segment, it depends on the amount of retries that you are willing to expend. The black mage just dies and dies again. Getting to the Wizards alive is less probable than confronting just two of them. So, I hope that gives you a good idea of the conjecture.

My session is finished now, so I might spend some time running if all goes well. I've been inactive lately so I'll have to figure out a couple of things again before I'm ready though. I can't promise anything, but I'll see how my mood goes. I really think that there ought to be a proper FF1 run out there, be it single segment or even multi segment (go Warmech, go!). Thanks for caring. :-)
Yo Wonkle, I want to know, what would a FI/FI/FI/RM team look like?  I imagine the Red Mage would buy ALIT and AFIR to help them last against the Lich, but I'm not completely sure on what the rest of the game would look like after the Lich.
Not sure about ALIT. However, AFIR conflicts with FIR2 which is absolutely destructive against Lich. Don't buy AFIR. Look in your inbox for a more detailed explanation.
OK, my last preliminary test indicates
- 0:37:02 -> Astos is terminated, team is Level 6-6-6-5
- 1:25:18 -> Lich is terminated, team is Level 8-8-8-7
- 2:40:22 -> Class change, entire team is Level 16
- 3:20:42 -> All fiends are dead, team is still Level 16
- 3:54:06 -> Chaos is terminated, team is Level 18-18-16-16

I'm still going with FFRW. I've changed a lot of things in my route. The test was done on emulator in four segments, but it's really doable in single-segment on a NES. It's not more dangerous than my previous run at least. If anyone manifests an explicit interest, I will post the test run on YouTube and I will ask you for comments. The only thing that bothers me is that I need an assistant to do battle counting in real time, and I don't have one currently.
I would like to see your test run, and I would like to do the battle counting.
Hahah, thanks for the support!  Grin
I meant I need somebody physically seated beside me while I play, to consult the encounter tables and work the best course of action for the dangerous floors to come. And of course I need someone with sufficient knowledge of the game to be able to judge what is good and what isn't, but I have no doubt that you would be qualified. I don't suppose you live anywhere near Montreal, Canada, by any luck?

Hum, I have a hard time converting my current .avi files into small 10 minutes segments. I was using DVD Shrink, but I'm not working with a DVD recording anymore. Can you recommend me any particular program to do the conversion? Thanks.
Haters gonna hate
Google VirtualDub, it's just what you're looking for, and cheap as free.

I'd also be interested in seeing the test run.
Thanks a lot. That program is exactly what I wanted. Part 01/24 is uploaded already () and parts 02 to 04 should follow during the night. That leads us to a little after Astos.
Parts 02 through 06 are uploaded. However, I seem to have recorded them without the sound. I can regenerate the videos with the sound, and re-upload them, but it's more work and it brings no new information about my route. FionordeQuester, Breakdown, do you care about having the sound?

I will wait until I have a couple of views for those parts before I go uploading more.
Parts 07 through 16 are up. I recommend parts 14 and 15 (well, just the first minute of 15 to get the idea). This is basically the new plan for farming exp to Level 15-16. It may not seem meaningful since I'm just getting three levels there, but it represents 100K exp acquired in a little less than 10 minutes. That's about as good as it gets. Part 11 also contains a little surprise.

All done.

Look at the ToFR segment, parts 22 and 23. My strategy is way more solid than it was last October. Also this team beats Chaos pretty easily (part 24).
Don't worry too much about the sound.  I'm just gonna play music as I'm watching your videos.
Very cool.  One thing I noticed is that you often move characters between the 3rd and 4th slot a lot.  According to AstralEsper's Game Mechanics Guide (http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/522595-final-fantasy/faqs/57009), the 3rd and 4th slot are both 1/8 probability of being targeted.  Therefore it shouldn't matter who is 3rd and who is 4th.

Now, if you have a character dead or stoned, putting them in the second slot should proportionally make the 1st row targeted more, and so that may be worth doing.

Another thing - doesn't the Aegis shield protect against the Poison/Stone element?  Does Bane hit Poison/Stone?  In the comments, you mentioned you go for the Aegis shield to protect against Bane, but it doesn't sound right to me.  I could be wrong, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Also, toward the end you often have the RM using the Black Shirt, when he could be attacking.  Is the Black Shirt usually better damage?  Against Tiamat2 for example, it's only doing 20-30 damage.
Good point for 3rd and 4th slot. I didn't thought about that at all. I knew it at some point but it seems to have slipped out of my mind completely. I did think about putting dead characters in other positions than last, but I may have overlooked the 3-4 equivalence, definitely.

As far as I know, BANE is Poison/Stone element, and that's what Aegis protects. that's according to the FF Formulas thread, also from AstralEsper. Note that I'd be glad to be proven wrong, since that would mean I could skip the entire first floor of Mirage Tower. That would certainly look daring on an official run!

Using Black shirt instead of attacking. Well. Tiamat2 has a very high absorb (90, I believe), and the Red mage is using Defense or maybe Sun sword. The only hits that pierce are critical hits, for something around 45 damage, with 16.5% of hits being criticals. The expected damage from a physical hit is something around 23 damage, whereas it is around 30 with the Black shirt. Also, the Black shirt is less variable, which I like. Black shirt is also great against Chaos for the same reason, with a White mage for instance (or if you're short of FAST charges to boost your Red mage).

Thanks a lot for the 3rd slot vs 4th slot remark. I will be using that notion from now on, with great benefit.
Some further news for Wonkle and anyone else who would like to know, I've uploaded the last two parts to my FI/FI/RM/RM Playthrough!  They're adventures have now come to an end!
Ok, you are correct about Bane.  I forgot about the difference between Death status and Death element.  Bane causes Death status using Poison/Stone element.  Yeah, probably worth getting.

And thanks for explaining the Black Shirt usage as well.  Sounds reasonable.
This run looks pretty good. I think you could improve some of the shopping segments with a little more practice/planning, but as somebody who has attempted a long single segment run I can definitely sympathize.

I know gold can be tricky as you never have the same amount to work with, so perhaps prioritizing pieces of equipment and setting up a To Buy order could help you cut down some of the lost time in the shopping segments. With enough repitition you'll be able to do it all without any need for cheat sheets.

Other than that, I say start running this baby again and aim for less than 4 hours, as a think you can pull it off with enough luck and good execution.
Yes, I'm aware that shopping and equipment swapping still look bad. I will make my best to improve on that, but I can't guarantee a flawless run. I also think I can pull it off in a single-segment, but each NES try costs me a lot of time and concentration, let alone the fact that I need someone to volunteer for battle counting.

Don't lose patience, people. I'm a guy of action. Progress is being done. I know what this run takes and I know I've got it. It's just a matter of will and free time now.

Nevertheless, I do want your comments on the preliminary run. I put it there just for that.  8)
If you make sure you start at the same outset, won't you be able to predict the encounters just by looking at your test run?

He sort of can- the only problem being that he can't always predict when the battles will occur, which can screw up your count if you aren't paying close attention at all times. Counting out all these encounters is pretty tricky even when you take your time, so doing this in a timed environment is fairly impressive.

Some other observations:

I think you can cut back on some of the items you get in the Mirage and Sky Tower. If it were me I would skip the Opal Armor completely, and go with Dragon Armor, Aegis Shield, Ribbon, Adamant, and White Shirt. Invs2/Ruse will cover for your lower defense unless you get unlucky. I don't see you really needing the other spell casting items as your main source of damage will always be from your two fighters.

Kraken2 shouldn't be dangerous for your fighters if the one with lower defense goes for Ruse twice at the opening. Any really bad luck is probably going to end your run no matter what precautions you take (Kraken criticals your white mage, etc.)
