Yeah, I know about the differences between the routes, but I thought all the crap with having to stay at the inn, and the Honeybee Inn might take longer than 2 battles. I could be wrong though.
Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
oh my GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was at the final save with9 hrs 30 mins on my rugged run, and my sister saved over my game before I had a chance to even get a final time!!!! Anyways, now I can't beat big bro in squats! This sucks!
btw, what if you record a whole segment, saving and all (on a different file), but you decide you can do better and re-record that segment. Would nate automatically upload the better time, or should i put a footnote for him telling him about that? (I know, I'm a n00b)
you'd have to do the whole game again either from there or the beginning make sure you iron all bugs out BEFORE doing the next segment/sending the tapes

bought some tapes today (finally), gonna start recording soon. My dad's takin' down the internet for about a month, so I'm going to try to get to the library every week. Keep the topic bumped, please. I have about three days left to stay on, for this time any more tips would be useful.

Man that's an incredible time. If/when you get this up I have a feeling we FF7-fans might crash the archive.org servers...
damn dude it took you 9 and half hours to get to the final save thats damn good. how long did it take you to get out of midgar cause my fast time out of midgar was about an hour to an hour and half i never really tried to speed run but if i can get the game again il goin to try to get up around that time.
Just thought I'd let you know, Freek, that you're miscalculating :). It's been tried on NTSC U/C versions and PAL versions and the fastest times out are about 1hr58mins-2hr01mins. This is with extensive research and route planning.
I think everyone into FF RPG's on this board is waiting on this, TSA :). I have only a Midgar run recorded and it was a sloppy 2hr04min run. It resides on one of my many DVD-R's. Sorry. Where are you Woodenwolf!?!?!?!?! We need you back on the case for this run!
Okay, as some of you already know, I'm the guy who wrote the Speed Run FAQ over at GameFAQs. Me and some other guys did several runs last year, and I ended up with the best result of 8:39 at the bottom of the crater. My final time was 9:19:20 (9:16:05 before adding the PAL penalty).
The run itself was pretty much flawless; I didn't accept any kind of mistakes, so I always loaded up and started over from the last save point if I made even the smallest mistake that only costed me like 2 seconds. However, many of the strategies could have easily been improved, and we have come up with a lot of new ideas that will allow us to shave off more time. We have now come to the conclusion that the 9 hours mark can be beaten. If you read my guide, you will know that we consider the game beaten after dealing the last blow to the final Sephiroth, as the rest of the game only consists of FMVs, and there is nothing you can do to affect the time.
On February 16th, exactly six months from now, I will start my next Speed Run, and this time I will beat the game in less than 9 hours. And yes, I will record it.
I haven't read the whole topic yet, but I'll come back to that later. I'm kinda busy right now.
It won't matter on tape anyway. Since the ingame timer seems not trust worthy this will be likely timed by realtime.
Say Garland, I read your FAQ too, but I didn't understand half of that PAL/NTSC stuff. I read it as if it's not the usual 59.97 -> 50 slowdown but a speedup. Could you explain that again in detail?
Anyway, seeing forward to your recording. Be sure to read the recording guide before. If that video is not ultra high quality some people here might die from disappointment.
You probably know already that the PAL version is 1,2 times slower than the NTSC version. The problem is that FMVs are run at the same speed in both versions, and while the ingame clock is correct in the NTSC version, it will still run at 1,2 times slower in the PAL version. No need to say this is an advantage for PAL gamer, and you already have a 20 seconds advantage after the first FMV. Just test it out and see for yourself. If you have the NTSC version, the clock will say 2:23 if you open the menu at the first opportunity. In the PAL version, it says 2:03. The overall advatage throughout the whole games sums up to about 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Of course, this isn't fair to NTSC gamers. Let's say I beat the game in 8:57:00 using the NTSC version. Then some guys beats it in 8:55:00 using the PAL version. The only reason why he was able to beat my time was because of the FMV advantages, so his run wasn't better than mine. You get the picture?
but if FMVs on the PAL version ran at 60hz they'd be black and white if used with an RF unit and i know they're not because i still use my RF unit on one of my tvs that doesn't have a scart socket
I myself have only played the PC version of it, but my sister has got a PAL version of the game at her place. If the FMV plays at NTSC speed but the game plays at PAL speed it should look weird... I'll take a look next time.
One more question: Do you calculate the penalty exactly or do you use an average? There are numerous FMVs that can be triggered multiple times, like the elevator in that coast village (don't remember the name).

I tried to calculate the penalty, but I'm not sure if it's 100% correct. It's probably only a matter of give or take 5 seconds though, so it's not a big deal.
However, the elevator scene in Junon is not an FMV. It has ingame graphics, so it is slower in the PAL version. All the real FMVs can only be seen once.

what would the actual time be for the final video file thing though? 9:16:05? 9:19:20? or more?
If you recorded a PAL run, it would be 1,2 times longer than the time spent playing. If you beat the game in 10 hours and recorded it, the actual time for the video would be 12 hours, minus the FMV advantage of 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
But don't worry, I will use the NTSC version for this run.

Well as I said I played the PC version, and in that the FMVs were stored in avi format on the discs. But every scene with movement in the background was also stored as a vid there, so my assumption was that the game uses the same routine for animating backgrounds and displaying FMVs. In fact the game blends 3d graphics into animated stuff such a lot of times that it was hyped feature when the game came out. What is a true FMV then? Both the Intro movie and the weapon attack on Junon have 3d stuff in them... Launch of the mako cannon maybe?
